    The scary part comes when you get to the point where you’ve decluttered and realize why you made certain purchases. What voids are you trying to fill. What are you trying to signal to others. What you bought says things about you and your sense of worth or sense of worthlessness. Minimalism & essentialism is much more than having a tidy space, and there are roots and branches that will lead to other things. Excellent video

      Such a strong and insightful statement. I know your foundation will lead you to many fruitful endeavors as long as you continue to take those deep hard looks at yourself and your choices and learn from them. It takes real bravery not everyone has to face the fears you speak of.

    We need more people like you in this world, Ronald. I hope that many people will join the minimalist movement, which I so much love! Less stuff in our houses, more time and energy for what it really matters! 🤩👌

    You're right, minimalism isn't the goal. Purpose, peace, intention are the goals. Amen, brother.

    It’s kind of crazy how much of a difference a cluttered space can make on your mind. I try to create a sacred space everywhere. ✨🙏🏼

      I've geeked out on a lot of studies people have done to determine where the mind lies i.e. out there or in our heads. The claim is that it's two way traffic and cluttered space is the extension of a cluttered mind.

    “Declutter as you go” definitely helps keep the clutter in check! …in fact, what’s helped me is before I even buy something I question if I really need it or if it’ll need to be decluttered in time to come. Great self-realisations you had! 🙌

    I swear, every time you post a video it’s like you’re living inside my mind. All of these points really put me at ease as I continue to declutter. Thank you for talking about donating instead of selling by the way. There are so many things I’m still hanging onto trying to sell because I think I can make some money off of them. It’s really just creating unnecessary mental and physical clutter, and I feel like it’s doing more harm than good by these items just sitting there. Time to donate.
    Once again, thanks Ron. 🙌

  • @Lagaloggie
    @Lagaloggie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Two of the tips that really resonated with me are "Consider donating instead of selling" and "Give yourself some grace'. The first since at times, the apparent lack of takers can be an impediment to decluttering, and the second, because decluttering isn't a contest about who's fastest, who's decluttering the most. I'd like to think decluttering is about a philosophy, a personal lifestyle choice and what matters is doing something instead of being paralyzed into doing nothing.

    That you for this. It's been a struggle since I went through a divorce and he left and didn't even take his own clothes. I have some of my own methods so I have a "I know it can go" box and then a "maybe" box that's out of sight under the stairs for things that I am unsure and have the "well, I could use it" and I give it a month or so and if I haven't gone searching or thought about it and missed it so much then I know my maybe box was a go box and can just take it in. I really have enjoyed your videos and how this speaks to the intentions, values and looking forward to how you want to live your life and for me after a divorce I get to really create my own space now and have even repainted. I am very open to kids toys ideas however, because that decluttering is a major deal.

    I have a difficult time with donating vs selling. I'm in declutter mode right now, and I'm feeling extreme guilt over the money I've spent so frivolously on things that I ultimately didn't need. I tell myself if I can get a few bucks back in the process, it won't be a total loss. But in the end, what I'm finding is that selling individual items for $10-$30 ea just isn't worth the hassle.

    I did a no-spend year in 2020. It was pretty hard especially when quarantine happened and you can't help but feel I've got to buy something to keep myself occupied. I made it through the year and when 2021 started I was like yeehah I can spend money again. I was shocked to find that no-spend had become a habit and I really didn't need or want to go back to my old ways. Still working on decluttering my old crap though! LOL

    I agree with donating. I'd rather just get the items out of the house and have it accessible for someone else to use. I don't have time for garage sales and Covid has made that an impossible choice anyway.

  • @Margo714P
    @Margo714P 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    4:19 I am at this point with the garage, where I have thrown away all the obvious stuff that needs to go. (Why were we saving an old used thermostat and all those millions of screws, nuts, and bolts?) I'm stuck at the left handed golf clubs, the perfectly good croquet set, the bike that has been hanging for years now, the multitude of shovels and rakes, the kids' building blocks that they haven't used in long time, Tinker Toys, saws, sanders, and I could go on, but you get the point. How does one turn a maximalist garage into a minimalist one?

    • @RonaldLBanks
      @RonaldLBanks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Try not to think about it in terms of being a “minimalist garage” and instead just start with what you need. So ask yourself what items in my garage do I need and use regularly? What items are good to have? What items are taking up space? What items will I never use? Start there and as you being the let go and organize what’s left (the items you need for you’re living situation) then you might surprise yourself with how “minimalist” it ends up looking later

  • @shobok7186
    @shobok7186 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did the opposite on the last point actually. I decided to sell - as a way of taking more responsibility for the thimgs I buy. In my country too few people are buying from goodwill and we dont donate things to homeless shelters. I dont really make money on the things I sell either. Most of my stuff I put out for 5 dollars or for free, which is less than what shipping costs (8dollars). It helps me a lot when buying new things; will this item be interesting for someone in the future and I also see how long things are out for sale before someone picks it up (often 4-6 months even a year sometimes).

  • @ber1779
    @ber1779 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    While donating is faster than selling, I encourage people, if they have the headspace, to sell or find new homes for each item. This is because from an ecological standpoint, most things that are donated end up thrown into the landfill. However, if you find a new home for it such as selling an item, or passing it on for free, letting friends and family pick, etc. the life of the item is extended more than if it were to be donated in bulk to a thrift store.

    • @RonaldLBanks

      I tend to approach these areas daily. Helps prevent them from building up and getting out of control, especially email! In regards to social media and apps, I declutter as I use them. So if I notice that I’m following someone that I no longer receiving value from I unfollow… the same for apps on my phone, if I’m not using them either for personal or business I delete it.

    • @TheSupasweet
      @TheSupasweet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Being a junk collector myself, I can tell you that referring to his stuff as clutter is likely to put him in a defensive mode right off the bat. I would suggest that you talk about reorganization rather than “decluttering or minimizing” and that you offer to do it together as a couple rather than you doing his stuff or him yours. If he feels that he gets the final say on what stays or goes, the process will be less threatening.
      As I go through my own stuff, I realize that I’m not even attached to much of it, can’t even remember why I kept it, or I remember why, but the situation no longer exists, so I no longer have use for it and then it becomes easy to donate or trash the item as applicable. Once you start the process and see how freeing it is, the anxiety and overwhelmed feeling slips away. He may never get to the point of being minimalist but if the amount of stuff decreases by even 20 percent you will probably both feel better. Having some areas that are “yours” and as minimal as you want and “his” and as filled up as he wants, will give you both sanctuaries where you feel at ease and don’t have to resent each other for your different styles.

    Decluttering and Minimalism are two very different things. And one doesn't necessarily need to go with the other. There not a magic bullet. Get rid of obvious junk first, be methodical with the rest of your items. And work on the real issues affecting your life. Otherwise, all you'll be doing is sitting in an empty room with your depression and despondency.

    I have declutered my entire house but am having trouble with photo declutering. I start and then quit over and over again

      What do you believe the reason is for that? I’m assuming there is an emotional attachment there that is making it difficult for you! Have you uncovered why?

      @@RonaldLBanks I just feel like it's an overwhelming project with hundreds of photos that I stop before I hardly get started

    Your videos always have a weird strip of video errors on the bottom. Weird cause this is the only channel that does this.
    Are you AI? Just joking
