Quick tip: you can actually use an M1 MacBook with dual screens using a DisplayLink compatible adapter, it negotiates using USB protocols, it takes a hit on resolution but nothing major if multiple screens is a must.
I bought an M1 Macbook pro with 16gb ram back in Dec of 2020 and i've been extremely happy with the purchase, more recently since i've gotten a house with my wife and two kids, it's really nice to have my macbook pro because I can't always be tied to my mancave. Definitely an amazing device, battery life is insane
Agreed. I got my mom a base model M1 Air and, as a huge PC enthusiast whose last Mac product was a 2008 unibody MacBook (which I loved) I'm extremely impressed with it. For the money, it's an incredible machine and I have no faults with it short of my gripes with OS X (which has nothing to do with the hardware itself)
This review is spot on. It's pretty insane you need to spend more for an iPad with a dumbed down OS then can't do anything close to what this M1 Macbook Air can do. This can be had for $800 now and it's an amazing full fledged computer that can do almost anything.
bought a 2800 dollar lenovo last week, saw some videos on it and regret kicked in almost immediately as it was mostly a limp desktop gaming pc. cancelled that and got this and getting delivered tomorrow for 750( i can get a business invoice). with the money i saved i got a ps5 and can buy games for days . pc market is screwed rnow and for absolutely everything besides gaming, macs have gone from overpriced hipster shit to incredible value for money
Holy, this video was amazing. I just bought a refurbished M1 Mac Mini with 16gb of RAM and it's been amazing. I use Lightroom and Final Cut Pro primarily and it hasn't skipped a single beat. Been editing Sony A7riii RAWs and compared to my Macbook Pro, no more 1 second or 3-second delay before the adjustment is applied.
As someone who was forced to use a Macbook at work (PC Master Race), I can confirm everything that is being said in this video to be true. Although I use the Pro model with an actual fan, I have never even heard it spin in almost a year now. If you are having trouble choosing your next machine, Don't, just get a Macbook M1
I used a MBP M1 for a little bit before I found a deal on a souped up MacBook Air, and I got the fans to click on once or twice, but it was maybe 25 db max. Absolutely nothing compared to the 50db Dyson fans in a Windows laptop.
I have the 16GB / 1TB RAM Macbook Air M1 and I can confirm this laptop does everything and more. I have had absolutely 0 issues with it. I use it for writing my books that will never get published, hammering out code, running docker containers, and all the usual office needs (email, pdfs, MS Office, etc...). I also play games on it occasionally but the list of games that you can play on it is very small and rather disappointing, which is the only downside to this machine for me. That said, I do have my nintendo switch for all my "gaming on the go" purposes... Also worth noting that I have a linux workstation that I use for super heavy lifting (scientific computing, long compiles, etc..) and for the small amount of pc gaming I do occasionally. I imagine that the "one external monitor" may really hold someone back from buying this but that is really the only con I see.
Just got a base model m1 air and honestly it's pretty good. Best screen for the price range, portability is good, battery is good, I have a blade 15.6 with 2070 for my main rig at home (and for trips) and the mac is complete fine for daily driving.
It’s amazing what the M1 can do if specced right. Amazing productivity with light gaming on the same device. This is really a dream laptops for students and people alike.

I've used various computers over the years as a personal machine: 7 windows laptops (~2001 HP, ~2005 HP, ~2007 (ish) Vaio, 2010 Lenovo, ~2012 HP, ~2018 Lenovo) and 3 Macs (~2007 macbook, 2012 imac, 2015 imac, ). I've bought and sold a multitude of other higher end machines that I just got really good deals on and made some pocket change through flipping and I recently got the base model M1 Macbook air. It's hands down the best machine i've ever had. Favorite laptop thus far - - MAYBE my first HP kind of compares as it was a decked out top of the line custom laptop when it was purchased new - but this M1 chip is an absolute game changer. My wife is a pc user and flipped out a little bit over the fact that a base mac costs more than her top of the line windows machine but i think she's coming around after seeing how fast it really is.........and probably mostly bc it frees up the xbox since I can cloud game on it - which works really well for me. I don't even have fiber internet and I've had no issue running multiplayer online shooters. I know some machines can struggle with the connection but I guess I got lucky with that. I'm not saving anything on the hard drive. I keep a 500gb solid state drive plugged into that I try to save everything to and hopefully that keeps it running fast for a while.

My iPhone 6 3.5mm jack has actually usable clean output, compared to the noticble hiss that gets worse when charging on my Legion 5 Pro and S10. I also prefer the sound tuning on Apple speakers, whether they are on an iPad, iPhone or Macbook
The MacBook Air M1 base model is perfect for someone who isn't doing anything power hungry, at my work place some people actually use the MacBook air as their work laptop. We do a lot of web-based things. Most of them run the 8gb but some do have the 16gb. I want to get it but was thinking which one the 8gb or 16gb.
Got a question for you because you're coming from windows. Have you tried cleaning off smudge on your MacBook? Have you found removing smudges to be harder on it than your windows laptops? Thanks
I just got this lovely machine this weekend for $900 and absolutely I love it. Huge upgrade from the 2015 Air I had. The only purpose of my Mac is to do some light music production and video editing.
the base model is (near) perfect - I do everything on it... it's my main work machine (office applications) sometimes - when I have everything open, lot of safari tabs, numerous long pdf's etc.. I feel some limitations from the 8gb of ram but nothing dramatic (and it's my only 'negative'). It outpaces my previous Macbook pro in all categories. Am also a huge fan and user of the seamless integration with my iPad. Storage - for me is not an issue, with the cloud and fast ssd's... My previous gold standard was the MacBook Air 2013 - battery was epic on that one, but it was underpowered (even editing a large word doc was sometimes difficult) so I had to upgrade to a MacBook Pro. With the M1, the Air has all the power I need, an excellent screen and a great battery...
Have to say, I bought mine back when they came out and have been nothing but impressed with it. It nails everything I do and does it whilst looking and sounding great. For the money there's just no decision to make. Buy one, you'll absolutely love it.
Even in 2024, the macbook air is an absolute power house. I recently stopped gaming, and focused on productivity. This laptop does everything you want it to do, and then a little bit more. Couldn't be happier about it. It just works.
Ordered a new Macbook Air M1 a couple of days ago. This will be my first ever Macbook. I decided to future proof it, so I went with the 8-Core CPU, 8-Core GPU model, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD. I'm very excited to be receiving it. Currently on its way over from China.
Future proofing it is a great idea. 8GB of RAM is already not enough in 2021. Even with the unlimited page file on Macbooks it isn't enough. I just hope that these Macbooks will survive for longer than 3 years. They are very unreliable since 2014.
Cannot agreee more, sold my 27’ iMac, 15’ MBP, only regret is not getting 16GB. I have a lot of tabs for research, need more ram, only thing I’d get after this is when the 16’ comes out 🔥

I got the MacBook Pro M1 with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD. I think it was a good choice but I don't know how a MacBook Air M1 with 8 GB of RAM would perform in my daily use. But I hear the fan of the Pro very often, so I think it was a good choice.
Cinematic tech reviews by Hardware Canucks are both informative & mesmerizing. It is a perfect combination of art & information. Superb content & elevated camera work, lighting, color, & framing is magnificent. Great job!
I was interested in the Macbook Air M1 when it came out, but I still had my Macbook Pro 13" 2014 which I was able to put together by buying different used parts. But the screen started to mess up on it. I saw that the base model of the m1 was on sale for $799 at Micro Center. So I went and checked out some of these long term reviews like yours, and I decided to pick it up. I am loving it so far. The speakers are mind blowing for their small form factor, the keyboard is really good as well. The battery is great, and even with only 8GB of ram, things have been performing great, I am able to multi-task as much as one would need to on a device like this. I can even do some retro emulation and some newer games. I am getting some drop outs here and there with my wifi, but it might be the fault of my wifi more so than the laptop. Also I agree with you that 256GB isn't really enough, but the base model is the one that was the most discounted at Micro Center. For gaming and more intensive work, I have my recently built Windows PC. Ryzen 5600x, 16Gb of 3600mhz ram, and a 3060TI. I even will remote from my Macbook if I am at school or somewhere else, to my machine or PS4 at home to play some games. So for pretty much the same use case as you, surfing the web, basic productivity, watching videos, and even some light gaming, this device is a great deal.
I junked my Lenovo all in one I bought 5 years ago and replaced it with a late 2013 iMac 27 inch. It’s truly amazing how the reliability is so much better than a Windows PC. Same with the phones. Android maybe last 1 1/2 years. iPhone 7 Plus last 6 years. And it still works just fine. I just wanted to upgrade to 13 pro max.
I love how everything is so snappy on these machines, and also that you can run ios apps. But I think I'll wait for the 2022 model. Just switched to a heavy windows laptop (legion 7) for heavier work but I still have my macbook pro sitting around, not really using its capabilities, which I could sell for this. This would be the perfect portable private machine. I hope they use the same colors as on the imacs and ipads, that'd look beautiful!
okay I must pause the video and say that you're outdone yourself, it feels like you hire a DP. I think this is the absolute best production in a channel of this kind and even some channels that teach video stuff 🤘🔥
I completely agree with what Dimitry has said. I got a 16gb/256gb MBPro (1500€). i have owned pretty good laptops and also custom built pcs, but the new MB is the computer that I love the most to use. MacOS is way better than Windows IMO, I also like Linux for programming purposes, but MacOS also is very good (terminal and good support) for that and easier overall. It performs great while being virtually silent, this doesn't affect the battery, which is amazing (I think it's the best in any laptopI). The peripherals are also good, the trackpad is unmatched, i never feel like I need to use an external mouse; the keyboard is pretty usable too. The screen doesn't disappoint as well, good resolution, brightness, the aspect ratio and apple's text scaling makes it feel bigger than it should since more stuff fits in the screen. Some things that I can understand that some people might not like is the only 2 usbc ports, which force you to use dongles and limits connectivity. Being able to connect only 1 display can also be a deal breaker. Idc about these things that much so not a problem for me. Build quality is solid af, feels very well built, although since it's aluminium u have to be careful with chipping it or small dents from bumping into things when carrying it around. It's not the thinnest or lightest but good enough. Along with the design which I like a lot. Overall, I think that the Air is a better buy since the performance is very similar, the TouchBar is not indispensable (it's usefull if u customize it with something like BetterTouchTools, but not in it's default state) and the screen despite being slightly worse on the Air is still very good.
Problem with the MacBook air is the the prices go very steep for minor upgrades selection....for basic and medium tasks the base model is very good for the price. Another major problem is the future upgradability.... They should at least let us swap the SSD with normal tools
The M1 Air is just awesome. I honestly can't find a reason getting the Pro over it, unless you run an extensive program for like 6 hours straight, or really need to play as well.

I have the Intel Quad i-5, and I’d trade out happily for the M1 air…the Intel units get quite hot just doing standard workload, and around 5-6 hours into a work day, the battery is pretty low. I’ve noticed Microsoft Teams burns a lot of resources- so that may be the reason my battery doesn’t last

I used a MBP M1 for a little bit before I found a deal on a souped up MacBook Air, and I got the fans to click on once or twice, but it was maybe 25 db max. Absolutely nothing compared to the 50db Dyson fans in a Windows laptop.

Does the MacPro model has a fan and the Air does not?

Future proofing it is a great idea. 8GB of RAM is already not enough in 2021. Even with the unlimited page file on Macbooks it isn't enough. I just hope that these Macbooks will survive for longer than 3 years. They are very unreliable since 2014.

I’m waiting for the 16in MBP w/ Apple silicone

But I think I'll wait for the 2022 model. Just switched to a heavy windows laptop (legion 7) for heavier work but I still have my macbook pro sitting around, not really using its capabilities, which I could sell for this. This would be the perfect portable private machine.
