Exactly. I thought it looked like complete trash - I had NO idea what it was really about. Luckily a summer student I had in my office asked if I'd seen it and when I told him "No, it looked like another cheesy Van Dam style movie (something I'd grown out of) he told it's not and simply that I should go see it. West Side Story bombing was a surprise? Not only are modern movie musicals a box office crapshoot, but no one was really asking for an “updated” West Side Story, the classic movie is so beloved. If they tried to redo The Sound of Music, they’d probably run into the same issue, no matter the quality.
Excactly. Especially when the previous movie was already mostly about Furiosa too. Mad Max was just his silent side kick. But of course they need to promote their feminist agenda in every freaking movie these days. same with the new Matrix movie. And even napoleon was mostly about his wife, (who didn't even need to be in the movie at all.)
The Shawshank Redemption also had competition in theaters vs. Pulp Fiction & Forrest Gump. Was a tall task, plus the title was unappealing to movie fans.
I remember trailers for Fight Club making it look like it had a mildly interesting, new gimmick in an otherwise formulaic sports movie. Never would have guessed it gets you thinking about the pros and cons of civilization versus anarchy.

Because Hollyweird has a lot of redundancies. For instance, instead of limiting the budget of the caterer and meal costs, it's just a free for all. I looovee Fury Road, but wasn’t surprised Furiosa bombed. - (rough) CGI heavy trailer - prequel (several years later) to a 10/10 movie that wrapped things up satisfactorily. - name of movie is a side character in a more niche franchise - title character of franchise not present - recast actress who made Furiosa interesting to watch
Technically speaking, The 1939 Wizard of Oz film bombed on its initial theatrical release and it didn’t make back its budget until a decade later when it was rereleased in theaters.
As did Citizen Kane, Its A Wonderful Life,Dark City and so many other great films. Sometimes people need a little time to come to grips with something new and different.
No one i knew had any idea what Scott Pilgrim was but the trailer definitely made us want to see the movie. It is now one of my favorite comedy movies and graphic novel series.
While not as aggregious as the last ‘movie bomb list’, there’s still a couple of films here that aren’t actually bombs. A bomb is a movie that fails to make back its production budget, films that manage that but struggle to make the ‘break-even point’ are disappointments
The main problem is that most movies in the past could get a second chance through tv (in the UK, The Italian Job had became a classic through traditional Christmas/Boxing Day tv showings), VHS sales and rentals in the 80s and 90s, DVD and Blu-ray sales in the 2000s and 2010s. Now with streaming it is hard for a film to stand out and get another opportunity to reach an audience. Also, I think since the pandemic, people's habits have changed and cinemas have now became more of a special occasion instead of a regular visit. I would think many households during the pandemic invested heavily in the best home Cinema options and monthly subscriptions to streaming services.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World did not deserve to fail at the Box Office. The film was based on a popular graphic novel series and was directed by Edgar Wright, who had made two awesome comedies that were also commercial success upon release.
Honorable mention: It's a wonderful life. It's regarded as the best Christmas film ever, it had the problem of being released around the tail end of WW2. 🎉
@@StanHalen1936 Nah, the OP has a point. “It’s a Wonderful Life” was a box office bomb. The major reason why it’s a classic is because it accidentally got released into the public domain and TV networks can show it in the Christmas season. In fact, that movie bankrupted it’s studio.
Dredd had the burden of Judge Dredd to overcome. I will agree that Willy Wonka, The Thing, and Shawshank are genuinely mystifying. Wasn't the original Blade Runner poorly received?
6:45 Me watching Killers of the Flower Moon on this list: It’s a movie that got two releases, one was theatrically and the other was on Apple TV+. This was planned since Paramount agreed to co-distribute the film.
Rachel Zegler is box office poison. Even before she started writing controversial quotes, something about her is just not interesting for me. She was bad in West Side Story, and by far the worst thing about Shazam 2. I didn't even manage to watch the whole trailer for her hunger games movie because of her.
Furiosa came out in the worst possible time. If it released right after Fury Road, it would have not bombed. I think people overlooked it thinking it was yet another, you know what. All because of all that recent force-fed garbage stuff that left a bad taste in our mouths.
I find it unfair that Furiosa is bombing while Garfield is making more money. Let me repeat. Garfield is doing a better job financially than Furiosa. Let that sink in.
I saw this film last week on a date I let her choose the film and I had never seen a mad max film before and I really liked it, last night we watched the first one and I prefer Furiosa I thought it was way better
West Side Story and Dredd suffered from similar issues : They were both remakes of movies of the same name that no one really cared about any more, and were both had very niche target audiences. It was not a surprise that both came and went without much notice.
Fight Club is a CLASSIC! Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, Meatloaf, Jared Leto?!? West Side Story did NOT need a remake-even with Spielberg.
Actually these movies bombing at the box office isn't all that surprising: 1. Remaking of original classic just for the sake of remaking usually doesn't do well without bringing anything new. Hence it's why West Side Story and Blade Runner 2049 failed at the BO. 2. Too long of a Running time. It doesn't matter if it's a good movie but if it's too long, people aren't too keen staying in theater. This is true for Killers of the Flower Moon, Fight Club and Shawshank Redemption. 3. Overall bad story lines
Then why did the 1939 Wizard of Oz film bomb when it was first released? It wasn’t exactly a remake of an original film although it was an adaptation of a novel. Did it have too long of a running time? Or was it unfortunately released at the wrong time when other more successful films were released at the same date?
@@melissawickersham9912 Wizard of Oz was more because of cost of production, marketing and distribution. Willy Wonka on the other hand, I'm not sure why it bombed.
I watched Fight Club recently and that movie was great. Blade Runner 2049 was also nice to watch, even multiple times. And yes, they should have never made Furiosa. Another example to leave some franchises alone.
I can think of a few that should’ve made the list: .The Wizard of Oz (1939) .Definitely: In the Heights (2021) .The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) .Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) .Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) .Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
@Daisy-le9tr Sorry to tell you this, but the Wizard of Oz actually did fail quite badly at the box office when it was first released. It didn’t make back its budget until a decade later when it was rereleased. Although, to be fair, the Wizard of Oz was a *very expensive* film to make because it was one of the first technicolor films. That’s why it’s production budget couldn’t be recouped and the film couldn’t break even until a decade later.
Reason why that mad max film didn't sell is because it's feminist garbage, nobody wants to watch pretzal girls fighting muscular guys, that's F'in ridiculous.
A Mad Max movie without Mad Max was just a stupid idea to begin with, then add the fact that the audience didn’t care to know Furiosa’s backstory, the flop was eminent.
Saw Shawshank first show in the (2000 seater then) Odeon Leicester sq and of course the overriding memory was it was great. But a close second was great sadness there was only about 20 of us in there!
Bods very well with Fury Road... If the da didn't bomb it and Miller made The Wasteland it would be an amazing trilogy for a marathon... Maybe we get lucky and they decide to do it anyway...
Furiosa doesn't deserve this shame. It was a damn good movie that deserve respect. This generation is just too damn disappointing. The freaking animated Garfield movie was #1. now WTF
One big problem I'm seeing here is the vast budget earmarked for each of these "bombs." When a movie costs as much as the D-Day invasion, it's asking for a lot of trouble.
I saw it once in cinema. Unfortunately "Furiosa" had more CGI for its own good, it really "threw me" out of the experience more than I hoped not to... For what ever reason, the use of CGI in "Fury Road" worked greatly. I know that it might not be possible (storywise) but they should use more practical effects or achieve more with the combination of CGI and practical, like in "Fury Road"... Thankfully the last half hour of Furiosa really works wells on every cinematic level... Seeing it once... a good movie, not an epic/great one, like the first. I honestly believe that Fury Road is one of the best action movies of all time...
Furiosa was AMAZING, especially in 4dx. Long wait? Sure it was but I felt it was well worth it and tied into Fury Road beautifully. And Anya blew me away.
I agree, but I think the problem is they are "mad max" movies, and he was second fiddle in the first, so many weren't excited about a prequel without him
The marketing of the movie targeted the wrong kind of people .. the so called "modern audiences" that is so minuscule it may as well doesn't exist. All while chanting the spell of brie to ward off the male audiences that was traditionally overwhelmingly the main audiences of its kind of movies.
One of the things about the really good films here that didn't do that well - is that these are great films that the movie going public of the moment just didn't appreciate. The thing is - these will *_NEVER_* stop being great movies and people will still be watching them in the future. With all the streaming services they have now - I've been able to rent or buy some really great films from 60 years ago. There will always be people watching these movies - because they never stop being great. The problem is - the Movie Industry doesn't care how much money something makes them over a 20 year period - they care about how much money something makes the first two days it's released. So - this phenomenon will never cease. .
As a long time fan of the original West Side Story since I was a child, I was shocked, appalled and mortified that Master Steven Spielberg’s take on the classic musical failed to find an audience. I saw it in theaters with my then girlfriend and best friend, neither of whom I think had seen the original movie, and I personally loved it.
This happens in tv as well. Shows like Star Trek and Family Guy both got cancelled really early due to low viewership. Only to gain mass popularity in syndication which lead to their respective resurrections. In the case of Star Trek a new show was in the middle of being created after the popularity soared called Star Trek Phase II with most of the original cast slated to return. But ended up shutting down pre-production to reconfigure for the big screen after a little known Sci-fi flick called Star Wars hit theaters.
OK ... About the Mad Max franchise. Remember that of the first three movies - only _The Road Warrior_ was any good. And - Basically - these movies are all "Motorcycle Movies" - _The Road Warrior_ just being the best one ever made. .
The Mad Max universe was about the collapse of civilization because the world run out of oil. They should marketed it that way to enrage the Just Stop Oil types of people. It would be a self propelled marketing with little to none money spent, and created good perception about the movie among normal people.
@@danasaeed9018 Yes. But you understand now, right? Films being quality doesn't automatically mean butts in seats. Also, 4. This franchise has never been a big money maker at the box office. That includes Fury Road.
I liked Furiosa. The prequel was fascinating to see, just wish the volume was more smooth on the streaming services I used to watch it a couple days ago. A couple points in the movie had shifting volume that sounded different or didn’t seem to match characters movements. Don’t know if the theater showings had the same problem
If I knew Scott Pilgrim was a video game movie, I might have watched it. I was not familiar with the IP. 2:13 Now that one I watched. The author of the book didn't like Gene Wilder as Wonka. He wanted Inspector Clouseau to be Wonka. I liked Judge Dredd better. It was funnier. 6:27 YOU BETRAYED THE LAW! LAAAAAAAW! It was so bad that it's good. The runtime of Killers of the Flower Moon scared me. I am not watching a movie that long in theaters (even though I watched Return of the King). I also didn't watch Oppenheimer for similar reasons. Return of the King was a special case and I knew I would like the movie. I don't know if I would like Killers of the Flower Moon. I don't know why I bothered watching Blade Runner 2049. It was boring. I usually don't see Ryan Gosling in serious roles. Shawshank Redemption got a cult following. I only watched it because my uncle had it and I wanted to watch something.

Dune Part One came out in the same period and did not flop
You mean the cold symptoms they pretended was a disaster?
Do you think older audiences were eager for a West Side Story remake?
@@VintageStarlet Some things never need to be remade. Although to be fair it is Romeo and Juliet with music and dancing.
I've always wondered well how Fight Club would have done had it ended like the novel did
Dread was such an awesome movie. I was literally shocked to hear it failed at the the box office.
Amazing video watch mojo,fantastic job.
Good list, but I can explain various reasons why each of these failed, regardless of the movies' quality. So no, I'm not surprised to hear about them on this list.
I looovee Fury Road, but wasn’t surprised Furiosa bombed.
- (rough) CGI heavy trailer
- prequel (several years later) to a 10/10 movie that wrapped things up satisfactorily.
- name of movie is a side character in a more niche franchise
- title character of franchise not present
- recast actress who made Furiosa interesting to watch
I love FIGHT CLUB, IN THE HEIGHTS, WEST SIDE STORY, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, and THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.
Furiosa deserves our praise
it has our praise it just didnt have our attention
One of the best movies that I saw this summer.
Technically speaking, The 1939 Wizard of Oz film bombed on its initial theatrical release and it didn’t make back its budget until a decade later when it was rereleased in theaters.
Released at the same time as Gone w/the Wind....stiff competition
As did Citizen Kane, Its A Wonderful Life,Dark City and so many other great films. Sometimes people need a little time to come to grips with something new and different.
1:10 I see what you did there.....bravo sir, bravo👏
Furiosa is the perfect example of 'right movie, wrong time'.
More like good movies that went woke
@@corymiller536it didn’t go woke its just an unintresting character

Furiosa was great and deserves to make a profit. Bladerunner 2049 is also amazing.
I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves later on for not seeing Furiosa in theaters.
@@csurampower Why ? nothing about the story is interesting.
@@troydenbrum2979 And you're not one of those people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Killers of the flower moon would have been huge success, if they took care about runtime...
1:32 but on the bright side it eventually got reviewed later on which the creators managed to create Scott pilgrim takes off which everyone loved
No one i knew had any idea what Scott Pilgrim was but the trailer definitely made us want to see the movie. It is now one of my favorite comedy movies and graphic novel series.
I would've been surprised if Furiosa hadn't flopped. The absence of Mad Max was a downer for me. Maybe i wasn't the only one who felt this way?
Except its furiosas backstory, its the mad max universe but not his story.
While not as aggregious as the last ‘movie bomb list’, there’s still a couple of films here that aren’t actually bombs. A bomb is a movie that fails to make back its production budget, films that manage that but struggle to make the ‘break-even point’ are disappointments
Furiosa was freaking awesome
It wasnt
@@johnjames7332 im happy you don't like having fun watching action films and wan't everything you see to be oscar gold.
Yes,just saw it today.Decent turnout at the theatre.Anja-Taylor Joy was great as Furiosa.
Unlike Mad Max Fury Road, Furiosa Is Completely CGI, Too Much CGI Ruined My Experience
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World did not deserve to fail at the Box Office. The film was based on a popular graphic novel series and was directed by Edgar Wright, who had made two awesome comedies that were also commercial success upon release.
Being popular to comic readers isn't the same for moviegoers.
@@cafeabasedecinema unfortunately.
A movie well ahead of its time. If this Scott Pilgrim was made just a few years later, I think it would have been a smash hit.
Maybe it's popular to some, but widely unknown to wider audiences (including me).
Honorable mention: It's a wonderful life. It's regarded as the best Christmas film ever, it had the problem of being released around the tail end of WW2. 🎉
Bot
@@StanHalen1936
Nah, the OP has a point.
I loved all the themes and characters carried over from the newly rediscovered Mad Max video game.
Rachel Zegler is box office poison. Even before she started writing controversial quotes, something about her is just not interesting for me. She was bad in West Side Story, and by far the worst thing about Shazam 2. I didn't even manage to watch the whole trailer for her hunger games movie because of her.
Not a fan either, but didn’t her Hunger Games do well? Though I credit that to the franchise more than her.
The most overrated actress currently working. A total DEI plant who is the weakest link in every movie she's in.
Stop! Stop! Her career is already dead!
Let that sink in.
because kids or their parents dont care about the quality of a movie to entertain them. Not surprising
CATS.....you forgot CATS.....
But the video is about movies that SURPRISINGLY bombed
Everyone's TRYING to forget Cats.
It bombed and it didnt come as a surprise as it was REALLY bad (except Taylor's performance part).
Genuinely one of the worst movies ever made.
Furiosa doesn't deserve to bomb. It's one of the greatest revenge stories of all time in 5 years it will be called a masterpiece
People just saw it as another Girl Boss movie so they passed on it. But maybe you'll be right. Time will tell
I liked Furiosa more than Mad Max Fury Road. Period.
@@shadowdragonlord2295it will def do well on streaming. Hopefully ancillary revenue makes up for the lackluster box office
It's not even streaming or on DVD yet. Those numbers will go up.
I was surprised to find Furiosa included on this list.
Fight Club is a CLASSIC! Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter, Meatloaf, Jared Leto?!?
West Side Story did NOT need a remake-even with Spielberg.
Actually these movies bombing at the box office isn't all that surprising:
Why did Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory bomb when it was first released?
@@melissawickersham9912 Wizard of Oz was more because of cost of production, marketing and distribution. Willy Wonka on the other hand, I'm not sure why it bombed.
Dredd is so good. I was so frustrated that the fan base didn’t support it in full.
I watched Fight Club recently and that movie was great. Blade Runner 2049 was also nice to watch, even multiple times.
And yes, they should have never made Furiosa. Another example to leave some franchises alone.
I can think of a few that should’ve made the list:
.The Wizard of Oz (1939)
.Definitely: In the Heights (2021)
.The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
.Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
.Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003)
.Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
@Daisy-le9tr
Sorry to tell you this, but the Wizard of Oz actually did fail quite badly at the box office when it was first released.
Furiosa A Mad Max Saga
Movie of the year 2024😊
A Mad Max movie without Mad Max was just a stupid idea to begin with, then add the fact that the audience didn’t care to know Furiosa’s backstory, the flop was eminent.
Saw Shawshank first show in the (2000 seater then) Odeon Leicester sq and of course the overriding memory was it was great. But a close second was great sadness there was only about 20 of us in there!
*I don’t care, the first chance I get I’m watching Furiosa.*
I loved it - well worth seeing.😊
You should. It’s badass.
Bods very well with Fury Road... If the da didn't bomb it and Miller made The Wasteland it would be an amazing trilogy for a marathon... Maybe we get lucky and they decide to do it anyway...
It's better than fury road, and mad Max. It's not nearly as good as road warrior, or thunder dome though.
People have been dumbed down so much they don’t appreciate good film anymore.
Dress 2012 is really good, story effects, very under-rated
A Mad Max movie without Mad Max and you are surprisinged why it flopped😂😂😂
Audience are still not dumb enough 😂😂😂
Furiosa doesn't deserve this shame. It was a damn good movie that deserve respect. This generation is just too damn disappointing. The freaking animated Garfield movie was #1. now WTF
The marketing team was chanting the spiel of brie to ward off the main audience block a.k.a. male audiences.
And surprised when the movie flopped.
Hey, just a heads up Mojo, you're breaking the first rule to Fight Club, you don't talk about Fight Club.
One big problem I'm seeing here is the vast budget earmarked for each of these "bombs." When a movie costs as much as the D-Day invasion, it's asking for a lot of trouble.
Any project with Harrison Ford will bomb, he absolutely decimated his fan base and reputation when he spoke out against Han Solo and the SW universe.
Edge of Tomorrow not on here is criminal
Furiosa was AMAZING, especially in 4dx. Long wait? Sure it was but I felt it was well worth it and tied into Fury Road beautifully. And Anya blew me away.
Furiosa was pretty great, it definitely didn't deserve to bomb. I was invested from start to finish.
It's really difficult for films to return profits now a days as a lot of the competition are on streaming apps.
So - this phenomenon will never cease.
.
2:35 WHAT?!?!
Dredd need one I still rewatch it from beginning to the end
FURIOSA WAS AWESOME!
Let those critics make theyre own movie.
Furiosa A Mad Max Saga Definitely Did Not Deserve To Bomb.
No it didn’t. But it’s understandable why it did.
