I own both axes and did the same comparison. I found that the GB chopped about 20% better than the Husqvarna. I used both to chop through a 10” log and was able to get through it with 70 swings of the GB while the Husqvarna took 90 swings. The Husqvarna bites about as deep on each swing but the GB removed bigger chips with each swing. I did find the Husqvarna handle to be more comfortable though. The GB handle was more fatiguing to my bottom hand and gave me blisters. I wasn’t wearing gloves but I will definitely wear them next time I use my GB.
The thicker handle and the odd shaping is an issue. But they can be fixed. You can always sand to thin out the handle and carve away the bulky knob at the bottom and make a smoother transition which is what's causing the blisters.
I have a hard time even using my Husqvarna, I don't want to scratch it up, so I'd never buy a Gransfors because it would just sit in the shed and only come out to show off when camping etc (which I think happens to most of them!).
Your getting good steel for half the price. Personally i'll put a little work into the Husqvarna make it just as fine an axe as the more expensive Granfors and save myself a bunch of money. But for those that don't have the skill to do the work they pay for their lack of knowledge.
I’m a welder. I know how to work on different type of steels. I bought two gransfors even if i like working on my tools. You can’t even think about comparing one to another. Do i care spending 100$ more for a tool that will last me a life time? I’m not that poor. 100$ is a good night at the bar lol
Of course the Gransfors is better. But more than double the price. The Husqvarna is still a very good axe for the price. The price / quality compromise is something every person needs to decide for themselves. I own a Gransfors small forest axe, and am now looking to buy a Husqvarna in the larger forest axe size. I think with a little work from me the quality will be much better.
One more thing, don't put your axe head in the snow before chopping. You should always warm up your blade first. In history books they mention, that fallers would warm their axe heads on their body skin in winter, to prevent the edge from chipping...
Yeah, it mentions this in the Gransfors Bruks "Axe Book" that comes with their axes. Doesn't have to be directly on your skin though. That's not going to feel very pleasant when it's below freezing Temps outside 😆 🥶 Just simply sticking the head inside your coat and under an armpit or side for a few minutes before working with it should do the trick.
Husqvarna outsourced their axes to Hultafors, and simply put their stamp on the head. You're getting a quality axe with the husky. I own two and would trust my life with them.
I have several smaller forest axes and the cheaper ones perform as well as the more expensive. The Husqvarna is just as good for the money as the expensive GransforsBruks. The only thing about an expensive axe is ......that it is expensive!
I watched so I could choose an axe for my use (also for my son). I think you're right, Simon, the GransforsBruks is a better axe. I appreciate you mentioned many good things about the Husqvarna axe as well. Good comparison test. Thank you.
Gransfors axes will have the handle stay on for 15 years, the Husky May have it stay on for 3 years. I prefer council tool or old axe heads over gransfors (from limited use). If you know what you’re doing you can make the husky a better axe by far than a gransfors, by default, Gransfors is much better and worth the price if you’re lazy
yeah . . . its not that great. . . . .aesthatically speaking .. . . but for general work its the way to go for sure . I use it all the time , and because its cheaper you can really have some fun with it , like a proper axe .
i see it like this, if you use the axe at least once a week go with bruks. if you're like me and need one once a month don't waste your money and take the husk. They are both good, so just down to cost.
Husqvarna has a better handle, better grain. If you shsped the head with a file, it's the same axe. You can buy 3 for the price of GB! And if you are going by a bit of curled grain by the head, you are mad. Same steel. Same company own GB, Hultafors, Hults Bruks, and Husqvarna. You just have to sharpen the Husqvarna yourself. They are tools to be used too many axes on TH-cam don't look like they have been used. You can sharpen the Husqvarna so it is the same has the GB. The grain orientation on the Husqvarna is superior!
and lastly, I don't think a comparison by striking has any meaning. More important are the things you mentioned before. Or e.g. how hard is the edge, so how long will the sharpness last...
Hi, nice review, there are two models on Gransfors website : the "Small Forest Axe" ( wich is 0,9 kgs head/ 49 cm long) and the "Scandinavian Forest Axe" ( 1,2 kgs/ 64cm long) On the other side on Husqvarna's website the "Forest- Multiporpose Axe" ( its 0,85 kgs head/ 68 cm long) Now, between video info and reading the numbers that i found on the internet,, i dont know wich ones you are using on the comparison, can anybody help? Thanks
I know this isn’t related to your video we talked about about coming here to Alaska. Your image or label I don’t know what to call it but the Star constellation on it what do you call it? I ask because that is are state flag in Alaska we call it the Big Dipper.
like you review! subscribed. yes, the husqvarna is much cheaper (and available), but i am troubled by reports of the husky's head cracking . no doubt any tool can fail though....
The only differences is the shape of the head. Same steel same company make them. Spend half hour on the cutting edge and flatten the top of the axe and they are the same. The husqvarna is exactly the same as hultafors/hults bruks!

Husqvarna does not manufacture axes - period. So, they have some other smithy contracted to do the work. You find better offers and quality from either one of the smithies that produced for them: Hultafors and Wetterlings. edit: just checked the Wetterlings Website and sadly, you can no longer purchase axes - only at the factory in Sweden directly. The owner of Gransfors Bruks bought Wetterlings a couple of years ago and I guess he decided it is not making enough money / are they still producing for Husqvarna? I guess, maybe for others too?

Imagine thinking, that because somebody wants to pay more for a superior steel/heat treat, they lack knowledge. Total ignorance.
@@pubplays368 20 year warranty on the GB compared to 90 days for the husq can really see who stands behind the longterm quality of their axe
@@Scouten819 You tagged the wrong person but good point.

Thanks for your job! I gonna buy Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian. Your video was useful for me.
Hultafors is very similar too, and very cheap. They just need a bit of love when you get them
The Hultafors is made at the same forge as Husqvarna, but has more care taken in the finishing.
Sweet axes! I have the Gransforbruk Forest axe and the small splitting axe and love them! Cheers!
Husqvarna outsourced their axes to Hultafors, and simply put their stamp on the head. You're getting a quality axe with the husky. I own two and would trust my life with them.
Thanks for the video.ive been researching these ax hatchets.so i think im going with gransfork bruk

very true my friend
thanks. I didn't wanna throw 165 for the gransfor but I wanted quality. good to know. I'm for sure going with Husqvarna.
You only say that becuase you cant afford a more expensive axe. Grännforsbruks axes have much higher quality steel and last much longer. Sorry
@@BackedByReason the gransfor people hate videos like this cause they make them realize just how much money they've thrown away.
@@sakariasolsson4813 How long do you need the steel to last tho? The steel on the husky will last my lifetime easy.
With those different hard profiles you would assume the Husky might split better. Which is also a core maybe more core use of an axe now days
What do you think guys? Is Gransfors' price reasonable?
Tell me what you think! Simon
13" Husqvarna

Thanks for the video.
Inconsistency on axe swing, part of the log had a knot for the Husqvarna. I say both are great axes and for the value and quality... Husqvarna wins.
I have 13 in Husqvarna 🇸🇪 and
20 in Helko Werk Rheinland pack axe 🇩🇪 👍
Great work on video mate greetings from spain
Money wise the husk is a better tool. My opinion.

I'll take your silence as testament. Giving away my CRKT chogan tomahawk. It's a toy. The gransfors is an excellent tool!
Don't cut up or level, cut at a angle. The saw does the 90° cut. You hit the tree differently .

That Husqvarna looks better finished than the gransfors
Have you or your friends tried out or had any experience with a tomahawk? If so, what did you think?
Bonjour So which one is the best ?
HA! You know the swedish makes the beast axes when the 2 top axes in the world are from swedes
True
Hults Bruk in Sweden makes very nice traditionally axes and other high quality tools. They invented the yardstick for example. Great Company
Can't really argue with that.
Husqvarna make brilliant chainsaws I have few ,but leave the axes to Gransfors Bruk

Hultafors makes husqvarna...
