Fox and Specialized will no longer fix or rebuild these shocks. If you buy an old Specialized with a Brain shock be prepared to spend $350+ to have Traxxion or Risse Racing rebuild it.Keep in mind you are supposed to service Brain shock air cans every 100 hours of riding but you cannot service them yourself like you can a standard shock. The local dealers also cannot service them. Its very disappointing that Specialized leaves you and your dealer high and dry when they sell you their proprietary product. Best option is to buy a Bikeyoke and a standard size shock (usually 190x45) BUT that will still cost you $350+ too.
I have a 2008 Epic and I still ride it all the time, it's an awesome bike. I keep it very sensitive and plush on the brain setting and I put a 2013 fox float 120 fork on it. It is still very efficient pedaling, accelerates very quickly, climbs great, handles great and it feels like a dream on the rough stuff.
Small bump sensitivity is that a way of saying you heard everybody complaining about how rough the bike road and then decided to improve it. I’ve got one of those older frames as soon as the new technology came out I was actually quite pissed off because now I have a bike that everybody admits is difficult to ride.
This is due to not having the knob on all the way to the hard position. You can adjust the brain to be able to compress or not which is the beauty behind this technology.
Being a Specialized Epic Expert owner I can say that I could give a rat's ass what the bike looks like when it preforms the way these bikes do. Make sure that you have the control on hard to see how the brain really works. The brain is both on the rear and front suspension.
Imo some of the crappiest feeing suspension ever made. Just terrible on bumpy cambered trails. Found myself off the trail several times from the fork “thinking” too much 😂. Thank god for the pike/debonair! Still love my 11’ sworks with the new sus... 🍻
The 2017 Specialized front fork system is pure crap, my new Crosstrail bike is lovely well that is except for the smart brain fork, completely useless. I hate the fork that much I had it replaced with a 700c Rockshox Paragon fork. Very disappointing when you buy a new bike based on the smart brain fork and the 2 x 10 gearing and then you find the fork is no farking good.

Most models have it only in the rear...S-Works, marathon, and expert have in front as well

awesome technology innovation.. like we in Indonesia say : Mantaaap.... Gowess teruss bro... !
You can if you adjust the knob to soft.
so the brain is for both front and rear?
great video
2:08 specialized ball scratching technology
is the brain only for rear suspension?
No

i like that bike
Yes you can :) Just set it to soft and my epic hopes very nice
This will look like the most out-dated technology that exists once the dampening is done electronically... oh, wait a minute...
watch 1:29, as he pedals his front suspension compresses.
i just found out that it is
why won't my wife listen????
Shouldn't need all this tech if you have a good frame design in the first place. Like my Santa Cruz carbon Blur XC. :)
@notbendable my wife

Yeah, great technology, but 2012's Specialized Bikes (compared to 2011 ones) are ugly as f*ck, so I'm getting a Trek Remedy in a few days! =/
