Great round, a few observations which might help you: 1. Anytime you talk on the tee about "having to get it there" or "worrying about landing short" you always pull it. - I would humbly suggest using more club, or simply accepting you're going to be short. 2. When you're short-sided on your chips, you seem like you land short or duff. - Perhaps take less loft in these situations and try and bump and run, I think the less it's in the air, the more confidence you'll have. 3. You use your driver a lot, even when you identify the trouble. I think if you had used it four or five times less, your score would have been better. 4. You seem nervous over those 3-4 footers, which I think is effecting your poise on the longer shots, because you're scared of going 3 or 4 foot past. When you do get to the practice green, get confident on that distance. 4. You have an excellent attitude, you seem to really enjoy the game and put the bad shots behind you. Keep that up! Thanks for the video, hope the advice isn't too annoying, can't wait till the next one.
Appreciate the advice mate! I definitely think you're spot on with the first point. I give the swing a bit extra and then just end up turning it over. I'll take it on board 👍
Not sure if you watch Liam on Golf mates but he did a video recently where he clubbed to the back of the green. The results were eye opening. We as amateur golfers all ways over estimate how far we will hit the ball, we judge distance by our best shots. When i get out next i'm defo going to try this method . I also went to see Marcus a couple of years ago and pretty much saw the same gains as you. Unfortunately due to a work back and hand issue haven't played much over the last year or so. Looking forward to getting back out this year.
Hey man. I just wanted to say I appreciate your videos. I just started golf in August and there were so many videos of pros playing and giving advice and it was a bit overwhelming. Seeing you and how you've progressed in the time I've been watching has been a much more relatable, helpful and inspiring experience. Keep it up 👍🏾
Nice to watch some proper winter golf as I put my layers on ready for today's round. A nice reminder to put an extra bit behind the putts 😂 nice round mate, your game has come on so far since I started watching your channel a while back. 🎉
It's been awesome following your progress seeing as you and I started golf round about the same time almost two years back. When it comes to putting, one of the best sayings I ever came across by Dr Bob Rotella that transformed my putting is "Don't putt to two putt. ALWAYS putt to make it". That helped get my handicap down, now at 11, and has seen me often one-putting and often having 30 or less putts in a round. When all else is failing, I know, once I get on the green, that ball is dropping! So, I share the same with you and I hope it shaves more strokes off your rounds! "Always putt to make it".
When I was younger playing on winter greens the group of us that played had a 'Winter Green Rule'. Essentially if you landed on the cut winter green you had a choice of a) take a score with 2 putts OR ) putt out. Unless really close we tended to opt for the former!
Enjoy watching your videos Luke. Lovely to watch the consistent hitting, even in the winter conditions. Brilliant narrative, despite runny nose due to the cold. Wonder what the temperature was, minus 4? Liked the T. Though, really nice! Well done. Look forward to more videos. All the best. 👍👏
Well done for getting out for some winter golf. Fair effort taking into account that your short game is a bit of a struggle at the moment (normally a plus for you).
Great video!! I can’t believe how far you’ve come in a short time. When I first started watching, we were hitting our clubs about the same distance….now you’re cranking them. 150y 8 iron!!! Wow!
Very enjoyable winter round. I’d invite you to go back and watch one of your videos from like a year ago. Your ball striking is much improved. In the past lots of shots leaking out to the right - not so anymore. Great progress.
First time caller; Winter golf is a bit of a lottery in UK ( and I'm inland Scotland so its often shitty), however I need to play in winter to keep my swing going otherwise it take weeks to get in tune in the better weather. Course management is King at all times of year. if you are going to miss, then miss tactically
@ 16:30 I think you should’ve went with a 5 or 6 iron, aimed out to the right, away from the tree & closed the face of the club so it pointed at the green, then just hooked it around the tree ! 👍 love the content, your swing has improved so much since I started watching your vids , it’s looking good! 👍🙏
Pretty good play, you need to use a mallet putter or something a little heavier in the winter, especially on slower greens. Thats what I do anyway, much easier to get the ball to the hole.
Great mixed round again Luke and a decent score in winter conditions,Wooley Park golf club always looks a good course when I watch James Robinson golf channel on TH-cam and he puts some good stuff out there from that course, when did your shoot the video and how much was it to play? Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Stuart! yeah it's a brilliant course, probably my favourite in the area. I filmed this in December and think I paid about £35 for a mid week round 👍
Wee tip especially in winter,if it's an 8 iron use a 7 always play 1 more club and play within yourself. @@UpDownGolf They're about the size of a tea plate. When you're putting across a fairway in the winter, the ball is making more moves than a hyperactive break-dancer. Putting into a standard-sized hole is a joke. I've seen people 3 putt from 3 feet. If we're on a temporary winter-green with a normal hole, a two-putt is always conceded. Put the first one close (with a chance of it going in) and then pick up and move on. If it's an oversized hole then you putt out. Obviously, it would be different in a competition, but then again, I wouldn't play in a competition with temporary greens, tees etc.
Nice One Luke. You must have found one of the only days where it wasn’t raining, or blowing a hooley or both. You’re definitely an improved golfer with your approaches.
Great to see your efforts again Luke, winter golf is so much fun....(not..😠!) You really must do something about the chipping & putting side of your game, It's costing you so many shots mate🤔!! But keep up the grand work, I'm off to Spain or is it Portugal..🤣🤣??
Looks a good course did you see James Robinson lol Still not playing myself not played since October to wet and to cold for me I just hate winter golf also Golf Clubs for Cash do a good range in putters and will take that really wierd sounding putter off you lol
You should feel blessed to be able to play in the winter. Where I live, in a city with about 240,000 people, only one course stayed open into December and now there are zero outdoor options. Anyway, you'll have to trust me but your game and my game are similar in many ways, we hit about the same distances and our hcp is roughly the same. I just want to share one thing that differs and maybe you can give it a try. When I come to a hole that it at the very limit of a given clubs distance, as you did on the par 3 at 22:57, I always go with the stronger club so that I don't have to hit it perfect and I don't have to hit it with 100% effort. It is much easier for me to hit a nice, relaxed 3/4 9 iron than it is to hit a perfect 8 iron with 100% effort. And the worst thing that can happen is you can be on the back of the green, or perhaps even chipping on from there, instead of in front. Anyway, I've been doing that for years and it's always helped me :)
Might benefit from using less loft around greens, they're soft so you're ending up short a lot and the kicks are more pronounced with the higher trajectory of your 54. No shame in running 8s or 9s up to the hole. Easier strike too. Check out Dan Grieve's stuff. Genius.
@@UpDownGolf Worse things ever Luke, I hate the things. We use them at one of my clubs (Halifax Golf Club) but not at the other (Halifax West End). Crazy that two courses less than five miles apart can be so different 😉

You should try a mallet head putter. Leaving that birdie putt short on 5 was criminal. Besides the putting which lets face it we all struggle with on wet cold greens, you played better in this round than I can remember seeing you play mate, it's cold and shitty lies, damp ground so losing loads of carry and run out and on a luckoer day with better putting could have shot 10 less there easily, well done mate!
Cheers dude! No same putter, does it sound better? I had tried to reduce the background noise on the previous video, I wonder if that had made it sound strange
Keep the shoulder turn, but restrict the hip turn on the backswing. You're turning the hips at least twice as much as you should going back. More moving parts means more places things can go wrong. You turn your hips so far that it causes lateral shift to keep your balance. That one change and a better short game attitude and you'd be single digit in no time.
Going from really fast to really slow greens always not going to be ideal - but great scoring considering everything. Hopefully UK gets some decent weather 😂 nice to watch you in bad conditions whilst it’s decent over here mind ⛳️
@@UpDownGolf I used to play fives and ski, but golf is the sport for me so fives and skiing was binned, too many risks of getting properly injured - look forward to you getting back and getting the matches back on. In all honesty I am bored with the Good Goods, the Bob Does sports, and the Rick Shiels channels - we need more down to earth real life golf channels like yours.
Since you're in the UK, if I were you, I'd run, not walk to go take a short-game clinic or lesson from Dan Grieve at Woburn. He's a short-game instruction wizard and will have you knocking strokes off in no time.
In some ways you're thinking like a single figures golfer already. Your positive thinking is excellent. Give those putts a chance. I reckon you're still thinking like a 20 handicapper and accepting a 3 putt,
@@UpDownGolf My original comment made a lot more sense when I was typing it but you get my drift. You seem to strike the ball well with your long irons 🏌️
Great video. You have a lot of self-doubt which I think is hurting you. For example, on hole 4, why are you "begging for a 2-putt?" Instead, your thought should be, "Let's sink this for birdie." That self doubt and negative mindset has real-world implications. Instead of being disappointed you didn't make birdie, you are relieved you made par. Change that mindset, and you'll see better scores. Believe me!
Thanks Jeff. I think you're totally right. I've had a few rounds that have completely eroded my confidence on the greens which is why I've ended up like you saw in the video. I'll keep that in mind for next time 👍
Mate your putting problems all stem from really poor and inconsistent setup. When your hands are that close to your legs at address, you don’t have the space to control the stroke with your shoulders and it becomes “handsy” which can cause inconsistent distance control. You also accelerate the putter head through impact a lot of the time which, again, causes inconsistencies with strike and distance control. Look for putts where you have a far longer follow through than backstroke for reference to this. Opposite is desirable. You need to square up your alignment throughout (feet and possibly shoulders open) check ball position (just forward of centre is ideal) and eyeline (just inside or over ball is best for the vast majority of golfers). Thank me later when you start getting a much better roll 👍😁
I probably did say that didn’t I 🤣 It depends how much you want to improve but 3 putts and poor putting in general have a very big and immediate impact on score. Not sure how many 3 putts you had in this round but you definitely missed a lot of makeable putts and had a bad short miss. Check out the first two putts you hit about 4:30 into the video and these highlight the points I’ve made. Good setup & stroke gives you a much better chance of centre face strike giving you better roll and making speed control easier and more consistent. Worth getting right if you want to lower your scores.
Nah I totally agree Iain, putting is by far costing me the most strokes at the moment. I've been plagued with three putts recently and it's definitely something I need to spend so time improving 👍
Great to see winter golf. All the TH-camrs playing in Portugal and Spain is understandable, but not very relatable to 95%+ golfers.

I tried a mallet putter and really didn't get on with it. I'm wondering if it could be the man holding the putter? 😂
Great round but disqualified I’m afraid for 15 clubs in the bag 😉
🤣
Unbelievable spot!
@@UpDownGolf I didn’t want to be that guy , but you said your bag was heavy 😂 looking forward to what a 9 hadicapper looks like series
My home club hope you enjoy
I love Woolley Park 👍
Yellow tee? Why not white?
The yellow tees are the visitor tees in the UK
Some cracking shots there, especially as the temperature would have taken 20 yards off. Well done!
Thanks Ken! I was pretty happy with this round 👍
Putting a problem why use a blade ???
I tried a mallet and couldn't get on with that either 😂
"Stupid" fairway mats replicate firm summer conditions and protect the course for summer - when it matters. Winter golf is just to keep us moving.
👍
I play my best games in the cold. Less people in front and behind me.
Yeah it's definitely quieter in the cold
Luke, where's Fents, where's Woody and where are the videos?
They will be back, I promise! I damaged my knee ligament playing football so had to take a few weeks off playing golf. Healing nicely now though 👍
Jealous...where I leave we have 10 inches of snow.....;p
Ouch Keycay!
Since you're in the UK, if I were you, I'd run, not walk to go take a short-game clinic or lesson from Dan Grieve at Woburn. He's a short-game instruction wizard and will have you knocking strokes off in no time.
I've seen a lot of his stuff online Wade, he's great 👍
Where's Robbo?
Hiding from me
Mate dunno what ur talking about… its like 40 degrees here 😊
Not jealous at all...
@@UpDownGolf haha
Ur hitting much more solid than last time i watched.. big respect from 🇦🇺
Thanks man, enjoy the sun!
In some ways you're thinking like a single figures golfer already. Your positive thinking is excellent. Give those putts a chance. I reckon you're still thinking like a 20 handicapper and accepting a 3 putt,
Interesting assessment, I think you're right you know
I love a preferred lie. I always seem to end up with the worst seem to end up with terrible lies in summer.
Haha I do miss them when the better weather comes back round tbh 😂
@@UpDownGolf My original comment made a lot more sense when I was typing it but you get my drift. You seem to strike the ball well with your long irons 🏌️
Thanks, they have their off days but served me well here 👍
Get your self some short game lessons from Chris Dennis.
It's definitely needs some sharpening up
Not going anywhere near the course when they’re playing off mats
They're not as bad as some at Woolley tbf
Great video. You have a lot of self-doubt which I think is hurting you. For example, on hole 4, why are you "begging for a 2-putt?" Instead, your thought should be, "Let's sink this for birdie." That self doubt and negative mindset has real-world implications. Instead of being disappointed you didn't make birdie, you are relieved you made par. Change that mindset, and you'll see better scores. Believe me!
Thanks Jeff. I think you're totally right. I've had a few rounds that have completely eroded my confidence on the greens which is why I've ended up like you saw in the video. I'll keep that in mind for next time 👍
Brush up on the putting and work on the driver and your be on single figures soon
Thanks Paul, that's the aim this year 👍
winter golf is just the worst
I had a lot of fun this round but you can have some stinkers in winter for sure
the haircut's gone a bit dodgy
Very dodgy, strong hat hair that
need to sack the camera man lol
Haha he'll get there
Mate your putting problems all stem from really poor and inconsistent setup.
So you're saying it's a shit show from top to bottom really? haha. Thanks mate, appreciate the advice 👍
@@UpDownGolf Yeah, but it’s our shit show! 🤣🤣👍
Who wants to watch bad golf?
😴
@@UpDownGolf Exactly, now far k arf.
