i feel like while we (thankfully) didn't have a return of the "tribal print" we definitely did have a rise of like cowboy aesthetics and so i think you still nailed that prediction!
I think nautical themes like lobsters, starfish, fish, and even boats will be bigger next year! Can confirm as someone who designs for a few big fashion companies!
Love the addition of Google trends for quantitative data! I totally agree that you're ahead of the curve on androgynous fashion and moving away from cutesy bows, but I also theorize that the bows had more lasting power and longevity as a trend to the GP *because* of the election anxiety (and the outcome). I think that there is something self-soothing about dressing more childishly as an adult when feeling powerless or helpless, because you're the one making the choice to sort of regress back into the more helpless state of a child.
Like that Miranda Priestly comment about florals in spring .... Flannels for fall? Groundbreaking 💚 Lol loved this video and can't wait to see next year's predictions if you do that!
on the maritime motifs- in the knitting world a pattern called "the halibut sweater" by Caitlin Hunter really blew up! so i agree with your maritime motifs prediction. also on the tribal print- in the knitting/crochet world ive seen a lot of "south western" blanket patterns trending... but that may just be me!
Not sure if it would work as a search term, but some of the stuff you’re describing (like visible bra, casual to the point of rebellion, etc) sounds to me a lot like indie sleaze
You were so spot on with so many predictions! I would love to know if you have heard anything about the medieval fashion sub trend. I'm seeing it all over the place!
I like when you were predicting “ looks that prioritize rebellion and messiness to the point that it stops being casual and starts being party attire “ you basically predicted brat summer
I’ve always heard “Underwear as outerwear” used to reference the trend of visible bra. Also maybe I’m biased coz icy blue has been my favorite color forever, but I saw it everywhere at the mall yesterday. Idk, the pastel blue trend has officially trickled down. I think that’s full credit lol
realizing I was here for the 2024 prediction video made me realize time isn't real, how has it been over a year already since I've found your videos?? we're all dying but I'm just dying for the 2025 predictions
i agree you were spot on with the bows! I love my androgynous fashion, and I still love a bow, but I was surprised to see how many bow items are still popping when I went into target the other day
Moccasins started trending within my school! I live in the northern midwest, so it's a bit cold, and SO MANY girls (not really popular with the guys) have moccasins at my school, including me. They're SO comfy and perfect for cozy school vibes (do not take 4 APs! I might go insane) but at least i look cute in my moccasins 🗣🔥
I recently found your channel and totally binged it. Thrifty fashion analytics is a niche i can get behind! And this is your first upload in my sub box
If trend sales have gone up, a great contribution is the availability to curvy women. No longer relegated to only dark solid colors to make us look smaller, we are opting for the bold brights that match our hearts and desires! And….the key word for me is not casual but the word comfortable.
fwiw bombas really is about donating those socks too (and not like toms back in the day sheesh). I have worked multiple places where we got socks from them to give out to people and it was great, people loved them and nobody needs good, durable, warm socks like people who may stay outside.
This got me noodling on how to quantify "trendy" vs "mainstream". If you're looking at google search data, maybe the percent increase is more valuable than the number of searches itself? Also how to best include seasonality? So fun so complicated
it is so complicated!! These graphics do only show percent increase rather than the number of searches, which I think makes sense to track trends, but I can't even see the actual search quantity for a lot of these things! Also thinking of seasonality is why I started including so many comparing all of 2023 to all of 2024 rather than just a year ago vs now. even when data is subjective, our interpretations are always biased!
@beepwrld Thank you for sharing more about your process, I should've asked instead of throwing suggestions out there! & I loved that you did the whole year graphs - I started thinking about seasonality because it looked like no one cares about fashion in the summer 😆
@@marymcnally2552 no no your comment was totally good!! I also noticed that with the seasons lol, I think because a lot of these trends were more cool-weather focused??
I want to validate you with the Southwestern trend prediction; “Western wear / Americana” is HUGE in menswear right now! 2023 was still alllll about workwear and tech apparel for menswear, but this year people started leaning away from that and more towards “grandpa” style or a cowboy aesthetic. So you were on to some kind of vibe in the zeitgeist in my opinion!
In 2008-2010ish I wore this fisherman-like cardigan that I think I got from American Eagle or Aeropostale or something. I got lots of compliments every time.
You really have the nose for trends! If I may make a somewhat negative remark: while the idea of putting a high-pass audio filter over your past videos works very well narratively, I think you must have set the resonance too high (I don't know what parameters your editing software allow you to modify) and it's creating a lot of high frequencies that are quite unpleasant :( It's really just a matter of form, the video itself is well-written and enjoyable to watch
I feel like Sabrina Carpenters Espresso album cover *maybe* helped contribute to girlies wanting to embrace the icy blue (plus shes wearing a sailor/nautical looking neckline/outfit)
I’m Nordic, Baltic, and Slavic, and I’ve been super into adding folk elements this year, and was hoping to see more of that becoming a thing… think the whole “boho” “cultural revolution” fashion rise in the 70’s where they just kind of appropriated a whole bunch of different cultures folk dressing, except everyone is encouraged to derive creative ideas from their own cultures. This partly started when I realized I was wearing my grandma’s rings every day, then bought a Baltic Amber pendant as a sort of “totem” to feel closer to my family… think boho chic don’t right-meets family heirloom pieces- meets personalized handmade craft items…. The possibilities are beautiful and ENDLESS!
Okay I literally was referring to my entire summer as “Lobster Girl Summer” a move which ended up kicking off a tiny lobster plush knit along in Lindsay Degen’s Knit Club, but I can’t say for sure if this was influenced BY YOU cus I def watched that video last year 😂 Anyway I went full lobster, wearing my mini plush as a bag charm, investing in a vintage gold lobster charm and having a nautical nail set with a lobster that crossed three nails in the peak of summer. On another note, I am still hanging on to bows, and def still seeing them places (Damson Madder this fall and winter is still full up on bows) but I do think I am incorporating them in with other stuff that is more androgynous for sure, so it’s more balanced and less straight girly.
clarks had an exeptionally popular moccasin inspired shoe this year (the wallabee) so I don't think you're wrong at all about that. I feel like similar styles are still coming.
honestly this is a concern I had while working on this because I am not a data scientist, so I did my best with the data I had access to, but I would love tips for stronger data interpretation skills in the future!!
As a data scientist, I think her use of keywords and charts wasn't so bad! I liked seeing the full two-year timeframe as opposed to two snippets for comparison with possibly differing axes. I think perhaps the Sherpa jacket and plaid flannel shirt graphs are too close (and too heavily seasonally driven) to really say whether they're truly up based on graph alone. There's always going to be a tradeoff between conclusive "change" in either an upwards or downwards direction, and the degree of statistical effort and data quantity you can throw at making the determination. For a quick and dirty assessment (which is also fairly common in real-world industry), I don't think Liz was too far off.
oh this is really interesting! i wonder if the lack of reaction to ai is actually kind of a good thing - it’s been taken up everywhere and has impacted mine and other people’s industries but with almost no impact on the culture in a meaningful way. which is strange when you think about it. like ai (as in large language models) are low key not particularly threatening long term right now? like if they really were, surely we’d be seeing a much more existential reaction in the culture at large. there’s been so many issues with them im sorta expecting companies to quietly scale back in a few years after this weird patch. imho i see a lot of the diy trends you where talking about as a response to the amount screen time imbedded in people’s lives (particularly social media). that actually seems like the bigger issue to the culture at large at the moment. so maybe a little bit of credit to ai speeding up the creation of slop content. i took up crocheting this year in part to replace phone scrolling with a different activity, and wonder if other people are doing the same (10/10 do recommend if anyone is interested in cutting down their screen time).
I think colour wise green got very in this year? I could be wrong or bias cos green is my favourite... I also know not many people like green =_= but I know those who do can get crazy :p just like the purple people hahaha
I feel like you got the 2D clothing thing though, just maybe not in the way you were initially thinking. Did we not see the rise of screen printing clothes on clothes? What's more 2D than a picture of a T-shirt on a T-shirt.
The sound in last year clips was horrendous. Idk if you put some effect on it, but it was like scratching nails on a blackboard. Pity, bc the rest of the video was fun
Your know what’s been a trend this year? Appropriation of queer fashion, especially lesbian style. Like no! Stop. It’s a subculture and a community not fashion inspiration 😭 (You reminded me this when you mentioned a lot of influencers have been leaning more masculine or androgynous with their style and while that’s fine, there’s also been an appropriation of specific queer symbols and style signaling with a long history like carabiners, by both cishet women and men. Obvs this doesn’t apply to anyone within the community, n matter how queer or not they look.)
i feel like while we (thankfully) didn't have a return of the "tribal print" we definitely did have a rise of like cowboy aesthetics and so i think you still nailed that prediction!
Also rise of native beading to general audience (of non tribal iconography but by native artists… or knock-offs I guess )
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊p
Also Polo Ralph Lauren did a collab with Naiomi Glasses that was 100% the vibe of ‘Southwestern’ though not problematic because she’s Navajo!
2:31 not you predicting brat summer and the messy party girl aesthetic
brat summer really arrived at the perfect time for it to be so disruptive because people were getting tired of that overly polished look
Re: maritime - canned fish were super trendy this year. Sardines etc.
I know you're right, but that's an objectively hilarious statement
@@user-rz9rq7pp2b 😂😂😂
Oh man I noticed a huge uptick in sardine cans in things!!! Super cute but definitely an odd one.

Between Brat and Wicked, I feel like the colour of this year was green! (Very happy about it.)
That and burgundy.
Edit: Although now that I think about it, burgundy didn’t really take off until fall. Green has been more of an all-year thing.

also the release of wicked could be a contributing factor
Yes!! I love it when people actually follow up their predictions!
My 60s-inspired wardrobe is waaaaaaiting for mustard yellow to make its comeback. 💛💛💛 I love yellow so much but butter is not it for me.
Oh no. Not mustard yellow again. Didn't we have that just recently??
I wouldn't object to 60's style otherwise, though 😅
@@raraavis77822015 was very mustard yellow. I can’t believe that was 10 years ago!

moccasins and southwestern might still be coming. i feel like cowboy hasnt fully gone away and cow hide was popular this year.
