I built one and I used this video for much of my final design. Thanks for posting this. I do have to say that the next one I make won’t be 1/2” stainless steel(all I had laying around) so hard to drill and tap!!! I put a completely new bevel (19*) on my chef’s knife using 120~220~and 320. It worked nicely, but the sand paper wears out quickly! I think I will make a bunch of spare blocks so I can have longer sharpening sessions. The sharpening really goes quickly once you have developed a consistent edge! I purchased some psa lapping film and some really hard wood for my finer blocks but I think glass surfaces might be necessary. I made my jig with 1/4” guide rods since the Wicked Edge rods are that size. I might break down and buy some of their diamonds at some point (if I’m feeling rich) it is nice to have the option. If you buy any other diamond stones it is important to know that not all diamond stones are made equally. Do your research there is a lot of crap out there. Thanks again, cheers!
I have an Edge Pro and just came from the shop after making several aluminum blanks and cutting up three different grits of Harbor Freight diamond plates and gluing them to the Pro using my [handheld, but mounted on a table] metal cutting bandsaw. The homemade diamond unit worked like a champ to touch up a kitchen knife with just the coarse one. I did freehand polish on a quality diamond plate, before taking it to the buffer. In spite of the blow out approach, it push cuts paper like it's not there. The point is, you could do the same, but you'd have to adjust for depth of the cut plates, when you glued them onto your blocks. It would sure crank up your already kick butt homemade unit.

I had to come back and share something. I just started investigating the possibilities and ideas. I took apart one of these lift support jacks. 8mm shaft / M8-1.25 threading All around and I think it is somewhat standard. This is measures for CNC Pillow blocks and shafts .... 3D printing, laser stuff, etc. (Estimating $40 on CNC parts from China) If you get hold of a die with M8-1.25 threading you can just pull the sockets and use CNC stuff to build a really slick unit. Add Flat head screws w/ spacer to 2 pillow blocks attach both w/ spring and pinch a diamond plate between. you would need 4 blocks 2 shafts the socket jacks and parts of this fancy unit build. VERY SLICK JOB MY MAN !!
OK, I like canoeing and I like a sharp knife. So I'm going to build one that I can do both with !!! I love the idea with the shocks, just what I was looking for so my build does not look hokey.
Cool! I dig the home brew stuff. I made a edge pro semi clone but out of 3/4" thick aluminum plate and stainless for the posts. I use it once in a while but usually just use a bench stone freehand & then finish with crock sticks since it's faster/less set up etc.

I might order the blade clamp myself but all you have to do is measure your angle then fasten the clamp and boom 30, 45, 60 degrees if you wanted or even if you wanted to leave one at 45 and one at 30 you could! i had never thought about using sand paper(?) before either. it sure as hell beats a 500 dollar device that is way bulkier. my only issue is it would be hard to do precise angle measurements at that point but as long as its close i wouldn't mind my question is are you just spray painting it for easily seen markings or are you using rustoleum?
Please tell me where I can buy the swivel sliding tubes with locking wing nuts where the sand papers blocks are attached to? Everything else I found them on Ebay. Thank you.
Definitely a awesome job on the "wicked edge" build. With all that work it would be even better if you epoxy say a flat diamond sharpening stones to the block of wood. Would make for a longer term. But it is a awesome build

Mazeingpower I’ve been sharpening for 7 years with my original Wicked Edge stones, and my 100 grit stones are only now starting to seem a bit dull, but every other grit including my ceramics are still good to go. I’ve probably sharpened well over 500 knives on it, it’s more than paid for its self. Diamond stones do not dull fast. 7 years of sharpening and I can probably get at lest 3 more out of these, and then it will cost $70 to replace my 100/200 grits. Sandpaper wears out a lot faster and it’s not free. You would go through well over $70 of sand paper over that time period.

I don't have a wicked edge sharpening system and I don't know who has one. Once I saw somewhere on the internet and just applied the Sharpening principle. I draw drawings in my mind, just during production😉
But, how do you calculate the angles for positioning of your blocks along the lower rod? Same question re sharpeners such as the Edge Pro, if you know that is! Best regards Red

Great sharpener, great skill, great film. I'll just add that the difference in a knife you just sharpened and the same knife you used on a camping trip is a few microns. Really, all you need to do is hit it with some 5000 grit sand paper. 400, 600, and even 2500 are for knives that are damaged, or you decided to re-profile.

1:30 How long do you intend to keep your fingers in original shape? Sorry to be so rude, but IMHO you're making 2 (TWO) big mistakes here. 1: Always clamp your work secure. 2: NEVER wear gloves when drilling/milling/turning. If the (drill)bit gets your glove, you go with it. It's however a very nive tool you've made.

Your correct sir and I like the way that you stated that comment you came across as a smsrt@$$ at first but then humbled yourself and it did exactly what you intended it to alert someone that they could be doing something harmful and may not be aware of the dangers because your 100% correct you never wear gloves or clothing or long hair around rotating machines because they will get you its not a maybe it is a for sure thing and the tool/machine always will win that fight 100 out of 100 times
As I watch this video and see the manpower and equipment required to make this, I now see why the Wicked Edge sharpening system is so expensive, and I guess why it is such a good design
I have a 1x42 belt (and bigger), buffers, a four wheel, variable speed (0-2,500 RPM), reversible grinder with CBN and diamond wheels, along with a few other toys. They are all fine for roughing, but I'll stay with this or my Edge Pro for my expensive pocket knives and kitchen knives.
I'm really pleased with this! Found the die size. Went to Lowe’s and used their thread finder board and it’s M6x1. Hope that helps people
Permanently glue some diamond stones and whetstones to the wooden blocks and bam you got yourself a great set up there. Amazing work. 👌🏼👌🏼

The metal gets too hot to handle with bare hands.
