Are smoothing groups basically another way of editing the direction of normals? I use them to achieve a similar effect in my models, so they dont look incredibly hard edged. I read up on normals a while back too, so I knew in very basic terms what they were about, but not how to edit or play with them. For the pyramid type object, I would add it to the same group as the plane, but I dont think this would work on the vertical plane. Hopefully UDK supports this!
I tried to use edited vertex normals in Cryengine2 a while back, specifically for a wheat field, but also something similar on trees for the foliage, but the damn thing.. it won't use/ export custom edited vertex normals, *sadface*
