      I think bcoz the fuel system you not really through out checked, if you keep doing starting like that, that only can damage your starter unit instead, the best ways is back to the basic by checking the compressor power first then the most important thing is the fuel pump effiencies since you still using original tank which not clean bcoz of long layoff.

    TIP for today.....REMOVE THE 13mm behind the distributor this will keep the timing close to stock (remove distributor with bracket in place) DONT REMOVE THE 10mm then your timing will be off. I remove the distributor all the time to put points in that way. Much easier.

    Dude, when cranking these old engines, please help them with some throttle!! For some reason many of y'all in the US will crank engines til the next century and would never touch the throttle, and it drives me crazy hahahaha
    I know it's an engine that sat for a long time and that heavy acceleration might represent premature wear, but c'mon, you're just helping the engine a bit to get started and then you just keep it from revving up high.

    • @5150mxVW
      @5150mxVW  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and what would be your reasoning for giving it throttle ?

    • @Mike-tv9rk
      @Mike-tv9rk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      When it starts to catch just give it a bit of throttle and see what happens! It cant hurt. Its how we always used to get our cars going before computers.

      @@5150mxVW The accelerator pump would give it a shot of fuel. Does it have fresh fuel? A choke? Firing order right? A friend has 3 of these that look almost new. They came from out west and never had any rust any where. I have one stored here in my shop and it's a show type sand runner. It has a Porsche engine hanging out the back. Roll bars, large tires, dual shocks each wheel, turning brakes, dual fuel tanks and batteries. It's had a lot of cash thrown at it. Problem is, no title and no Vin #.

    I see my young self in Josh, when my dad taught me what he called a ‘jack knife tuneup,’ which entailed scraping the points, rotor and cap with his trusty jack knife and checking the cap for (‘crud and corruption’) corrosion at the wires. Which was 50-plus years ago. Love the determination.

    I bought a 1973 Thing in 1974, drove as my everyday car for 12 years, redid rocker panels at 100,000 miles , running gear was never out of the car. Mine had the fiberglass hardtop and was retired at 140,000 miles due to rust , still had all original running gear and was 100% reliable. Only complaint was lack of heat in winter , at over 50 mph the side windows would flap open and the gas heater just couldn’t keep up. 👍😄🎩

    Hey, the engine doesn't sound that bad to me. The automatic start consists of a bimetal spring, which is heated by a coil as soon as the ignition is on. That means after a few minutes the choke flap opens whether the engine is on or not. You can still use the starter for hours. In addition, you always have to give it a little gas to start it. So when stationary it won't start when it's cold. So turn off the ignition, wait 10 minutes, accelerate several times. Then some fuel is injected into the intake manifold. If you didn't give it gas before starting, the choke flap is open when you start it and it won't start. So the choke closes due to the gas pressure and then remains closed until the bimetal is hot. This is quite normal for a Beetle engine when it is in good condition.

      Tip: Spark plug gap should be inversely related to compression, so if you an engine that won't fire due to low compression like that, try a really big spark plug gap like .050" though if the internal insulator is fouling, do the opposite. Try a really small spark plug gap like .015". You can even try combinations and hope it starts on some cylinders and the rest chime in later. Also get the "hottest" plugs you can find. that is, the plugs with the tallest internal insulator towers that are most resistant to allowing the spark to short out through the dirt on the internal insulator tower. They are not a threat to a worn out engine, but if you are worried about hot plugs, you can always switch back to regular plugs once you get it running.

    Love the VW Thing, I remember my father almost bought one but instead kept his 66 Bug. Would have been a lot of fun during the summer at the Jersey shore.

    With a little planning ahead, you could have had some basic tools, like what VW supplies with the car. Clean & gap the plugs, a little oil in the cylinders, fresh points / condenser.... and it would have started in less time than you spent here! That said: any time I pull a distributor I scribe a mark where it meets the hold-down bracket, and that's my starting point for sticking it back in. You can also eyeball the TDC mark on the pulley and line up to the #1 mark on the distributor rim. BTW, you have probably figured out there's an odd noise in there. From where I sit it might be acorns in the cooling fan. Take the belt off and give it a turn by hand to confirm. Edited to add: happy birthday!

      hey 53 , I usually do a much more thorough pre start checklist ..oil , valves, lube cylinders etc ....but not on this , i wasn't digging all the mouse nest / crap out of the plug holes and i wasn't dragging it to the shop ....I always pull the dizz at tdc , and put it back tdc no biggie ...I could of static timed it as well but it's really not that hard to get these to fire and run 1/2 ass ....just this one lol. Good tip on the belt , thank you. Just a vid to have a little fun :)

      @@5150mxVW ... yeah fun, but the frustration level was high watching you go through those motions. I know you are not all that far away from me so maybe a road trip could be in the works when the weather breaks. I'm about 10 miles south of Danbury.
