These examples move the goalposts a little, no? Boondock Saints was from that weird period where a few ambitious films with bankable actors went directly to DVD, so it didn’t get the theatrical release to fetch the box office cash. Terminator and Godzilla are major franchises, so studios aren’t dissuaded because of one flop entry. The Highlander is a little odd. It flopped initially, but was a sleeper hit in home video and cable reruns. That’s not the unusual part, though. A few films have gotten sequels based on the strength of post box office success. 1980s and 90s franchises typically got sequels until they ran out of gas. The odd thing about Highlander is that usually sequels from that time got made, but studios would shave the budgets till law of diminishing returns caught up and audiences ignored them. Highlander sequels got bigger budgets than the first one despite unenthusiastic gate receipts. Or at least it sounds odd. But then , a “flop” or “bad movie” can make more money long term than a hit. The reported return doesn’t always parse out home video, tv replays, overseas tv, merchandise licensing, and streaming platform leases. All of which don’t dump a fast bundle of cash, but the nickels and dimes add up.

plus none of the terminator films really flopped until dark fate. genisys still made $450million worldwide against a $150million budget. they underperformed but didn't really hit flop levels of underperformance.
Calling The Boondock Saints a flop is doing both movie history and the reason why it got such a limited theatrical release a great disservice, if it's due to ignorance then do better but if it's due to neglect then stop doing at all because people that callous who willingly spread misinformation do not deserve a platform. The movie was boycotted and still became a huge success despite the "higher powers" trying to cancel it because it's a great movie, hence why it made total sense for there to be a sequel. Really don't take a genius nor an amount of significant research to know this but being a channel that attempts to share (or even alter it seems) the history of movies there's no way you didn't know what happened to this movie in particular and why calling it a flop is inherently a calculated error given that you're well aware that its release was sabotaged from the start.

Blade Runner and Blade runner 2 both deserved better box office wise. Both movies are masterpieces in film making. Half the problem with the second movie is, who has even watched the first movie, it ain't a pop corn slick action flick, its niche neo noir cyberpunk.
You forgot Hocus Pocus. Sorry, younger Millenials and Gen Z, but the first Hocus Pocus was a box office flop (mostly because it was a kid friendly Halloween movie released in JULY). It only gained a cult following after annual TV airings, which some experts call the "It's a Wonderful Life" Effect.
Nice way to interject some drama where it's not needed. King of Monsters wasn't a flop, and everyone was waiting for the sequel. KOM is widely acknowledged by the fanbase as being better than the 2014 one. Godzilla vs Kong was in no danger.
Godzilla Vs Kong did better probably because you could see the monsters better, in previous entries they either only came out at night or were shrouded in fog, its almost as if they tried to save on SFX budget by hiding them.
The only Godzilla movie I saw was the one a friend dragged me to, it was awful, hint: the year was 1998 lol 🤪 (perhaps there's some on MST3K that I have yet to see) Highlander is the only good one and I have the director's cut on blu ray, hard to believe it flopped, but then I was only three in 1986. I'm not a fan of the two films that followed, and I didn't even watch anymore after that I haven't seen Salvation or Genisys, but I thought Dark Fate was better than Rise of the Machines, but I understand why people hate it for killing off John Conner. I do have the extended special edition of Judgment Day with the original ending wrapping everything up, I'm a bit surprised that people hating anything afrer don't just stuck with that I enjoyed the Blade Runner flicks, I even saw the second film at the theater, for the first film my introduction was VHS My brother showed me Boondock Saints, it has Indiana Jones (Sean Patrick Flannery), but I haven't seen the sequel I enjoyed both Hellboy movies, so if the sequel didn't do too well on video, well how is a remake a better chance to take than another sequel I enjoyed Riddick more than Chronicles of Riddick, and I just love Katee Sackhoff 😍, "So Say We All" So if a flop gets a sequel, is the sequel ever contractually obligated, "a contract is a contract!" Can a director sue a studio for a contract breach Hey do movie flops ever make more than hits, or does that only work on Broadway 🤔 (The Producers reference) l
They put boondocks in 5 theaters. So basically they didnt release it in theaters. I remember those dark days. They blamed everything on marylin manson and gun laws. Meanwhile the parents walked right by those two animals as they made pipe bombs in their garage. Should have put them in jail
The assumption that a film must do well at the box office is a STUPID assumption. Has the writer of this video never heard of a cult following? The phrase "has legs?" Plenty of works of art are unsuccessful upon release that then go on to get a large fan base which then allows for more work created in the same universe. Perhaps we shouldn't let morons write scripts for TH-cam videos.
Anyone who thinks "2049" is a better film than the original "Blade Runner" needs to have their head examined. Also, "Boondock Saints" is crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrAP!
Godzilla VS Kong was a better movie. Highlander was a flop? I just realized Highlander 2 takes place this year. It's no longer the future. I actually liked Highlander 2. 4:56 Oof, that effect aged poorly.
$387 Million is a flop?? i'm pretty sure i'd be happy if anything i did brought in $387 million... granted i don't have the $200 million to start it off, but if somebody will give the the $387 million in advance i'll certainly give it a try.
Making $387 million at the box office doesn't mean the producers took home that much. They get 40-60% of the box office take depending on what country and how long it's been in theaters. They will only get around 25% of the China box office as well. The 200 million doesn't include marketing either which could be 75-100 million. So yeah, it would be considered a flop.
The boondock saints was absolutely great. Based on the cult following of that movie, I personally introduced at least 10 people to the film. That's why it got a sequel, even if was subpar.

How about successful franchises overdue for a sequel?
I actually gave up on Death on the Nile but did enjoy the Venice movie mainly because it had such style
I saw Murder On the Orient Express and I was bored.
So I was surprised when Death On the Nile was made.
Hellboy The Cricket Fan! Had to rewind that a few times to catch the correct title.
Boondocks wasn't a flop it was a victim of columbine.
thumbs down just because how you worded this list shouldnt have said somehow
👍 Riddick ⚒️
The only Godzilla movie I saw was the one a friend dragged me to, it was awful, hint: the year was 1998 lol 🤪 (perhaps there's some on MST3K that I have yet to see)
Highlander is the only good one and I have the director's cut on blu ray, hard to believe it flopped, but then I was only three in 1986. I'm not a fan of the two films that followed, and I didn't even watch anymore after that
I haven't seen Salvation or Genisys, but I thought Dark Fate was better than Rise of the Machines, but I understand why people hate it for killing off John Conner. I do have the extended special edition of Judgment Day with the original ending wrapping everything up, I'm a bit surprised that people hating anything afrer don't just stuck with that
I enjoyed the Blade Runner flicks, I even saw the second film at the theater, for the first film my introduction was VHS
My brother showed me Boondock Saints, it has Indiana Jones (Sean Patrick Flannery), but I haven't seen the sequel
I enjoyed both Hellboy movies, so if the sequel didn't do too well on video, well how is a remake a better chance to take than another sequel
I enjoyed Riddick more than Chronicles of Riddick, and I just love Katee Sackhoff 😍, "So Say We All"
So if a flop gets a sequel, is the sequel ever contractually obligated, "a contract is a contract!" Can a director sue a studio for a contract breach
Hey do movie flops ever make more than hits, or does that only work on Broadway 🤔 (The Producers reference) l
"Do flops make more than hits?"
Only Uwe Bol knows for sure! 😉
Dredd is the box office flop that needs a sequel.....
How did highlander cost $19M in 1986! That's the same budget as BTTF
Blade runner 2049 was so good. It's sad that it's considered a flop
I honestly thought King of the Monsters was the best Godzilla film in the series
They put boondocks in 5 theaters. So basically they didnt release it in theaters. I remember those dark days. They blamed everything on marylin manson and gun laws. Meanwhile the parents walked right by those two animals as they made pipe bombs in their garage. Should have put them in jail
These new Godzilla movies have to much of a weird stories.
The Highlander sequels were great comedies.
I'm no expert on movie economics, but a 75-100 million $ profit is NOT a flop.
i really enjoyed Terminator Salvation...especially compared to the one that came after
Genesys is not a sequel to Salvation. when your list breaks its own premise this early maybe just don't instead.
I still want my money back for highlander 2.
Anyone who thinks "2049" is a better film than the original "Blade Runner" needs to have their head examined.
Also, "Boondock Saints" is crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrAP!
I went to see Snake Eyes at the cinema 2 days after it was released and I was the only person there.
Godzilla VS Kong was a better movie. Highlander was a flop? I just realized Highlander 2 takes place this year. It's no longer the future. I actually liked Highlander 2.
4:56 Oof, that effect aged poorly.
The Boondock Saints is awesome. The sequel is awful.
"You won't know until u try"
$387 Million is a flop?? i'm pretty sure i'd be happy if anything i did brought in $387 million... granted i don't have the $200 million to start it off, but if somebody will give the the $387 million in advance i'll certainly give it a try.
Making $387 million at the box office doesn't mean the producers took home that much. They get 40-60% of the box office take depending on what country and how long it's been in theaters. They will only get around 25% of the China box office as well. The 200 million doesn't include marketing either which could be 75-100 million. So yeah, it would be considered a flop.
Ellie should do all their videos.
