I love how the Japanese culture are happy when people want to wear their traditions, instead of screaming cultural appropriation they see it as a form of flattery. This is a beautiful way of thinking. Copy is the highest form of flattery.
I just re read my comment and realised how rude I sounded so I wanted to clarify- by ‘real deal’ I meant as in the process to becoming a geisha or being a geisha aside from the appearance- sorry if I offended anyone or anything.
The thing to really think about though is what the person is doing with those traditions. Like here, it's wonderful with people, nationals and tourists alike, enjoying and appreciating the culture with respect. I love that - it helps build a connection and understanding with the world around you while being an awesome experience! But, there are boundaries. For example, as a Native American, it's kinda insulting to see people wear poorly done, well, mockaries of lots of different traditional chlothing, war paint, ect., particularly around Halloween. That and the war bonnets at football game day parties. It gives off the feeling, intentional or not, that my culture is somthing of a joke, not respected enough to be taken seriously. They're done, generally, without thought or respect to the culture or cultures they originate from. It quite honestly boils down to one's dedication/intent to use/wear/do something in its proper setting, having researched before to fully see what you are doing (ie, does this piece of chlothing have a major significance that I do not grasp/wish to emulate, ect.), and being mindful (if applicable) to the historical connotations of you doing whatever. It's always good to ask someone from the culture if you can, if nothing else for a source of info on whatever you may be doing.
Wow. I would’ve loved to have this experience as I’m an American makeup artist. When I was visiting Japan, I walked in to a place where they sold the most beautiful kimonos I have ever seen. And the women who worked there grabbed me and just kind of started dressing me in one of their kimonos. I didn’t realize till after I was wearing it all that the whole ensemble was 10’s of thousands of dollars. I was so honored that these women wanted me to wear one of their robes, but I found out later that she said it was an honor and good luck for a geijing to wear the kimono. What a beautiful country and people.

@@YocelinSheller Dear Yocelin, I did my degree in Japanese language and culture 25 years ago. Loved Japanese culture from the age of 10. I like your gentle, respectful attitude in the video. It makes it nice to watch.
I dressed in full Katsura wig, wedding Furisode and faked a Darari Obi knot out of a Maru obi for Halloween as well as the Geta and even made a Washi Paper Chochin lantern on a lacquered bamboo stick I cut from a local bamboo forest complete with a flickering bulb inside. I went as a Kitsune and while I got so many compliments from people from Japan on the accuracy in dressing myself, the movements were quite difficult! It was like wearing a corset and even though I know how to walk in Geta, and it was 8pm at night I felt like I was under the blazing sun so I cant even imagine being in that outfit all DAY! 😱 RESPECT to the girls and women who devote themselves and their lives to their art.
I did a similar thing. During our stay in Kyoto my husband and I took a day to rent kimono and wander about a side street filled with wonderful little shops, restaurants, shrines, and lovely pocket-sized temples. We picked a rental shop that showed the most magnificent men's kimono in the window. Most are grey or black. This one was gleaming white. It was a little tricky for them to dress us. He's 6'2" and I am plus sized, but they managed. Shoes were the only really insurmountable problem, but only for me. They actually came up with a pair for his size 13 (American) feet. My wide foot was something they just couldn't manage, but I compromised and chose a pair men's that fit me quite well. I'm a history re enactor, and dressing up is something quite common for me, so the ritual of getting into kimono was no problem at all. I think they were a little surprised that the tight winding of an obi did not bother me, but when you wear 19th century corsets, the compression is actually something you come to enjoy. The only friction was when they wanted to do my hair in Maiko style. I'm 72 years old and I thought that was silly. I chose, instead, a Japanese matron's style. My dresser told me that in the history of the shop, I was the only one who ever requested it. We all giggled like schoolgirls the whole time. It must have been a holiday or vacation time because there were hundreds of Japanese similarly attired wandering about the tiny street. I think we posed for at least a hundred photos with all manner of friendly, happy people. Most did not speak English--or only a few words, about on a par with my limping Japanese. Nobody batted an eye at the two Americans in their midst, instead they were delighted that we wanted to partake in their lovely day. Smiles greeted us everywhere. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I can't wait to go back.

This is a maiko makeover. They use collars to show the ranks. Honestly, I love the makeup they put on you, it makes your eyes look very pretty. And they made you wear the high wooden heels omg! Your outfit and makeup looks BEAUTIFUL! Loved the hair accessories, too. The little wind chime-y piece I want for me just around the house hahaha great video
I had the best fantasy-fulfilled trip when I finally walked the streets of Gion 2 years back. The lady who did your makeover was very good, and YOU, young lady, had become a stunningly beautiful geiko. No surprise you stopped tourists in their tracks, to gawk, to take pictures, to simply admire. Oh well, you already were lovely even before the makeover. You look so very pretty! I'd love to try that visiting Japan! I miss it a lot, beautiful country, people, culture... just, my absolute favorite place! ❤
I had no clue this was a thing for tourists, that would be so cool to try someday, it would be especially interesting to see how it would look on me seeing as I'm Irish and pretty much as white as white can be XD (Although chances are I couldn't afford it, but it's good to have dreams XD)
They value white skin, so you'd be fine. Now the interesting part would come with someone like myself, as I'm black, lol! (Or African American, if you wish). I'd love to try this though sans the white makeup. Still get the pink around the eyes and the porcelain lips and just do my own foundation before arriving. And my hair is already close to black so it would be okay if it were spray painted, lol! I'm probably a bit too old for the maiko look so a mature geisha would be nice.
They have these types of " dress ups" in many many countries. One time I was dressed up as a Tribal Woman in Thailand and all the locals were laughing so hard and taking pics...I did not know which camera to look at. This one is probably expensive cause it took so much time.
@@jessyncust76 I'm not going to say "should", but it would be nice, lol. I actually got a glimpse of what a black woman as a geisha would sort of look like by watching this video of a biracial woman who was born and raised in Japan. Seeing her and her black side of the family (I suppose female cousins and such) in full furisode kimono and hair pulled back and decorated was pretty amazing and just really goes to show the versitility of how it can fit with almost anyone.
You look beautiful! I just can't believe all the layers upon layers of clothing that they wrapped around you. I am amazed that you could move after all that? Thanks for sharing♥
A woman must have a dresser! She could not do all the garments by herself. Fantastic , thank you for showing me this beautiful dressing. As a New Englander I marvel at all Japanese culture. WONDERFUL,!
Обожаю смотреть на реакции людей когда красивые девушки либо парни одеты в красивую традиционную одежду, это не передаваемые чувства. Вы очень красивая и вам идёт этот наряд и макияж.❤ 🎎❤
Wow. You looked absolutely beautiful as a maiko! I also loved where you took a stroll during the cherry blossom season. Do you remember the date that you did the makeover? I would love to try the makeover during the peak of the cherry blossom season in year 2020. 🙂
Wow. You look so pretty in your makeup, hair dressings and the kimono. Does it take a long time to take the make up off? How long does it take the color out of your hair too? You look like an authentic geisha. It was so cool to see people taking pictures. I would love to go to Japan just to take part in dressing up and enjoying the tradition and beauty of Japan.
Very interesting! I know it’s uncomfortable. That outfit weighs a lot and the obi is meant to be like a corset. That’s why maiko-san and geiko-san take smaller steps (the kimono restricts your gait). And generally walk a bit more slowly.
@@Oshidorinohinaobviously when you’re rushing from appt to appt, you walk faster. But if you’ve ever worn a kimono and know actual kimono manners, you are supposed to walk a bit slower with your thighs together and back straight. I know what I’m talking about.
I don’t have the thin body for this, but this is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I do traditional stuff with my personal kimonos. This is so wonderful to see.
Very cool...Hopefully the stylist has protege to pass on her knowledge and skill to preseve this. EDIT: You're very brave for going to the temple in public. I could tell you were nervous
Well I just want to be honest with you … YOU REALLY DO LOOK LIKE A MAIKO!! A pretty and beautiful one!😊 you ate and slayed. Also since you literally looked like a real maiko maybe that’s actually why they started to take pictures of you😲
You looked absolutely lovely! Very elegant. I did keep thinking, that all that fabric would be heavy and hot. But you looked calm, cool and collected 🙏. What an experience to have 🤗!
You actually have a Maiko uniform... The difference is, Maiko have a red collar, while Geiko/Geisha have a white collar... Maiko usually have one lip painted when it's their first year, and both lips after one year, Geiko/Geisha usually are around 20 or older when they become one, Shikomi (an apprentice of the arts) are usually 70 pounds because all the ACTUAL accesories can weigh up to/more/less (than) 10kg. You do look stunning though! Geisha/Geiko also usually don't have the Kanzashi, they have more sophisticated looks (Kanzashi is the hair accessories). I am quite experienced and am trying to become a Shikomi at the moment, if you have any questions feel free to ask! ^^
i wish in Chile we could found this beautiful tradition too but here we can't even found a kimono 😭 I love so much the culture of Japan, i'm learning japanese and my big dream is travel to Japan 😍
You are very beautiful to begin with and after the transformation you are a work of art as you are looking totally like a Japanese Geisha and walking like one also.
I love how the Japanese culture are happy when people want to wear their traditions, instead of screaming cultural appropriation they see it as a form of flattery. This is a beautiful way of thinking. Copy is the highest form of flattery.
Yeah, ikr, I think it’s because they know that just because you dress up that way doesn’t make you the real deal, so it’s fine
You’ll be suprised, but that’s actually the standard outside America.

You look so lovely! 🥰 That make-up girl was also very beautiful!!🥰🥰
That is amazing! The amount of time and attention to traditional detail has really supprised me! Thanks for sharing. Beautiful
So much heartfelt time and energy. The beauty is so worth it.
I hope you get to try it one day. I heard it’s fun!
They have these types of " dress ups" in many many countries. One time I was dressed up as a Tribal Woman in Thailand and all the locals were laughing so hard and taking pics...I did not know which camera to look at. This one is probably expensive cause it took so much time.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley great idea they should cater to all colors of the world
@@jessyncust76 I'm not going to say "should", but it would be nice, lol.
Simply lovely!! The result and the full process. Thank you very much for sharing ❤
You looked beautiful! Thank you for being patient and respectful. You seemed to be enjoying it too! Hope all is well!
🇧🇷🇧🇷 Congratulations to this amazing japanese makeup artist for these both things: the make up and the person she is.🇧🇷🇧🇷
You look beautiful!
I love it! Thank you for this good video.
You look stunning. You pulled it off really well. Thank you!
着物を着こなしてる❤めっちゃ綺麗🥺❤
Wow. You looked absolutely beautiful as a maiko! I also loved where you took a stroll during the cherry blossom season. Do you remember the date that you did the makeover? I would love to try the makeover during the peak of the cherry blossom season in year 2020. 🙂
Selby Mason sorry for the late reply! But yes it was April 8-13 around those days ☺️
@@YocelinSheller atleast you replied some of YT dont even do that
You'll have to check the season updates since it usually changes every year
It makes me happy to see such a young women knowing how to put on a kimono
Amazing! I only meant to watch a min and I was glued the whole time!
Same!
And generally walk a bit more slowly.
no they walk faster actually. They don't walk slow. have you seen an actual maiko or geiko rush from appt to appt? they're very fast.
@@Oshidorinohinaobviously when you’re rushing from appt to appt, you walk faster. But if you’ve ever worn a kimono and know actual kimono manners, you are supposed to walk a bit slower with your thighs together and back straight. I know what I’m talking about.
That is the coolest use of colored hair spray ever!
You look gorgeous!!! I definitely want to try this experience too!
めっちゃ似合ってるし可愛い。
舞妓さん、芸妓さんは日本の宝これからも日本文化を継承していって欲しい
I don’t have the thin body for this, but this is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I do traditional stuff with my personal kimonos. This is so wonderful to see.
Gorgeous! The whole ensemble looks so vibrant and luxurious.
Sakura (Cherry blossoms) have already bloomed in Tokyo this year.
@Sakura さん Japan waits you . And your name is kawaii .

Beauty, poetry, art, elegance.
In one word: Wonderful !
Thanks for sharing 🤗
You looked beautiful. I loved all of your costume color choices and the hair accessories were the icing on the cake.
Sandra Signorelli Thank you 🌸
Those kimonos made my heart flutter! What beauty and grace
I would SOOO do that!! You looked so beautiful. What an experience. Thanks for posting your video.
Moontinkle Productions Thank you very much! 💕 You totally should !
Wow!!! a lot of work goes into this the end result is very pretty and elegant So beautiful.
Also since you literally looked like a real maiko maybe that’s actually why they started to take pictures of you😲
わあ!外国人さんだったんですね⁈立ち振る舞いや所作がそれっぽくてわかんなかった笑
Beautiful! I was in love with the first kimono, they salmon and black one
Ey!!! Without lashesh extensions you look younger! Really, baby face. More pretty without extensions 😍☺️ A big huge from Spain 👋
I ❤ love the red eyeshadow!
oh, the makeup artist is soooo nice😍 And you look amazing😌
You look stunning! What an awesome experience. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Miriam Imperial Thank you beautiful 💕
I would feel like a princess in a fairytale
You looked gorgeous! Thankyou for sharing!
Thank you so much!!☀️
She looks simply lovely.
Beautiful traditional craft...loved this video.💞🥰 Btw I'm glad you were able to walk in those wooden shoes👍.
Thank you for the support 💗 and so much respect for them ! They were so wonderful trying to teach me 😂
@@YocelinSheller
Subbed👍💐
i wish in Chile we could found this beautiful tradition too but here we can't even found a kimono 😭
I love so much the culture of Japan, i'm learning japanese and my big dream is travel to Japan 😍
the way the geisha walks with small steps, not rushing to look graceful.
The sound of her walking due to the wooden shoes sounds similar to someone munching on chips lol
Thats exactly what I thought😂😂
You are very beautiful to begin with and after the transformation you are a work of art as you are looking totally like a Japanese Geisha and walking like one also.
