He's being asked what he thinks about the nonviolence strategy. He says it was never something that the workers at SNCC actually believed in themselves but it was a political strategy. That was evident because he says almost all of them had armed themselves (privately). They hoped that when they were attacked in public despite being peaceful it would draw national attention to them.
