I see people ask that question under so many videos and I have to wonder why, more so, that people keep asking it. Those people are likely never going to answer you or give you their reason why. Was in Kyoto a few days during 2015 Gion Matsuri ... same days as a nice, soaked and windy typhoon ... I was excited to be there for the matsuri but could only follow a few mikoshi while fighting against the wind and the rain :') I wish I could see it again in better conditions !
There actually Okiya that allow foreigners to become Geiko. Just much more effort and time needed to be spent. specially when you are on the older side lol.
@Jack Snow A Miko is a shrine priestess or shaman. Not a Maiko apprentice Geisha. Theirs jobs consists in keeping the Shinto shrine temples, prepare the ceremonies with dances and songs devoting to a spiritual life.
I love the Gion Matsuri so much! Every year I go to Japan and it's during summer break and I go to school during the summer in Kyoto so we almost always go to the Gion Matsuri and there is SO much people and SO many good food but I've never seen a Gion Matsuri like this

They're very grateful, people have to realize that their festivals are steeped in their ancient culture.
