This is honestly one of the best first impressions video's that I've seen. Usually you receive little to no information about what the laptop is actually like - they tend to literally just be an unboxing video with some impressions on build quality but you went the extra length to give a solid first impression of all of the key aspects. I have now subscribed and am eagerly awaiting your review.

Great video. I appreciate all the work and quite possibly the money you have to spend to review all of these laptops. You're definitely on point, I don't understand why you can't have upgradable memory on the Alienware X series at least with the X15 last year and now with the X16 this year when the XPS line has upgradable memory. It seems to me like your paying a premium for the X series look and build as I feel the Alienware M series, especially the ones last year gave you more bang for the buck and better performance. The M series are a better value overall versus the X series.

To be honest x16 is a x15 successor, the on board ram is a hint for the conjecture. I quite don’t understand why Dell decide to not release the X18 this year. But x series won’t disappoint the Alienware lover in any ways. Pretty impressive new laptop, but….. I still wish Dell could quietly announce there will be a X18 or area 51m r3 later this year. I want to know your long term review please , i have alienware 15r4 from about 4 years but it has been failing lately with too many issues such as hard drive failure , battery failure and trackpad failure , sometimes it beeps and refuses to turn on , so i've been thinking of an upgrade , so is the x16 worth it ? Does it have any problems so far ?

Agree with strange lid colour, nice to hear the speakers improved. But show stopper for me is the hk cpu, competition provide hx and with these new gpus I feel we need powerful CPUs to match performance. Great to hear they are running gpu at 165 watts. I’m actually not to bothered about the soldered memory as it’s running at 6000 … I wonder if a x18 is in the works
God I really hope so. I am looking forward to the m18 tomorrow but I know I would take an x18 over an m18 any day! And agreed, the laptop needs an Hx not hk, it easily copes with 130w which is more than the blade 16 so imagine those extra cores and an undervolt!
See I think the speakers gotta be the best dell has for that price (they make some of the best sounding laptops) but also I feel like dell uses alien ware to make their shit like origin PC prices which is insane to me. That being said seems like this thing is kinda a beast and I mean it is better than both my laptops. That being said I feel like if you want your money worth and better build quality, msi, asus, shit even acer has some now that are nice and imo more worth it cause they pack similar if not better specs and at least 2k cheaper

@@MashITTech most welcome. Yes i have calibrated it using "Windows hdr calibration" and wow i have a great hdr experience for both gaming and HDR movies. I don't know why many reviews calls it has bad hdr.
I don't know much about brightness in this monitor but HDR is super impressive even it is a nano ips.
I think may be those reviewers got bad panel or they haven't calibrated HDR.

My X16 was scheduled for shipping April 17, but finished build yesterday and is scheduled for Monday now!
I would guess for the ram it might be the speed that makes it soldered? Im not really sure but last year it was 5600 that has to be soldered on to reach the speed, maybe this 6000MHz is also the same case?

Is there any downside on having onboard RAM? From My understanding is impossible to upgrade and if they go bad the laptop is basically garbage is this right or am wrong?
i m using 17r4 already from 2016. best leptop i have ever seen i cant amagine this alienware. 5 tb memory i have got 32 gb gtx 1070 with tobi eye tracking thnk u dell thnk u alienware. i hope in the future again i can buy alienware from turkey :/ because today we cant buy last alienware leptop versions on turkey.
I'm expecting this x16 to be the perfect blend of the x15 and the x17. Maybe the refreshed version, next year, will get Dell's new CAMM memory modules and we'll get upgradable memory in this thin design.
Is that confirmed? Are we going to see Ram upgradable on this thin chassis. That would be great.
I am actually a little surprised we didn't see CAMM in these models TBH. I figured once approval was given for them to be used as a standard it was go time with them.

XTU is locked. I haven't tried undervolting the GPU yet. I have benchmarked the laptop in every profile and will try and show it all in the full review I am currently working on.

Dellxps 17 12700 or asus g14 6700s which is better for coding and high-end editing ..with better battery life....and if possible any other laptop suggestions...

- What is the noise (samples and dB values) under GPU load in different fan modes?

I still have my Alienware 17 R4. Pushing 7yrs, it has it's quirks but going strong. Thinking about a possible upgrade soon.

How does the size compare to the x15 r2? if you had the money and option between the x16 or x15 r2 which would you choose as i'm debating ordering this one or grabbing the 3070 ti r2 at my local best buy

My x16 is running great. Just a few initial hiccups coming out of the factory with the AWCC not working, but Dell Support diagnosed the problem with my OS Recovery image having the AWCC options disables under Services. Running in performance mode and the fans are so quiet, the temps are good, it feels premium, overall I really like it!
Same experience as me except I managed to fix awcc with a clean install. Also really impressed how well the profiles work and the performance despite being much quieter doesn’t score much less in benchmarks! I will cover that in more detail in the full review
What cpu and gpu temperatures do u get while gaming?

There wasn’t a 4090 version available. Only 13900hk with 4080 at the moment

They don’t make a Ryzen x15 so guess you are looking at an m15r7? If so x15 every time

I’m eagerly awaiting your full review of the X16, The lack of professional reviews and all the bad things I’ve heard about these new Alienware Laptops has honestly put me off buying one so it’ll be nice to finally see a reviewer put it through it’s paces.
Hoping for a Sunday release, we have been working hard at it for the last couple of days and just tidying it up now. What have you heard that’s been putting you off? I have enjoyed using the laptop with the only issues I have had are related to AWCC! Really hoped dell would have improved it with the new release but it’s as rubbish as ever 😢
@@MashITTech That’s good to hear, most of the bad thing’s I’ve been hearing have been about the M16/18 like at least 2 CPU cores instantly run at 100c in cinebench instead of gradually building up to that temperature, I saw one person on Reddit say that this could be a problem with not enough thermal past covering the CPU and that the heat sync might not be making proper contact, another thing I’ve heard about are that the BIOS is a bit buggy at the moment. I’ve seen a few different people on Reddit and TH-cam reporting the same things so its not just a single defective unit.
Yes, I have heard about the m16 and m18 too luckily I don't think either of mine are affected as although they do hit 100c during cinebench (as all Dell laptops do as dell allow them to boost as much as possible until it hits 100c) the scores I am getting looks about what I would expect for the number of cores and threads they have. My x16 has no thermal issues though and BIOS has been fine, only AWCC issues as it stupidly shipped with AWCC1 and crashed when it auto updated to V2 and took me ages to fix which I should not have to deal with on a £3500 machine :(
@@MashITTech Good to hear yours is ok except for ACC, your right this is unacceptable for such an expensive machine, also apparently there was a BIOS update for the M16/18 yesterday not sure what it does though.
Yes they unlocked the CPUs apparently but I haven’t tested! Thank god I hadn’t finished filming my m18 review as I was about to have a right rant at dell for not unlocking the Hx cpu 😂

@@MashITTech thats good I’ll look for it tomorrow then. As well the Alienware I’ve also been looking at the Razer Blade 18 but they seem to be having some problems with the screen flickering and image retention at the moment.
there was a BIOS released that should have fixed that. I will check in with other owners to see if it did? I had no such issue with the blade 16

Galaxy book 3 ultra is the most powerful
video and photo editing laptop ever made in such a thin and light chassis. It is way faster than m2 pro chip in video editing even on battery and extends its lead further while plugged in.

agreed. It is a nice looking panel with good colours but having measured it for the review, its only 325nits which when compared to the blade 16 at a similar price is really disappointing

IT boosted to upto 175w in benchmarks but I have been currently testing all the different profiles as they are all quite different now. Let me do some more gaming on the max profile and I will keep an eye on it and get back to you
@@MashITTech so I’m asking because my legion rtx4090 is not boosting passed 151 watts. My m18 arrives Monday however if these rtx4090 laptops are not boosting and maintaining say 165-170 watts I be sending them back and maybe getting the rtx4080. You don’t tend to see actual rtx4080 v rtx4090 benchmarks.
Well the good news is I can compare the m18 4090 to the x16 4080 which may help! Will also let you know how I get on gaming on max perf mode
Well I have this x16 already and have several videos up of it already if you want to come check them out.
Ok, spent more time gaming in performance mode whilst watching graphics card. It seems to sit between 160-165w when the game is at 100% use (so more demanding titles) so far only seen 175 in benchmarks
How the hell that Dell not make more color like dark black like m17?

Hi Dave! Can you check how new acc works after extended testing. Old was funny and I was forced to uninstall it on my M15 R5 because fans ware ramping up for no reason.

How much nits is the screen please sir can you clarify, cause for m series its underwhlming and competeition is too much ahead. Atleast 500 nits should be the norm for such an expensive device

I think the problem with the i9-13900hx is that doesn't support LPDDR ram. I suppose that's the reason why they choose HK model.

The m18 seems to struggle to keep the HX cool, so I doubt this machine would be able to even have a chance at it.
I think last year's alienware laptops look nicer.

It's nice the soft touch deck is gone but on the literal flipside, that two tone look looks cheap from my end. It looks like when you're painting a car per panel and stopped to take a break because the relatively matte Lunar Light next to a shinier silver looks like primer. 100% SRGB and color calibrated so it can't be my display. Couldn't it just be all silver?
I dont really get why they offer x16 and m16 ... what is the difference?
I will do a video showing the two soon as my m16 arrives tomorrow. But so far, x16 is more premium, better materials and slimmer but has locked cpu and soldered ram. M16 is bulkier, cheaper feeling but has socketed ram and an unlocked cpu. I am stocking up on coffee to try and cover all these as fast as I can and will try and get proper vs for you soon

@@MashITTech yea I have neck issues, and the monitors on these alienwares seem like they are higher up from the keyboard then most other laptops, was wondering if it’s at all uncomfortable typing and looking for long periods of time. I’m a game developer and might buy this but I work long sessions at a time
Ah I see, I was confused as most experts believe you should have the screen higher for better posture. But if you need yours lower then unfortunately this Alienware is like previous Alienwares and reasonably high but we have less bezel thanks to the 16:10

Hard to say yet. I love the razer blade cpu performance better and the razer form factor. I much prefer the feel of the x16, look of the x16 and the much better keyboard. I also love the fact the x16 palm rest stays cool to the touch when gaming. I will spend a solid week with the x16 so I can actually answer you better and I will also make an x16 vs blade 16 video too

Nope just an IPS. its a good IPS but I wish Alienware offered more options

@@MashITTech Mine has been super problematic. Idk how they made AWCC worse lol. Does your system allow you to adjust the GPU power limit? My bar is greyed out, and the OC settings i select won't stick even after I save them. Already about to send this thing back.
Yep, AWCC is still crap lol with less features now :) have a big rant in my full review. Try loading defaults in BIOS and check your OC setting as mine were initially greyed out when I updated the BIOS but this fixed the option to enable it but I must be honest I haven't bothered using it
I ended up getting it unlocked in afterburner. I actually solved almost all my issues by the default bios settings, and fresh installation to Windows 10. Just can't get with 11, even after tinkering and regedits. Can confirm there are no issues with 10.
so is this x16 replacing the x17 ?

@@MashITTech if tomorrow I’ll still be able to buy the razer blade 4090, since I’ve been seeing good results from many reviewers. You also mentioned about keeping the Razer Blade 16 yourself, so my mind leans toward Razer right now. It’s a matter of time before 4090 become unavailable.
OK, well I will give yo my thoughts. The Razer Blade is a much more compact chassis with much better port locations. It also have much better screen options, the IPS is much brighter and you have the mini LED option, the Alienware only has the IPS and I just measured it at 325nits. The Blade CPU is much more powerful and able to overclock, undervolt or adjust ,utlipliers, the alienware is locked down. The GPU runs at a slightly higher wattage on the alienware giving it slightly better cpu performance. Synapse although not amazing is 100x better than AWCC. So if prices are equal razer every time. If the X16 is over 500 cheaper than blade then its a harder choice. Hope this helps

A little update, so the configuration I wanted for RB 16 4090 mini LED was sold out, I bought myself RB 18 4080 instead, which I think is already decent and reviewers are saying the thermal is really great.
I do love Alienware’s aesthetic and the whole brand more than Razer but I think this year Alienware x16 has many minor issues that I can’t justify buying it yet eg. peripherals ( headphone jack at the back? ), can’t upgrade, can’t overlock, no alienware power button, poor brightness etc.
This will be my first Razer laptop, and maybe someday I will have my first Alienware.
A shame they stopped making the nebula red chasis. X17 looks like it could still hold up to this. Cant wait to see the m18
I always loved nebula and would choose that in a heart beat. Also can’t wait to start playing with the m18 and it’s unlocked chip!
@@MashITTech with the new G15's having so many color options, i think it was a missed opportunity for the Alienware laptops not having multiple color options. Stemming back to even the old Aurora/Area 51 era laptops/desktops that crazy nice paint and colorful lighting paired with gaming power plants was how they made it! I agree with ya both completely.
One of my all time favourite alienwares was an original m18x in nebula red. Loved that muscle car bulky look and metallic red finish

No way! I saw they released the g15 and g16 but because I blew our entire budget on the m16, m18 and x16 I didn’t take a proper look! Man, as soon as I get some more money in I will have to get one!

If Razer tech support actually existed in the UK, I would probably have bought one by now. The Razer seems to be the better performer, particularly with the ability to undervolt. I do wonder though how the apparent better thermals on the x16 would make a difference on say a full working day of 3d rendering/Twinmotion etc…
😩 im in the market of upgrading my 10 yr old laptop for something new and beefy, wanted to buy one of the x series of alienware but my pet peeve is regardless of size none of them have a numical keyboard on the side. Thats so dumb.

yes. hasn't been a good start from it as it crashed constantly for a while but now it is working its.....OK...🥲

I have this laptop, just a week but I've had a couple with AWCC and I've sent over 4 hours with Dell Techs in remote sessions trying to get AWCC and Thunderbolt ports to work and I have a defect on the USB-C ports that I might try to get Dell to replace. The second tech said I might need a motherboard replacement. Even with all this - I like this laptop, gaming is amazing and the fan noise is low.
I had massive trouble with AWCC too. Mine came with the old version and crashed upgrading to new version. Took a fresh install and fresh AWCC install to sort it! Nice work Dell 🤣
@@MashITTech Dell had me create a Dell Recovery USB, Since the BIOS Recovery failed, then USB failed twice in between steps 4 and 5 and then I created a fresh USB install of Windows 11 from Microsoft for it to work, then I updated the bios and then installed AWCC - full installer and it worked. The other thing I'm having trouble with is getting the WD22TBS Dell Docking Station to work. It worked on Dell's image but not on the fresh install. I've tried Intel Thunderbolt drivers from X17/X15/M16/M18 and a few others but nothing has worked, Dell has not updated the X16 with those drivers either. It's been a saga for my first Alienware and a have a small defect on the back where the two, USB-C ports are. I have a small bulge there, where the IO sticks out past the LED light ring, like a small screw might have been back there or the IO panel was curved - either way I have been thinking about getting Dell to replace it. It's a lot of money to spend and not have it look correct.

The trouble with them chasing thinness means we loose out on storage in the process! I used to love the days we had an hdd bay plus about 3 m.2 slots 😢
Hiya Dave, so pleased you're going to be reviewing the glorious Alienware m18. I've been waiting for a decent screen size lappy with numberpad for years and thankfully they're here. The Dell website has a whole bunch of questions about this beautiful beast and I have a few and I'd be enormously grateful if you could address them....
* Can sleep mode s3 be enabled in BIOS settings?
*What is BIOS setting SMART reporting?
*Can the laptop run normally with the battery removed (or if it's a problem removing, disconnected)?
*Which M.2 PCIe SSD slot is allocated as SSD-0? Reason asking, that slot can be password protected in BIOS
*System spec says storage is 2x2230 (up to 512GB) and 2x2280 (up to 4TB) with the operating system on one of the 2280 drives. Can the OS be installed on one of the 2230 drives?
*What is the reasoning behind having the default being one of the 2280 drives?
*Apparently there are larger capacity cards for 2230 and 2280 slots now... is the laptop capable of coping with these?

phew that's a lot of questions 😂 I can answer a few now as I am just in the middle of making an m18 upgrade video with 10tb ssd and 64gb ram! the 2230 supports well over 512gb! I bought 2x 1tb WD SN740 drives. Yes you can install the OS to these drives. The default being the 2280 is because the 2280 offers higher capacity and faster drive options. Yes it can cope with larger capacities, I have already proved the 2230 can accept 1tb and I am trying to get my hands on some 2tb. You should be fine with an 8tb 2280 if you can find a drive with minimal chips on the rear of the drive. I will cover that more in the video :)

Ram would be OK but it's maxing out at 32GB.. They need a 64Gb option.

@@29Dhorton I just finished watching them all. Thanks for sharing your results. I thought worse for the temperatures....however, it is not clear to me how many Watts the CPU reached in the Cinebench test. If I can give you some advice regarding shooting video, use a tripod for the camera, it's convenient for you, and for whoever will watch the video.
I do plan to run this test again with the watts showing. I do have a tripod as well now to use
@@29Dhorton Well, I can't wait for more info! I have no idea what software you use to overlay live data on the screen, but I'm really happy with CapFrameX, it's based on RivaTuner. It would be interesting to understand if it was possible to do some Undervolt on the cpu, and see how much it would improve the situation.
