Fine, I'll Add Arab Representation to The Sims 4 (Since EA Won't)

  • In Today's Speed Build Saturday, I'm building a regular, Middle Eastern apartment. I really hope that one day I'll be able to place this lot on a desert world that accurately represents where I, and many other Arabs, grew up.
I just wanted to share some positive things about my culture and heritage, and push for more accurate and inclusive representation in The Sims 4.

My first year of teaching I had a Muslim student. I was vaguely aware of Ramadan but didn’t realize it was a winter holiday, so when I was passing out treats for Christmas, she very graciously declined. Afterwards She came up to explain that she was fasting due to Ramadan. I asked her about it and she had some time so she explained the basics. I then asked if it was solely because the gift was food-based that she did not accept and she assured me that was the only reason. Next day, I came in with a small gift that was not food-based and she lit up. Culture is a deep part of a person’s upbringing, and it serves us all to respect what everyone else brings to the table.

Ramadan isn’t necessarily a winter holiday. Islamic holidays are based on a lunar calendar, and the dates change year to year. Ramadan is currently happening right now this year! Interesting that your first year it happened in December! This must’ve been the 90s or so huh?

You can change your sims work outfit with a cheat code I believe. But it shouldn't have to be that way because the game should recognize it and automatically put it on the work outfit.

There is a mod that can help you with that. It is Lot 51 Fashion Authority where you can design your Sims’ career outfit. So everytime they go to work, they will wear what you have created for them, automatically

And to add some more insult to that, I had an uncle who lived in Honolulu and helped with the cleanup effort after the bombing, helping clear a school to turn into a triage center for the casualites... not to mention how every man of service age in my family served in the US military and still had family in the concentration camps during the war.

Bisexual here, and yeah, ABSOLUTELY felt that part about certain identities being made political, when all you're trying to do is EXIST. Doesn't matter what sexuality, or ethnicity, or whatever, we're allowed and owed the right to live our lives and be seen in media and culture as something other than just a political talking point. And your builds are always fantastic, but this one was especially wonderful, you could feel the love coming through in this one, especially the "traditional" half, it just felt so warm.

I remember after watching this video I made a comment to my husband saying, “it’s really sad that she has to try to justify her culture.” Sims was always meant to be a representation, and a simulation of life and all that encompasses! I wish we didn’t fail the Arab community as much as we do, however, listening to and uplifting these voices from those communities are one of the best ways we can create change.

Its genuinely disgusting that people think these things are ok to say to people.

And even with me being white passing people still mock me. Regarding the build challenge: I don't know if I'm good enough but I'll try. It's so hard to make those beautiful baroque buildings that are everywhere in Vienna. (I wish I could afford a mansion/castle someday...)
Our normal living houses aren't that different from american homes. (The most different things are that our suburban homes have fences all around them and not only the backyard fenced in, we usually have hallways to enter the building with closets for jackets and shoes and not enter and stand in the living room and we have our toilets in separate rooms and not in the bathroom very often.)
Ooh or I could build a rural old farming home like they are in the Alpes. 🤔

    • @xoderota
      @xoderota 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I will probably go with a concrete block apartment building 😅 I'd love to build something more traditional to specifically our architecture (I'm czech) but unfortunately that's pretty much impossible in the sims (or maybe not, I honestly never tried, but specifically those roofs could be hard - though now that I look at them, I think it might actually be possible to build that! I might try after all)
A lot of our architecture is "borrowed" from around us including the concrete blocks and a lot of people here hate them because they're a reminder of the SSSR but for me, they've always felt like home. Moreso than the traditional houses because those are considered cultural and not a lot of people get to live in them (it's usually generational afaik).
I could also go for the classic type of house I live in but I feel like that would be boring. We'll see 😅

That's sooo true! I'm italian, in my country food is a big part of our culture and the fact that in the sims 4 there're so few italian dishes makes my gameplays less immersive. I can't even imagine how much more frustrating it must feel for the people that have even less representation 🥺

I have a hijab wearing sim for the mint generation of the notsoberry challenge. She takes the headscarf off every time she goes to work so I have to customize it. There is also not a lot of modest clothing, most of the base game stuff either is too short on the arms, shows the chest or is a crop top.

Flat rooftops are my favorite! It's Holi so I was reminded of how much fun I used to have as a kid in Nepal. We would throw water balloons from the rooftop on people walking by. We would have connecting rooftops to houses next door so we would throw colors and use water guns and pichkari while hiding and avoiding one another. Also when I would go to Terai for the summer and we would lay down a mattress on the rooftop and just enjoy the night breeze and the open sky. Although the mosquitoes were out for our blood, it was still so nice and peaceful. I miss it so much.

Ramadan Kareem! Thank you so much for sharing your process, and what your childhood looked like! I feel you with the whole pressure of having to be "one of the good ones" - I'm Native, so I'm not allowed to be angry about being misrepresented either, because that in itself feeds into a stereotype. Like you said, people either don't remember or don't care about the variety in our cultures, we just get mashed together with everyone else that falls under a geographic umbrella. When we create for ourselves, we make changes happen, so I hope EA is watching and taking notes!

I live in Australia and we have the metal bars too (along with a fly screen fitted with it) and its to keep out both insectoid and hominid intruders. I also relate to wanting your culture to be represented without it being automatically labelled "political". I'm aboriginal ontop of being aussie and it feels like i cant mention my upbringing without people deciding to debate me on my race because im white passing. Either way this is a really great build and has given me a new appreciation for Arabic cultures, i especially love the idea of just chilling on a rooftop with friends.

I hope EA team work with you to make this happen! as an Arab and a simmer I understand your struggle and couldn't agree more there is literally not a single arab representation that yet to be realistic and not offensive lol, also I cant believe that we still CANT edit our work fits to suit our sim without cheats.. from non-friendly hijabi fits to the old fashion hijab collection I can prolly type for a while tbh lmao.

I'm not Arab myself, but I'm really proud of my culture and love seeing it represented, and I'm always proud and happy to see people sharing their own culture. Thank you for this, I really loved this video, and hearing how proud you were of your own culture made me even sadder that this isn't something you can do without walking on eggshells on your own channel. Happy Ramadan to you, and to everybody reading this who celebrates it
