Do you know if you can midi slave the sp on your keystep while recording in pattern mode on the sp? It would be great to program in a step sequencer and capture the midi notes by recording it in a pattern.
That’s a great question. I need to check that out! Couldn’t make up my mind if I wanted to sample a bass note and play it chromatically, or try to resample ext.
@@davemachine On the old one's, you can capture midi notes with the pattern record function. The only problem is if you want to record a sequence from an external sequencer. In this case, you need to start the record on the sp and manualy sync the start of your external sequencer. This is inconvenient because both sequencers are not perfectly align. It often miss the fist note or insert a silence at the beginning of the sequence. Syncing them would alow you to "import" sequences done on a more capable sequencer.
Sweet! Who knows, by the time everyone starts getting their preorder.. hopefully there will a new firmware addressing some of the issues like chromatic, and multiple pitching =)
So basically if I have an mpc live (better sampling, sequencing, pitching) and sp 404A (effects) there is no need to get a sp404 mkII. However, I might snatch it next year since the price is only 500 dllrs.
The truth is.. if you're happy with your current setup and don't use the SP for beatmaking.. it's not necessary to grab it. I have the 404A, but now I will run this alongside my Maschine Plus, MPC2500 or whatever I'm currently using. MK2 is much easier to use, faster workflow.. but it's still a SP

Great vid’ and beat as usual !! Does your keystep trigger samples from your sp ? Sort of mpc-keygroup making use of the new chromatic function on the 404 ? That would be awesome, allowing to sample 1 note and get a whole synth in live context. Not sure I made myself clear 😅, hope so 🙏
Thanks man! 👊🏻 I hear you loud and clear. I recorded the bass using ext in this video, but I need to see if that works.. sampling one note and use the keyboard.
Great beat and discussion. I saw you were controlling it from the keystep. Can you control effect parameters from the keystep as well? (e.g. send cc to control filter cutoff)
Can you pitch multiple samples at once in Koala? One way to speed up the process is to hook it up to the computer and use the software and change the pitch that way.. if you have your computer close by.

That’s possible if you’re using the resampling method, or just capture your jam with the skip back sampling feature, only 25sec tho.. but the resampling works, and you can chose if you want it mixed or as a separate recording that you can add later into the pattern seq. That’s what I did with the bass..
Sorry if you answered this on the other questions, just didn't find it. Are you playing a sample chromatically on the Keystep? I know theres the Chromatic shift function but I'm super curious if it can be controlled via a midi keyboard through the new Midi Out. Thanks man, love the video. Cheers
No such thing as a dumb question, no questions no answers 😉👊🏻. Yes, you can create a full song in the SP! They’ve added pattern chaining, but you can also use the resampling method to have each pad as a part of your track and track out these live inside your DAW.
I have a couple questions! 1:) Does it have any kind of global limiter, or FX limiter setting? I'm pretty sure that the old 404sx had an 'effects limiter' you could turn on to tame any unexpected peaks or super loud resonance that might accidentally blow peoples eardrums when using crazy FX haha 2:) In DJ Mode, can you label your tracks/pads with a song name? So you can more quickly load up the song you are looking to transition into, instead of having to just pull up unnamed pads and having to remember which is which all the time? cheers!
1. I can't find anything anything about a limiter.. not globally, or FX.. might have missed something. Imma look into it. 2. You can't label the tracks, if you import your tracks as "beat 1-2-3-4" etc.. that's the name they'll have in Dj Mode.. and let's say you use the skipback function and use that in Dj Mode, I think its called "new sample" and I don't think you can rename it.
@@BoombapArt Thanks for the reply! So you CAN name your tracks at the time you import them. So I guess then, when you import your tracks you should take care in naming them properly so DJ mode becomes easier. Cheers
@@schmapps1 Exactly! That’s a good practice.. and you can see the info of a pad my holding the remain button, and you’ll see the name, unfortunately not in DJ mode.. but you’ll see the name once you selecting a pad in the menu.
Should I get this or the Akai Force which just got a MIDI cc control update and other stuff for sampling. I don't have enough money yet, I am trying to find a cheap workstation, maybe a KP3+ Kaoss Pad? Right now I am using an iPad with Koala and an Akai MPD218 for sampling and drums.
Oh, that’s a tricky one. Never tried the force, but that one seems more like a complete workstation. There’s so many good options available like MPC Live, One, Maschine Plus.. and for the price of the Force you could get the MPC One + SP404 MK2.
If you sample something and chop it up or resample it, can you drag those samples off the machine in the software so that you can use them in future projects? I’ve seen drag and drop onto the unit in videos, but never drag and drop off the unit.
Here is my big question - Is there any reason to use this with the maschine mk3/plus? Seems like the updates make this almost like its own stand alone beat production unit.
Absolutely, whether it’s an older model or the MK2, anything paired with an SP is a win 👌🏻. Sure, the new one is much easier to use, but the sequencer isn’t close to like the MK3/Plus, MPC or MC101/707. The SP can be used for so many things, beatmaking, processing sounds or just run the beats through it and do some live performing fx.
Not a pattern seq unless you have the samples loaded onto the sp.. which I didn’t have in this case, so I recorded the bass EXT over a skip back track and used the resample to capture the bass, and added it into the seq.
It’s an auditory hallucination.. I had some troubles recording. I could’ve used the sp as an interface inside Adobe Audition to capture it clean.. but for some reason I didn’t :/
I have very little experience when it comes to Akai products, but a MPC One or something like a Maschine has a much better sequencer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make beats with the MK2. If you really dedicate your time to learn the MK2 inside out you’ll find the strength and the weaknesses.. but I do however think the MPC or Maschine are bit more user friendly, but I highly recommend anyone to have an SP in their arsenal for its versatility! 🔥👊🏻
As mentioned.. maybe not “cons”, more personal preferences. I do think a lot of these “cons” can be fixed in a firmware update! I definitely think everyone should have the SP in their arsenal 🔥👌🏻
The keyboard is Arturia Keystep.. and the way I used it in this video was recording from the computer into the sp.. at first I wanted to use the midi, but realized that my Arturia midi adapters didn’t work but I didn’t remove them. You need these Roland Boss midi cables. Here’s another video where I used the keyboard to play the bass on the keyboard th-cam.com/video/fFXaZVHQWK0/w-d-xo.html
No sidechain unfortunately.. that would be adding the compressor :/ .. I’ve sent a request for this feature. I think it will be added at some point in a firmware
Could you just use the 404 compressor and pair it with your kick and samples to create that side chain effect? Also I agree out of all the new effects they put in there they couldnt of put a muther ducker rip off? Or somethin similar?
I know some old effects have new parameters if one of those was the ability to select an input on the compressor page we'd be set but I take it from above that's not an option... Yet Devices like the kp2, mx1 and mpc live all offer a sortof ducking effect if your willing to pair them but I feel like this takes away from the portable experience using 2 devices (kp2 is quite small thou) another way would if the compressor had a filter options so it would duck frequencies but I've had mixed results with that on my machine plus
@@BoombapArt whats the best way you recomend for side chain on the new 404? And i guess on the old 404?....or your way of side chaining without using muther ducker or ablation?
Hmm.. sure it can, but I would add something easier to “program”, a device with a step sequencer or something that has a faster workflow. The 404 is definitely a good contestant for live performances if you have everything pre-made. I think I would go with a mc101, Maschine+ (expensive) or MPC One.

This worked on the old SP so don't see why it wouldn't on the new one
@@davemachine as long as the samples live somewhere on the sp it shouldn’t be a problem using a keyboard
@@gabrielrebelo Yeh it is a bit tricky, but I've found putting quantisation on helps to record all the notes more accurately.
Dope beat brother 🙌🔥🔥🔥
Thanks fam 👊🏻
Dope beat. Looking forward to you doing a tutorial on how to make a beat with it. How the workflow is.
Thanks man! Putting that on my list, I’ll try to cover that soon! 👊🏻
@@BoombapArt dope!
Can’t wait for my preorder to ship
Sweet! Who knows, by the time everyone starts getting their preorder.. hopefully there will a new firmware addressing some of the issues like chromatic, and multiple pitching =)
Pure inspiration man!
Thank you 👊🏻
So basically if I have an mpc live (better sampling, sequencing, pitching) and sp 404A (effects) there is no need to get a sp404 mkII.
Great beat as always. The new SP looks very interesting but the delivery time is a nightmare 🤯 14-18 weeks in my country.
Wow, 14-18 weeks 😱. Damn! Thanks a lot my friend. It looks awesome and with all the new features added.. I’ve had a blast messing around with it!

Nice..so many features added that i wanted.
Absolutely, so many helpful features.. still a few things that needs to be fixed!
It would be cool if you could export the pattern stems on this device. From reading the manual it doesn't seem to have this feature. Still have one on preorder tho!!
That would be a nice feature, but at least we can duplicate/crop/copy a segment of a pattern. 💪🏻
@@BoombapArt Actually that copy function would allow you to export stems. You could duplicate that pattern and remove elements till you have the individual stem and then resample.
Or make one pattern, turn the volume down of the samples you don’t want and then resample 😉👊🏻
Awesome ! ! !
Thanks 👊🏻
Sick beat man. The MK2 looks like fun. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for firmware updates though. I'm still waiting for all the bug fixes on my MV-1 to come out...come on Roland...new products are great but only if you can roll out the new firmware fixes in a timely manner imho...anyway. Love your vids man. Peace
Thanks man, appreciate it 🙏🏻👊🏻 It is a lot of fun, even tho it’s faster and easier to use, still the unique sp workflow. Oh, haven’t used my MV1 in a while.. maybe should make a new video with that one alongside the 404 MK2! 👊🏻

BOOM! 👊
Thank you for this. Inspiring
Thanks man 🙏🏻👊🏻

Thanks man 👊🏻
Let’s go!
BOOM! 👊🏻
Great beat and discussion. I saw you were controlling it from the keystep. Can you control effect parameters from the keystep as well? (e.g. send cc to control filter cutoff)
Thank you 👊🏻 That’s a good question, I need to investigate that further.
You can use Koala on your phone or tablet to create the sample and pitch then send it to the SP until they update or fix it.
Can you pitch multiple samples at once in Koala? One way to speed up the process is to hook it up to the computer and use the software and change the pitch that way.. if you have your computer close by.
Woooooo fireeee 🔥🔥🙏🏽🙏🏽

Boom Bap is always better than Trap... ALWAYS.
Depending on who you ask.. but I prefer boom bap over trap all day every day! 👊🏻
Music is music, the producer feel the vibe from this heart, imagination, street knowledge. Make a beat is not a easy way for all dudes, but for many people is a lifestyle, a wire in this world, against the shit of this sick planet . Salutes from Chile, Sudamérica.
Im trying to learn how to make trap beats because its in much more demand than boombap and other music which means more sales if you get good at it.
@@gdupbeats6648 -- If you follow a trend what do you do when the trend eventually ends??? People are starting to reject Trap, slowly but surely. Just like we rejected Disco in the 70s, or Boy Bands and Girl Bands in the late 90s.
Boom Bap will always be pure and un-defilable. Pure artists will live forever. People 30 years from now are still going to be amazed by guys like DJ Premier or Alchemist, or Stoup The Enemy of Mandkind, or J-Dilla or Nujabes....

Moos looking from afar... Good on!
Thanks 👊🏻
Good review, I feel like it needs direct record, just in case you want to record a live instrument on top of the loop.
That’s possible if you’re using the resampling method, or just capture your jam with the skip back sampling feature, only 25sec tho.. but the resampling works, and you can chose if you want it mixed or as a separate recording that you can add later into the pattern seq. That’s what I did with the bass..
@@BoombapArt thanks for replying back 👊🏾 , I wasn’t sure how recorded the Bass, I thought you midi it and played it chromatically.
Simplement supe🔥👍🏾💪🏾🙌🏾🌍
Thank you 🙏🏻 👊🏻
Sorry if you answered this on the other questions, just didn't find it. Are you playing a sample chromatically on the Keystep? I know theres the Chromatic shift function but I'm super curious if it can be controlled via a midi keyboard through the new Midi Out. Thanks man, love the video. Cheers
I’m playing the bass on the Keystep not in chromatic, but recorded it ext 👊🏻
This might be a dumb question but can you create full songs in this 404 ? New to SP’s used MPC’s in the past & pre-ordered this 1 so wasn’t sure. .
No such thing as a dumb question, no questions no answers 😉👊🏻. Yes, you can create a full song in the SP! They’ve added pattern chaining, but you can also use the resampling method to have each pad as a part of your track and track out these live inside your DAW.
while playback is running , Shift+Bank ../turn Encoder to lower down the whole Bank
I have a couple questions!
1:) Does it have any kind of global limiter, or FX limiter setting? I'm pretty sure that the old 404sx had an 'effects limiter' you could turn on to tame any unexpected peaks or super loud resonance that might accidentally blow peoples eardrums when using crazy FX haha
2:) In DJ Mode, can you label your tracks/pads with a song name?

Fire 🔥

@@BoombapArt Aah det är bara slå en pling när du behöver ett bollplank hahah
If you sample something and chop it up or resample it, can you drag those samples off the machine in the software so that you can use them in future projects? I’ve seen drag and drop onto the unit in videos, but never drag and drop off the unit.
Yes you can! 👊🏻
@@BoombapArt the answer I was looking for. Have the MK3 and wondering if the SP404 MK2 would compliment. You caught a new sub. Respect sir.
So can you put in rechargeable batteries and charge them up via USB-C?
Hmm, not sure if that works.. 🤔
Just got a confirmation, it doesn’t work!

Thanks man 👊🏻
Can you record into the MK2 while a sequence is playing? Looks like you are at 2:35 but not totally clear, thanks!
Not a pattern seq unless you have the samples loaded onto the sp.. which I didn’t have in this case, so I recorded the bass EXT over a skip back track and used the resample to capture the bass, and added it into the seq.
But I now realized that I just could’ve resampled my pattern while recording the bass EXT as a separate recording.. oh well..

My old sp404 had a high pitched hum… am I still hearing that on the MKii ? Or is it an auditory hallucination?
It’s an auditory hallucination.. I had some troubles recording. I could’ve used the sp as an interface inside Adobe Audition to capture it clean.. but for some reason I didn’t :/
@@BoombapArt phew!
I’m really pleased to hear that it’s not there on the new one
would you recommend roland mk2 for producing beats as a beginner? i dont know if i should get akai mpc one or roland
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
The cons will not stop me from adding this gadget to my arsenal..
As mentioned.. maybe not “cons”, more personal preferences. I do think a lot of these “cons” can be fixed in a firmware update! I definitely think everyone should have the SP in their arsenal 🔥👌🏻
@@BoombapArt 😎..
Can someone explain to me what the piano/controller/synth is and how he used it with mk2?
The keyboard is Arturia Keystep.. and the way I used it in this video was recording from the computer into the sp.. at first I wanted to use the midi, but realized that my Arturia midi adapters didn’t work but I didn’t remove them. You need these Roland Boss midi cables. Here’s another video where I used the keyboard to play the bass on the keyboard th-cam.com/video/fFXaZVHQWK0/w-d-xo.html
You do your hats like I do mine. I like at least 4.
Yeah 😊👊
Can you sidechain or even mimic a sidechain effect?
No sidechain unfortunately.. that would be adding the compressor :/ .. I’ve sent a request for this feature. I think it will be added at some point in a firmware
Could you just use the 404 compressor and pair it with your kick and samples to create that side chain effect? Also I agree out of all the new effects they put in there they couldnt of put a muther ducker rip off? Or somethin similar?
I know some old effects have new parameters if one of those was the ability to select an input on the compressor page we'd be set but I take it from above that's not an option... Yet
Devices like the kp2, mx1 and mpc live all offer a sortof ducking effect if your willing to pair them but I feel like this takes away from the portable experience using 2 devices (kp2 is quite small thou) another way would if the compressor had a filter options so it would duck frequencies but I've had mixed results with that on my machine plus
@@djprovisions7151 you kinda get the effects doing it that way.
@@BoombapArt whats the best way you recomend for side chain on the new 404? And i guess on the old 404?....or your way of side chaining without using muther ducker or ablation?
I play music at the cafe, with 3 friends (guitar, vocals, bass). can the Roland SP-404 MK2 replace the drummer?
so I don't have to add more members
Hmm.. sure it can, but I would add something easier to “program”, a device with a step sequencer or something that has a faster workflow. The 404 is definitely a good contestant for live performances if you have everything pre-made. I think I would go with a mc101, Maschine+ (expensive) or MPC One.
