I lost one of my best lecturer when I was in campus who had gone to do shopping but unfortunately he was shot while at Westgate......it was painful.

It is named after the then chairman of the Royal Geographic society, which had probably funded his expedition. The name of that landscape in Gikuyu is Nyandarwa. This important historical mountain from which the Mau Mau waged one of the most fiercest battles for independence is named after a dead white person. Lakes in Mt. Kenya ecosystem are named after white people. Across Africa this practice of giving African landscapes new white names has remained to date.
Lake Victoria.. and Victoria falls .named after queen Victoria. What has queen Victoria ever done for Africans other than preside over their death and destruction?
Giving new names to landscapes and animals is a way of reinforcing racist beliefs that Africans have no knowledge and they do not know how to manage their landscapes.
Current government's share this colonial racist logic for they have retained the names.

From my little knowledge, the KDF Red Beret team is called the Special Forces, an elite squad which was equally responsible for taking over Kismayu. The 2013 Westgate confusion between the Recce Company and Special Forces made President Uhuru to visit the Ruiru camp and condoled with the Recce officers. From the sad events, we now have a Special unit moving forward known as the SWAT Team, that will be responsible for such counter attacks. I however must say, even though the Special Forces from KDF are equally lethal, the example of Westgate was a Recce assignment as it is drawn from the GSU with the mandate internal matters.

Great work just a footnote there is a whole side of the story u omitted; the side of people who didn't commit those atrocities but had to live in fear their whole teenage years bcz they looked like the guy who committed the crime.
September 21st 2013 was a dark day... Nakumbuka my mum was to go to Westgate hii siku but akachange mind. A family friend was shot kwa mguu, she is traumatized to date.
