Easily Fix Gas Fireplace with Electronic Ignition When it Doesn't Stay Lit - [SOLVED]

  • If your gas fireplace won't light or doesn't stay lit, here's how we fixed ours. It was easy. This is a Superior Gas Fireplace Model G-48 that has an electronic ignition. It was built in the 1970's. After not having been used for a long time, the fireplace was started up but would operate for only a couple minutes then shut down. We determined there was either air in the gas line or the sensor was dirty. Therefore, we cleaned the sensor and we pressed on the thermostat dial until we cleared the gas line. The fireplace now lights immediately and stays lit for a long time. In this video it has been running for at least 30 minutes.
    I kind of talked a little too much :) But, if you're looking to do some gas fireplace troubleshooting or if the fireplace pilot won't stay lit, maybe this will help.
    Thanks for watching. Oh, before you go...

    Our fireplace is our sole source of heating so when it didn't work this fall it got our attention right away. This video helped me to fix our NG 24" unvented gas logs. First I took all the logs off. There was a lot of dust caked on pipes and the temperature sensor must be built into this unit so I think it was covered in dust bunnies as well. I used steel wool to shine up the pilot assembly parts, knocking off any dust or debris, then I used steel wool on the burner holes to clear them and then vacuumed everything. I held in the pilot not lighted to purge the line and I did notice that it took a while before it actually smelled like gas. It lit easily and never turned off again. Thank you very much for this great video!

    This is great help. I was able to see my thermocouple covered in white gunk like you described. I took the front glass off, after I turned the gas off, and was able to remove the logs and gently rub the thermopile/couple sensor with a scotchbrite like pad. Reignited the pilot and the gas came on immediately. Thanks again!

    Thank you for this. I just fixed my gas fireplace which went out during this record cold spell. I cleaned the flame sensor as you suggested with the 3M pad. The pilot lit with no issue and the fireplace is on. Also cleaned the glass with Weiman Cook Top Daily Cleaner and Weiman Quick wipes.

    After 18 years in the business I learned a United Stated one dollar bill is the best thing to use to clean the thermopile and thermocoupler for fireplaces. After I clean them I turn them 180 degrees for new contact. Makes each one last twice as long. Winter is my favorite time of the year! Flame on

    Standing Pilot Unit with wall switch , thermopile only . The Electronic Ignition Fireplaces are an ipi system ( intermittent pilot ignition ) and are considered electronic ignition . Personally I think that the standing pilot units are more reliable and only need power to power a fan . The wall switch on this particular unit is low volt created by the pilot flame itself. The low volt wires connected to the switch are going to be connected to the valve underneath the unit and then possible linked through a high limit switch and or a safety switch. All Manufactured Gas Fireplaces today have to be an electronic ignition unit which is an ipi system. It requires constant power to the fireplace into a junction box under fireplace then a transformer steps it down to low voltage into a module or control board where it also has an auxiliary battery back up just in case of power failure ( will not run fan or lights ) just burner . Great video , sry not tryn to be the fireplace police.. Salt Lake City , Uintah Fireplaces

    A good thermopile will produce about .500 volts DC if the pilot flame is properly impinging on the hot junction of the thermopile.

  • @227lazer
    @227lazer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thermo-pile has wires thermal coupler screws into the valve with a brass nut. This guy fixed his fireplace by cleaning the pilot flame Hood accidentally not much of.
    what he says besides that fixed it. A nice blue pilot flame will heat the sensors plenty good to run the fireplace if they are working. A little bit of white ash and crust built up on the sensors will not stop them from heating up enough miniature leaks on the pilot tubes will cause low pressure to the pilot Hood this will give you a small pilot that will not heat the sensors well

  • @227lazer
    @227lazer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I do this for a living. Then Only thing you said you did that made the fireplace work was blowing ait in the pilot hood.
    It's not electric . It's a milivolt gas valve. That knob in the valve is the valve control knob. Not a thermostat. Scotch bright and wire bore brush on the thermos pile won't ever fix a problem.
    Loose wires connections and a dirty pilot head are common reasons these simple systems don't work. If that doesn't fix it you need parts.
    Also want add . THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY TO HAVE MOISTURE AND AIR BUBBLES IN THE GAS LINES AFTER IT HAS RUN BURNED FOR A FEW MINUTES. IF YOU HAD ANY AIR IN THE LINE IT WOULD JAVE HAD TO BE BLEED OUT BEFORE THE THING WOULD EVER RUN MORE THAT 30 SECONDS. good a mature video full of nonsense.
    Great job accidetaly fixing your gas fire place.

      Took the words right out of my mouth. I congratulate him for trying to fix it himself and I would assume he has learned from the comments. I bet next time he won't bother bleeding the gas line. And hopefully understands this fire place does not have electronic ignition. I myself have learned from your comments to check the connections on the thermocouple which may be the solution to the problem I am having right now and why I was searching youtube for help. If he has read these two years of comments I bet he's much better equipped to fix it next time. TH-cam is great for fixit stuff. After I fix the fireplace I need to fix the dryer next.

      It’s funny people thinking they have air or moisture in the gas line lol honestly I find the best form of creating a hotter blue Pilot is to use soapy water to drip down to clear the orifice of soot. So many customers are like why. Well it works perfectly lol 30 Year’s true and tested

    Thermopile generates millivolts which holds open your pilot valve and main valve.

  • @mandycombs1071

    Just an FYI, read your manufacturer instructions. If you mess with a millivolt system, it will void your warranty.

  • @xslabcabxhearsex
    @xslabcabxhearsex 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If this unit is this old you need to check what the millivolts is being made.you need a millivolts meter and check.when off you want it to be around 400 and on it should drop back around 300.after it’s working pull on the wires slightly and see if the millivolts start to jump.if so you have poor wire connection.they are notorious for this problem.thermopiles do go bad over time and cleaning them doesn’t always fix the problem.

    Need Help: I have Intermittent Heatilator Gas Fire log Model# ND42361 Serial# GA1568181. I have two wall switches. When I turn the 1st wall switch (power) nothing happens but after turning the 2nd wall switch the pilot comes on and stays on but the burner does not. I have: Replaced the IPI electronic ignition control module & A/C Wall Adaptor. Cleaned burner holes and heat sensor (flame is close to heat sensor - heat sensor turns red) . I will truly appreiciate if anyone can let me know what other troubleshooting I can do to get the burner working ? Blessings

      joseph benshaw Robertshaw gas valve will work.they were on most of the older fireplaces.make sure you get the proper thermopile also.the ones at most supply house are for floor furnaces that use the 750 millivolts and they will take out the valve.good millivolts for these would 400.

      First, turn off gas, try to reset pilot. If not good check your electric panel in case any breakers tripped. If so, reset and retry the fireplace. If it still fails to light call in the Heating technician. Don't throw money away unnecessarily. Not likely the gas supply, but pilot must stay lit to work.

    • @iLikeMike

      Thanks for the info. We got it to light and stay lit.

  • @smartin6784
    @smartin6784 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe your solution had nothing to do with bleeding the gas line - which can be quite dangerous. Your gas appliance lit due to the cleaning of the thermal pile. A thermal pile generates voltage which in turn actuates the gas valve. If the thermal pile is defective or corroded / dirty it won't generate enough voltage to actuate the gas valve.

    • @sunnyday4508
      @sunnyday4508 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the thermopile is corroded does it always need replacing? My repairman today said this was the case and charged me $250 for a new thermopile. No "measurement" was ever taken.

    • @iLikeMike
      @iLikeMike  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on what we did, we simply rubbed it off with a 3M pad and it worked. Perhaps a dirtier thermopile with more residue would need to be rubbed with some very fine emery paper or sandpaper.
