Hey Mel, I just wanted to say that this voice-over during this video hit me differently. In the best way. You're being very honest and open about your experience and it makes the journey of "an artist" so much more relatable and makes it applicable to my situation. That alone is a piece of art. Thank you so much for sharing and I just looooove the artworks of your cats. If you ever decide to sell them I'll be first in line ;)
Wow, so well said! It took me a long time to not be precious with my sketchbooks and really just let them be that safe space you talked about. It is so freeing to see them as "just a sketchbook" and take the pressure off of having to create perfect pieces of art on every page.
Love your dancing pencil and the ideas and comments thank you. Finding the will to declutter (age related) when I still love 'my toys' difficult. My daughter suggested that I paint a memory in a sketch book and keep that (smaller space). Bye the way just found you will listen in again .
year 2019 when I started uploading video to YT and I didn't really know what I was going to post about art I couldn't show my process in portrait using charcoal and graphite and colored pencils because I only use a cellphone. I thought of another medium where I can create new content and when I saw your channel I had hope and an idea I don't know how many times I watched your video because it was so relaxing and inspiring. And because of that I made of new content using gouache and hopefully someone will watch and somehow I can also inspire viewers.
I don't use a sketchbook, mainly because I have the basic fear of "messing up". When I first started drawing I bought a huge pack of what is essentially cheap paper you'd likely find in a pre-school or grade school. Like.. 500 sheets for maybe $10? That's what helped me keep drawing. Roughly half a year later, as I've really started getting the hang of the most basic level of shading, I'm starting to really consider getting a sketchbook, or to finally use the one that I've left empty for so long. They are totally right though, even if you're just doing really basic things like basic cubes or curves, or whatever -- that's totally cool and you're going to love checking out your work later on in life. As for me and my loose paper.. My art is scattered throughout many boxes in the home. Some get ruined, others survive. I enjoy stumbling across my work every now and again, but really should try to consolidate!
Great ideas Melanie! It's very true that sometimes (almost every time for me), you have to push yourself to do the things that are good for you. It's totally a process and I find I have to "talk myself into" doing such things to make them habits. Dealing with teen children and their big kid problems require me to do this, but it doesn't mean it's easy. Like for instance, I have to go for a walk today. I totally don't want to. It is hot out and I'm tired, but I'm going bc I know I will feel so much better afterwards or if I don't I can at least say I did something today. I try to make 5 goals per day and follow those no matter what. Im trying to incorporate creating a sketchbook, but I find it so intimidating. For me, making final pieces of art are easier. Maybe it's the idea 💡 that all of my work is in one place. I don't know. I suffer from perfectionism and I'm just trying to let go. We shall see. I do have a sketch in mind, so I'm going with your idea of setting a mindset and for me that means creating a prompt list, or themes and then just letting myself play even if it turns out like shit. At least I can close the sketchbook afterwards and take a break. I find when I look at it again w new eyes, I view my art differently and w a less critical eye. I'm going w what you said - doing it when I don't want to, to make it a habit. It takes 69 times to learn a new vocabulary word in a foreign language (I'm a linguist or it used to be my career). I'm trying to implement that idea in painting. On that note, thanks for the video. The kitties were so cute. I like how you theme your ideas with color scheme and try to have them reflected or related over a two page thread. Im going to try to do the same. Now to the dreaded walk.....-Jessica aus Amerika

I love the cats on the beach painting💕🏖
🤣🤣🤣 The looks on their little faces!! They look disgruntled, like they would if they were really at the pool. This was so fun!🤣🤣🤣
Yes! Thank you 😁

Once you fill out few pages in the sketchbook that perfectionism goes away and also you can come back months later and fix pages you don't like
So cute
