I appreciate how you make your video in the style that the camera is intended for. For example, you did your R5C review in true "cinematic" fashion -- a well planned, well budgeted shoot. You did your Z30 and X-S20 videos in a vlog style. And I appreciate all your other technical reviews as well, especially the fuji film simulation one. That was educational! Thanks Dale!

I always enjoy your informative and upbeat videos! When I heard that the 8mm lens was coming, I didn't think much either way. Seeing the images though, I can see how useful and fun it would be. It's a great addition to the lineup.
Thanks for the comment Richard! Yes, ultra wides are my absolute favourite. You can tell such interesting stories with them - both photo and video. It also helps people break out of that world that "bokeh is everything." Not everything requires a shallow DOF. My opinion, at least. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have the X-S10 as a “play” camera and it’s great. I use it when I don’t want to drag out the heavy cams and lenses. The body design is great on the S10 so I’m pleased they didn’t change it just for the sake of a new model.

I bought the X-S20 yesterday :) but I can't say I'm super impressed with the video AF on the X-S20, I'm looking at the Sony A6700 as well. The Fuji has 6.2k open gate, 2 more stops of IBIS, better webcam with film sims, no overheating in video, better battery, better screen, joystick, fuji colours, some unique great lenses - so that's a lot to love! - but if you're not in focus, what's the point?
I like that Sony have bulletproof autofocus no matter what, making it so easy for filming myself, focus breathing correction (those F2 Fuji primes have terrible focus breathing!), 120fps 4k is cool, water resistance, higher ISO range (better in low light?), the same lenses are normally 20-30% cheaper for Sony. I'm very torn if to keep the X-S20 or to get the Sony! - Any thoughts?

I have a Nikon DSLR and I am considering whether to jump to Fuji (and this cam is really atractive fo rme) or wait for a hypothetical Z6III. What do you recommend? (I am stills photographer but would love to start with video if its so easy to get good colors and looks)

I recommend any camera and lens system you can afford. There are far too many options and unless we sat down for a few hours and spoke about all the ways you intend to use your camera and your style of photography, anything I recommend would be purely a guess, and likely a biased one at that. If you wait for a holy grail camera, you'll wait forever. Buy a camera that feels good in your hands, one that is designed in the way that makes sense to you, and most importantly the one you can afford. Everything else is rather unimportant in my opinion. You can take a great photo with any modern camera.

Thanks for the comment! There is a very small crop of 1.18x at 4K 60 according to Fujifilm documents, but I didn’t notice. The 60p example I show does show the pigeon larger in the X-S20 but he was closer. The frame overall is relatively the same. Either way, it’s always 10 bit, including 6.2K (tho 8 bit is still an option if you need to save space).

How's the dual gain iso using flog 2 at the second iso 3200 or is it like the xt4 at iso 2000
Been itching to know if it has that feature like the xh2s
Can be a really handy in low light situations
The dual gain seems to happen at a relatively low ISO level - so I'm not entirely certain that it's designed in the same way, or with the same intent as with other cameras that market their dual gain (sony, BMD, etc). The Fujifilm rep was clear with me that the X-H2 series camera's ISO performance is not dual gain based. So, even though empirical testing has revealed a gain shift at certain ISOs, I don't know at this moment if it's something that has any real practical application. I'm open to being wrong here - so anyone with more info/examples are invited to chime in. On my own X-H2s, I've not noticed any ISO levels that perform better than others - and I've been able to ascertain a suitably clean image quite high up the scale, especially if you are over exposing your Flog2 by a stop or two (without clipping).

Been seeing some tests regarding the xh2s dual gain iso
Flog 2 when graded at iso 3200 looked cleaner than iso 2000 when they did a 200% zoom in post side by side clips and I can confirm that same feature in my Fujifilm xt4 when using flog 4.2.0 10bit internal recording all intra and long GOP at iso 2000.
I was curious if the new procesor would allow older xtrans sensor to also have this feature (Xs-20)
It would certainly make it an even more attractive budget for low budget shooters like me.
The feature practically made an xh2s with external recorder go toe to toe with the black magic 6k pro given that it has a capable focus system ibis and easier to rig body plus evf and great photo capabilities
Been eying the xh2s for a while but this Xs-20 might also be a great bcam to accompany that camera without breaking the bank

Thanks for the insight! Do you have a link to these tests btw? I could also test this myself I suppose. I think the reason I would never have noticed is because the base ISO is already 1250, so unlikely I would ever go up to 2000 (not really enough of a difference), whereas 3200 is a logical next step up (effectively one stop). And this aligns with the data i've seen. Most dual gains happen at least two or more stops up. Certainly there is an advantage to a dual gain at any point - but having the dual gain at the next stop up seems like it's more a function of something esoteric in the processor, and less a direct intent. This is all conjecture on my part, of course. This is not the first time I've had this conversation, btw. A cinematographer friend noticed a dual gain pattern with his X-T4 as well. What I find most interesting is that Fujifilm across the board makes no claims to comments to this. Pair that with the unusual gain interval, and it could lead one to believe that's function (while very much real!) is not intended as with other cameras. This will definitely be something I'll discuss with FF in the future.
As for the X-S20, hard to say - not something I tested, obviously. I actually shied away from those kind of tests because the camera was very much pre-production. Usually there are a few notable firmware updates before the camera ships. It's also a question of where dual gain happens. Is it sensor side or processor side? Because in the s20 you have a mix. New sensor, old processor. Maybe someone will test in the coming months.
Would love to see a test regarding the dual gain iso hidden feature since it's something of a unicorn sighting when it comes to the Fuji brand
Iso 3200 is a very good low light entry iso and apparently it's only visible after the grade and that i can confirm with the xt3 and xt4.
We actually really rely on them plus the use of fast 1.4 primes paired with variable ND filters

What do you think about the XS20 IBIS (for video)?
I have mixed feelings about IBIS in general (so I'm probably not a good person to ask). Good for some things, not others. It's no better or worse than any other camera released in the last couple of years.

Nice job with this review. I know its near-blasphemy, but i’m interested in this for stills photography due to the combination of IBIS, low weight and the Fuji mount that gives us access to great lens options.
This is an absolutely AMAZING stills camera. In fact, I would argue it's even better at stills. There is very little throttling of the stills (other than continuous speed and e. front curtain), compared to video. It's also easier to make a high performing stills camera than a video one. I highly encourage photographers to consider this camera.
@@vistek I’m so very tempted. I have an x-t30 and x-t4, have no knowledge of video however I don’t use the x-t4 much. I’m tempted to trade it for this as I like the size and weight for travel while using existing lenses and would like to be able to do beginners video on an upcoming holiday. Such a dilemma
Fuji, please make an XT5S. With this sensor and features in an XT5 body. I don’t want 40mp or the XH2S.
Why would you not want 40 mp? I mean yes, footage size is huge. But I would kill to have so much sharpness and the ability to crop as much as you want in Post edit and still have amazing quality 🤩
so if so little has changed, why wasn't this just a firmware update for the x-s10?
Because firmware can't magically upgrade a processor. Putting this firmware in the S10 would probably melt the camera.

The battery is much bigger too. You'll get double the shots with this battery.

Hi jtoquendo. For those familiar with Fujifilm cameras, they will know precisely the situation with IBIS, thus I felt like it was redundant information that we've covered in our other videos. It's the same IBIS that you find in the X-H2 series cameras. So, if you really want to see, you can revisit some of those reviews. I recognize the desire to see specific features of interest in our review videos. I attempt to be as comprehensive as possible, but there are limits due to elements like target run time, or skipping over features that are unchanged from previous models in order to favour a focus on what's new.
I've also always been vocal about not using any one review as the final word. Every person uses a camera differently - and so other reviewers are going to discuss other things. Some of my favourite reviewers that I think contrast my messaging well are Gerald Undone, Phillip Bloom, Chris & Jordan of Peta Pixel.

but does it overheat?
I could net get it to overheat during my time with the camera. They do however allow for the addition of the same fan that was created for the X-H2 model cameras.
As someone ie the person who made this video in fact YOU are a content creator, YOU made the content in this video you where not a hired actor etc.
Cameras are getting cheap enough but good enough to make high quality videas even 4k videas yes Hollywood studios can make at least 8k now if not 16k and above but 4k is the max most peoples TV or monitor can display.
The camera is great, but how can they make a 8-16mm zoom lens with constant f/2,8 and the 8mm prime is "just" f/3,5? I can't get my head around that.
Thanks for the comment Karacop78. There is quite a lot that goes into lens design, as you can imagine. With lenses, and optics in general, there is no "free lunch." You're going to gain one thing to lose another. I can't say what you lose from a 2.8 8-16 vs the 3.5 8, but if I had to guess it would be barrel distortion and sharpness. Just a guess. If you want a lens that has a wide aperture, super wide, and want no distortion or softness, then I would be prepared to empty a good portion of you life savings.

Ok but still, 99,9% of prime lenses have simpler optical schemes than zooms with less pieces of glass, which gives the manufacturers the possibility for wider apertures and less softness or distortions.
Still, no sense. I mean, this one is not even the same maximum f stop with the equivalent zoom, it is less, f3,5.
Why Fujifilm kills its own high-end product? And makes customers happy!
Is there AF performance improvement over H2S or T5?
I don’t think this kills the higher end products at all. If anything, it accesses a demographic not served with their current line. Fujifilm is not the only one doing this. Almost every brand is doing this. Nikon’s new Z8 is a great example of this. It’s all very strategic on the part of the brands. I own an X-H2s, and there is no way I would buy the X-S20 in place of the H2s, because of what I need my H2s to do, plus a much beefier body which I need for the work I do. In short, each model serves a unique demographic/user type. It’s easy (relatively) for the brand to port of new tech into further camera models because the R&D has generally been recouped.
In terms of performance, I can’t say. I never tested. I had a pre production version, and as such firmware wasn’t final. So testing this feature wouldn’t be fair. However, anecdotally I had zero issues with AF. It worked like a charm every time. No complaints.

Just a commercial.
I mean, on one hand you're not wrong. It is my job to highlight products that we sell in order to, well ... sell them. However, I firmly stand by what I say in my videos. I am never hyperbolic about a product's virtues or limitations. If you think that I've been unfairly kind to this product, it's only because - and lets be honest here - there aren't really any bad cameras any more. To quote a famous comedian, "everything is amazing, and no one is happy." If you think I should have trash talked this product more, I'd like to know in what way should I have been more "honest"? From what I see - and based on the price of this camera, there leaves little to complain about. So, if you think that equates me to a shleppy used car sales man, well then guilty as charged.
