Anne Northup, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher &The United Nations. Connect directly w/ the spirit of Lonnie & Muhammad Ali at The Ali Center, www.alicenter.org
Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.; January 17, 1942) is an American former professional boxer, generally considered among the greatest heavyweights in the history of the sport. A controversial and polarizing figure during his early career, Ali is now highly regarded for the skills he displayed in the ring plus the values he exemplified outside of it: religious freedom, racial justice and the triumph of principle over expedience. He is one of the most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years, crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC.
Ali began training at 12 years old and at the age of 22 won the world heavyweight championship in 1964 from Sonny Liston in a stunning upset. Shortly after that bout, Ali joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name. He converted to Sunni Islam in 1975.
In 1967, three years after winning the heavyweight title, Ali refused to be conscripted into the U.S. military, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to American involvement in the Vietnam War. He was eventually arrested and found guilty on draft evasion charges and stripped of his boxing title. He did not fight again for nearly four years-losing a time of peak performance in an athlete's career. Ali's appeal worked its way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, where in 1971 his conviction was overturned. Ali's actions as a conscientious objector to the war made him an icon for the larger counterculture generation.
Ali remains the only three-time lineal world heavyweight champion; he won the title in 1964, 1974, and 1978. Between February 25, 1964 and September 19, 1964 Muhammad Ali reigned as the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion.
Nicknamed "The Greatest", Ali was involved in several historic boxing matches. Notable among these were the first Liston fight, three with rival Joe Frazier, and one with George Foreman, where he regained titles he had been stripped of seven years earlier.
At a time when most fighters let their managers do the talking, Ali, inspired by professional wrestler "Gorgeous" George Wagner, thrived in-and indeed craved-the spotlight, where he was often provocative and outlandish. He controlled most press conferences and interviews, and spoke freely about issues unrelated to boxing. He transformed the role and image of the African American athlete in America by his embrace of racial pride and his willingness to antagonize the white establishment in doing so. In the words of writer Joyce Carol Oates, he was one of the few athletes in any sport to "define the terms of his public reputation."
"It’s said that “behind every great man there’s a woman.” So how do you classify the woman who stands beside the man considered Greatest of All Time? A man, who years after leaving the ring, remains the most recognizable figure in boxing, perhaps in the world? His legacy, as one of the finest athletes in history, is only rivaled by his outspoken activism to an unpopular cause; a commitment that would eventually rob him of his status, his youthful agility, and his world title. Muhammad Ali’s life story-facets, rumors, truths-continues to be a rich broth generating an embarrassment of books and biopics. His youthful antics, razor-sharp word play, and incredible talent linger on as the inspiration for those who aspire to his throne. But not even champions are immune from the arbitrary tricks of fate, the consequences of their choices, the unconscionable devastation of illness. Sometimes, even the Greatest of All Time needs help. And so, we watched with relief, as this bitter turn of events perpetrated on one of the brightest stars of our times turned into a compelling love story. That is what happened when Muhammad Ali married the young, vivacious Yolanda (Lonnie) Williams. Lonnie Ali has never been a silent partner. She has chosen the spotlight in order to give voice to a man who can no longer do that for himself. Her continuing contribution to her husband’s values and quality of life, a life influenced by 33 years of illness, is beyond reproach. She knowingly chose this path and accepts all the ramifications; not just the accolades, but the criticism from those who question her position and power. And she does this with great dignity. It is through her that he remains a potent, philanthropic force. If somewhere in the dictionary Muhammad Ali’s name is listed under Champion, then so is hers. She is, after all, the champion’s champion; and I am privileged to offer this intimate interview with the wife of The Greatest, a great woman herself, Yolanda Lonnie Ali." - Jill Diamond, boxing.com

He talked more than any other boxer of his era, he said everything that had to be said. At the end he was a silent messenger. It was all God's/Allah's plan. RIP GOAT. 🐐🥊🙏🏾

I boxed when I was 14 and my hero was Ali I checked out as many library books as they had on him , I eagerly waited to watch his fights on wide world of sports, I tried to mimic his style , dancing and flickering my jab out . It wasn’t till I got older did I understood the draft dodging and his Muslim faith and I still didn’t form a opinion because he was just Muhammad Ali the greatest of all times.

i know this comment is old. But Ali explained that he has good days and bad days. These are one of his good days. Photographers and his kids confirmed that is indeed the case as well. He would have terrible days of tremors and he would have great days where he could speak loud and clear. Had to do with his medicine dosage. Most have said if you catch him after a good night sleep he could usually talk pretty well early in the morning.
