My 3 year old son had been diagnosed with an aggressive brain stem tumor, medulloblastoma, in 1993. He and his two-year old sister LOVED this song, jumping on the bed and yelling out the chorus "Wooohhh" as I played it over and over in late 1993 and early 1994. He passed in February, 1994 but I'll never forget this song as it made him imminently happy in his last days!!
This is just one of the songs I come back to when I keep running into hard times, just turn up the music and appreciate the hard times making room for more good 🙏🏻 If anyone out there is feeling the same way
They played a concert in Savannah, GA in the early 2000's. It was outdoors down by the river. A storm rolled in shortly after they took the stage and it started raining and lightning pretty bad. And this storm was no joke. Half the crowd left for cover because it was intense. Huge rain drops just pouring down. Lightning not too far away lighting up the sky. They all kind of gathered at the back of the stage for a minute, then came running back out. The singer said something about how they were making them call off the concert due to the weather, but they weren't going to leave until they played the song we all came to hear. Then they rocked this song out while getting soaked. Nobody would have blamed them for leaving when they were told to, but they hung in there for us and I'll always remember that.
My dad _loved_ this song. It makes me think of him...he died about 3 years ago. I still love this song, but it's so hard to sing it without crying."Heaven...let your light shine down." 😢 I miss you, Dad. 💔 He would've been 64 now. He died at 61.
I am 64 ..... I have no children ( ever ) You sound like a "good" kid ..... My Father was an EXTREMELY good looking Man .... He tried His best to teach Me Right from Wrong ...... Most important of all , HE LOVED ME .......
Steven Attanasso thank you. I try my best. And your dad sounds like he was a wonderful father. No matter how old we get, we always miss those who raised us and/or loved us.
@@SunBunz Sounds like he was a truly special man. It actually reminds me of the story of my maternal grandmother, a severe alcoholic who constantly neglected my mother and her two siblings. It's a very long story, and I don't know all the details, but I do know that her Christmas/birthday present (my aunt was actually born on Christmas day, believe it or not!) to them on, what I believe was my mom's 17th year of life, was to go to rehab. She hasn't have a drop of alcohol since that day and is now slowly approaching her last days from congestive heart failure. She probably has no more than a few years left, sadly. Still, she's had a long and fulfilling life of about 75 years, so I can't complain. I'm going to miss her so much.
I was a child thru 80's and teen in the 90's and listened to EVERYTHING due to an older brother into music and the 80's seemed so slow kinda going and 90's just a little faster but not in a rush...just the right speed and tempo for MANY GREAT SONGS !
As a teenager back then I remember coming home from goofing off and finding my Dad at his stereo with my Collective Soul tape in it looking for this song. He looked at me with a BIG smile and said, "Find that, YEAH, song you listen too for me ". It is a memory I will remember forever!! Thanks Collective Soul for that!! I MISS and LOVE YOU DAD!!! Every Day!!!
I'm actually listening to this in memory of my dad as well. He passed on 5/9/24. I remember at 5-7 year old (1992-1995) cruising in his Nova listening to this, ACDC, Wilson Phillips and Paula Abdul.
This is the kind of calming song your dad played in the car at medium-low volume while driving the family home on the highway late at night, front windows rolled down with a cool breeze coming in, you and your siblings asleep in the back.
For me it's coming back after getting a load of candy and arriving by the truck my dad used to drive at the trailer my grandma lives in to spend the night there.
My mom had this cd and gave it to me when I was 6 yrs old. She is the strongest woman in the world to me. Raised 5 kids on her own no family helped us. Prayers she is very sick and she means the world to me.
In my case, it’s quite the opposite. You should listen to Linkin Park if you’re a fan of HARD, ALETERNATIVE, and electronic rock. Or if you like AJR, you might like their last album, one more light. Well, last OFFICIAL song. The others are remixes and 20th anniversary additions which there’s 2 so far.
My sweet husband Benny played this song for me when we first met and every time we were in his vehicle. It was a favorite of ours, held a lot of meaning for us. He passed 4 months ago. We were together 27 yrs, married almost 24. I still listen to it. Love you Benny Bear.
Thank you for sharing the sweet memory of your husband and the special connection this song has. I lost my wife if 17 years too and it’s amazing the way music brings you back. God bless!
Jesus died and rose again to save you from Hell, but you must accept him as your savior first. These Bible verses explain how you can accept Jesus as your Savior and have eternal life (John 3:16, Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5: 8-9, 8:28, 10: 9-10, 10:13, Ephesians 2: 8-9, John 14: 6, John 1: 1, 1 John 5: 7, Hebrews 11, James 1:17, 1 Corinthians 15: 51-55, 1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18, Revelation 21: 4 -6) 🙂
An old friend died a few days ago. I hadn't seen him in a long time, but I have a clear memory of us riding in his Grand Am in the early morning, belting this song on the radio. Here's to you, Chris.
My dad died unexpectedly from a short battle with cancer, I didn't get to see him or say goodbye and it feels like my heart was torn in half. I've been listening to music and this song is so comforting. RIP to my dad I love you ❤️
Take solace in knowing that your father is in a better place watching over you and that he isn’t suffering anymore. May he rest in peace and God bless you both. 🤗🤝
That's very sad. Terribly sad. I don't think I'd really be able to take that. There's at least one good thing, which is, the comfort you've said you've received from this song. I hope you feel better at some point, I really do.
This content is culturally significant. Posting it on TH-cam will ensure that future generations will have access to it and appreciate it. Thank you for sharing it.
I’m glad that they’re preserving this epic band’s legacy. Today they don’t make music like they used to. The music of the past decades 90s, 2000s, have more profound songs. Music was artwork. The songs of past decades had lyrics that touched the deepest corners of your soul. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Collective Soul, Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park, Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilot. Music of the 90s and early 2000s need preserving. They are work of art.
@@rachelrivera91they have those today, these just sounded better. Ppl can only create so much new cool and refreshing music. Time for new instruments and/or sounds

We just saw them last night with our 26 year old son. One of my memories....my wife was a nurse (retired now) and it was a Saturday or Sunday so I'm home with our infant son while she's at work. I'm holding him dancing in our living room to their song "The World I Know". Got a little teary when they played it last night...misting a little now as I type this. Good memory.
My band played with Collective Soul back in 2012. It was just us and them on the bill, and they were absolutely cool to us, inviting us into the Green Room, and they watched us play during our set. The place was not huge, about 2500 people, but it was probably one of the best nights ever. It's nice when a headliner doesn't act like a headliner.
And, unike so many who have posted on this song, nobody seems to have died from seeing that show! (But absolutely great to hear they're nice guys. I'm just riffing on the dozens and dozens of posts here about 'favorite song relative' dying!!)
Me and my best friend Brandy. 10th grade and not a care in the world. Now, I'm 39 and she passed in 2001. Always gonna be a bond with this song and now she lets her light shine down. #fuckcancer
My dad and I would go cruising back roads in a small town in northern Kentucky, and drink some beer when this song came on we would JAM out. Dad passed away and I played it at his funeral. Love this song!!!
My granddaughter is just a couple months away from her 2nd Birthday. She and my soon to be 27 year old son are extremely ill running 104.5 fevers and my daughter in law is running herself ragged trying to take care of everything. I just copied and texted a link of this to her to be uplifting. Started reading the comments left and wanted to say there are obviously a ton of great people out there. Everything was so kind and loving....Im truly moved!!!❤❤❤
Nah, the alternative revolution brought alot of junk that degenerated into angry uncontrolled fires. This song brought light to an era that was getting increasingly dark.
I’m 70 but I can feel your comment. One grows older, times change. Music has a unique quality to bring one back to the good times before life gets complicated. You certainly had a bunch of great bands to listen to. ❤
I was lucky to have enjoyed the best music since the sixtys up to the ninetys. Unfortunetely afterwards music failed miserably with no depth, no good lyrics and no emotion. So sad for us older people. At least we had the opportunity to experience the best music and have the best musicians of all times.
This was the first music (CD) I ever bought for my son. Gave it to him as a gift when dropping him off at Summer band camp at LamarU in Beaumont, TX. He was 12. He followed my genre for a long time. Fast forward 20+ years and roles reversed. The last group he lit me up with was The National. He died at 37 in 2018.... still crushed.
Me too brother. My son played guitar in a band in Phoenix. Music was in his SOUL! He died in his sleep, age 37. Just went to sleep and didn't wake up. He Rocked This Song and Pink Floyd too. 2020 really sucked... PEACE ☮
Yes , i feel the same . This was also from the very first time i heard It , back in the 90 ' s , of course . I always remember this beautiful one and i still love It . So special , for me .
You ever realize that you are actually happy? Life has kicked, punched and bit you to keep you down, and yet you still find a way smile a genuine smile at the end of the day?
Can you bring my kids back? I know you can’t .. I just wish they were with me but that’s really selfish of me. I miss them when I’m here and they’re both in Heaven. Thought it would be other way around but
If I can’t go back to the 80’s , I will take the 90’s for sure. I remember dressing grunge all the time. Yes, girls wore flannels, construction boots, or doc martens , and a pair of jeans. I’m 51 . I feel as if time has sped up . Bittersweet
I also miss the 90’s. I haven’t worn flannel since then 😂😂. Doc Martens and construction boots left blisters on my feet but hey I wanted to look cool 😂😂.
In the 70's we hippie chicks wore sleeveless white T with bib overalls lace up brown work boots and the ever present flannel shirt. Nothing's new under the Sun except once. ✌️☯️🎶🎶🎶
I liked that the grunge girls wore flannel and bulky clothes, not flaunting their bods, made it all the more mysterious and approachable yet non sexual in a sexual way.
I went to this concert a few years ago. It was a spiritual moment for me! Love is in the air. Teach me! God teach us to love again. Be there! Who's. Heaven let your light shine down! I got the message. I'm always waiting for signs from heaven! Got it loud amd clear!
+Eli Gallet ok thats totally not fair to say. theres still a lot of awesome stuff around today. mumford and sons, of monsters and men, florence and the machine, among others are pretty solid albeit softer alt-rock groups. plus the good oldies are still around. blink 182, fall out boy. rhcp, and weezer are still alive and kicking.
I spent an hour of my life trying to google this song...I couldnt remember a single word so I was typing in the guitar riff with woaaah... When I found it, my life was complete
I named my youngest daughter after this song; Heaven. Every time i hear it i send it to her and think about her and how beautiful she turned out to be. "HEAVEN LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE DOWN."

I lost this song an for the life of me couldn't remember the name of the band (anemia does this to me) so when I found this I was so happy and seeing the lyrics made me have even more of a special connection to this song. I used to play this for my dad a lot and he loved it just as much as me. I miss him.
This is why music is important. No matter how many years have transpired, this song holds meaning to those who understand the lyrics and enjoy the song. 🥰❤

@@vicdipietro9758 IMO opinion Our 90s Alt is gonna stand the test of time like classic 60 n 70s and golden oldies. The 80s was the worst. Though as a young kid just getting into music GnR was my 1st Fav band. Still like iem now n then.
My dad would pick my up sometimes on weekends. We would go to his friends house put in the country and they would chill in the garage and drink. I was allowed to drive around unsupervised on the 4wheelers. I would come into the garage for pops and this song would be on. ❤️
I am 33 years old and I have known this song since I was 7. That is literally pretty much my whole life. As I started to hit towards my adolescence in the late 1990s I can remember buying this album at a place called music warehouse. I was in middle school and I had a portable cd player and a swing set in my backyard. Sometimes, I would listen to this song on repeat using both those things for HOURS on end. Fun times!
Ive been listening to Collective Soul since i was about 5 or 6 i liked their Home Album, still listen to them daily, im only 15 years old in case your wondering, great band
@@rsgirrl I remember the walkman! It was actually their son heavy off their dosage album that go me into them. I would hear it and blast it on my walkman while sneaking the radio onto the local rock station cause at the time I wasn't allowed to listen to it lol.
@@owenc585 I was only a few years younger than you are now when I started liking them. I knew their other stuff before I knew that I knew it because I have a sibling 4 years older than me and I liked the music on his radio station LOL. Siblings and parents help!
My grandpa was on a slow decline with his health. The last time he was ever able to drive us, we just drove around. Looking for deer. Watching the sun set and sky. This song came on the radio he loved it. He was so funny he’d say the “yeah” in such a funny way to get me to laugh. I didn’t know this would be my last ride with him or last time jamming out in the car. This song makes me miss him so much. He was driving 10-15 under the limit and it still wasn’t slow enough.. time moves too fast. This was last October and I miss him more every day. He was like another father to me. I’ve always liked this song but that’s how I fell in love with it and became a favorite.
Seen Collective Soul Live twice and they played Shine both times. Easily the best song of 1994 and hardly debatable the whole 90’s decade. Collective Soul was on fire in the 90’s
Just listen to what I had to in the 70's. Sprit in the Sky. It was cool at camp also way back them. Amen 🙏. I'm 60 now and I'm still a heavy Rocker lol. I pull up to Stop Lights and Stop Signs with loud music like God Smack, Tool and many others that I like and it's funny when the young ones look at me and do a double take like WTF lol. It makes me laugh. When Rock and Roll is in your soul. You have to play it loud and proud lol. No matter what age you are. Keep on Rockin y'all. We still live in the best Country ever. Love and care for one another. Also learn how to forgive. If you can't forgive how can God forgive you. Don't be hateful because it's better to get hugs and kisses insted of bruises and stitches. Your skin color doesn't define who or what you are. The content of you caretor does. Don't be afraid to have integrity. Be a free thinker. Live is to shot. All men die but only a few ever live.
I heard Slayer for the first time at church camp in 1987 as an example of "devil's music" to avoid. They took us to a mall to hang out a couple days later and I went straight to the record store and bought the Reign in Blood album on cassette and rocked it on my Walkman the rest of the time I was there. 👹
Fredtheguitarguy Ah, I see. Yeah, I guess it's hard not to think about Cho when listening to it. Still a good song though, I guess cause it's somewhat of an upbeat/relaxing song at times that it helped cheer Cho up? Maybe that's why he listened to it a lot, I mean? Not sure, that's just one theory though.
I'm an original rocker from the 60's and 70's and I can tell you that this tune ROCKS. My friends and I (ALL over 50) agree this is reminiscent of "our" rock and roll. Beautiful!
Thank you Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Nile Rodgers for writing this masterpiece💛 "Heaven let your light shine down" 💛🌞🌝🌼🌻🤘🏿🤟🏿 Thank you, Collective Soul 💛💛
It was 1995 and I had just arrived in the US, didn’t know a word of English but I loved their music even if I didn’t understand the words. A few years later, I learned the language and were able to understand the lyrics. Since then, Collective Soul is one of my all time favorite bands!. Great music!
My uncle passed about a month ago and when this song came out, he loved it! I would play it for him when I'd see him throughout the years and it was a flashback for the both of us. Anytime I hear this song I remember the times we'd be singing it on car trips
It was 1994, I had just come home from school and after throwing my backpack anywhere I turned on the TV which of course was tuned to MTV and the first thing that appeared was the video of Shine. The riff captured me immediately, I remember at that time I wasn't the best student, I wasn't a great athlete, I didn't have much money, I didn't have a girlfriend, but the instant the riff started I felt blissful. For the first time I experienced hearing a new song that would become a classic. As the song mesmerized me I knew I was discovering a great band. I had not been able to experience that sense of revelation with the songs of Nirvana, Alice in Chains and other great bands. Now I have a job, a wife, children, in short, a full life, and that moment when I met Collective Soul is still with me. I relive it every time I listen to "shine" and I go back to being that teenager who experienced the joy of discovering a timeless song.
Shine by Collective Soul is both a healing and well made 90s classic alternative rock song to listen to. This imaginative and soul nourishing song metaphorically made a mark on my memory again today when I unexpectedly heard this classic within a 90 minute span on two local radio stations.
Didn't we all. We took it for granted, thinking things will always be the same. That being said, I'll never trade the life I had in the 90s for anything in the world.
Nostalgia is a tricky thing. It usually has more to do with your youth than the actual decade or two that you pine for. Think about people in their 70s and 80s now. They were in their 40s and 50s in the 90s, but I guarantee they do not have as much nostalgia for the 90s as us people who were in our teens and 20s in the 90s. Their nostalgia is usually for the time and music of the 60s and 70s. Likewise, people 10 years younger than me love the music and times of the early 2000s... they pine for the nu metal years of limp bizkit, Hoobastank, and Godsmack.
I heard this on our hard-rock radio station today. Forgot how good it was! I had to play it again on TH-cam immediately. The 1990's was full of great alternative rock!
Can't even begin to call it post grunge when it was released in 93 and grunge was still thriving in 94/95. It's not grunge because it has nothing in common with it. It's early 90s alt rock.
@@TheHyde8875 I think the confusion here is seeing "post" as primarily a chronological term. What makes it "post-grunge" is not when it was made, but that it's essentially a response to grunge. In particular, post-grunge appears to be more optimistic, critical of ones self & also harder rock.
I was a teenager when this song came out. Good times the 90s. It was the last decade when I felt carefree, as if no matter what I did the future was going to be great.
I was 7 or 8 when this came out and I this is one of the few rock songs i was able to listen to with my parents because they though it was a church song lol. They didnt like the guitar solo part but they liked everything else in the song 🤣🤣🤣 But this song has and forever will have a spiritual connection to me. This song is a great memory from my childhood in the 90s.
This is one of the most beautiful songs. My brother fell in love with it in 94 and he passed away in 1995.. I played the song at his funeral and it means so much to me. It’s just beautiful. You have a lot of Italians in my neighborhood and at their funerals they always play Frank Sinatra. I did it my way. Well, my brother was way ahead of his time I played. I did it my way by the sex pistols in the church. he was kind of a rebel so it’s very fitting. Damn, I miss you, kid. See you when I get there.❤
My 3 year old son had been diagnosed with an aggressive brain stem tumor, medulloblastoma, in 1993. He and his two-year old sister LOVED this song, jumping on the bed and yelling out the chorus "Wooohhh" as I played it over and over in late 1993 and early 1994.

This the song of my time, I guess I am old, very old now. But I do not consider myself old though.
......ON WEED
For me it's coming back after getting a load of candy and arriving by the truck my dad used to drive at the trailer my grandma lives in to spend the night there.
My mom had this cd and gave it to me when I was 6 yrs old. She is the strongest woman in the world to me. Raised 5 kids on her own no family helped us. Prayers she is very sick and she means the world to me.
Just saw this.
Lifting her and you up in prayer
Got it.
In for you, too.
I pray God bless your mother and your family.
PRAYERS!
all the best wishes for your mother! god bless you and your family
I just turned 60 and I'm still shining !!!!!
Happy late birthday
Songs like this make me forget what a mess the world is these days. Stay blessed everyone. 😎

Look up bc Heaven's Light is always there.
Unless it is cloudy outside. Or night.

Those are the days
And, unike so many who have posted on this song, nobody seems to have died from seeing that show!

@@michaelbirke6050 I couldn't agree more. Music really speaks to the soul through every phase of life, which is incredible
I was lucky to have enjoyed the best music since the sixtys up to the ninetys. Unfortunetely afterwards music failed miserably with no depth, no good lyrics and no emotion. So sad for us older people. At least we had the opportunity to experience the best music and have the best musicians of all times.
Not the best, but at least a portion of it wasn't total trash till the transition to the the 2000s.

Fredtheguitarguy I'm aware of this too, but why would that interfere with listening to a great song?
Fredtheguitarguy Ah, I see. Yeah, I guess it's hard not to think about Cho when listening to it. Still a good song though, I guess cause it's somewhat of an upbeat/relaxing song at times that it helped cheer Cho up? Maybe that's why he listened to it a lot, I mean? Not sure, that's just one theory though.

Well yes, association can be a pain at times but you don't have to connect with everyone just because they breath too.
hahahah are you serious, these lyrics are the corniest of cheesedick garbage
Good point, but many people, non-English speaking for example, only listen to the beat.
Why was the 90's the greatest decade for music. The sheer quality, depth and variety is just astonishing
Guess you weren't around in the 60s 70s or 80s
@@darrincassidy9045 I was born 67 years ago and there was some good music over the decades!!
My dad wasnt perfect, but he sure did show me the beauty of loving and appreciating music. ❤
I'm an original rocker from the 60's and 70's and I can tell you that this tune ROCKS. My friends and I (ALL over 50) agree this is reminiscent of "our" rock and roll. Beautiful!
Thank you Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Nile Rodgers for writing this masterpiece💛
"Heaven let your light shine down" 💛🌞🌝🌼🌻🤘🏿🤟🏿 Thank you, Collective Soul 💛💛
How did I not know this??????? 😲♥
@@skorpiogrlthat is what I said!!!¡
It was 1995 and I had just arrived in the US, didn’t know a word of English but I loved their music even if I didn’t understand the words. A few years later, I learned the language and were able to understand the lyrics. Since then, Collective Soul is one of my all time favorite bands!. Great music!
That's badass brother keep rocking
Still a classic from a fantastic band after all these Years.
@courtney hello, how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here.
I really enjoy music by Collective Soul, I'm soon to be 74 and listen 🎶 whenever I can. Great music all around.
Helped me through my Mother's passing.
I have 45 years old..and i have to admit the 90's was the real best of my life.
Agreed
+gustavo pereira yup, I loved Mtv so much back then, the animation shows were awesome
Me to brother. That I only think that I like in 2019 is bourbon cheers.
This is definitely a classic song that will be listened to for generations. To put it simply, it's an legendary song.
Yahhh....
yep legendary
Do it, Jesus....Be glorified, O our God!....
@beverly hello, how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here.
My uncle passed about a month ago and when this song came out, he loved it! I would play it for him when I'd see him throughout the years and it was a flashback for the both of us. Anytime I hear this song I remember the times we'd be singing it on car trips
That is a nice memory to have TajinPapi!
Hang in there bro!!
I’m 74 years young Love this music 🎶 👻🤙❤❤❤

Shine by Collective Soul is both a healing and well made 90s classic alternative rock song to listen to. This imaginative and soul nourishing song metaphorically made a mark on my memory again today when I unexpectedly heard this classic within a 90 minute span on two local radio stations.
Damn I took the 90s for granted living through them.
I understand. It's amazing what perspective does, isn't it?!
Didn't we all. We took it for granted, thinking things will always be the same. That being said, I'll never trade the life I had in the 90s for anything in the world.
Yes!! The'90s went by. In a swift!!!
This song was EVERYWHERE in the mid 90's. Part of the soundtrack to middle school for me.
I heard this on our hard-rock radio station today. Forgot how good it was! I had to play it again on TH-cam immediately. The 1990's was full of great alternative rock!
When music was good and life was sweet...
indeed

90s grunge never gets old!
Collective Soul is actually considered post-grunge.
1993 is still pretty grunge, sounds grunge either way
Grunge is timeless 🤙
Can't even begin to call it post grunge when it was released in 93 and grunge was still thriving in 94/95. It's not grunge because it has nothing in common with it. It's early 90s alt rock.
@@TheHyde8875 I think the confusion here is seeing "post" as primarily a chronological term. What makes it "post-grunge" is not when it was made, but that it's essentially a response to grunge. In particular, post-grunge appears to be more optimistic, critical of ones self & also harder rock.
Anyone Still Playing This Masterpiece In 2024?.
Absolutely 💯
Word of Life Church Saint Joseph live is preaching on this song now
Absolutely 💯 me 🙋🏼♀️
Well there’s me 😉 saw them the other night and they are still freaking awesome!

One of a kind. A masterpiece. Never get bored to hear and sing this song ❤️
I was a teenager when this song came out. Good times the 90s. It was the last decade when I felt carefree, as if no matter what I did the future was going to be great.
Me too man!
I was 7 or 8 when this came out and I this is one of the few rock songs i was able to listen to with my parents because they though it was a church song lol. They didnt like the guitar solo part but they liked everything else in the song 🤣🤣🤣
But this song has and forever will have a spiritual connection to me. This song is a great memory from my childhood in the 90s.
Totally resonate with this comment. I wonder if it was the last decade where a teenager could even feel like that in general.
My dad passed 2 weeks ago and I've been listening to some of his favorite songs and this one is definitely on the list...
good times
I’m sorry about what happened with your dad. You are doing such a good deed. I hope you are doing okay.
See you when I get there.❤
❤ I just posted a short with this song. 🎶
