Tuomas and Tarja had performed in school music projects. Tarja had, I would say typical young girls voice, nothing special yet. Couple of years later Tuomas started assembling the band. The original idea was to make atmospheric music, but there was an unexpected thing what changed everything: ------ In 1996, Tarja was on her Christmas holiday in Kitee. "I had spent the semester in the church music department of the Sibelius Academy in Kuopio. It was a really cold day in Kitee. Tuomas rang our doorbell, I remember him wearing a green parka and combat boots. He modestly told me he wanted to talk to me about something. He had brought a couple of cassettes with him and asked me if I could maybe listen to them. The music turned out to be really beautiful." Tuomas remembers that Tarja immediately agreed to join the band. Having no clear idea on the vocal melodies, Tuomas basically gave Tarja the task to figure them out herself. "There were three songs on the demo, and one of them was called 'Nightwish'", Tarja recalls. "Tuomas gave me the lyrics and backing tracks and said that he had a certain melody in mind, but I was welcome to come up with my own interpretation." At the time, the goals were not set too high. "The whole thing was supposed to be just an experiment - we'd record a demo and maybe sent it out to some record companies", Tuomas says. "There were no plans whatsoever to play gigs or to aim towards anything more serious. Tarja figured it would take maybe two days for her to sing the songs in the studio." "Tuomas called me and said that we have a vocalist", engineer Tero Kinnunen recalls. "I remember the Saturday morning we sat there waiting for her. A car pulled up to the yard, and out came a woman wearing a fur coat. I thought it was some granny in her thirties, but then I saw her face and noticed that it definitely wasn't the case. I believe Tarja was 17 or 18 at the time. The Huvikeskus studio in Kitee wasn't anything like it is today. The control room was in the theater, so we set up a mic there and started recording." Tarja went through the vocal melodies with the boys, and when the time came for her to start singing, the guys' jaws dropped to the floor. "It was such a shock for us when she first started to sing", Tuomas thinks back with awe. "I thought we were going to hear a clear, young, beautiful, girly voice in the style of Kari Rueslåtten or something - instead, Tarja had a high-pitched, bombastic voice that was already very dramatic and classical. She surprised us completely." Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996 - 2006
Fun fact Andrew Lloyd Webber said this was the best cover of the phantom of the opera he also said that this was what he wanted the phantom of the opera to be.
Oh yes, this is one big reason we old school NW fans really enjoy hearing her voice again and again. All three are good different singers, they must because otherwise they couldn´t be choice of Tuomas.
Tarja is the most operatic of the 3, and yes, her and Marko singing together was awesome. This performance was in Helsinki 2005. The DVD was called End of an Era because it was Tarja's last Nightwish show. After the concert, the guys gave her the open letter dismissing her from the band after 9 years and 5 albums. Andrew Lloyd Weber loved this too, he has said that it is his favorite or one of his favorite versions. Since you want to hear more from Tarja, try Wishmaster, The Siren, Planet Hell, NEMO, Sleeping Sun, or Wish I Had An Angel. All from this same show.
A little additional info: This DVD was recorded during their final concert of the "Once Upon a Tour" tour, promoting their fifth album, "Once." As you noted, this was her last performance with them - after the show had completed, Tarja was fired by the band. She had no idea this was also her final concert with them. As noted below, Andrew Lloyd Weber stated that this was his favorite non-traditional rendition of the song.
Tarja is amazing. Floor does a cool version too. I agree all 3 are great and add a different flavor. I became a Nightwish fan during the Tarja era and still loving them too this day.
Tarja, she's so ♥️ Thank you for including her, too, now. Take a peek at the from wishes to eternity concert at some point, it's baby Nightwish! Wanderlust and FantasMic Part 3 have sweet moments with young tuomas, emppu and tarja.
"Have all 3 sung together". No, but after Tarja parted ways with Nightwish, Floor did duet live with Tarja on a cover of a Gary Moore song that Nightwish had previously covered during the Tarja era. The song is called Over The Hills And Far Away. Tarja and Floor's performance is available on TH-cam but unfortunately it is not high quality as it was filmed by a fan. Stay safe 🤘 ✌️
Hell yes! This is Tarja! My gothic youth)) Floor is incredible, she can sing anything. But Tarja is the golden age of Nightwish symphonic songs! This is a video from the "End of an Era" concert (2005). I recommend watching it whole)) And if you want to be even more amazed by the sound and visual diversity, check next time and create a reaction to the song Creek Mary's Blood from this concert) you won't regret it) or High Hopes (Pink Floyd cover) where Marko sings solo. Wishmaster, Planet Hell, The Siren. Damn!!! they all great and legendary!)
Tarjaaa... the way her last vibrato matches the *exact* beat of Jukka's drums, insane insane💘The best way to enjoy Nightwish is to find something to appreciate about each singer because they all brought so so much, and this way there are no limits to your enjoyment of the 25 years of their music! 🥰Thank you for checking out all of them!! p.s I agree with everyone who mentioned Deep Silent Complete and Wishmaster, those two are very Tarja songs. Her voice just gives them so much atmosphere
This concert led, eventually, to the "Poet and the Pendulum" as Tarja was fired after this show. It amazes me how Tuomas is capable of taking a traumatic experience, as it was for all involved, and turn it into a masterwork of emotion. That's just what a genius does, express things we feel in a way that helps us cope with our own feelings. Looking forward to when you reach that particular work of art. ALWAYS enjoy your reactions, it allows me to re-live my first time hearing the song as well.
This whole concert is super intense...they played like this may have been their last show! From thos End Of An Era 2005 show, a really cool vocal from Tarja, and some shredding by Emppu...The Siren.
Hi, this song was the first song of Nightwish I ever heard years ago. My reaction was excatly the same as yours. I was blown away. Tarja and Nightwish was something new on that time. Especially Tarja was a great idol for those young ones as seen on this video. That's why those tears in their eyes. Wishmaster sang by Tarja would be a good choise to react to. In that song Emppu has nice guitarsolos. Thanks for this reaction, it was fun to see you liked this. See you, take care.
"This is the best rabbit hole i've ever gone down" same!!! I've only been going though their albums recently, too, and yes, obsessed. And your reactions are so fun and wholesome to watch, thanks for sharing!! For Tarja, our Goth Queen the best quality for songs are from the End of an Era (2005) and From Wishes to Eternity concert (2000)! The latter has a v soft spot in my heart, they were super young back then and it has a certain kind of magic and energy to it:))
Have you ever heard it quite like this? I doubt it. Now you understand why the old fans still love her and the early Nightwish era so much. So unique. Be careful about some of those rabbit holes. Loved it JingerSlapz.
Lmao that start was hilarious and so cute! I'm glad you left it unedited 😊 when it comes to the song, it is beautiful indeed, Tarja's voice is perfect for this song, and Marko gives the Phantom an extra "villain" vibe with that raspy voice of his 🔥💖🔥💖
For more Tarja you could start with this : Nightwish - Swanheart - From Wishes To Eternity - Remastered HD th-cam.com/video/0sc-VNppXhs/w-d-xo.html then "Walking in the air" and "Deep Silent Complete" from the same concert, these are songs that were also never sung by Floor so no need to compare them here. Then as a faster song check her version of "She is my sin" and then just watch the whole show, like i did numerous times in the last 21 years.
Great reaction. Best version of Phantom you will hear anywhere. It's what the original should have been, but never was. I urge you to react to High Hopes from the same concert. It's Nightwish's tribute to Pink Floyd. Marko is the sole lead vocalist on that one..... girl, you gotta do it ... next! It kicks ass so damn hard
@@JyngerSlapz you're welcome.... you're doing great with your channel.... I love watching your extremely genuine reactions to such a very special band. Just wait till you get to Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley live - prior research advised - and 2 boxes of tissues) and The Greatest Show on Earth (Wembley or Tampere).... those two are the true masterpieces. For now, I stick by High Hopes.... it's sooooo good. Have a good Sunday, hugs from Wales UK
I haven't heard of Anette and Tarja meeting, but Tarja and Floor have been friends for years. They've sung together at least once at one of Tarja's solo shows. I believe they met when Floor's first group, After Forever, and Nightwish toured together. I think Anette and Floor met when Nightwish toured with Floor's second group, ReVamp, but I've never seen anything that indicates those two had anything other than a professional relationship.
Hello JyngerSlapz. Tarja was performing a show in Pratteln, Switzerland. Her band fired up The Phantom of the Opera. Marco walked out to join her in a duet. Oh my gosh. Tarja and Marco reunited to perform the Phantom for the 1st time in 18 years. It's different, just like we should expect everything these beautiful humans do. Oh. And her dress is hotter than the center of the sun.
I always enjoy your reactions. I will never again be able to watch these performances for the first time and it is such a pleasure to watch people like you get so excited about them. Thanks!
Hi, I'm 67 and remember hearing this back in the day. For some reason I forgot them and about two years ago got reunited. Like you said, it would interesting to see all three on stage. I have yet to reach the bottom of the rabbit hole. Keep going! And get a case of tissue, you'll need it.😉
“Mariah Carey who?” Exactly. Tarja, Annette and Floor are amazing at what they do. Have you done Floors version with Henk Poort on Beste Zangers? I can’t remember. If not you should!
It is important to note that Tarja & Floor are good friends & have been for a long time. There is some disagreement among fans about who is better but the ladies themselves are close friends & admirers of each other. It is amazing the one band was able to find & hire each of these women in just one lifetime.
It is my uinderstanding that Floor even checked in with Tarja prior to joining NW to make sure she would be cool with it. Tarja gave her enthusiastic blessing. Floor wasn't good friends with Anette, so she didn't feel the need to check with her...but I suspect Anette wouldn't be cool with it, since she said she didn't want Floor to stand in for her when she was sick/pregnant mid-tour 2012...she knew it would be the end of her time with NW if Floor took the stage.
I have a soft spot for Anette and Floor is obviously amazing. But the Tarja era gigs were ridiculously good. And Tarja deserves credit for starting the band with Tuomas. Nightwish battled through the first two low-selling records until this new genre was firmly there, to the benefit of Epica and other followers... They were really trailblazers.
All hale the REAL TRUE QUEEN 👑 of Nightwish and of ALL FEMALE SYMPHONIC METAL SINGERS!!!!!!!, the very beautiful looking and very unique voice of the enchanting TARJA!!!!!!!!!😀👍👍👍👍👍🤘
Just seen a comment referring to ‘creek Mary’s blood’. Yes please react to this. Creek Mary is one of the tracks that even Tuomas thought as ‘epic’, but is relatively rarely played. Another Tarja performance and I am sure you will enjoy it.
Tarja singing Everdream at this same End of an Era Concert is awesome and now you know what’s to follow after the show - watch Tuomas it will break your heart. Even in this song, watch it the start again and look at Jukka on drums with his head in his hands - they had all been friends for a long time 😢
You come to watch a Nightwish video. You come to see Tarja sing but wind up falling in love with Marco. This is by far the best version of The Phatom of the Opera. Loved your reaction. Keep tripping down this wonderful rabbit hole.
Marvelous reaction, thank you, it is great to see, that you become in Love with Nightwish, react to Your's An Empty Hope, next time, you'r gonna love it, love you take care, till next.
This was a wonderful reaction, Jynger! Although I don't like Tarja's voice at all (taste is a personal thing), I watched the whole video, because your joy is contagious. Without Tarja there would not be the Nightwish we now know and love and for that she deserves a lot of credit. Like you rightfully said they all add something different to this amazing band and in that light it's not important who your favorite is.
Thank you my friend! The talent that this band produces amazes me every time I hear a “new to me” song from them! Always something different and wonderful😊 I definitely can’t hold back the joy they bring me like so many of you! My heart and soul is grateful for discovering this magical band❤️
Happy to see you also reacted to a Nightwish song with Tarja as singer. One of the band's most inconic live performances, and Tarja was great here. However, I wished you'd do more reactions with Tarja instead of Floor. Tarja just brings different vibes to NW songs, and some of their old songs simply sound better with Tarja than Floor which isn't meant as drag on Floor's voice (I love her power, range, precision, and stage presence). But songs like Ever Dream, Nemo, and The Kinslayer fit better to Tarja's style. I think you haven't reacted to the latter two yet. There are live versions of Nemo and The Kinslayer both with Tarja and Floor. Please, do the Tarja versions from the 'End of an Era' concert.
Great reaction! This is the only version of Phantom of the Opera I'll ever need. I just wish we had the rest of it! All three singers are amazing in their own right, even though I am partial to Floor. It is unbelievable, the talent that is and was in this band. Cool decorations by the way!
Fun fact: Nightwish didn't perform Phantom of the Opera for a very long time (I think 12 years or so). Just this week, they recorded their concert in Amsterdam (probably for another live DVD). Turns out, Henk Poort was there and they performed the Phantom of the Opera again! 🙂 With a bit of luck, there will be more stuff to react to. :-)
This was one of those world view shattering performances for me. I actually saw this video before I experienced Wacken 2013 full concert video. Made me start to realize the small world of American broadcast radio music I was living in the last 50 years. I doubt I would have ever discovered Nightwish but for a fan made video of Halestorm's Daughters of Darkness.
A woman with a beautiful smile and some great music, this day just got better! Nightwish with Tarja - never gets old! So beautiful, so creative, unique, artistic! And I don`t mean anything bad by it, but I`m gonna say it anyway: I`m kinda sad for the original Nightwish, or the original Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, Two And A Half Men etc. Everyone of these fantastic creations set the standards so high, and then someone decided to press the self - destruct button! That`s how we got "things" like The Force Awakens, The Rings Of Power, T&HM with Kutcher and Nightwish with Floor Jansen (the ex singer of After Forever, one of the "warming up" bands for Nightwish). (: So, with the hope in my heart I would like to suggest Wishmaster, or anything else with Tarja...
Great you're reacting to all NW era's. Every singer is great and brought us so much awesome music! For more Tarja check out "Sleeping sun" ( it's a Tarja Song for me. I love Floor but it's Tarja for me in the refrain), "Wishmaster", "The siren", "Ever dream" or "I wish I had an Angel"
Watching Jynger's head explode is always fun. Tarja is a fantastic singer. That was one of the band's biggest issues when they fired Tarja after this show. How do you replace a voice like that? Annette is a wonderful singer, but she was not Tarja. Floor would have been the logical replacement at that time, but she was already involved in her own band. One of the things I love about these bands is the incredible ability of the singers in metal bands. Another band that you have not done yet is Amaranthe with their singer Elize Ryd. Their songs Archangel and Amaranthine are fantastic. And their song Endlessly may be the most beautiful wedding song I've ever heard. I would stick with their music videos as the sound quality of most of the live performances isn't fabulous.
Hooray! Normally I don't see your reactions until days later, so it's nice to catch one in the first hour it was released! This, as you've already been told, was Tarja's (great pronunciation BTW!) last performance. In fact less than an hour after this concert she was publically fired from Nightwish in a public letter signed by every other member of the band. There was a lot of history, miscommunication and heartbreak behind that, and I don't think anyone handled the situation particularly well. It took 15 years before Tarja was on speaking terms with all her former bandmates. (She has always got on well with Floor.) Fans of Nightwish were aghast, and much vitriol was directed at Tuomas, who the controversy eventually made suicidal. Because of this he wrote his masterpiece "The Poet and the Pendulum" which he calls his musical suicide, his only alternative to actual suicide. Anyway, this song is an excellent example of Marko's ability to harmonise with other singers. I hear you when you say that this band is perfect! I only heard of them in 2019, and I envy you hearing so many classics for the first time!
I've been used to Tarja for a while now but Marko has never sung better than this 'End of an Era' gig. Not sure if you've covered 'High Hopes' from this same show yet? It's Nightwish's tribute to Pink Floyd - but he and the guys were sublime in this - they all seemed to ascend to some higher state of perfection in that song. Anyway, getting carried away as always. Of course Floor did Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poorte on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers' which is guaranteed to send you to another level! As always, love your reactions, keep em coming and take good care of yourself 😃
This one is an epic piece of the band's history, and she is a huge part of it. She, like Floor, have the gift of engaging the audience, which continues to this day with her solo work. Marko is amazing as well, and the now-famous Pink Floyd cover of 'High Hopes' comes from this same show. By the way, it took multiple listens before it struck me, but listen to Emppu's guitar line when Tarja starts the escalation at the end. He's one of the best. Thanks, Jynger!
Floor and Tarja have sung together on stage. Performed a cover of Gary Moore's song "Over the hills and far away". Nightwish covered it during Tarja's era, and Tarja kept performing it since.
Actually not true cause truth is Floor is way more versatile so it us not propaganda but truth. That been said some songs feel better in a more operatic style allthough on some others it seems kinda pretentious. And of course on the old ones that sound better as operatic Tarja is a better choice but on some old ones benefitting from a more naruralistic approach or rockier sound Floor feels more at home.
There is a live show with Tarja and Floor Jansen on stage together song Over The Hills and Far A way live show in a Tarja concert, awesome thanks request 😀
When it comes to the albums, this is how I rank them. I loved Floor in After Forever etc and Anette's solo stuff is amazing but to me Tarja was Nightwish. Seems Tuomas is a diva 1. Tarja 2. Anette 3. Floor
This song is how I heard Nightwish in the 90's introduced by my Mom. But I only remember this and Wish I Had an Angel. Sadly forgot about them but reintroduced by a reaction of Ghost Love Score with Floor a month ago. Took me a minute to realize it was the same band!:I love this unique band! My Mom was excited to hear them again!
I must urge this message to you! I believe that Not having tissues at hand, prevents you from letting out feelings you shouldn't hold back. It's not seintificly proved that I'm right on this...but... Also, Thank you for reacting in a higher pace to Nightwish now. Your pronunciation of Tarja was spot on in the beginning. Much Love to you and Ukraine 🌻🌻🌻💛💙💛
Tarja = Queen of the Metal Queens
She has many great songs after Nightwish. A nice dark Christmas album.

Some good tarja are the siren, wishmaster, and over the hills and far away, all live

then "Walking in the air" and "Deep Silent Complete" from the same concert, these are songs that were also never sung by Floor so no need to compare them here.
Thank you! Well, I do love Nightwish and Pink Floyd! 😊🤘🏻
I Concur, would be an absolute Expirience!
Tarja was the best singer they will ever have. She and Marko and the rest of the band really killed it here. Epic performance. 👌❤️🙏
Thanks!
This was TRUE NIGHTWISH with QUEEN 👑 TARJA, at it's VERY BEST!!!!😀👍🤘🤘🤘
Deep Silent Complete, it's a song that defines Tarja's style, Tarja, Annette, Floor, ....Nightwish
Yes I concur! Not enough reacted to. For this one I actually like the album version best for its crispness and great mix.
I remember hearing Tarja's voice back in 2000. I was hooked 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻🔥
I haven’t yet but need too😊
@@JyngerSlapz It’s truly amazing! I hope you get to it soon.
Or the live version from her solo show in Amsterdam last year. Floor posted it last week.
@@chriso6719 I love the BZ version best just for the reaction of the other singers on the couches.
@@okiejohn3925 only problem with that is some reactors have had BZ blocked lately.
We born to Nightwish with Tarja, conquer countries whit Anette and touch the stars whit Floor
Cheers beautiful girl
Oh and I never felt happier ever before than while watching You smiling to this masterpiece
Thank you so much!!
I was working in that concert. Crazy emotional rollercoaster this one 🔥🤘❤️🇫🇮
Each amazing Woman bring Tuomas's vision to life
I have a soft spot for Anette and Floor is obviously amazing. But the Tarja era gigs were ridiculously good.
And Tarja deserves credit for starting the band with Tuomas. Nightwish battled through the first two low-selling records until this new genre was firmly there, to the benefit of Epica and other followers... They were really trailblazers.
Tarja "The Original" Turunen. Obviously she is great, she created the whole genre.
Thanks for your reaction and greetings from Finland . 🇫🇮👏
Favorite Nightwish era ❤. Great reaction 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Definitely check out her cover of Muses 'supremacy'. It's insane
yes this is happens when the Phantom goes to Metall 🤘
Epic. The most beautiful mayhem ever.
All hale the REAL TRUE QUEEN 👑 of Nightwish and of ALL FEMALE SYMPHONIC METAL SINGERS!!!!!!!, the very beautiful looking and very unique voice of the enchanting TARJA!!!!!!!!!😀👍👍👍👍👍🤘
Marko blows me away whenever I listen to this, he hits the high notes to perfection
Going to see Nightwish in 4 weeks, bring it on!!
So awesome my friend!! Enjoy🤘❤
@@JyngerSlapz And we are grateful to you for sharing that joy.
Thank you for all of the amazing reactions! Luv ya sis 🤗
Aww thank you so much!!! Love ya too my brother!
With a bit of luck, there will be more stuff to react to. :-)
Marko is such a beastly phantom!!! Makes his angel sing until she drops! "Wish I Had An Angel!".... Emppu's outro too!
This is Andreew Llyod Webers favorite cover, and how he said it should be, which is epic.
i've seen this reaction about 20+ times and i love it
p.s. and it has the best intro)))))))))))))
Tarja is a great singer but Marko is just awesome in this.!
As always, love your reactions, keep em coming and take good care of yourself 😃
you said that right.
call her Queen of Elfs
This one is an epic piece of the band's history, and she is a huge part of it. She, like Floor, have the gift of engaging the audience, which continues to this day with her solo work. Marko is amazing as well, and the now-famous Pink Floyd cover of 'High Hopes' comes from this same show. By the way, it took multiple listens before it struck me, but listen to Emppu's guitar line when Tarja starts the escalation at the end. He's one of the best. Thanks, Jynger!
IMO, Marco steals the show on this performance. His vocals when he goes high with Tarja are pretty amazing!
Nightwish have a way for making a cover song seem like they wrote it :-)
Floor and Tarja have sung together on stage.

Over 15 years ago. This was 2005 consert in Helsinki
Thanks ❤
You're welcome my friend 😊and thank you for watching❤
There is a live show with Tarja and Floor Jansen on stage together song Over The Hills and Far A way live show in a Tarja concert, awesome thanks request 😀
When it comes to the albums, this is how I rank them. I loved Floor in After Forever etc and Anette's solo stuff is amazing but to me Tarja was Nightwish. Seems Tuomas is a diva
1. Tarja
2. Anette
😊🇫🇮❤️🎼✨💙🤘
My first touch, to this Incredible Band... loooooong ago ❤️🎶✨
Much Love to you and Ukraine
🌻🌻🌻💛💙💛
And Marko my god, fantastic every time i hear this... Thanx Jynger 😘
