    I agree with what Maria said. I was just reading yesterday some articles from ballet dancers who recommend cross training. Ballerinas suffer from muscle fatigue because ballet is not enough. They recommend combining ballet training with other activities: weight lifting, pilates, running, cardio, yoga, etc... They said that as ballet dancers we should ease into these activities, for example, on the first day, we'd speed walk on a treadmill for 2 mins, then gradually increase speed and run for 1 min, then decrease speed and speed walk for 2 mins then repeat it again. The whole exercise should extend up to 20mins by the end of the week and you just maintain it there. It helps with the heart and lungs so that dancers aren't panting and breathing like a dying old person. Weight lifting specifically deadweights and squats strengthen the quads which improves jumps and lightens the load on calves and feet,

      Weightlifting also helps strengthen bones and helps prevent bone loss

      And ballet dancers do all of that ;)

      Dancers used to think running was bad for dancing. This was recent I dated a pro ballet dancer. She danced for Houston ballet. It's crazy how even in the 2000s this kind of misinformation was so widely accepted in the industry
      Edit: but technically running is a high impact exercise so if longevity is the end goal, supplementing ballet with running probably isn't ideal for the knees long term.

      Where in the video does she speak about cross training?

    • @katherinedobias7499
      @katherinedobias7499 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Oliveh7093 In the daily pain section around 8:00 she mentions incorporating pilates into her routine, warming up (cardio, abs) and working on every joint in your body. She doesn't say the words cross training, but when you incorporate other activities into your routine to work out the entire muscle as a whole and not just in ballet, then it's known as cross training. There's another section at 17:54 where she mentions how we can do ballet all day long but can't even run for 30mins, and how some of the muscles aren't being used and others are being overused. When you take that information and combine it with what other dancers are saying online, you realize that cross training will help activate all parts of the muscles than ballet does. For example, right now, I have pilates, yoga, physical therapy, warm ups, cardio, weight lifting, and gymnastics incorporated into my ballet training. To take the load off my feet and ankles, I need to strengthen my quads via deadweights and lifts. This strengthens the entire leg and allows me to jump higher and prevent less foot and ankle injuries.

    oh I can relate so much to being so so tired after sitting at school! I'm not a ballet dancer but a figure skater, but I could train for long hours and still be less tired than if I sat at school. :-)

    As a kid, around 8 I think? I quit ballet because of the pain! I thought “this isn’t fun at all!” And I quit. I was good, a natural they said, but I thought they were crazy! I went to tap, jazz, gymnastics and track and field. I was great at those, and had a blast until I graduated from high school. I commend all ballerinas! What you have to put your body thru was excruciating…at least to me. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼♥️

    Seriously protein is great, but I would highly recommend bone broth and cartilage for your joints, obviously they get stressed. I have always craved cartilage, and riding long days all my life has been stressful with many injuries, but my chiropractor is impressed with how well my joints have held up.

    Thank you so much for posting this video, Maria. I really love listening to you talking like this. I have never studied ballet myself, but have always LOVED watching it and learning about it. I love that your comments and answers to the questions people have submitted are so thoughtful, honest and humble. Your English is incredibly good. Just one thing: I did find the background music today a little intrusive. I wanted to be able to listen and think about what you were saying, but kept getting distracted! Maybe just turning down the volume a little, or playing something less jaunty. Please keep the videos coming. I really hope I'll be able to watch you dancing in a live performance one day.

    Apart from her perfect ballet body and her talent, i have a lot in common with Maria. this was so relatable! I wore serenade strong for a long time. i use bandaid to prevent blisters on the toes. i have dark hair that won't grow longer than shoulder length. we have rehearsals that are announced the day before (and mind you we are recreational dancers with fulltime jobs and families.. ) and that keep going for much longer than planned. i keep tabs on my pointe shoes how much life i can stil get out of each pair. i also love your philosophy and your approach to teaching.
    oh, also i have a younger sister who dances too :-) she is my best ballet friend!

    re: toenails for anyone interested.
    you can get gel tubes for a single toe which can help with preventing bruised toenails. and especially if you have a longer second toe, it will make your big toe a little longer and able to share the pressure.

    The diet to keep the weight for presentations maybe could be more similar with the diets of combat sports, where we have to remain strong but keep the weight for our category, maybe you could take a look. 😊

    The 'bone cracking' is likely cartilage. How to keep the cartilage, the joints, fluid, lubricated, healthy... advanced nutrition can make this possible. It is a real challenge for sure. Absolutely love your TH-cam presentations.

    • @amymariekeller
      @amymariekeller ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, as someone with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome who dances, the bone crackling sound for many of us is literally the sounds of us resetting a dislocated or subluxed joint. Trust me when I say that it has NOTHING to do with my diet. What does help is strengthening the muscles around the joints that go out the most. :)

    • @drh3rd
      @drh3rd ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amymariekeller 100% agree. Many reasons for the crackling sound. I didn't suggest diet contributed to this tho. I suggested that nutrition could help tho. Having danced (ballet, Broadway) and successfully tore myself mightily up, plus my missus has 6 total joint replacements (pro singer, not dancer, different contributing circumstances to why), we've faced straight concepts, tools, etc.. of nutrition to help protect and in some ways restore what's there, which we have been able to do to an extent. Diet did not contribute to the torn up ligaments, cartilage, connective tissue, blah blah blah. Believe me when I say I've had a bible of torn everything, broken toes, etc etc. Some of this was due to poor initial training which was corrected thank god by some of my fav ballet masters. But not before, ugh... A serious injury was tearing my ACL, MCL and meniscus, and that was the worst, and best thing that ever happened. Rehab was learning, understanding exactly what you say... coordinating muscle structuring to aid in recovery and more so, compensation. So agree with ya. Anywayz...

    What is your opinion of the Cecchetti method? It would be great to see young dancers studying his 6 day program and using it in practice. They are said to reduce both injuries and the pain that every dancer goes through for the art. I'd love to hear your take on the traditional ways of working the body through a set cycle during the week, with variations of course!!

I think ballet is less dangerous than most of sports if you want to make a comparison. The way you explain every issue is very helpful and your English is very good and understandable.

      What a particular correction. But I don’t hear it. Her “ands” already sound pretty accent-less, they dont stick out at all (and after reading your comment I literally rewound the video to pay extra attention). I don’t think emphasizing the “d” would make it any better, as it sounds pretty native. If anything it would bring attention to that particular word. But yeah, I agree, her English and accent is amazing for a native Russian speaker, especially for one who hasn’t lived in an English speaking country.

    • @MishaSkripach
      @MishaSkripach ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roastedpepper I meant the opposite - NOT emphasizing D. Did you google translate? Or are you likely a Russian who for some reason wrote to me in Endlish ( starting your sentence in brackets with AND sounds VERY Russian of you, "particular correction" is also very strange and Russian-sounding).
