Love this Anime it's extremely well written and it also made me discover Go, the greatest game of all times. Started playing it 14 years ago and now I am a 3 dan. Guys try this game it's amazing once you start grabbing the complexity of it.

This anime is perfect. Period. It has everything. An amazing soundtrack, Scenes that will leave you on the end of your seat, scenes that will make you extremely emotional. The character development of Hikaru is crazy. It's like you grow up along side him.
This is still one of my favorite animes and mangas also. Got me heavily into the game for several years though I somehow found the game first and then realized I had seen the game in shonen jump. I still play occasionally, but mostly just watch because the game to this day makes me feel super grounded and better about everything.

You're totally right. The most amazing thing about Hikaru No Go is that unlike other spokon where the main character starts passionate since the beginning about his sport, in Hikaru no Go we can appreciate how Hikaru's interest in Go grows through the series, how he becames one with Go, and how he is devastated when the one who introduced him in Go isn't there anyomere to play with him. Thanks for talking about this masterpiece.

I remember picking up the manga back in 2010 back in middle school when my brother would bring the library books home. It was my first manga and I had trouble reading right to left at the start but I was hooked. I loved the banter between Sai and Hikaru and how he grew a passion towards playing Go. I couldn’t believe I was so invested in a manga about a board game lol. I remember going to the local bookstore when I heard the last few volumes were published in North America (2011?) and I hid from the employees while I read the books in between the shelves, so that I wouldn’t get kicked out. Then I found out there was an anime and I think I watched it back when people could upload subbed episodes on TH-cam without being taken down. Let me tell you it was even more of a tearjerker watching the anime and I was snot-faced crying during the climax of the story. I didn’t care much for anime before Hikaru No Go - I’d just passively watch Dragon Ball Z and Naruto with my brother, but after that show it gave me a newfound appreciation for anime.

I feel that way too and I just finished both but when I think about it the ending was perfection. One of the few anime that ended at the right point. You can just imagine Hikaru's rematch with Su-Yeong Hong (I think that's how it's pronounced, Hikaru telling Akira about Sai in the future after finally catching up to him and defeating him in an official game, etc. It would've honestly gotten boring if it kept continuing to show that. What kind of characters would they have to introduce to support Hikaru's growth and what other thing could they have introduced after the Hokuto Cup to keep to interesting? It would be easier to make mistakes while writing and would've spoiled the masterpiece. Many animes and manga go downhill because they continue for way too long. The series served it's purpose and passed the message it wanted to give successfully proving to be influential in the lives of everyone who watched it.

I still love this manga.. then and now.. you're right! It really is complex and the characters make this story... I still love that rivalry you just feel it. One of my favorite scenes is when orchi is told and shown the game by Akira... and the look of shock upon the realization... just awesome.

  • @madamadadane7989

I can't believe people consider the anime trash:/ just because of the ending and the dated animation 😭. It followed the manga honestly pretty well and it was really fun seeing the scenes play out longer than the panels and i really appreciated it- I could be biased myself. The OP and EDs were too good to boot. Even moreso, I really loved the performance of the Japanese seiyuus bringing the characters to life. Sanae, Tomoko, Chiba, and Keiji were my absolute faves in capturing their personalities. I just really liked the pacing. And the way they integrated the gameplay with legitimate Go plays and having Yukari Sensei made a simpleton like me learn the game. I bought the GBA games just for the hell of it. I agree so much with the subtle changes of Obata's art, the way Akira and Hikaru grew up so realistically- something about his art pre-Death Note and Bakuman was so charming.

I'm currently reading the manga; I had read about a volume's worth back when it was being published in the U.S. Shonen Jump releases in like 2003-2004 but never followed through with it at the time as my parents stopped buying those for me shortly after (I was 10 back then). Anyways I'm in volume 8 and really enjoying the story development taking place..

I'm an older anime fan as well, but your experience and my experience are perfectly mirrored. It's still by far my favorite anime, and I as well began to play it somewhat poorly for a decent while after watching it. Also, yes, it is the best rivalry of any series/movie I've ever watched, it really was the characters that are so well put together in this show. Also, you're right about the end, I never wanted it to end. I got many people to watch this series, and all of them loved it, and I remember one of them saying to me he was "really hesitant to start it because it was 75 episodes long, but once he started, 75 episodes was nowhere near long enough."

I picked up this manga when i was in 6th grade and i got hooked up. I actually took the time to learn the game and understand more stuff about it. After learning the game, i went to rewatch the anime and now i look at this anime differently. It used to look like stones getting placed on the board. Now its more clear to me. One specific episode when Mitani loses to that man who was left handed at the go salon and Shindou (Sai) plays him, i finally understand how Sai completely destroyed him.

I was just thinking about this. I wondered if it was well done, or if the game was set-up like boxing, or really any fighting is in movies. Rather weak in reality. Glad to hear they backed this show up even further by going the distance. I await the day I can rewatch it and understand it fully.

I too consider this anime one of the greatest of all time. The artwork, the music and pacing... everything was great imo. Many scenes, dialogues and vibes were so realistic, they could have taken place in real life, and combined with the well executed pacing, this anime literally made me feel like I lived in Japan for a while. There aren't many anime today that give off those same vibes, the shorter animes (12 episodes) can't possible compete with 'Hikaru no Go', which has about 75 episodes plus a bonus movie. That's why 'Hikaru no Go' is one of a kind, a masterpiece!

I remember this from years ago around when it was still relatively new. like 2005 ish. I keep coming back to this story like you. What hit me the most recent time(about 1-2 months ago) was how good the OST was. the intro/outro music and the scores that play throughout. so well done. They left it at a good end too if you consider where the manga closed with the sai cliffhanger at the very end. So well done. Its the characters 100%; without even understanding the game itself you get invested in the storyline. hope this leads to future generations discovering this. This series helped me realize i like story and characters more than just fighting and action. The other anime/manga i keep re-watching is Hunter x Hunter. Action and a story with character development. CHEERS😁

Umm although not a sequel, I am not sure if you have heard of the Chinese drama that was released a few years back. It is amazing in my opinion! And I came to this video because I became interested in the anime after watching the drama! Interesting Easter egg about the anime appears near the end of the drama too (, which somewhat connects the world with the world of the manga/anime. Haha)! Lots of emotions. 😂😂

My only regrets are the ending (why does it have to end...) and the fact that we don't see Akari too much after he become an insei. I would have loved 1 or 2 pages where hikaru and tsutsui talk after the hokuto cup...

I would have never found this show if it wasn’t for Toonami either but ever since then I’ve probably watched this show probably about 4-5 times and read the manga at least a few times as well.
Every story arc, every game, every new challenge still captures my attention every single time. Much better than I can say for many other series which are more popular - it’s very rare that I won’t skip an arc here or there or start a rewatch from a particular arc.

I'm just about finished watching the series and am planning on making a first impressions video with a direction to this video if anyone wants to know more, learn the facts about the series. :D I only ever read the first few chapters of the manga so I was delighted to find this series on Hulu and started binge watching it on December 18.

The last few episodes also seem to document the surprising end of centuries of Japanese domination of the game as it moves to Korea and China. They started playing on the internet, and in real life the true ghost in the board turns out to be AI.

This show got me playing Go back in middle school. That was a solid 10 years ago and a passing mention of Hikaru sent me on a nostalgia trip

I personally consider Hikaru no Go one of my favourite Anime ever. And for me, it is definitely not nostalgia. I discovered it maybe 2 or 3 years ago and it would have been around age 25.
Maybe I'm not doing some of the newer shows justice, since I can tell they are objectively better. But Hikaru no Go... I don't know. I just enjoy it so much and have already watched it like 5 times. (Though, I tend to skip a number of episodes near the end. Both the China arc and the... "searching" part, if you know what I mean)

Those are great parts you’re skipping - but I’m really glad you enjoyed the show as much as you did! 😁 Such a great series!

@@TheAnimeDude I did watch them on my first watch.
The Chinese arc is probably pretty good, but where it is placed just feels very unfortunate to me. It's a bit of a side story and it happens at the same time as the much more interesting main story. I want to know what's happening with that, goddamnit!
Maybe I should watch those bits in isolation. I'd probably enjoy it a lot more.
As for the searching bit... I do watch parts of it - mostly the games. The other parts... just make me too sad.

This is one of my all time favourite anime/manga, felt really sad when it ended. Felt event sadder when I found out the show ended because a korean player threatend with legal actions, I think it was because of the likeness to him of one of the characters who lost against hikaru in the show.

Hikaru no Go teaches about the cultivation and appreciation of genius. The game of Go is a genius which recognizes others geniuses who may learn it. Great writing and art.

The rules is more complex than chess. The premises are simple.
But the execution takes a lot of calculation and computing power.
There's a reason the first chess AI is developed 10 years earlier than the first Go AI.
With chess if you remembered all the rule. You can mostly play without making illegal move. Albeit very basically.
In go... Even if you have remembered and understood all the rules. You'll probably be making illegal move or stop to consider if a spot is good to put your pieces in or not pretty often for the first 20-30 games you play.

Feel like they’re very very different, but may be something to this recommendation, since Monster is one of my favorite anime + one of my top 5 manga all time, haha. Love Hikaru no Go too of course, but while I give the Hikaru no Go manga a 9/10 on how much I personally love it, Monster is one of my very few 10/10s. 💯 (& I’m a pretty harsh critic, my Anilist average score for manga is like a 5/10, haha.)

This show is also an AMAZING gay love story despite the fact that it's all just subtext. Hikaru and Akira very quickly develop some strong romantic tension as they grow older and by the end of the series they are very much a couple.
