      They are one of the most original bands out there but as Phil said we all have different tastes. I will say this about the Smiths. They are the most talented original band I am NOT into. I should like them but they are just too effeminate for my TASTE. I grew up in England and am allergic to English sentimentality and endless self pity and androgyny. I have had gay friends and even band members but as with Queen it is a sound I do not relate too. Back then I preferred Depeche Mode, the Psychedelic Furs, Japan, Pil and then the Stone Roses. Then came Slayer and I found a reason to love real Metal again after 10 years (ie Since Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffitti' the last of the great initial Metal era that started with I and Ozzy's Sabbath!

    Just when I thought Anselmo couldn't get much more awesome I find out he's a Smiths fan. I'm from Manchester and round here, they are so deeply ingrained in the local culture that its almost inescapable but in the best way possible. The Queen is Dead is one of my favourite albums of all time and I've always said that they have a lot in common with metal. My dad who's a huge Smiths fan but not the biggest fan of metal saw me watching an Iron Maiden show on the TV and asked "I don't see how you can like this and still say you like the smiths" But they both appeal to similar demographics: Outsiders. They both appeal to the weird, alienated kids who never fit in at school. And like a lot of my favourite metal bands, it doesn't matter how many times I listen to their music, it never for one second ceases to amaze me.

    • @77Creation
      @77Creation ปีที่แล้ว

      They both appeal to similar demographics: white, xenophobic bigots.
      Minorities are the definition of outsiders. And since we made being outsiders cool, now we can’t even have that.
      See Rock N Roll, Jazz, Disco, House and Techno for just the latest examples.

    "I think they're heavy in their own way", "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side, they could be singing about me" never paid attention to Pantera but this man is great. He totally got what The Smiths were about, give a voice to the voiceless, to the common people from all over the world that don't have a cheesy love story to share or a story about success to tell. The Smiths were at a time when people was singing shit like "Oh, living on a prayer" or "All we hear is Radio GaGa" or "You're in the jungle baby", and even the artists that tried to write something smart, something that "says something about our lives", like Moz would say, failed at connecting to the audience, like Overkill by Men at Work, or Senses Overworking by XTC. And failing at connecting to the audience doesn't make them bad, those are great tunes, but Morrissey truly knew how to say exactly what people were going through, and many times say something that makes people realise what they were going through. He's one of the few persons that can say "I know how you feel" and actually know how you feel. He was fascinated with the image of the popstar, that's why most of his stuff is like that, but then again, he ended up being probably the best popstar of all time. That's why The Smiths are great, leaving aside the music, which combined with the lyrics makes them one of the greatest of all time.
    Also love his voice when he quotes their songs, this man is charming (yes, I pun intended)

    The Smiths are my favourite band first equal with The Beatles. Glad to see that Phil Anselmo 'gets it' especially re Morrissey's humour. I'm from Manchester, so the Smiths are incredibly meaningful to me, as I see what Morrissey was writing about, every day. I've found that a lot of heavier music is influenced by the Smiths. Dave Verellen of Botch/Narrows is a Smiths/Morrissey fan, too! Maybe it's exactly what Phil Anselmo says in this clip - the Smiths were brutally honest in everything they did. The lyrics blatantly showed the darker side of life, and the music was stark and bold. Both of these traits are the basics of heavier music.

    Metal heads are going to explode! First Charlie Benante comes out as a fan of Nirvana's music on an episode of Amoeba's "What's In My Bag?" and now Phil Anselmo, formerly of Pantera, is publicly coming out as a fan of The Smiths and Morrisey. I absolutely love that Metal musicians are opening up and showing that they are not just Metal heads like their fans! Love all forms of music, or at least appreciate what they have to offer--especially the really good stuff--because that is what is important. Shitting on other forms of music is just pretentious bullshit with a very narrow view. It is insane ridiculousness to act as though Heavy Metal, Jazz, Punk Rock, or whatever it is you listen to is the only good music around. Like what you want, and if you don't like something don't listen to it, but stop the dumping on other forms of music because your opinions are pure shit when you say a genre is so terrible that it should be wiped from the face of the Earth. If you don't like a particular artist in that genre, that's understandable, but to say a whole genre is worthless--that to me is pretentious bullshit.

    • @HitmanJenkins1

      There are plenty of Metal musicians who listen to loads if different kinds of music, Chuck Schuldiner was famous for saying he listened to pretty much everything bar Rap and Country, Dave Mustaine is an Al Green fan, Jeff Hanneman loved Hardcore music, Napalm Death apparently gave Cocteau Twins a heads up in some liner notes for one of their albums, the list goes on and on. If you stick to one genre then you miss out on a lot of great stuff and if you're a musician, you can't grow and develop as much.

    • @DoppelgangerShockwave
      @DoppelgangerShockwave 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anth150 But that makes you an exception. Most metal-heads hate Nirvana. They accuse them of killing Hair Metal and denying Thrash Metal its right to reign supreme in the early 90s. It's all bullshit, but a lot of Metal purists feel that way. Most Metal musicians didn't feel that way, especially those in Thrash Metal. Thrash Metal musicians hated the Hair Metal bands who reigned supreme on MTV in the 1980s. So when Nirvana and the Alternative Rock seen came to prominence most Thrash Metal musicians were enthralled, but not the fans.

I don't know why people would complain about Grunge killing Hair Metal, it ran it's course and had more bad bands than good ones. Grunge was also a genre that combined Metal with Punk if you looked at the broader picture, especially with bands like Melvins and Tad, seeing as Thrash is also a combination of Metal and Punk it baffles me as to why the fans would write off that scene and claim that it killed all Metal.

    Good music is good music regardless of genre. I came out of the womb hearing my mom play The Smiths, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cranberries, Sex Pistols, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bauhaus, The Church, etc.
    My teenage cousins got me into metal when I was a toddler. So lucky my family had good taste in music.

    Genius, is genius. It comes in many forms lyrically and instrumentally. You can judge the quality of an artist, by the multitude of genres that have influenced them, and whom they've influenced in return. Rap, Metal, Pop,Rock, Indie,etc. artists from all of those genres have listed The Smiths and/or Morrissey as an influence. Love or hate an artist, you should acknowledge the quality of the mark that they leave, by whom they've influenced and how relevant they stay as time goes by. The Smiths, disbanded more than 25 years ago, and they still get the cover of magazines pretty regularly. Morrissey, didn't even have a label until recently, and he went without one for YEARS!! Despite that, he sells out every single appearance he makes within hours, and sometimes minutes. That's a mark of success and longevity. You can't buy that, but you sure as hell earn it and it speaks volumes.

    Tons of respect to the man. He has no fear at all to show the passion and love he have for one of the most incredible bands of all the time like The Smiths are. Metalheads always have good taste on music watching technics and musical skills on musicians. Its a fact, all the metalheads has been listen at least once classical music or Vivaldi and stuff like that. Anyway, the thing is I respect a lot Phillip Anselmo as the lead singer of Pantera, Down, Superjoint and many other proyects but I respect him more for his musical taste.

    "Bigmouth Strikes Again" is my favorite Smiths songs, but their whole discography is special. I love everything from Punk to Metal, Power Pop to PROG, but in the 80's, it was the first handful of albums by REM and The Smiths that were on permanent rotation on my turntable, and more importantly, those two bands turned me on to other great music at the time...
    Speaking of REM, I heard that Metallica bassist Cliff Burton turned the rest of the band onto bandsi like REM and The Velvet Underground. What a cool guy with eclectic taste...

      +Aaron Morris : I'm with Phil on that one. Octopuses Garden is horrendous as is Yellow Submarine and all the other 'shroom/LSD' influenced crap the Beatles did (Except for Strawberry Fields and 'A Day In The Life.') Just my opinion. Also can't stand their piano based songs like 'Let It Be' and 'Hey Jude'; but hey, I'm usually looked upon as a weirdo for such opinions.
