The Alamodome is going to be around as long as there's events going on and no NFL team, UTSA football needs a place to play unless they build an on-campus stadium, the only way the Alamodome goes is if an NFL team comes to San Antonio via expansion or relocation as the Alamodome is used as a temporary venue until a new stadium is built, in ending, the Ginger loves to put an overemphasis on natural light.

San Antonio native here, the Alamodome is doing fine, at least it’s not an eyesore or ugly and it’s been pretty much well kept over the years and I believe has had 3 renovations in the 30 years since its inception. I remember when it hosted the Saints games when Katrina happened, heck I worked those games and it was packed and well received. SA was really hoping to finally get a team but they decided to return to Houston instead. Having attended last years WWE Royal Rumble it was very exciting and was packed. Again it still looks good and honestly there’s not a bad seat in the dome. It’s a good sign that the NCAA still sees the Alamodome as a worthy host of the Final Four and believe me people show up from all over the US.

Every team gets a huge hotel down town and some times it across the street from their rivals which makes a lot of banter between teams leaving the hotels. The river walk is an awesome atmosphere. Every team picks a restaurant and the team fans go there. There are a lot of hotels in the area that people can just walk to the stadium. The stadium gets upgrades every Final Four. Ex NBA fan here. I have a love/hate relationship with the Spurs now that I've grown up.
I went to my first Spurs game was probably about 8 yrs old & that was at the Hemisphere Arena in the late 80's & early 90's. The Spurs hated that arena, it was kinda small & the seating was awkwardly flat which gave it visibility issues.
I do remember the big fuss about building the Alamodome to possibly bring in an NFL team cause the Cowboys were f'n huge & SA wanted to cash in on that. The city and surrounding areas voted on whether to build the damn thing but the adults were not happy about having to raise taxes to get the thing built.
It was built, no NFL team took the bait so they moved the Spurs there & they hated it. It was too big & the seats were too steep & it wasn't intimate enough. And the Spurs were talking shit about leaving if they didn't get what they want.
So they build what is now called the Frost Bank Center just for the Spurs & now, guess what, the Spurs don't like it. Notice a theme here?
And yes, the Frost Bank Center is in a bad part of town, it's more of an industrial area & run down cause crime while the Alamodome is not that much nicer of a spot but at least there are hotels in the area.
SATX, just keep having random events at the Alamodome & just market it as a "Mega Event Center"

Having been to every d1 stadium in the state of Texas, every original big12 school, and the rose bowl and USC, gotta say the Alamo dome is top 5, maybe top 3 on that list
Games I've been to there in last few years have been awesome-- Lowe and upper decks nearly full and not having natural light has a really cool effect for a college venue
Close to the river walk, totally unique feel for college venue
If I'm not mistaken, UTSA made an agreement to sell a portion of land just across from the Alamo dome that they owned for the new spurs venue to extend their lease there
Alamo dome will be their home stadium until the city can get an NFL franchise
San Antonio deserves an NFL team, but will not get it until Jerry Jones either passes or sells the cowboys-- he has closed every attempt that they have made
Side note, I've never understood why the Texans do not do some preseason games/mini camp items in San Antonio. Only 3 hrs from Houston, and Houston has just given the the territory over to the cowboys....if they did some summer training there, I think San Antonio could add to the base of the Houston market and steal away from the cowboys strangle hold, make a lot more sense that when the Texans were practicing in west Virginia....

The State Basketball tournaments are held here for boys and girls, UTSA really has nowhere else to play football games here, it hosts many graduations for local public schools and UTSA , plus the Alamo Bowl and the Brahmas. It's not great, but it's serviceable, and it honestly has to be for now.

San Antonio will only have NBA Spurs. San Antonio is considered by many a "Po' Town." A town mostly catered to poor people. Just look at the type of restaurants and other businesses in the area. Not trying to put San Antonio down, but the NFL never really looked at San Antonio as one of its markets. Remember, the Alamo Dome opened the same year Charlotte and Jacksonville were awarded NFL teams.

Native San Antonian here. Excellent video!
Let’s all admit that the Alamodome is a dump. It’s always been a dump. It was built by the City of San Antonio for $183M and finished in 1993. The indoor professional football stadium was built without the input of a professional team tenant. As a result, it lacks almost every feature that an NFL team requires. It lacks any modern technology. It is leaky and broken down. It costs the City of SA millions to maintain each year. It has been a net loss leader and an albatross from the beginning. It lacks enough premium features (such as premium suites) for a professional sports organization. The City has shoe horned other sports games, conventions, graduations and anything else that might fit 72,000 people. As a venue, the building lacks the facilities, comforts and conveniences of dedicated sports arenas, convention halls or concert amphitheaters.
On the positive side, does have fairly reliable air-conditioning, a must in South Texas.
The Alamodome should be demolished and replaced by a new Spurs Stadium, in my opinion.

They are two very different size venues. The Alamodome can hold 60-70 thousand people. A basketball arena holds about 18-20. A city the size of San Antonio needs venues of both sizes for various event.

It was the biggest waste of SA taxpayer money for a failed attempt at getting an NFL team. The Alamodome is possibly the ugliest building in SA. It's terrible on the inside ... terribly outdated. It should be sold to the Spurs and then the Spurs can tear it down and build the arena they want... on their own dime ... and no taxes from the citizens of SA. The Alamodome is a joke of a building.
