Are Jews White?

  • While some Ashkenazi Jews may appear white and identify as such, the concept of whiteness is complex.
Historically, Jews were considered a separate and inferior race and yet, over time, antisemitism, assimilation efforts and rising socioeconomic status have influenced the perception of “Jewish whiteness.”
However, this categorization overlooks the experiences of Jews of Color and non-Ashkenazim and further perpetuates the ongoing antisemitism Jews face today.

Caucasian means "from the Caucasus", but was applied to Europeans when Johann Blumenbach divided humans into five colors--black, brown, yellow, red and white. He thought the skull of a Caucasian concubine epitomized the ideals of "whiteness" so used that term for white people. It's a pseud-scientific term but people in the US used it in the 19th century because they thought it sounded more scientific. For most of the world it is confusing because Caucasian specifically means Armenian, Georgian, Azeri, etc.

I remember my grandma (born 1921) saying “we aren’t Irish we’re Scots-Irish”!to describe our ethnic origins. She was technically right- researching our genealogy proved this so, however due to prejudice this was a common way to distance ourselves from the “other”. My bio dad was Cajun- another ethnicity not considered “white” at times. I think in this case it was a language issue- I remember French language tv shows on our local stations in the 70’s and 80’s and many of us had parents and grandparents who were native speakers. The whole concept is pretty complicated and unfortunately has a really dark past. I personally do believe that it is a real thing and not just a social construct, and honestly I think the existence thereof is actually really really cool, think about it, imagine a world where all of us looked basically the same, how boring would that be? Its existence in my opinion is just another thing that makes all of us more unique, and I think every person on the planet should be proud of who they are and where they came from. It's just things like slight differences that helped us survive in our environments in which we belived for however many thousands of years, one big thing is how different pigment levels that helped either block sunlight because it was abundant, or let more in because we lived somewhere where we didn't have as much sunlight throughout the year, ultimately helping prevent sunburn or cancer, or contrastly helping us keep balanced levels of vitamins, but one that I think is actually particularly cool and honestly helpful is the subtle differences in bone structure, which in forensics can help determine what a skeleton would have looked like when they were alive which has helped us solve SO MANY missing person cases, and even further for things like Ötzie (I don't know if I spelled that right), that frozen guy from the Alps where we can see where ancient people came from.
I think however the concept of judging someone based on our appearance isn't something that really should be blamed on one particular group or another, because that comes from all kinds of different groups of people, and I think the origin of this comes from something pretty interesting. Basically, as groups of people developed isolated from others they of course slowly evolved to be a little different depending on their environment, and this evolution isn't exclusively in physical appearance, but also culture, language, religion, but the real important one that I think is actually the real root and cause of all of this is that we developed both different tolerances and intolerances to diseases. Whenever two separated groups of people came into contact, in even the not so so distant past, both groups became exposed to different diseases that would result in tragic loss for both people's, and I think that resulted in a sometimes subconscious and sometimes on-purpose motivation to avoid outlanders. Unfortunately people at that time across the globe were not all on the same page scientifically so people came to different conclusions as to WHY they didn't want to interact with certain groups of people. This could be directed towards certain religions, languages, cultures, even architecture :( but the one that we focus on the most today is appearance, and this although came from innocent origins of simply trying to protect your kin from sickness, it over time evolved into something pretty tragic.
Today we live in a world that's different. We now have vaccines so the threat of disease is largely an easily avoidable problem as long as you just use your common sense. Our discrimination today is COMPLETELY IRRATIONAL. Not only is the disease thing really not a problem anymore, but we also now know that biologically there's nothing about our appearances that makes anyone less than another. Regarding culture, I think we live in a REALLY cool point in time where it is SO easy to gain exposure to other people through both the internet and easy transportation, and honestly if we all expose ourselves to other cultures we can find 'oh this aspect of this other culture is something really cool that works well for them and really seems to improve their quality of life' and therefore we can actually refine our own cultures to adopt aspects of others lives and in a way work together as ONE HUMANITY to improve the GLOBAL quality of life. We can now look at other's architecture and admire it, and if you don't that's fine, but I personally love seeing the differences among us and how we have made ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL creations all across the globe. I don't know about you but I think that is SO SO COOL!!!
As for the title of the video, I think honestly there really isn't an actual answer and I think the question in itself isn't very useful, and here's where I agree on why it is a social construct. See I think that it is real, but how we previously defined it wasn't very scientific, but we also lived in a time where global interaction wasn't as common as now, so in a way it was easier to make the distinction, but for the wrong reasons. Originally we all started off in one place and that's ultimately why we're all the same species, and then we spread out and isolated ourselves, evolved into our uniquenesses and what not, BUT, those differences are not separated by clear boundaries, and it's pretty much the same thing linguistically too. Arabic is a pretty big language, and is spoken in many many countries. If you were dropped off in say the middle of Saudi Arabia and learned how to speak Arabic exactly like how they do there, and then took yourself 50 miles west towards Africa, there would be slight differences in how they speak, but you'd still have no trouble communicating, and if you keep that pattern up, by the time you reach far North-West Africa, it's still Arabic but you'd really struggle to communicate because it just slowly became almost unrecognizable, and you at that point would be inclined to label the language of your home village in Saudi Arabia and Morocco as completely different, but it's really just one big thing that in linguistics we call a 'dialect continuum'. I think our appearances are the exact same way. You start in Northern Finland and work your way down to South Africa, the change in appearance in theory should be almost unnoticeable, similar to the frog in cold to hot water thing. So in all reality there isn't really a clear distinction on where a label for one group of people starts and ends, instead we artificially make that distinction, thus, the 'social construct' with the boarders of countries, which is entirely political and not based on anything material. So depending on where a someone is from, his appearance will simply just be different, and when comparing the appearance of any two people, the difference of appearance will be more subtle or more obvious depending on the distance between the homelands of those to people. Furthermore, in the modern age as we all have, in reality, super easy transportation compared to our past, and people migrate into other societies those differences become mixed together and that makes that unscientific distinction of that past that a lot of us still have deeply engrained into our societies, pretty hard to make, and who knows, maybe in the distant future the idea our differences might be something that completely fades away if we end up all merging together, and maybe some crazy situation might happen before then that causes us to go back several thousand years and we develop entirely new differences, who knows.
The important thing is to be kind to one another and to celebrate our differences! Let us admire our unique developments and different advancements in technology or culture. For crying out loud, the Proto-Indo-Europeans likely domesticated the horse and developed the wheel and we descendants of them should be proud of that, during the Middle Ages the Arabs had some of the best physicians that the world had ever seen up until that point, and anyone who's Arab should be proud of that. Look into who you are, where you came from, learn more about what your ancestors did to contribute to modern society, and that could be something beneficial like math, science, engineering, medicine, and it could be more entertainment based things like music. Oh music!!! How cool are the different kinds of music that we have all come up with! The European 12 tone equal temperament scale is so beautiful, the syncopation of African music giving us the concept of groove! So many popular genres of music wouldn't even exist if there was no concept of syncopation and groove. The microtonal notes and the unique time signatures of Indian music! Oh my goodness it is so so cool! Be proud of who you are! Every single one of us comes from some group of people, and every single one is FILLED with an incredibly rich history and the world would be a pitiful place if we didn't have these.
Love yourself, and love others. We are all beautiful and wonderful beings, and our uniquenesses are something to celebrate and learn from. There's this movie based on a book, both are called 'The Giver', both the book and the movie are absolutely fantastic! The basic plot if you haven't seen or read it, is there's this society where there is literally no uniqueness, there is no color, no music, no dancing, the only real differences are basically fingerprints, eyes, age, height, personality, but pretty much everything else is gone. Anyway, there's a scene in the movie where our historical uniquenesses get exposed to this society and there's this montage of all these different cultures and it shows both the terrible, and the beautiful, and it's really powerful emotionally, and I seriously recommend giving that scene in particular a watch, but the book and the full movie really are so good. There's also 'We Are The People' by Marin Garrix, Bono and The Edge, and Martin Garrix did a more dance festival remix version of the song and the music video for that has a really similar concept and I also recommend giving that a watch.

Very good video, but I think you miss two critical pieces of context:
    1) Tom Watson veered from being friendly to African Americans to being hostile to them, depending how on what was more advantageous to him politically. As such, him viewing Jews as worse than Blacks isn’t surprising at all (given that there were so few Jews in Georgia and as such they made a very easy target not matter which way the wind was blowing$
    2) you seem to use “Christian” and “Anglo Saxon” as almost synonyms. That really isn’t accurate. Fr Coughlin was an Irish Catholic Priest, who likely would have reacted with violence had he been called “Anglo Saxon.” There were many European ethnic groups not considered white at that time. It was a messy line. I know you can’t cover all of that, but some reference to that would be good.

Particularly these days is very difficult to pack people into "different races" based on the colour of their skin.
Although Tamils are predominantly of very dark skin, no one will call them blacks, though Tamil it is not considered a race, but an ethnic group as much as Jews are.
The only time colour becomes an important factor is when one has to describe a person by their most prominent physical characteristics, such, again, colour of their skin.
Using skin colour as a parameter to judge social and cultural characteristics of a person, or a group, is simply wrong and discriminatory.
At the same time, making racism a crime allows us to believe that a person should be separated into groups based on the colour of their skin , while discrimination should be considered more accurate to describe that particular crime, although it doesn't carry as much weight as racism.
The idea of different races among humans has been adopted for far too long, so much so that we keep forgetting that we humans, as a whole, are a race regardless of skin tone.
Anything else has been craftily designed to keep us separated, which in turn makes the vast majority of us to be easily dominated by a minority , as it keeps happening today.
    Greetings from Toronto.

Good and informing presentation, Sir. I learned a lot here. Having good understanding is crucial if we are to solve prejudices, so thank you for all your hard work here, Sur🌹🌿🌷So Jews have been singled out only because they're Jews? I am so sorry for any and all acts of prejudice committed against jews. Jews have contributed so much good to humanity and I have no doubt that there are a lot of good people who are Jewish, and (at the same time) it may be for more than just one reason why they were singled out. I'd love to open up the conversation with you on that, like are some Jews prejudice against gentiles (just because they're gentiles)? And has there ever been a boss (who happened to be Jewish) who was less than fair to his workers? If so, has this happened more than once (so, have gentiles ever suffered at the hands of Jews? If so, did it ever happen more than once in history)? And can we talk about the casualties of WWII that were of different races or nationalities (not Jewish)? Do Jews feel so bad for them too? I don't doubt that white supremacists exist, and it's atrocious that it exists 😞😡 but are there other groups out there too who have ever behaved like supremacists also? If so, who? Have Jews ever partaken in such attitudes against other groups? If so, it's not about the person who's doing the wrong, it's the act and attitude (thinking and upbringing) that is wrong- no matter whose doing the wrong. Don't you think? So, it's not a race thing- it's an attitude and way of thinking that's wrong. Don't you think?

These are separate issues. As the reply by @Nancy-mi3xe states, there are people who behave poorly and those who behave well in every race and religion. What is also true, is that many people target or/and discriminate against others who are "different" from them--who aren't from the same race, ethnicity, or/and creed as they are. This latter issue is what the video is about. This type of discrimination DOES exist and is a major problem in society. For a while, it was more hidden after the end of World War II but has now been more up front due to Donald Trump enabling this type of hatred with his harmful rhetoric. And while I wasn't alive at the time, my late mother was and told me how the popular singer Kate Smith (known today mostly for her rendition of God Bless America) spoke out against Father Coughlin's divisive radio diatribes as mentioned in the video. Father Coughlin lost a lot of his popularity after that because Kate Smith was very popular and respected and a fellow Catholic. Kate Smith did a tremendous service to the country with that and it should not be forgotten.

    Re: jgoff76
The Irish/Italian situation isn't comparable to the Jewish one, imo. For one thing, Irish and Italians are European populations. Jews are a MENA diaspora. Second, antisemitism is still a massive problem in America and other white majority societies. Jews are still excluded and targeted by white supremacy. Neither of these things is true of Irish and Italians.

"Caucasian" was a term that Johann Blumenbach used when he categorized people into five groups and though the best looking white people were from the land of Joseph Stalin. It's pure pseudo-scientific bunk but 19th century racists liked it because it sounded more scientific--and hence "factual"--than using the term "white". It was used in law and there's even a Supreme Court case US v Thind, that found that while an Indian was "Caucasian" he wasn't the right kind of Caucasian (even though he argued in his case that he knew how to be racist against non-Caucasian Indians, in the end it didn't make a difference.)

Why was the ADL created? And if Whiteness is a social construct, then all other "races" are also constructs, and there's no such thing as an African-American, but only what is perceived to be one. So, if someone was born in, say, Osterbotten Sweden, to a family of Sapmi people, but immigrated and lives in the USA, they can be "Black/African American", even if they don't speak English but rather their own native Uralic tongue, or have ever had any contact with any "Blacks", because they can be seen as such by others that think they are "Black" or by the "non-Blacks".

Some anthropologists argue there is a very small population of a fourth race called "Australoid" to refer to people indigenous to the continent of Australia. That's it. It's not a "social construct". "Social Construct" is a term invented by racists, specifically Leftist identitarians, to carve out a boogie man for people to hate. It's cultural Marxism and it is the true racism infecting the West today. I thought that, for as short a presentation as it was, this piece did a pretty good job of presenting part of the history of the social construction of race and how Jews fit into social constructions of race, ethnicity and religion in America. But the intersectionality of these concepts is difficult to disentangle. In many respects, it diminishes the magnitude of the problem if you do try untangling these different social constructs.
I haven't looked over this channel much yet, but I'm curious if you've had a sociologist on to discuss the concept of social constructionism and how different social constructions interact. I'm sure there are a number of Jewish sociologists out there who could help people understand the importance of social constructs and how social constructs change over time.
My interest in this is both personal and professional. I've been married to a Jewish woman for nearly forty years now, and with social and political tensions in this country just now, we're considering where we might go should civil unrest turn into civil war. On the professional side, I spent 12 years working on a PhD in Sociology, with my minor focus on sociology of religion. Because narcolepsy caught up with me and made it increasingly difficult to concentrate, I ended up with a MA in Sociology. Seeing the contrast between Judaism and Christianity here in America has helped me immeasurably in understanding the many ways religion affects the choices we make that shape our futures.

Important points. Please be clear that Jewishness is not just about religion; Jews are a people, and the traditions of the Jews include Jewish ways of worship. When someone converts to "Judaism" (a term invented by Christians), they are not just taking on a religion. They're being adopted into the Jewish people. Just as some indigenous tribal peoples welcome newcomers into their tribe, and in the midst, the adoptees take on the rites and observances of the tribe, among other cultural practices, so it is with the Jewish people.

    • @johndemeritt3460
      @johndemeritt3460 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Historian212, please accept my apologies if I didn't make myself clear. I understand Jews as an ethnic group, a religious group and, in the eyes of some, a racial group as well. To be completely clear, we should distinguish between Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and other ethnicities among Jews, because their practices aren't all the same. But the intersectionality between religion, ethnicity and other social strata make it difficult for outsiders -- particularly those raised in societies that have a dominant religious group that tries to bring everyone to a singular agreement about the meaning of scriptures and acceptable behaviors within the group and toward outsiders -- is difficult to disentangle. And Christianity is particularly apt to try to untangle what is so tightly integrated as Jewish people are with their religion and ethnic practices.
Another way of looking at this is that where, in my experience, Jews focus more on belonging and behavior, Christians focus on belief. As a result, Christians try to force the Bible to provide a singular answer about what to BELIEVE that is supposed to apply to all Christians everywhere and everywhen.
Jews have Talmud. Two of them, if I recall correctly. And neither the Bible nor Talmud are interested in belief so much as behavior . . . with LOTS of room for variation across place, time, and the larger society within which Jewish communities exist.

    • @kdogwal581

You cannot untangle social constructs because they are not real, they are figment of people’s imagination. Used to further political/social objectives. Depending on who you ask will determine what social construct is and isn’t. Just because a few individuals come together to argue what is considered a social construct does not make it real. For example, we can all believe the Earth is flat, however through rational observations of reality this is not the case. Why because reality dictates truth, not the interpretation of human beings. Knowledge, is derived from reality not human interaction. This is why social constructionism is wrong, and every time it is implemented we are left with distorted views not reflective of the natural world. That is why essentialism is important, where knowledge is derived from scientific research. Why do we have different ethnic groups? Because on genetic level there is clear distinction, through testable observation, of a groups DNA that, shows distinction. This also applies to the religious question, Judaism is a religion with different ethnic subsets which is backed by genetic data.

    • @johndemeritt3460
      @johndemeritt3460 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@kdogwal581, in a sense, you're correct about social constructs: they don't represent physical reality. But there's a lot you've gotten wrong about social constructs and social constructionism. The incorrect thing is that social constructs are "figments of people's imagination . . . used to further political/social objectives." Social constructs are actually about beliefs people hold in common that affect human behavior. Social construction is the result of a group of people learning how the human social world works. Social Constructionism creates a (usually) unspoken consensus among members of a community that certain things are true and that those things are universally accepted. It's likely that, if you're an American, you didn't consciously learn that America is unique among all the nations of the world: you heard people talk about problems in other countries and that people in those countries are not as good as Americans in some way. You probably took that for granted -- until you met people from other countries and came to see them as who they are. That's the social construct of American Exceptionalism.
Another example of a social construct is the idea of mobile phones. Mobile phones DO actually exist: that reality is hard to deny. But the mutually constructed social reality of mobile phones is that everybody has mobile phones and use them the same ways. It's gotten to the point that a number of people and organizations assume you have a mobile phone. I have, myself, run into businesses that don't even offer the option to submit information on paper: you HAVE to have a mobile phone to do business with them.
I don't have a mobile phone. Don't want one, either. I get along well without one.
From a slightly different perspective, you wrote, "Knowledge, is derived from reality not human interaction." I'll agree to that -- to one extent. But there are two codicils I have to add. First, how we come to agreement about what is real IS a result of human interaction. You and I seem to agree that belief in a flat Earth is not rational and does not accord with physical reality. But flat Earthers seem genuinely convinced that the physical evidence is better explained through the lens of a flat Earth than through a spherical Earth that has gravity and an atmosphere that gradually tapers off in pressure and density until it becomes so thin that it is virtually non-existent. Second, the Scientific Method itself IS a social construct. Granted, it is accepted nearly universally among scientists, but it isn't accepted as universally among people who AREN'T scientists. This exemplifies the difference between EXPERT knowledge and EVERYDAY knowledge. And it's why most of us accept scientific knowledge over everyday knowledge.
But different groups of people have different ideas of everyday knowledge. When I lived in Texas, I knew that I-35 would get stupid at the drop of a hat -- and I was always AMAZED at how often people dropped their hats! In Texas, the "everyday" knowledge was that a little extra speed on the freeway wasn't a problem -- despite the fact that people routinely drove 20 miles per hour or more over the speed limit. I now live in Alabama, and people usually drive 10 to 20 mph over the limit: but lanes seem to be suggestions here. I routinely see people waver across the stripes designating lanes without seeming to care about other peoples' presence (maybe it's a result of people using mobile phones indiscriminately).
As for ethnic groups . . . ethnic groups are NOT genetic in nature. Ethnicity is a matter of people united by social constructs, like religion, and anthropological realities, like language. The genetic aspect of a community comes as a result of the social realties, not the other way around.
If, after all this, you have questions about social construction, I'll be glad to try and answer them.
