Faulty HDMI Port on LG Television. No Signal Fault

  • In this video I demonstrate how to fix your faulty HDMI ports on your television. If your TV shows 'NO SIGNAL' then by heating up the HDMI chip you can once again enjoy them working. It shows you how to trace the HDMI trip and it getting fixed in real time. This FIX is only a short term measure and the HDMI chip will fail again but you may get a few months out of it (or a few days). Make sure the TV is unplugged/disconnected from the electric power supply before attempting this repair as electricity from a TV can kill.

    Like you said it's a shot term solution. The problem is that one or more pins on the HDMI chip has lost it's connection to the board because of expansion and contraction over the years. The easiest , permanent fix is to use a soldering iron and solder wick. Lay the wick over the all the pins on one side of the chip and then slowly drag the hot iron down the wick . Do the same for the other 3 sides. Be careful not to pause to long as you go over the pins since you don't want to suck all the solder out from under the pins. The goal is to heat the pins just enough to get the solder to turn liquid without sucking the pins dry. Sucking them dry is just about impossible anyway but heat is the enemy of chips so don't hang around too long with the hot iron as you go along.
    Using the soldering wick makes it virtually impossible to solder 2 pins together by accident. If you just run the hot iron over the pins without the wick it is VERY easy to solder 2 pins together.

    This is my solution. Suddenly all of my HDMI ports from an 50 inch LG Tv stopped working. I've watched a lot of this videos. My HDMI ports were listed on the menu (that mean that they have power) but always showed NO SIGNAL. I've tried to use this method but decided to follow Carlos Frontado (user in the comments) and bought the chip that is responsible for HDMI ports (2 USD on ebay) and found a profissional that changed the chip on the board (a TV repair profissional) and voila...it now works. This is my advice. Change the chip.

    Thank You. This works!! I have a 48 inch LG about 5 years old and it was working perfectly up until recently. The TV is located in my basement rec room that isn’t used that much anymore since my son moved away. Like most homing pigeon kids he returned however the TV would not work on HDMI. I think now that he’s using it again and just getting it back warming up again the problem may go away permanently.. Your right that it doesn’t take much heat. In fact I decided to try it by just heating directly onto the back without even disconnecting anything. I used a 1200W heat gun about 6-8 inches away for no more then 15 seconds and the HDMI ports became available again. Easiest TV Repair Ever. Thanks Again.

So I used flux on box and then reflowed with a heat gun and a meat thermometer. Worked like a charm. Let's see how long this lasts. Before I took my TV apart (or bought a new tv) , I investigated other possible solutions. Adapters: If you choose the male hdmi with female vga (which is also 1080 on the back of the TV) AND the audio output, you can do a permanent fix.. I found several on Amazon for $8.00 even including a mini-hdmi to usb and the 3mm audio. Works wonderfully. And the hairdryer solutions ? My electrical engineer friend says it's NOT the chip that is fixed by the heat but the micro cracks in the solder in the board, that expand and reconnect once heated. And slowly recedes and disconnects. This way it's permanent.

    • @zytechnology
      @zytechnology 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Your engineer friend needs a bit of an update. The QSOP Chip actually has maybe just one detached leg causing it to have a little space between the contacts.Due to the heat expansion the leg gets a bit larger and it may touch the solder of the mainboard like it should , then due to surface tension or adhesion it actually picks up a small bit of solder paste and reconnects with the main board. BUT because of the cold drawing back the leg again to its original size it pulls this solder back in a fine line and only the fine line of solder >( like a spider web string ) is now connected. NOW you have HDMI Signal again , BUT because of the process of shutting off you tv and then turning it back on there is Thermal stress that will likely break this little spider string in the near future. The Proper fix is : Put the Mainboard flat on the Table and dump a coin on it. Use a syringe to put FLUX on it. Heat the Chip to about 240 to 250 Celsius for about 15 Seconds until you can MOVE another component with a plyer next to the chip. If you are able to move another component next to the chip that means you have reached the proper temperature. you can now withdrawal the heat SLOWLY ( about an inch every second. This will help with the thermal contraction being done almost properly. The weight of the coin ( anything ,,, maybe just a cent or two ! )will put enough weight on the Chip to put it down properly. .... NOW if things are still not fixed then you MAY have a broken trace (this is where the fun would start for me ! ) ... To pinpoint the issue further you could use some ice Spray , but proceed with caution.Even a TV that has been disconnected for 6 month may still hold a charge up to 300 Volts or more in its capacitors... It wouldnt be fun... Trust me :) Kind regards Frank

    Lg should take responsibility, the INFINIA series televisions are destroyed alone by bad bga welding of the processor, if they look for LG LED TV failures they will find thousands and thousands of victims, out of warranty no longer get spare parts, the reballing could be a solution but few do it well and give guarantee of lasting work, as I say LG should take care more to their buyers is a shame the abysmal amount of users damaged by this failure even in more modern televisions.

    It worked! My neighbor tossed his 42" and said the part was no longer available to fix the inputs. I figured maybe eBay might have a board. I did find one, but it was too expensive for repair of a 10yo TV!
    Propped the hairdryer right up to the chip with my opened TV lying flat and let it heat for 5 minutes. I also saw that a screw was missing at the corner of the board. Neighbor had taken it apart already, so maybe he lost one. I found one to put there. Gotta make sure the board stays flat! I sprayed rubbing alcohol into the hot ports and swabbed them a bit. Back together, and all good! Thanks!
    Another TV I fixed had a known issue with a screw not being grounded. Something like that. Easy to repair except someone else had ruined the board trying to DIY solder. I spent money for a board anyway because it is a nice older plasma, large screen. Still working.

    yes that is a good short-term fix and the other one when you bake in the oven for 10 to 12 mins,the way i have solved the problem is I have a Freesat box that has a scart plug on back so my tv also has a scart so just put an old scart lead in and now working, also the blue ray player have bought an HDMI lead to Component lead yellow-red white,and for my games console bought a Wii to Composite lead .you can also get component to component and component to hdmi.this is the way if you dont want to take the tv apart.

    Cool thanks. My LG 42" HDMI ports packed up last night so im looking for solutions. Ive got an adapter with five ports for Virgin box,xbox, surround sound n a flat cable running under carpet to laptop next to sofa to stream movies etc. My TVs only 3yrs old cost £550 so not impressed,great picture tho. Il have to buy a hair dryer n see what happens or i could pour hot water on the chip but the result could come as a shock!!!

    On my LG LE 5500.. it is not the hdmi chip..( TDA19997HL ) but the processor with the big heatsink that have to be reballed.. but i -repaired- with a mechanical solution.. put something between backpanel and heatsink.. so that there is pressure on the heatsink. or a plastic screw.. so you can adjust..

    Yes, it works, but it last not too much, and nobody know it. The problem is the chip (IC) TDA19997HL/C1, and the best solution is changing it. it is not necessary to change the electronic board, just change the chip.

    I tried applying some solder paste to the microprocessor where the hdmi goes to and heated with a blowdrier. When I turned my TV on there was some smoking and the screen flicked, now I dont even have any image. What happened?

    • @WhatHappensWhen
      @WhatHappensWhen  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be worth getting some solder wick and removing the solder paste to see if you can get the screen working again. If you have a VGA port then you can get a HDMI to VGA converter and then you can connect up the HDMI equipment to the VGA port if the HDMI ports are dead.

    • @bikerides
      @bikerides 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      By applying solder paste you shorted out the connections and probably fried the chip. Not the heat that fried it but current through the short.
