This video is perfect, organized in a structure of "intro-pieces- how it works-assembly-demostration" under 3 minutes.
At the begining I thought "maybe she just combined the c64 and a bass and thats it, no electronics" but it surprised me as she actually uses the sound chip of the c64 and the buttons!
This was a joy to watch and I don't know how I didn't watched it sooner.

So weird how TH-cam picks an OLD video to favor, then puts it in everyone's recommendations. Sort these comments by "newest first" and look at the time stamps. One after another very recent. A blessing if you're the one favored, but given how many TH-camrs get the opposite treatment (vids intentionally removed in recommendations, vids demonitzed for no reason, etc), it's just another annoying thing YT does

Fooking awesome! I loved every second of this. I am also a EE, a musical equipment designer, and a bassist. I think your string tracking might be off as you are using piezos under the string at the bridge. That whole bridge is resonating so not the best way to isolate strings. Your comparator is acting like a noise gate so I could see that you are opening the gate more than one string at a time. You might try winding a small version of a pickup for each string. Like copper wire around a nail (with a magnet) might even work. You don't need a bunch of output as you are amplifying it. Like a Strat pickup has 7200 turns of wire - but they are trying to get that output up to a volt and they are dealing with tone. You are using this as a trigger so just 100 turns might work. Or you might even try a hall-effect sensor. A 3503 is about the width of your E string so the string isolation would be much better. May the fourths be with you! ;-)

Awesome!!! Can you explain how you are converting the sound of the strings and sending it to the audio chip? Are you detecting the frequency with the help of the FPGA? Is it polyphonic?
    Thanks a lot!

Did you do the FPGA programming too? Interfacing with the sound chip in the C64 sounds non-trivial.

If you consider that she's done a complete implementation of the C64 in FPGA... it probably wasn't that hard.

Well, the input (string vibration) and low-pass filter are obviously analog, but you're generating digital commands to send to a computer chip - the SID - which generates waveforms digitally, but outputs analog signals directly.

My thesis in 1986 at U of Manitoba was a MIDI guitar synthesizer. Used a Motorola chip and did the machine code. Wire-wrapped everything. Got into construction with Honeywell after graduation and then went on my own in 1991. Became a wealthy Apartment Developer. Just did was I was good at. You did a great job on the guitar. Way better than I could do. ve4mm
