This was also back when freestyle riders actually knew how to ride a bike. The reason the era of Travis, Nate, Kenny, Brian, Mike Metzger, and most every other freestyler from the late 90s and early 2000s was so fun to watch is because they knew how to ride a bike. They raced for years before they did freestyle, because up to that point FMX wasn’t really a thing, so they knew all the fundamentals of riding. Now guys in the X Fighters or whatever know cool tricks and stuff, but you aren’t going to see them racing the course like this, because they don’t really know how.
@@racingfuel28 this is not true at all😭 no one puts their kid on a dirtbike and says go do tricks before you know how to ride. everyone learns fundamentals while riding and still to this day people don’t immediately set their sights on freestyle, not to mention the fact that the trucks being thrown now require focus and perfection on every takeoff so it’s not really reasonable to be railing around the whole area
It was to his benefit, the faster you get through those turns, the more tricks you can do, which improves your score. Genius to do it that way. Nyjah Huston does this in his competitions, get in as many tricks as you can, spend as little time not doing tricks as possible.
Exactly! Far more style and fun to watch. BMX freestyle is experiencing this same thing, but for us it's tailwhips/barspins. Personally I'd love to see contests based on trick variety, amplitude and style. More beautiful/flowing/stylish runs adding a lot to overall score
@@kyleheaser351boombaby ye exactly same with dirt jump and freeride mountain biking, they all pushing them self to the limits but no more style, its just about doing a 3 whip flip, cashroll or whatever rotation trick it is
Man I love watching this guy ride never stops and always goes full throttle and pushes it to the limits. And definitely glad he is still here with us today he is a true down to earth guy I got the chance to meet and hang with him in Cleveland at the gravity games. Dude is my favorite extreme games athlete of all time. Much love from Ohio Travis stay blessed, safe, and healthy
Man the old school freestyle we all knew and loved still gives chills so many years later. And espn though freestyle would die off after a few years thank god for X GAMES BABY
Travis's mom so nervous she cannot look ? If she only knew where it was gonna go. I was on this then and at the Philly games in 02'. Was trying to do it myself in spare time but the progression was insane. Then so many times thinking it just cannot go any further and it still does.
Not exactly like that in a contest, but I've seen a few insanely crazy no hander landers far beyond this in danger level/skill level. This was rad, and honestly just looked great, but there are people doing stupidly dangerous no hander lander variations in and out of contests
Wow! my uncle brought this VHS when he was working in the USA in the late 90s and early 2000s, if I'm not mistaken there was another one documenting Pastrana's life, or if it was this one, I don't remember it well...
I'd argue also bring back non-flip maneuver contests. Less dangerous, more style, wider variety of tricks. This was simply more fun to watch than modern contests. Too many flips in my opinion. Or at least a limit to the amount of flips. Loved this.
@@kyleheaser351boombaby I think limit flips would be the go. I remember as a kid when new upright tricks came out it was awesome! You had to buy a magazine or vhs/DVD to find out what riders were up too. Glory days
They should reboot gravity games but on the moon. Build stadiums on the moon for skate and BMX and space suit electric dirtbikes fmx free ride jump over moon craters with moon gravity and call it gravity games. must watch tv

Man I miss the days of no flips and courses that had more than 2 stupid ass flip ramps. Freestyle is so boring now. Oh look, oh look another flip, oh another flip. I wish they’d go back to runs like this
Keep in mind that Travis also invented over half of the tricks in this run, at 15. What a legend
Which ones?
@@oh_look_bananas also a freddy murcury fan
Also the fastest rider ever to race in the AMA
@@oh_look_bananas I think the lazy boy, maybe the nac nac, to name a couple
Nac Nac was invented by Jeremy McGrath.
So nice to see a run without stopping every two seconds to lift flip levers or tighten steering dampers
Hahaha so true

@Ben Coker so true they were all so quick around the course. I get bored after 1 or two runs now. Where as then i could watch it over and over
yeah, and the turns. i have not seen anyone roostering turns and actually riding while doing fmx before.

What I always loved was his pure mx approach and powering through every corner. So rad. No one rode like him.

OG freestyle! Dirt jumps and no back flips! Wide open on a 125! Unreal.

I remember watching this live, truly one of the defining moments of extreme sports, just opened it all up and showed how much more there was to come!
I should have finished the clip before commenting....

What an inspiration you are Travis ! Top athletes that have ever existed !
Brutal, simply brutal, and he was just a teenager! Deep respect for Travis
It's amazing to see what motocross has evolved in to within 20 years. To think this was barely scratching the surface is amazing.
Suspension sure has came a long way.
Funny watching these old clips was such a new sport the announcers had no clue what to say
I love how he attacked the entire freestyle course like he was racing it
Tout simplement fabuleux ! Quand on voit ce qu'il était capable de faire à 16 ans on comprend la suite de sa carrière. Un homme hors du commun !
These years were the really freestyle...There are no words to describe Travis
I'm was at the maximum level of excitement when I'm watching this back then.
Great to see x games WITHOUT a back flip and everyone is freaking out! Ahhhh the good ol' days....
Fricken legend!
It’s so cool to see all the different tricks he can do, way cooler than any backflip combo people do today
С алматы привет .молодец .такой молодой .
This was so rad at the time 🙂
Шикарно!
It's so refreshing to watch all videos and not have to look at backflips constantly
Dirtramps, short landings and a 125 bike whit 0 error margin on the inruns and still pulling the tracks biggest jumps like a boss!

15 years old...
Good old days notice everyone is enjoying the event minimal security nothing like these days everyone just films with their smartphones.

Bring back rutted fmx courses ! Back when you had to know how to ride a bike to compete.
