I collected chips for years growing up. I had people bring back chips when they went to vegas. I had over 80 chips from all the greats. I remember selling them in 1990 and people went nuts trying to buy them from me. I ended up selling all for $250. Today i would say easily $1000 plus
@8NewsNowVegas: Whoever prepared this story made an error in the report in this video. At the 1:47 mark your reporter pulled up an example of a $1 chip on eBay and said it was "listed for 27 times its value." However, your reporter failed to notice that the listing and shipping prices of that listing were in Canadian Dollars (hence the capital "C" in front of the dollar sign, the italicized numbers in the prices, and the "shipping from the United States" note). The prices translate to about $19.94 USD, and about $11.20 USD shipping. So your reporter should've reported that the $1 chip was being sold for "almost 20 times its face value."
I'm all my years I've never thought about keeping these. 😂 kinda wish i did now. First time ever going to a casino i was in the Bahamas at 18. First pull 125$off a quarter i think it was.😂
One local news station mentioned there were CATS living on the property and the employees were feeding them. Now the employees are trying to rescue them. Disgusting to know there were strays living on the property?
I mean unless you mean the recent movie release I am not seeing an issue. Why would stray cats be an issue on property? That is free external pest control!
I remember being in a las vegas hotel and this dumb bartender in monkey attire asking for my identification. I was not sitting anywhere near the bar and didn't ask for any drink, but he calls me over. The reason these places are closing is you don't show any respect. Be considerate of people and don't bother people relaxing on a couch not bothering or playing any of the games.
I have a collection of old casino chips, slot club cards, and even those $1 slot machine coins, before the machines no longer took coins. They may be worth something, but it won't make me rich.
I'm the dude ;) .. And naw, this news story helped make an incredible buzz of the Trop chips.. I've never seen a casino turn people away from buying chips before .. this was truly insane 🙃
@@woozy607 I mean... I literally just sold a stack of ten for $125. That is absolutely a record; usually it takes months after a hotel shuts down for the value to gain traction... and they're not blowing up the Trop until way later this year. My buddy just got back from a meeting there. He brought me a $5 chip and $1 chip. He said many tables were already closed down.

las vegas has the worst news anchors/ journalists
I thought it was Canada or china but yeah
why would there be a mandate to destroy remaining chips? I figured you could sell them as they have no value once the casino is no more.
people would gamble with them and they could claim it was just a game but the chips do have value so its not cool
I'm shocked that people are trying to get a souvenir.
The hotel next door? Oyo? Excalibur? New York New York? MGM Grand?
its oyo
Yeah the signs were all over Tropicana. You can redeem chips or vouchers @ Oyo
Duh....I have chips from the Riviera.
What did they think people were going to do?????
Circus circus next😂😂😂
Circus Circus shall live on forever.
@@VNeto94 branded under a new building and idea, I agree
I have chips from every casino I’ve gone too. Always been a good keepsake for me on my trips.
The Hotel Room Card Key is what really counts... It shows that you actually stayed there.
Not necessarily so how much money is it worth to prove you were there??
Both are neat little reminders of, hopefully, good times.
( psst: people can buy card keys as collector items too :p )
No one cares.
@@lobstertexas Yeah well, I stayed there
This is so sad. It’s such a great hotel too. I haven’t been there since 2012.
Really selling it on how good it was. So good you haven’t been there in 12 years
Lol😃🤣
Tropicana,
haven’t been there since about 1990.
Robert Urich used to park his car not too far from there.
That saves you losing your money by losing your money?
It gets some of your money back and is worth more than face value.
Well at lease you keep something at the end 😂

Interesting! That casino is complete trash these days
💥💥 i have a white dollar chip from the New Frontier.... autographed by Bob Stupak. That chip is priceless, since both are gone. 👍🚬🎰
meh i have chips from every casino in Vegas from the 1950s till current even 1970s tropicana.
Make more chips now.
I bet there wasn't a single chip for them to destroy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It got so ghetto there about 15 years ago. then they revamped it to make it nicer but by then the reputation of it being ghetto was too strong.
What made it so ghetto? I’m new to Vegas.

The usual suspects
And the chips are worth nothing to anyone since the Tropicana is gone.
The casino has to honor the face value of the chips & any old slot dollars for I believe 90 days then after that there just collectors items!
Howdy .. I'm the guy in the story... AMA 😇🤠

no. ebays fees only run about 10-15% depending on the type of item you are selling.

The reason Tropicana is closing is because they sold the property to the new baseball stadium.
You need to be 21 to hang out in the casino it had nothing to do with drinking grow up baby.

grabbing the chips and removing them from the hotel is like stealing lava rocks from hawaii. just saying....
Too many “stealing” of lava rocks affects nature. We don’t want to affect nature. Casinos created chips for sell. They sell we buy, transactions done.
Yup. You saw what happened on Brady Bunch when they stole lave rocks in Hawaii.
No that was the tiki god, and I have a lava rock from Hawaii in the '70s.
