Abandoned Mill, Mine and Trailer

Back in February, my friend Jessica and I explored an abandoned mining camp WAY out in the mountains of central Nevada...and when I posted the video, a viewer informed me that I had somehow missed an entire adjacent mill site! So I went back with my friend Larry, aka Eminence FrontX5, to check it out. WOW! This was one of the creepiest, most fascinating sites I've ever explored. In addition to extensive mill ruins, we also explore some old mining adits...and a VERY creepy and somewhat sad abandoned trailer. Who lived here? And what were their lives like, way out here in the desolate hinterlands of central Nevada? Not much is left to tell the tale...but just enough remains to paint a very haunting picture.

Deserted places like that are getting harder and harder to find that are not stripped of everything of scrap value. Thank ya for not giving out the locations of most of the places you go. I have been to the place you videoed in this episode.
What you called old machinery is a mine hoist and the building was called the hoist house. A hoist man would operate it to lower the miners and equipment down the shaft and raise the ore and miners out of the shaft. When you look around the hoist house always look for the bell code sign as they are relics. The bell code was the method the miners used to inform the hoistman to raise or lowed the skip. They ran a wire cable down the shaft to a electrical knocker on the collar of the shaft. In the hoist-house was a knocker infoming the hoistman what to do. Example 3-1 hoist men 1-2 mine collar. The miner would ring 3-1/ 1-2.
Many years ago I visited Riley's Camp While he was still alive. While there, I went into a mine but didn't have a flashlight. So I walked backwards so I could use the light from the entrance to sort of see. It got too dark so I came back out and old Bill Riley said: your lucky your still here! He took me back to the mine with a flashlight and we followed my foot prints into the mine. They stopped about 3 feet from a vertical drop (about 100 feet) that wasn't covered. Bill was right. I'm lucky to be here. Unfortunately, that's not the stupidest thing I've done in my 67 years.....more on that later.

There's a story about a mine worker from the Mount Baker mining district, where someone had filled a quart jar with some of the water out of a pipe like that and left it sitting on some stairs. Another worker came along on the hot day and was very thirsty so he drank the jar of water. He felt all right and didn't notice any ill effects later, but discovered it was water with mercury in it.

Yes I agree that cyanide may have been used in the mill. But most flotation cells are used to separate sulfide minerals the concentrates then can be transferred to a shaker table. Cyanide usually is added to the gold and sliver solution in tanks then zinc is added to capture the precipitates and filtered out in the filter system. Also it looks like there’s a mercury retort whatever they were mining it must have been a complex ore. I worked in the mining industry for over 30 years (Nevada, Alaska, Utah, Montana and Washington). I mined gold, silver, lead copper, iron and tungsten ores.

Excellent place! My first thoughts when I visit these abandoned places is how long the place has been deserted. So the goal is always to find a date on something and you were able to find all kinds of stuff to help solve the time period mystery here. Well done! Definitely last occupied most likely around late 1970's. The stove in the trailer was definitely from either the late 1950's or early 1960's. The rusted Dr Pepper soda can was mid 1970's (I'm an old soda memorabilia collector).

Truly great Explore, what an amazing array of sights to see and we'll filmed. So many things stay better preserved there, I wish our places here were as mold free.
Olights are great. They have the Baton 3 now that comes with its own recharging case. Just a word of caution from an old miner. Abandoned mines can cave in just from vibrations of walking or speaking. Consequently, pockets of deadly air and gases can be present. Even experienced cavers can die exploring mines, due to lack of oxygen.

If you don't already, you should google earth the sites you visit and switch to satellite mode then you can search surrounding area for additional ruins. For instance at this site there is some ruins or pipe up the wash a bit, just northeast of the winch house and water tank

That first mine you looked into - it was good that it is closed. Did you notice how the roof support beams were bowing down? That isn't going to hold much longer.

I did a search with George M Wood, Goldfield, Nevada and could not find anything. Perhaps a deceased person now. By the way, you are quite brave. One day, I considered going to explore my grandmoms childhood home before it is torn down. However, I ended up feeling like I should probably not go further in than outside at the front door. Someone had told me that very old, abandoned wooden houses are "like burnt" from the inside. That sounded like black mold to me and some people say black mold can actually kill you. Another reason that encouraged me to abort that urbex trip short of entering the house was because I saw a bottle at the front door. I did not know was the bottle abandoned or was it a sign than someone was squatting inside. Stay safe, Sarah, because there may be anything out there.
I have watched all the episodes and what a fantastic job u have done. Always been my dream to do what u r doing when I was younger. Now I could do it but not young any more lol. Keep on enjoying what u do for those of us that cant!!! Question.....what would people use for wood out there in the desert for fire pits???? Being cold at night they had to have fires and I'm sure they couldn't afford to truck firewood in all the time. Just curious. If I was there i would be checking out rocks and crystals especially around the lava tubes lol!!!! What fun!!

toxic smell near and around that Case engine...you may have been getting a whiff of old, stale varnished gasoline. That stuff goes bad after a while...and smells like it too. Well...it
starts smelling like varnish or lacquer...and leaves a film behind like varnish.

Some one snitched the Starter and Magneto off that beautiful Case Stationary Engine. Froth Paddles, something to do with Cyanide? My Mom had Paisley chairs like those, same color. Nice Video, Thanks.
Liking old engines too Jim Key, that was the first thing I noticed.
The froth paddles usually are used with flotation cells with a chemical called xanthate. Xanthate forms bubbles attached to sulfide minerals like silver lead etc. The froth paddle skim off the bubbles attached to the mineral other chemicals are like silicon are used to depress the waste materials to the bottom of the cell. I really don’t think they used cyanide as they would use activate carbon or zinc to capture the cyanide.

@@wendydillon7174 The froth then goes through those Rotary Filters seen previously. Gold is also precipitated this way and cyanide was involved in that operation.

At 8:33 that engine looks like maybe it's a 50kw generator. Probably used to run basic operations and lighting should the power go out.

Looks like the mine was worked until the 1980s, ought to have information on it at the State Regsitry of Mines. amazing how in such a arid area, there are still springs and water holes.

I wonder what that furnace heated up? To small for smelting nor configured like a smelter. That trailer looked like somebody wanted to sleep out of earshot of the mill.
I always get claustrophobic when you go into mines, that first tunnel Larry went down was just a series of cave ins. Not safe at all.
With how cold it gets up there I was thinking they were heating water to keep from freezing during winter.
