- SpongeBob SquarePants has changed since its first episode, Help Wanted. Over the years, SpongeBob and the rest of Bikini Bottom have gotten a brand new style to fit the modern era. On Twitter, a fan recreated what it would look like if modern stories looked like Season 1!
Because SpongeBob SquarePants episodes have been airing since 1999, it makes sense that the show doesn't look the same today. Season 1 actually had a different way of animating the characters by using cels, making Bikini Bottom feel like a warm, welcoming place. Does the modern style of SpongeBob ruin everything built upon in the classic era, or is there something more going on here?

The original style has more charm to me. May not be as expressive with the animations, but it looked more stylish. Maybe I'm just too nostalgic for the older style
While the new art style looks alright to me, the original cel animation style sorta reminds of those old Film Roman cartoons from the 1980s/1990s, a la Garfield and Friends and a few others and I'm fond of it.
The classic style reminds me of one of those 90's and 80's cartoons it just looks very special, and nostalgic.
The original style looks so vaporwave, & eye-opening in my point-of-view ngl.
for me, i’m not into bright colors but more of a darker shade like the original.
I’m not a fan of how expressive the new animation is. To me, it comes off like they’re trying too hard and makes me cringe
The biggest problem with modern spongebob isn’t the look of it, it’s the personality of characters and overall writing of episodes.

Yup. That's what I noticed when watching new SpongeBob episodes. It's not the same not because of the animation, but because of how it is scripted.
@@glenncraigmeyer07 Stephan Hillenburg stopped writing episodes after the 3rd season and first movie. It's literally not the same show. I'm not hating on people that like the newer spongebob though.

Even so, the look of new sponge is still very bright and saturated, the direction all over the place with its animation, THEN comes the writing. Honestly they need to start somewhere so why not with it’s overall style? Rhetorical question btw

Fun fact: Season One of SpongeBob was the only season to use cel animation, a method where each individual frame was painted onto a sheet of cellophane.

Ive never realized just how baby-fied they've made Patrick appear in newer seasons after seeing those comparison photos.
It may be the nostalgia talking, but I do prefer the classic artstyle.

Seasons 1-3 and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie are the golden ages of SpongeBob and I’m glad I grew up with that
I’d say 1-4 and the first movie. Season 5 is where things start getting weird.

I actually think the Season 1 style is the best from the entire series. Even better than the Seasons 2 and 3 style.
Excluding the Greenblatt episodes, Season 2 and 3 was just too stiff for my eyes in my opinion. But I respect you.
I like 3 for how much it feels like a nice middle ground between the classic seasons and the modern ones

While the newer seasons are bright and vibrant season 1 always resticted itself with what colors to use, that along with the different texture of surfaces give it a nice feel.

Thanks for sharing my art, and the support that all of you have given, I really appreciate this kind of thing, and about to which art style I like the most.
Well, I love both styles of drawing and animation, in fact my goal wasn't to have a debate about which style is better. My curious vision only made me wonder, what would these characters look like if they still had an older style. And since they are only images it doesn't cost me that much, but an animation is something more complex and that should be appreciated no matter the year, style or the way the animators work. In any case, Thanks for the feedback :)

The one thing that I love about the artist’s style is that he made the modern episodes look almost exactly like how the show looked back in season 1. It gives it more of a sense of nostalgia and it shows an evolution of how much the entire show has changed in over 20 years. I prefer the season 1 look more because of how sophisticated the characters movements are. It may not have the same animation that seasons that followed it would be known for using, but the season 1 style still has the charm that made the characters so beloved and iconic.
To be honest. Both is great.
Style 1 is old school and nostalgic.
New style is rather... interesting and curious.
They can do a lot of stuff that wasn't possible back then and you know, I can see that. Either way, I can't see which i wouldn't enjoy out of the two.

The modern style looks generic. Especially that ghost. Looks like something that wouldn't be out of place in Danny Phantom, TUFF Puppy, etc.
if there was a way for them to use the more convenient animation methods of the newer seasons and apply those to the cozier art style of the older seasons I feel like that would be the best option

These redraws really feel so fun and charming. When you look at the modern eps, there's just something about the faces that don't seem right, but when you look season 1 or two and three, the characters and expressions are just lovable and fun to look at
Something I've always noticed about SpongeBob's art style is that he is now more rectangular than he used to be. In season 1, his edges looked like they were going narrower from head to pants.
This is impressive! Maybe there should be a big project to reanimate the episodes in the season 1 style.

I think it’s cool that someone would make a modern version of something and turn in to when it first started
I honestly like both styles the same, because the original has its charm and is what started it all, but when newer episodes are being made with newer styles, we are able to see more of what SpongeBob can really do/do more than the original can offer. Cartoons from 1990 and before will always have limitations, but as cartoons progress, like I said with SpongeBob, we can have more to the cartoon without all the limitations of cartoons of past. As the times progresses, the same thing shall happen to today's cartoon, including SpongeBob.
Whats an improvement? how have they progressed? The new shots are ugly and over the top.

Imagine an episode of the main show where they returned to original form for that episode only. That would be WILD
I really like how the show is less expressive in the earlier seasons, and there's more of an underwater theme. There's bubbles when people move, and objects like phones are drawn as shells. The old episodes were a lot less zany, they had a more mature tone and more adult humor to them. Everyone around Spongebob seemed perpetually annoyed and just meandering through life, which was a better contrast with Spongebob's overly chipper attitude ("Coming to bed, dear? Yes, honey.")

Drawing new media in retro style is very interesting in my book. I mostly do the same myself. Seriously, the way he drew these screenshots looks exactly like something from an actual classic SpongeBob episode.

I recall watching the My Leg! Episode where they recreated the first leg gag in the show in the modern art style and it made me realize, it can go both ways too. The new and old art styles of the show are charming in their own way, the 1999 style being more personal and natural to look at, while the 2010s are more eye catching and make room for smoother scenes. I respect both as the show utilizes each to its fullest.
Would LOVE to see TH-camrs animate a Spongebob episode in the old style.

Well i like the new versions of animations it might be brighter and smoother but it add ao much more details and nice movement the old style is great but it was kinda blurry on backgrounds but it was more classic and home feeling if you all understand there is alot of ups and downs but they are both great

In my opinion, I prefer the modern's more vibrant colors, but also prefer classic's more cartoonish expressions.

I'm personally more of a season 2 lover when it comes to the best style but I think both season 1 and modern spongebob are unique and great in their own ways. I like them both for different reasons. I lean towards season 1 for nostalgia though.
If they polished up the original style, I think it would work wonders. As you know, ALL of the characters went through major design changes to fit the modern theme. If they kept the original styles, but switched to modernized animation techniques, I think it would work better. Don’t know if that’s even possible, but hey, that’s my thoughts.
The way he was able to replicate the style to the point it looks like it was a screenshot from a season 1 episode is beautiful!

Not to mention, S1-3’s pacing were great! 4 onwards, is just too random so fast. Something’s popping up in the screen every half a second. Makes my eyes hurl
To be honest, I grew up watching the old art style of Spongebob and I still love it to this day, you just can't beat the classics, so I'm gonna go with the original version for both the artwork and the show.
I've said it before, and i'll say it again. The amount of charm season one has is all in part to the cel animation. Like It is so calm and set back compared to the later seasons using digital animation.

You know, this is something that I have always wondered: What if the cartoons these days reverted to their golden age?
I talk about the SImpsons too, but Spongebob work as well. Artstyle is a major thing, and also personality. In the past, characters weren't hollows, they were beings.
I’d say a happy mix of both styles would fit the series. It would still have its trademark charm but it would be somewhat cleaner for the modern age.

I really like the lighting and overall aesthetic that season 1 Spongebob used. Everything is much more detailed

This is for the record, the coolest piece of SpongeBob-related art I've seen in a while. I've always wondered what the modern episodes would look like in the original style. As for which style I prefer, I'm season 1-3 all the way. The animation today is just too bright and overly expressive for me. I prefer the more relaxed feel of the original episodes.
The tree dome one is incredibly authentic looking.
The old style was so good and unique. I know we cant go back on time but i think the artstyles change to spongebob were so drastic that it seems like another cartoon based on the property

Cell animation is much much expensive than computer animation
And computer animation has much more tools to speed up process of making an 11 minute animation

I do really love the old styles from seasons 1-3 for their charms and such, but I also really love the style they’ve been using since the later half of season 9 tbh for its super big expressiveness!

Okay, now I actually think Season 1 of Spongebob (1999-2000) is my favorite Season, now. I love the way how all the characters look. Some of the classic Episodes are actually very beautifully written stories.

The classic art style could probably take the wacky facial expressions of the newer seasons and make them less annoying to see

I prefer the old style. Not only does it has this certain charm to it (as everyone has stated), it also looks like kids had a hand in drawing it, having it imperfect and whatnot. That's what really connects me to the older style.
I like more the older style, because it looks somehow darker, rustier, and as you said, more "Homemade", which I think works better for the personality that the show originally had. The new one seems too bright, a lot more childish and "too artificial" to feel natural, which again, I also think it fits with the new personality of the show.
