    Next time try and get the whole pan including the handle fully submerged so that you don’t miss the handle. Looks like it could use another light pass of the electrolysis this time with the handle fully submerged as well. Just use some wire to lower the pan deeper into the water and fully submerge it.
    Keep on crushing it! You are making some amazing video’s, and you continue to improve, which is just a delight to see.

      Nope. You just need to get the rust off. You can heat it up. You can scrub it with kosher salt and leather. Whatever you want to do. You're also not forming a patina on that skillet and it will wear away quickly. You need to use grapeseed for a few coatings while heating it in the oven. Then use flax seed oil for a few coatings. Then you need to boil oil in it. Wipe it down real good and it will have a new patina on it.

    The Cosy way: Rub it in oil and coarse salt, bake it in the oven on a high temperature for ages (roast some tatties of a Sunday lunch with the pan sleeping away underneath).
    You should be left with a shiny residue from any oil that didn't quite polymerise. You may choose to wash off, using soap is fine, as soap will only get rid of fats and oils, not the good stuff. Just never soak it in water or soapy water, wash the pan, then dry it with a cloth or by placing in the hob and evaporating the excess water.
    The seasoning is however vulnerable to abrasion, so wooden spoons and allied scoopy tools are friends.
    Repeat the oily bakey step as many times as you like, if the sheen starts to look dull, that's a good time.
    Campfire Jim method: Slap the pan in your campfire until it's screaming, then from a safe distance place some oil in the pan, it should hiss and will smoke a little. Remove the pan and allow it to cool to a sensible temperature for cooking, then go wild with onions, garlic, and I personally love some walnuts and hazelnuts in there.
    If you do cock-up and burn some stuff on that won't come off with normal scrubbing, don't be tempted to admit defeat and go in with wire wool. Round Chainmail (more properly mail) so not flat riveted mail, works as a good scrubber without shagging the coating.

      Titanium is a noble metal and galvanicly positive. I have seen it work before though, but I would suggest material that has much more negative potential such as zinc or magnesium as it have more electrons to release for the process. Large zinc bolts are pretty easy to find at most hardware stores too (plus way cheaper than titanium!!)

    you've probably looked it up by now, but if you haven't an easy way to season cast iron is to cover it in a thin coat of oil and then cook it inside your oven at the highest heat for an hour. Coat it with oil using a paper towel, then dry it of with a clean piece before each heat cycle, to make the seasoning as even as possible, turning it over so the inside faces donw can also help keep things as even as possible. Repeat that at least 3 times, and you will have a great coat on it. Just make absolutely sure there is no rust on it, even the lightest bit if surface rust can keep the process from working.

    Buddy, I have a rusted beyond belief, cast iron smoke infuser from an old Stok brand grill they don't make anymore....
    I've refinished a few 90 year old cast iron pans, and use them daily.
    I am inspired to try this witchcraft and bring back my smoke infuser!
    Great video!

    Fun fact: When he drops the droplets of water over the hot skillet, when they splashed and rolled over the surface, that is known as the leidenfrost effect. It's when the pan becomes so hot that when a liquid touches it, a layer of vapor is formed between the hot surface and the liquid allowing it to skim the surface of the pan as you move it around.

    As an electrician I'd like to point out that we literally never call it positive and negative. We refer to it as "hot" for black/red conductors carrying current and "neutral" for white/blue conductors for the return current. For batteries like this, there's no ground, so you're just essentially making a continuous loop.

    There are many ways to season cast iron, but the way it's usually done in restaurants is to pick the most highly refined oil with the highest smoke point you can find that still has a smoke point below your ovens max temperature. Peanut oil is a good choice, and what restaurants often use. Apply the absolute thinnest layer of oil you possibly can over the entire pan, place it in your oven, then set your oven to its maximum temperature. Leave it for four to six hours, shut the oven off, and let the pan cool for a few hours. Perfectly seasoned.

    • @skipdreadman8765
      @skipdreadman8765 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty good. Do it two or three times and you're really on your way. But two hours each time will do. Heat your pan to 200 ° F and then wipe your oil into your pan with paper towels. This opens up the "pores" in the iron. It should not be wet-wet, just a thin layer. 400° F will do for curing it.
      Oh... and turn the pan upside down so you don't get gummy pools inside the pan. Some aluminum foil underneath will keep your mom happy about the condition of her oven.
      If you screw it up, put it in a self-cleaning oven and do a cleaning cycle. The finish will turn to ash and you can start over.

    to season a cast iron pan:
    heat oven to 400-450
    use papertowel or small hand towle to wipe on canola oil to the entire pan(handel too). a light coating will do. too much and it can get sticky.
    place in oven for 1hr.
    turn off oven, let pan cool in oven.
    done.

    To season the pan, it is best to use tallow. Put it in the oven at 375-400 degrees, depending on how high of a heat you cook, for about 20 minutes. Turn off the oven, wipe the whole pan down & put the pan upside down back into the oven till it cools down. You may have to do this a few times to get the deep seasoning.

    So the metal tool looks like a probe, its meant for testing the soil moisture content and density. If theres too much moisture in the ground to build or the soil is too soft, it sinks in when you put weight on it. If its dense and dry enough it stays on the surface.

    Best way to season cast iron is coat it liberally with oil, and vegtable oil or lard will do, the turn it upside down in the ovenet set the oven to about 250 Fahrenheit or ablut 120 Celsius and lesve it there for 3-4 hours. One time usually does the trick, but you can do it repeatedly if you want to make sure. Just make sure the pan never touches soap after that or youll have to start all over again.

    • @BornIn1500
      @BornIn1500 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow that whole comment is just wrong. Do not coat it liberally with oil. Your seasoning layer will bead up and be spotty. Use a very thin coat. And you can 100% use soap on a cast iron pan. Only the very old soaps used lye, which was bad for cast iron seasoning. Modern dish soaps are perfectly fine and do not hurt the seasoning at all.

    For anyone learning to season cast iron, the only three steps you need: 1. heat 2. oil 3. wipe. Do that enough times and you'll have a completely nonstick coat.

    I see you splashed water on the pan to ensure it was hot enough to evaporate the water. It may be something small, but as someone who has recently began working with cast iron skillets, that’s how I do it too. And seeing you do it has just confirmed I’m at least doing it kinda right!

    I always got confused in chem about anodes and cathodes and the charges. Then I came up with an acronym to remember it: OAT (the "t" is a plus sign, so it's more like oa+, but you get it).
    Oxidation
    Anode
    + (positive charge).
    That definitely helped me pass a number of tests.

    If is real rusty, I find putting it in a bag of vinegar overnight works great. Messy , clean with water & brush after soaking ..
    Put it in your oven when you do the self clean option . This works as well as throwing in the wood stove for a burn. Other then that heat it up good wash with water, (never soap) then season as you would.

    Heating it too hot will result it in maybe warping. Also too too hot changes the metal so that it will never be able to take on a coating of seasoning. There are many videos of people showing the effects of putting cast iron in camp fires and ruining them. Bar keepers friend to get all the rust off then wipe with crisco. Put in oven upside down on 300. Wipe off excess every 15 minutes. Let cool. Put in oven 350 one hour. Put in oven 400 one hour. Done.

    Step 1 Set in white vinegar for 24 hours,. Next day scrub with steel wool and dry . Step 3 line rack in oven with aluminum foil . Set in and set oven to oven clean and let the cycle do its thing . Remove let cool naturally . Next line with a season oil of your choice , veg oil , coconut, olive ect.. take out wipe clean then re apply oil Set at 200 for 1 hour then take it out again let it cool each step natural . While clean and you should be good after that .

    chef for a living here! the best way to season a cast iron is to get a neutral flavored oil and coat it liberally then wipe off excess and throw into an oven at 240-300 for 4 hours to harden to oil and repeat 2-3 times making sure that all the micro holes and pores of the iron are filled in to create your flat nonstick surface!
    finally to maintain it never boil water on it cause it will strip the oil, dont scrub with soap only hot water and a scrub brush, dry after washing and store in dry area it will last you a life time!!!!!!!!!

    I as a chemistry major. Ya done good. Now you need to season it with vegetable oil. Put it in an oven at 250 deg F for about 6 hours. After you have used the pan don’t wash it just use a paper towel to wipe it clean. It’ll need seasoning every so often.

    The best way to season is only use oil on (never water) and clean with a dry rag every time, as time goes on it will become seasoned so nothing will ever stick to it!

  • @VincentMcmanus.
    @VincentMcmanus. ปีที่แล้ว

    to season it, heat it up a bit on the stove, then wipe a very thin layer of oil (flaxseed works well, as do vegetable, canola, and peanut), then stick it in the oven at the highest temp your oven can handle for 1 hour. At the end of the hour, turn the oven off, and and leave the pan in there, allowing it to cool as slowly as possible. Repeat this several times for best effect.
