I grew up outside of Syracuse, Auburn was a nearby city. Fascinating to know that something manufactured in Auburn made it out to remote Paoha Island in Mono Lake. Too cool!
Long before the TB resort, there were some families that farmed on the island. Crazy! The resort was built in the early 30's, so that dozer fits in to the time period. Indeed that is a fresh water spring and the reason why people farmed there and built the "Spa". Apparently there are some deer on the island. Thanks for the tour!
Also mono lake is where the movie 'High Plains Drifter' was filmed and also where the photo of the man diving into the water from 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd was taken.
Thanks. I was gonna mention the Pink Floyd connection, didn't know about the Eastwood one. Very cool. Watching how salty that water was made me think of the poor guy who posed for Wish You Were Here. There was no photo trickery. He had to hold his breath balanced on a chair and pose with his bottom half above the water until the surface of the water was perfectly smooth. Oy.

The tractor Cletrac; is pronounced Cleet Track very deirable for a restoration project, depending on condition, of course. It make me happy to see one i the wild. The were used extensively in Sugar Cane production in Southern Florida.
Cleveland motor company, started in 1916. With 6 million in capitol. By founder of white motor company. ( white semi truck's ) renamed Cleveland tractor company in 1917. 40,000 tractors sold. They played a big part in WW2. Sold to Oliver. Tractor company In 1944. It was renamed cletrac I in 1959. Closed In 1961.

Paoha Island is a volcanic island in Mono Lake. Only about 350 years ago, before the mid-17th century, the present-day Paoha Island did not exist. Volcanic eruptions on the lakebed gave rise to the island, which eventually rose to 6,670 feet (2,030 m) above sea level, 290 feet (88 m) above the present-day elevation of Mono Lake. The pale color of the island is attributed to lakebed sediments rising above the lake surface along with the volcanic material. The island has been tilled for alfalfa crops; a rabbit-and-chicken farmer once set up shop, and the island was also inhabited by a family who ran a health resort and raised goats for milk and yogurt.

Mono Cone ! All right! There is actually a fresh water stream on the island. If you paddle clockwise around Paoha from where you landed you’ll find it. The fresh water looks like oil entering the Alkali because of its specific gravity difference
I have a little familiarity with TB sanitoria. Those buildings were solaria, used to give solar treatments to patients. From the looks of them, there was a retractable shutter on the roof that could be rolled back fill the room with sunlight, considered to be beneficial for tuberculosis patients, along with the high desert air. (Incidentally, I liked Mark Twain's account of the mangy dog that tried to swim in the lake...a short-lived adventure due to salt water hitting the poor pooch's skin sores.)

There used to be a creepy old motel of cabins in Lee Vining, I recall staying there one time and the guy in the office was like the elder John Carradine actor, thin and gaunt. He scared the crap out of me. It was a sorta cool place though simple cozy and cheap. The Tioga pass road is awesome too. I love your adventures, you find the best sites and give a fun commentary always. I'll be sure to try the burger joint next time I pass through.

But I do recognize that old piece of farming equipment at 8:18 from a clip in the film the Mono Lake committee made in the mid ‘80’s called Of Ice and Fire, A Portrait of the Mono Basin. If you haven’t seen it you gotta check it out.
I kayaked at Lake Tahoe this morning for 5-hours, but it wasn't as exciting as your trip. I'm old enough to be your grandfather, so I feel I can ask this question. When is the last time you had a tetanus shot? I see all the rusted steel you walk over. I put all my shots on the US Department of Health & Human Services form, PHS-731. A tetanus shot is $70 at the local pharmacy. :)
I've looked at Google Map and compared to when I was there in 84. The water appears higher because we used to be able to walk up to the towers. The water was much farther away. Glad to see it higher. Thanks for the memories. Sanatorium structure makes sense. An arch is the strongest kind of roof. The ridge around it creates a kind of eve drip edge for when it does finally rain. Great discourse of imagination tho.
You should read "Roughing It" by Mark Twain, it's his first hand account of his arrival in the West and his various adventures, including the island trip by rowboat.
Must be quite a few collapsed huts overrun with those bushes. These places always make me want a time machine to see the place when it was brand spanking new.

Sanatoriums were common place after WW1&2 as Tuberculosis is very contagious. The one I knew of in London ON was known as the 'San'. Huge 3 story building with high fences. That green coil of wire was likely copper (green patina) and is what telephone lines were made of back in the day supported on poles. That first piece of equipment is a type of plow that had opposed moleboards/moldboards and was likely pulled by the Clettrack dozer to make ditches for irrigation or planting. Porcelain coated cast iron sink is from 30's-40's. Very interesting and you must have gotten lots of ouchies from those thorns. Tough and Rough yet beautiful. Just like You.

From what I have been able to dig up the TB Sanitorium was a pretty big place. It's obvious now that it was demolished. Other old clinics are still standing from even earlier than the 1930's that were just left to fall down. Interesting though. I love Urban Exploration.

When I was young I lived in the SF Bay Area Daly City, then I was went to Germany where if you did go to Heidelberg HS, you & I were academic enemies because I went to Mannheim. I lived in Worms at the time, but very proud of The Purple & Gold. Then guess what, I lived in Vegas where I attended UNLV. Wow what a coincidence !!! SF in the late 70s, Germany from 80 to 86, then Vegas in the early to mid 90s. I was born in Honolulu but raised on Maui! Now, isn't that just crazy or what...!

I've stayed at the Clown Motel when I was working as a traveling musician in the late '90s. I played two weeks at the Banc Club in Tonopah. Why people go nuts over the Clown Motel it is beyond me. The only place that was interesting is the lobby where the owners house a shitload of dusty, old clown nicknacks. The old low class but clean rooms had cheap replica paintings of a clowns in them. Whoopie-friggin'-doo.

Sometimes it took some years to get a patent and so some of the productions of things happens before a patent date. The manufacturers were confident they wouldn't be copied because they'd already applied for the patent.

From where you at Mono sometime instead of taking 395 back down to Bishop, instead take Hiway 120 down the mountain coming out in an old Indian town Benton......super cool hiway with hardly any traffic. Once you hit Hiway 6 you turn right and drive about 40 mins into Bishop.
When I was young I carried a Church Key for beer and soft drink cans. Pull Tabs were the demise of the Church Key, but I still have one in my car and kitchen.

Ha ha ha! Wonderhussy almost always under dresses, which makes for some of her adventures to be a lot more challenging for her to keep from being injured, be it minor or severe. Sometimes the girl scares me especially when she's wearing flip flops when she should be in a protective boot.

William West Often the seats of equipment back in the day will have logos stamped on them. Plow is probably from the 20's. Dunno on tractor thingy.
It's a horse drawn plow, 2 bottom, the yellow paint on the wheels tells me it's a Deere. The tractor was easy, i'm in the heavy equipment business.

He is correct. At 68 and a former Navy Corpsman, you would be wise to have the preventive shots and carry a record.

That round roof room was a quintisencial treatment room in the days of the sanatorium movement. Bed rest, fresh air and sunshine, rest and relaxation.

From where you at Mono sometime instead of taking 395 back down to Bishop, instead take Hiway 120 down the mountain coming out in an old Indian town Benton......super cool hiway with hardly any traffic. Once you hit Hiway 6 you turn right and drive about 40 mins into Bishop.
When I was young I carried a Church Key for beer and soft drink cans. Pull Tabs were the demise of the Church Key, but I still have one in my car and kitchen.

Ha ha ha! Wonderhussy almost always under dresses, which makes for some of her adventures to be a lot more challenging for her to keep from being injured, be it minor or severe. Sometimes the girl scares me especially when she's wearing flip flops when she should be in a protective boot.
The 1 shot was probably an oiler to lubricate the valves. Pump once every so often to keep it lubricated. You can see the valves on top of the engine.

This particular little Cletrac was probably a early to mid 1920’s model...
