I love Chester. I'm especially touched by the dignity with which he references the fall out that he and Phil had - most bands take to making acrimonious comments and the whole thing becomes a slanging match. It worried me, though, when Chester said that Phil isn't the kind of person that you can go back to, leaving Chester to wait and see if Phil will make the move to re-connect before it's too late.
How lovely it would be if Phil's answer to that was to turn up on the front row at one of Utopia's gigs. No words needing to be spoken, just that simple act would mend all bridges.

I remember hearing rumblings that something happened between them, but it's mostly been a mystery. They were together and tight for so long that whatever happened was probably like a marriage busting up. Phil has a pretty passionate personality and might have formed a overreacting grudge to it. Chester is such a class act, he won't hash out details to the public. Hopefully the bury the hatchet before its too late

I was a kid in the 80s when I got my first album- Invisible Touch. My next purchase was Genesis Live at Wembley. Chester blew me away. A few years later Im learning drums with the school band. My band teacher hears me talking about the drum duet, Los Endos, and Chester. A few days later he hands me a piece of paper that says:
    Dear Josh,
Practice Practice Practice Practice Practice Practice
    Etc.
    With love,
    Chester Thompson
Thank you, Chester. I took your advice and Im still playing today thanks to your inspiration!

It's very sad to hear Chester and Phil do not speaking to each other for 13 years! I know the problems were born because Phil wasn't happy with how Chester sounded on the Going back tour. Even Phil wasn't at his best at that moment, between personal problems and alcoholism. Yet they were friends before, and together they did great things musically. I really hope they can get back together.

The points he made 32:05 to 33:05 about not thinking about anything while drumming is simple and profound. He's really engaging in meditation while outwardly playing drums. For example, there's a video on TH-cam titled "Chester Thompson Drum Cam," on Take Me Home, live from 1990 (red t-shirt). When I first watched that video, I personally felt a sense of meditative calmness while watching Chester's intently focused on driving that song home.

What a legend! With all due respect to Nic Collins, who has truly inherited his father’s talent and did a fantastic job throughout the final Genesis tour, he will never be able to reach Chesters level of feel and originality, and that is an undeniable fact!! As a respectful gesture
to Chester, Phil, Tony and Mike should have brought him in for a drum duet-intermezzo at some point during the final concerts! ~ these iconic duets/double drums performances Phil and Chester executed in some incarnation at every concert through the years, were always a very anticipated part of the gigs💪 ~ well, to late to do anything about that now🤷

I met Dave Bascombe (producer for Tears F/Fears, Goldfrapp blah blah) a couple of times at The Townhouse...my (indie) band mates had told him I was a fan before i'd gotten to the studio - affectionately tongue in cheek - as it wasn't 'cool' being a Genesis geek in an Indie Band during the late 90s😏...Bascombe was tape op on Duke. He took me to the exact spot in the room that used to be the drum booth where Intruder and In The Air was recorded, nice👌 And told that same fact Chester cited, that at the end of all tracking before mixing started, Phil went back in the booth and tracked every drum part again in single takes...bang bang bang ..done. He said it was astonishing the level of musicianship, top session player accuracy. I wish this interview could be sent to Phils management in-box...he needs to wake up , get over himself and make up with Chester. I worshipped Phil since age 7 (now 50) and a few years back when he was sat in the chair on his last solo tour I felt compelled to write to him and tell him how much he'd meant to me growing up, not just musically but as a kind of mentor/guide/father figure😳 (embarrasing eh). I sent him a couple of cds of albums i'd played on by artists I thought he might like. For sure he obvs got thousands of letters/cds like this over the years so I never expected to hear anything back (unlike when he wrote to me age 15 after I'd asked if i could do school work experience at The Farm). Anyway, I felt a bit stupid when I received the CDs back in the post with a letter from the management saying something like 'Phil thought you should keep the cds'😂...I mean , just say nothing, bin them if you like, but don't send them back to me! I was a bit sad for a while. Reminded me of the time age 19 when Columbia Records left a message asking to call them back. Excitedly I rang expecting to hear how much they liked the 4 track cassette demo of our band I'd sent them. No, they had lost the return address to send the tape back to me🙄🤣.

Interesting about the fall out, thanks for asking it. Such a waste of a long friendship over what I believe was an issue during one or two performances. Don’t get me wrong, Im a lifelong fan of everything Phil has done really, but I will say its lucky that Mike and Tony didnt have the same attitude towards phil on the last tour with his performance, constantly losing his place and getting lyrics wrong night after night. Its human nature to have an off night.

@@EverythingPhilCollins well that’s definitely worth a watch then, simply rumours aren’t useful.

Something magical happens when those two play together. Instinctive and powerful. And as the drummer as Part of Genesis he really was, as Phil described him on stage, the backbone of genesis live. And if one ever wants to see just how hard he worked every night at parts of Phil’s solo band, look no further than the drum cam footage from the ‘Serious Tour’, phenomenal!!

Thanks for this amazing interview! You did a really good job! :)
I didn't get that part from Chester and Phil falling apart. My last update was that Chester wasn't playing along side Phil on his last tour(s) because of Chester was retired/busy.
I never noticed that something happened between them. Does anybody know what exactly happened between Chester and Phil? Would be great if anybody could explain it or has a video where one of them talks about it. Thanks lads! :D

The actual details are private, but it was something to do with drumming around the “Going Back” days…

Many thanks for this interview....I have been listening to a lot of Genesis lately and have thoughts on Chester. IMO, the 3 band principals were terribly short sighted not making Chester a full band member.
I realize Phil does double takes of drum tracks in the studio, but critical listening of live performances clearly shows the superiority of the live versions with both drummers going at it and pushing each other’s sonic potential in real time.
See any live version (exception: The Last Domino? Tour) of Second Home by the Sea for example. The power and sheer dominance of the live performance is something that is missing on the studio version.
This is confirmed by viewing and listening the same song on “The Last Domino? Tour” in which Chester is replaced by Phil’s son. As talented as the junior Collins is, his drumming, backed up by a tour percussionist, is no match for the combination of Thompson and Collins together….no match at all. No reply at all either,,,,,such a shame.

Dude, let the man talk. You don't have to react audibly to everything he says.
