Did 550 km on my normal prime X. Just finished a 32k run. With 83 kgs I go through outsoles quickly. A vaporfly doesnt get to 200km on my feet. But this shoe is still not worn out and the bounce is the same as on day 1. Best trainingshoe ever for me. Compared to other shoes I use like speed3 and hyperion max this shoe gives me less pain and 20sec per km faster on same low HR. I am even wondering if I should use it instead of the alphafly on next marathon..GREAT SHOE
I bought this shoe as a replacement for my alphafly 2 after an airpod deflated. Much prefer the look of the Adidas. For me I want to run in the Prime X strung more, and do, but I'm a little wary of doing too much training in it as it does work the ankles... Funnily I find this shoe best when you cruise in it. Will definitely be a good race shoe for me half and above.
Great review, thanks Fordy. And yes, Spurs are the greatest team in the world. I’ve put about 150km into my prime x strung and I can say that they are great BUT as you say, they need good form and they want you to go quick and YOU want to go quick in them. People who are thinking of getting them for daily runs, be warned, it’s impossible to go slow in them partly due to the instability at slow paces but on the positive side, they are just so much fun to run in that you just want to pick the pace up!
I’m a bigger built man and I pronate a little but they are great for me , yes I’m aware they can be unstable on bends and on uneven surfaces, but on roads they soak up the miles and are super bouncy with plenty of energy return, I ve been a fan of it since the start, I don’t think they are a sales gimmick as the prime x has been out nearly 2 years, I think people have bought them and realised how good they are after hearing all the negative stuff and been pleasantly suprised , and all the other companies are bringing out super stack shoes….. Even saucony are ,with their saucony elites😉
100% spot on Fordy As I said in the comments on the poll you did on what to review, you have to think about where you are running with this shoe and also give it some concentration on where you are landing on it. I don't think that is a bad thing though as surely, that would help promote good running form, which I think most of us non elites, especially myself, don't really think about. I don't have the strung version but I have 2 versions of the none strung and they are mustard on my long runs and I absolutely love them. On corners, I 100%ensure I am taking them on the forefoot and at a slow pace as I am pretty sure an ankle incident is almost certain to happen at that ridiculous stack height if not paying attention.🤪 You also don't want to be using these on any uneven surface as you sure will end up with an ankle incident as it would be like Bambi on ice 😛 I did purchase my 2 unis 2nd hand off eBay and got both around the ton mark for each, and I blame Ed Bud for that, but glad he pushed me into it as they are my go-to long cruisers now. My calf went pop yesterday so if it has healed by the time the Olympic Park HM comes up in a few weeks, as I have yet to race in then, I will be rocking down from Brum in them and have a go under race conditions (obviously being cautious on the turns I expect the OP race will have many off)
I agree with it needing a warning sticker. My inner foot doesn’t even rest on the foam, it hangs over the edge of the midsole by a lot because the width of the midsole is too thin (and also probably because of my over pronation needing some inner stability) but I have really thin feet! I don’t know how anyones foot width could be thin enough to fit on that foam, it’s like wearing high heels 😂
Same as with the Alphafly. I have wider feet and run in them just fine now. I did however spend nearly half a year correcting my running form. Along with that I became a forefoot runner. Stability is never an issue after strengthening the lower legs. What really revealed my weak lower legs/feet was when I added hit workouts and sprinting.
So with all the great reviews, I had no choice but to try these. I've tried them 3 times and I did about 20km total. I think the shoe looks great, especially the upper. But the ride, it's not for me, not at this price. I found it quite hard on the quads. Depending on the shoe stack (and other factors), some muscles have to work more. After a few weeks, I would have probably adapted but since I won't race in these shoes, I don't really see the benefits of working these muscles. I much prefer to train in a shoe that is similar to my race day shoe.
One of the best statements out on the new generation of super shoes: "You have to be very careful". Most shoes you can simply run in and they work well enough: they give you a fair bit and don't demand that much from you. They're forgiving of you not optimally conforming to their ideal use. But the Prime X and Alphafly Next % especially, they offer so much more than other shoes, but in return they demand far more focus and discipline with your form and usage. For example, if you don't focus on taking a turn on less than a perfect surface, you can easily misjudge the shoes stability at the worst time, over compensate and suddenly end up with an ankle that 's a lot more perpendicular than parallel to the ground.
Thank you for the review, never a starter for me at £230. Last week I picked up Adistar, Boston 10 and Puma Deviate and still had change left over from £230, so I'll plod along in those and save some money. Fordy you always manage to give Saucony a mention and wave them about 😀!
Bought the strung as I love the prime x, but that upper cuts into me on longer runs. With only 10 miles from new, I went and did the Cornish marathon and they did brilliant, but I already knew how they worked. But yes they're wobbly, but they've always been that, all the strung did was improve the upper.
Thanks for your review. As you note, the shoe is designed for forefoot runners, and is pretty stable if you are one given the wide forefoot It works best at a decent pace, so make sure you run in them before buying. They are unstable at walking pace. I don't know if it's the best shoe because it's like saying what is the best color. I like it for long runs at a decent pace. I didn't like the suit shoe cheapo laces for a €280 shoe, so swapped them out and the lockdown is much better. Note, there is no heel counter in this shoe for those who like one or need one. Love the upper, which was strung by robots, but it does have some volume. I do hope the upper is copied by other manufacturers. And I love the pull tab because it works, can be tucked away, and doesn't add weight to the shoe.
I've really enjoyed running in these. I'm just about 12 stone, average runner and definitely not elite. Yea they're expensive, yea the brand can load up the price tag because of the badge (same as most branded products) and yea they can get away with it. But for me I buy running shoes because I love running and it's my hobby. It's not my daily trainer, but it's good for the odd jaunt just to get time on my feet and focus on my form. My go to shoe is the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2/3. Best shoe range out there.
I had the OG Prime X and got about 30 miles in them before selling them on. They absolutely destroyed my shins as they were so unstable. I was gutted really as I love that lightstrike pro foam but due to the hit my wallet took I just can't justify buying these and taking such another financial gamble. I do want to try that SC trainer from New Balance though
Sounds strange but I think you need to have "Adidas"-feets and form to run in the Prime X. I started 1,5 yo running and two weeks ago had my first HM in the Vaporfly (because of all the positive experiences you, Ben, Ed etc. had with it) was a nice first HM and worked fine for me with 1:40h as the result. My reward was the Strung (because of upcoming long runs for the next goal - a marathon next year) and ohhh boy I feel so much more secure in the Prime X compared to the Vaporfly. In a nutshell - have to agree 100% - you need the "right" running form and feet and if so - wow!
I got the normal prime x and while it’s fun it’s also very scary you’re always one wrong step or uneven surface away from doing yourself some major damage so it’s not relaxing to run in. It might be better at speed Iv not really used it much I would 100% prefer the Saucony pro 3 For me that’s probably the best all round shoe. It works at all paces you could even do a recovery run in them if you wanted too and it’s lighter and it’s just as fast .
I am guessing next year we will be running on trampolines... I am a very heavy over-pronator with a completely flat left foot, but still managing a 1:24 half and 3:15athens marathon (if you know the uphill nature of this course), struggling to find a proper shoe in this day and age. Instability and extreme stack heights make the whole running experience from a simple and joyful daily escape to a rather unpleasant and even risky process. Even though I know it is not my business and everybody makes hs own choices, I still feel a bit sad for these young runners that will not ever have the chance to stride properly and feel the ground or those slow runners that spend a tone of money on Vaporfly's just to run a race that they would run just fine on their daily trainers. I know it is your job to review shoes but things are getting out of control with these stack heights and I seriously consider quitting running now that most stable racers are discontinued (ds trainer, Saucony fastwitch, Brooks ST 5 racer etc. BTW I tried Tempus and even though I give them a thumbs up for thinking out of the box, the shoe feels really slow and out of control when trying to speed up. To be honest I think the same idea applied on a lower stack height with a denser foam instead of this Powerun PB would make for a serious stability sprinter (and with a much much gripier sole of course 🙂...what were you thinking Saucony😅 !!).
I'll give the strung a miss. I need some stability and Adiós Pro3 / Endorphin Pro3 gives me some element of that, both of which I have. Think I'd be all over the place in the strung
Hi - thanks for your review I currently use speed 3's for both speed work and longs runs - I love how light they are. I was looking for another shoe more for long runs / marathon training on tired legs- was looking at Novoblast 3 and was thinking about the pro3 and prime X... ( vs sticking with the speed 3) would be happy to hear your thoughts- thanks
Hi there! I recognize myself with the way you run and stability issues. I'm wearing orthopedic insoles but I got better in my footstep trough the years. Could you recommend me a carbon long distance shoes for Ironman marathon? Should I stop using insoles or keep with them? Thanks Fordy!
i did a night run in a pair of these with a head torch and it was pretty scary, don't get me wrong they are a lovely, cushioned shoe but you are constantly having to watch were you place your foot as you don't want to roll your ankle, at the same time concentrating on your route ahead. i think I'll stick to using them in daylight
I got the Prime X Strung coming next week and I'm really looking forward to it. I have a very good idea of what I'll use it for and how often in my rotation. I love the Adios Pro 3 and Takumi Sen 8 as there's just something about the Lightstrike Pro midsole foam that I like more than other foams from other brands. I'd say it's a balance between softness and firmness and how responsive it is. You seem to get back exactly what you put into it - not any more or any less. I'm mainly a forefoot/mid-foot striker so I don't worry about stability. I don't find the VaporFly 2 unstable at all, so I don't think the narrow heel area of the Prime X Strung will be an issue. And I want to use this on long runs at a good steady pace, not easy/recovery pace. I don't see it as a daily trainer like the Endorphin Speed 3, Novablast 3, Deviate Nitro 2, or the Mach 5 either. And, yes, there are better options for racing which I have - the Adios Pro 3, Endorphin Pro 3, and VaporFly 2. For fast and short, Takumi Sen 8 and Rebel v3. For easy long and recovery runs, Invincible Run 2, GlideRide 3, Clifton 8, and 1080 v12. The Prime X Strung really doesn't fit neatly into any of these general categories. But that's what I find cool about it. Yeah, it's a lot of dough but, hey, my motto is you live only once and just go for it if you want it, and I have a good feeling about how it'll fit in my rotation. I tried the SC Trainer but returned it almost right away. For me, it didn't fit in any of the aforementioned categories I mentioned but didn't stake out its own niche either as I believe the Prime X Strung does or will for me. The SC Trainer, for me, was just too big/bulky, heavy, and the initial footstrike too mushy. Based on my experience with the Adios Pro 3, I know I'll like the Prime X Strung a lot. I've been wavering on the original Prime X for a while but this new upper convinced me to go for it. I'm sure this monster shoe isn't for everyone. I think one needs a very good idea of how this will fit your running style and what specific kind of running and training you'll use it for. I'll certainly post my thoughts after I've had some with it.
How did you find your sizing. I’m tempted to pull the trigger. But have read some people going a full size down while others have stayed true to size. And is the upper any narrower than the endorphin pro 3? Thanks
You can't race in this shoe! It breaks the rules. Or are you saying that because you will almost certainly "get away with it", because you aren't at the sharp end of any race, the rules don't matter? Interesting philosophical debate to be had here!
The rule is exclusively for elite runners so they don't have advantages at the time of competing against each other, winning prices and set records. If Chris, you and I wanna race in the shoe, we are not technically breaking any rule. Now, I think the question is: it fair? Well, is it fair that I can afford Alphaflys (which is a legal shoe) or special nutrition and supplements (legal too) to race against someone that can't? Is it fair that some have more time available to train, when I have to work 12 hours a day and find the time to complete my weekly milage? I think it becomes highly subjective, but that's just my opinion...
I don't class myself as a shoetuber I leave that to the pro's... I just like running and talking about gear but more importantly running with my mates and community
This shoe sums up all that is wrong with the running show corporate game. £230 for a shoe not designed for the average runner, same as the VFly, AFly. Hundreds of £££s for essentially marginal gains when better training, the correct shoes and diet would actually show a significant improvement. I have been fortunate enough to do some local HM, 10ks with some elites at the front. These guys are in Vflys but some are in racing flats and these guys are a sight to behold.. finishing in 1.09 and there's me running in dying 1.16 wearing AFlys. My point is that these companies aided by a lot of social media to push this rhetoric of needed supershoes. I wish more influencers would be more upfront(Fordy not included) and say you don't need these carbon plated shoes at £200 plus - Nike particularly praying on the inexperienced - on plus point, I've bought so many cheap pairs of trainers where they've been worn once because they're not right for that runner.
Great comment and one I agree 100% with.....they used to say 'you get what you pay for' but in this case and many more of the YT influencers vlogs...you certainly don't...... it's becoming laughable and reminds me so much of the road bike YT influencers....hyping up the product.....after all.....clicks mean money at the end of the day.
@@kevingilhooley2064 I get it as well and drives me nuts when I get emails from brands upset at me coz I’ve been negative about their product. I don’t care I’ll keep saying whatever I want I just wish more would. I’d say avoid channels with journalists reviewing stuff as they are getting paid or bigger channels which are media companies paid a fortune to tell you a £130 carbon plate shoe is amazing when it’s pony 🤣
Just waiting for an adios pro3 with the strung upper. Weird to notice that Nike's competitors have to produce illegal shoes to compete with the Alphas. and Vapors. fly.

yep 100%
100% spot on Fordy

Hi thanks for a great review. I just want to know. What is the difference between the Y-3 prime x2 strung vs the regular prime x2 strung?

I just received my first pair. I wear a size 10 in the Prime X strung; I wish I would have the size and 1/2 size down.

I love the Prime X!!!!! Amazing!!
I got the Prime X Strung coming next week and I'm really looking forward to it. I have a very good idea of what I'll use it for and how often in my rotation. I'm mainly a forefoot/mid-foot striker so I don't worry about stability. I don't find the VaporFly 2 unstable at all, so I don't think the narrow heel area of the Prime X Strung will be an issue. how is going?
Just got a pair of these for $140 shipped
Fordy I love this beast but you are scaring me
How did you find your sizing. I’m tempted to pull the trigger. But have read some people going a full size down while others have stayed true to size. And is the upper any narrower than the endorphin pro 3? Thanks
bang on
I went half size down in the OG Prime X, and did the same in the Strung, and it’s perfect. I can’t imagine going true to size in either model.
Shout out to the Endorphin Pro 3. I took it to marathon distance with a PB. And the shoe is a joy at easy to race pace and beyond. Love it!
its a real joy that shoe
I’ve spent too much money on too many mediocre shoes this year. I am loving the adios pro 3, that’s probably my last Adidas for the year.
Don't tell Mrs F but my new ones got delivered today!
@@FordyRuns I am up to 3 racks of shoes. Mrs ErikTheRed is none too pleased 😂.
Prime X Strung narrow use case - It's a bit like having Harry Kane and playing him at centre back..........not far off what Conte is doing to be fair
don't get me started on Conte!!!
If I were Conte I'd put him on the bench.....and never bring him on
.....but then again I am a Gooner.
great advice as usual,go too guy for reviews.
thanks mate
You can't race in this shoe! It breaks the rules. Or are you saying that because you will almost certainly "get away with it", because you aren't at the sharp end of any race, the rules don't matter? Interesting philosophical debate to be had here!
I can wear it at a race as I am not an elite although I try hard to look like one wearing all the gear ... I just have no idea
Every shoetuber overlooks the "carbon" blades in this shoe. Not only is it too high for IAAF regulations - it also have two sets of "spring"-elements.
Fair points mate
Weird to notice that Nike's competitors have to produce illegal shoes to compete with the Alphas. and Vapors. fly.
that will be a sick shoe
