Grew up on them and I'm from suburban middle class Australia. 8Ball and MJG are so special. 8Ball's solo double album Lost, is still a criminally underrated classic. Still bump them to this day. Would never have known about the historic community of Orange Mound and its rich history not just in Memphis, but the USA as a whole without them.
They way I see it, Eightball and MJG were regional artists. Those two did not care about mainstream recognition or gaining white fans. They knew who they made their music for. Signing with Bad Boy did them in. The shiny suit gloss was not for them.
The album on Bad Boy wasn’t shiny suit album lol. It was still gutta, it just didn’t have T-Mix on there. I’m grateful that they didn’t suffer any label issues which could have shelved their album. They left Suave House due to label issues. Tony Draper shouldn’t have signed that distribution deal with JCOR records either. Suave House could have signed a distribution deal with Koch or something
As a southerner and hip hop historian, I was a lil skeptical about watching this at first but I gotta say you were pretty much spot on in your analysis. Ball & MJG were never concerned with being mainstream, but to us here in the south they'll always be platinum plus legends. Great video
I'm glad they didn't blow up mainstream or we wouldn't have gotten so many classic songs and albums. They are southern legends with LONGEVITY and still making music today.
What impressed me about 8Ball & MJG was how they were able to go Gold just within their own region alone.
