Connecting an LED light to AC voltage: A step-by-step tutorial"
"How to safely wire an LED light to 100V/220V AC power supply
That resistor is about to emit more light than the led if you keep it plugged in for too long.

-he must use a bigger resistor to handle the loss wattage

Not only that I think he should have used a

Beginner electronics enthusiasts, do not mess with mains
Amen 😂😂
I will take that advice. Thank you.
You put about 8 Watt in a 0.5 Watt Resistor? Will get very hot and burn out fast.
his ac outlet must have been 110v,
that will draw ~ .8watts/2 , the circuit only operating at a 1/2 cycle.
I thought those types of plugs carry 220-240 volts
@rudie2902, how did you get 8 watts.
P=U²/R.
If U=220 V (ex - USSR countries), P=3,23 Watts, but taking into account one half-wave out of two, half as much - 1.6 watts.
Else if U=110 Volts (USA), U²/R= 0.8, and half=0.4 Watts.
Or not?
Then we need POWER RESISTORS
If you add only 100kohm resistor in series it will work too. I have something like that done 30 years ago and it's still working
Done the same, but I had used a.22/250v cap in series. But the resistor heats up although not too much...
With modern LEDs you need a reverse blocking diode.
It will work... for a short time. If you will make it, your resistor should be able to handle more power than the resistor shown in this video.
Moreover, a lot of electric power lost in heat...
Our line voltage is 220v. When the neon lamp in my electric iron stopped working I replaced it with 2 LEDs. No diode, no capacitor. Just a resistor and 2 LEDs back to back. The resistor was in megaohms I think.
I calculated the resistor wattage of the given circuit. It is only 0.4W. If you want to reduce the wattage increase the resistance.
@flamingo5900
It would indeed work when you use a resistor in the mega ohms. But this person only used 15k. I think the led is 12V best case. This makes the voltage over the resistor 220 - 12 = 108V. Ohms law tells us that 108/15000 = 0.0072A trough the resstor. 0.0072 * 208 = 1.5W. only half of the time on and a lot of that time not 220V but less so lets divide by 3, gives us 0.5W. The resistor seems to be only 0.25W. This was my calculation. What was yours?
Capacitor.... 3sec. later BOOM 💥🤣

Wrong. The voltage on the capacitor will not be more than the forward baising voltage of the LED.
@@flamingo5900 uh..yeah sorry I’m wrong see the scheme

Capacitive dropper should be the answer, that's like 80% efficient or so. This circuit is more like 5% efficient, if you're lucky
Instead of the 15K resistor, use a 220nF 400V non-polar capacitor. It will drop the same voltage but dissipate no power so won't get hot. You also don't need the 1n4007, the LED will block the negative half waves of only a few volts without any problem.
Or you may solder two LEDs in parallel, but in opposite direction. And get twice the lumen power... :)
Resistor at this time:
🎵 Something fire🎵
Why?
You have good sense of humor and knowledge too
Power on resistor is about 48 watt. It if in socket you have 120 volts. Resistor is on 0.125 watts. It Just burns.
@@StepaSnail please explain it!
@@oberst_krass If the socket is 220 V, and the resistor is 15 kOhm, then the current will be 15 mA, which is good for the LED. But at this current, 3.3 watts will be released on the resistor. Within a minute, the resistor will get very hot and burn or melt everything around. Therefore, the resistor must be large in power and, again, we risk melting the case, i.e. should be concerned with heat dissipation. If you do not change the circuit, then it is more correct to take a 100 KΩ resistor. True, the current will drop to 2 mA.
These videos are made by people who didn't study well in school!!!
Bravissimo, ottima idea! ❤❤
Sorry. But the design of this is pretty aweful. Firstly you're dissipating more power than the small 1/4w resistor can handle.
Then the capacitor is only rated for 35v, meaning that if the LED fails and goes open circuit, it will burst.
A more efficient approach would be to use a capacitive dropper followed by a bridge rectifier.

I did it without a diode. The LED is designed for 200V reverse voltage. LED usually punches quickly.
Reverse voltage withstand is only a few volts for LEDs - check the data-sheets. The 1N4007 or similar is essential if you want the LED to last more than a few seconds.

Sie haben das absolut korrekt beschrieben ! Danke
Verlustleistung in Wärme P = U * I

relies on the diode to rectify half the AC. Then creates a voltage divider between the LED and resistor, to put most of the remaining 50/60 volts on the resistor and only 5 v on the led. The cap is a dampener to smooth out the half wave peaks. This is Very dangerous. LED's tend to malfunction on the sort circuit mode, not the open circuit mode. Capacitors also degrade/fail into the short circuit mode. You would think that if the LED fails in short mode the resistor will just burn open. or if the cap fails and shorts it will just pop. But that is not true. Both these devices have something called smart short mode. If they happen to fail that way you have a real nice piece of plastic housing to start a fire.
I believe it might need a rectifier
That is a *terrible* way to run an LED from the mains.
What you need is a low value / high voltage capacitor X2 rated, around 330nF should do the trick and a resistor of around 100-200 ohms. These three components are wired in series. Then a SSR diode (or another LED if you prefer) is wired anti-parallel across the LED.
The capacitor acts as a "wattless resistor", dropping the AC voltage. The resistor stops excessive "LED zapping" currents flowing during switch-on and during weird transient events while it's operating. The reversed diode allows the other cycle to flow, otherwise the circuit will stop once the cap is charged. It also guarantees that the reverse voltage across the LED is low.
Bagaimana kalau resistor dengan 220k/330k .? 🙏🏽
