Forgive me, as a _very_ ambitious hobby chef I would like to note something that might safe you a buck or two. As far as I can tell, the olive oil you are using is not meant for cooking, at least not for frying. The beneficial fatty acids of cold pressed extra virgin olive oil (evoo) are only stable up to about 130°C. The Maillard reaction which causes the browning _starts_ at about 140°C. The olive oil you are using is most likely meant for dressing, be it for salads or pasta aglio, olio e peperoncino and the likes. If you just do it for the taste, you can use refined olive oil (warm pressed). Though it is less strong in taste, due to the way it is produced the yield is much higher and hence it is more affordable. You might want to give it a try and safe some bucks.
Knife skill tip: On your cutting hand, keep your index finger in, not on the blade. It can put the knife off balance, and your finger can slip and get cut. Love your video!
Loved your video! I have a suggestion for chopping…when holding your knife, hold it like you are shaking hands with the knife. Don’t point your finger. You’ll have more control over your chopping. Try it and see how it works for you. Can’t wait to see more videos from you!
Old video by now, but if you want to REALLY have firm tofu, freezing it will change the texture to be firmer when you reheat it (and more akin to meat, IMO)
537 yen $3.65 usd for strawberries?! That’s amazing here in hawaii they are $6-$7 for the same amount I never buy fresh anymore because frozen is cheaper but I love fresh strawberries. All of those prices are so much better then here! I wish I had such a fresh quality selection for those prices I love fruits and vegetables.
I love that you're making cooking vids! That's awesome, especially since everyone needs to start reducing eating out so much due to inflation. One suggestion: the reason you're finding it so difficult to perform knifework is that you're seated, and your targets are at chest-level, instead of hara-level. Maybe consider standing when using your knife, or get a cushion or sitting pad to elevate your arms when you're wielding your knife? Did you ever get any of the houchou from your trip to the factory?

That was a fun trip to the supermarket 🙂. I liked the prepared meals you could get at the ones in my old Japanese neighborhood. Saved a lot of time and money. These prices didn't feel too different from where I'm living now in the US. Some things are more, and some things are less expensive, so it kind of balances out. The dishes you made all looked great! I'll have to try making some of them. I think I can get most of the ingredients here, but not in such great variety. I think most stores here have one, two, or three max varieties of tofu, for example. Same deal with miso. The local Whole Foods actually carries daikon, which I was happy to find. I used to make Caspian Sea yogurt at home. I remember my local Japanese markets carried it and you can actually just add a little to milk to start a new batch. It's a type of yogurt that you can make at room temperature, so it does't require any special equipment and is easy to make. My favorite way to prepare natto is mixed with a little soy sauce, a quail egg, and chopped spring onions 👌. Thanks for another fun vlog!

If you have some space I recommend planting your own herbs: Mint, rosemary, basil etc. They are so easy to grow and will produce more than you can ever use. And before the cold season you can dry and preserve them!
You might have better luck at costco (if you have one close) for Greek yogurt. That's where expats get it in Seoul. The membership for Costco is half the price in Korea than in the US.

Hey Seerasan! Good vibes in your videos, I enjoy them after a long workday. Quick tip: You mentioned extra firm tofu and that you are ok with "plain" flavors... how about getting a Tofu Press? I struggled🙄 as well finding firm tofu, but now with the press I just have it ready every single day and add any flavor I want! 🤭. Hope your every day is a great day! 😊
There is so much tofu woooow. I expected strawberries to be pricey but they seem reasonable. That udon looked so goood!!! As a I recall you seem to favor/like Udon way more than Ramen right?
In case you're wanting to save on yogurt, it's REALLY easy to make at home with just milk and some starter yogurt, especially if you've got an instant pot. I usually make some when I can't get through my milk fast enough.
Generally extra virgin olive oil isnt best for cooking with. It has a very low smoke point, 325-350f (165-175c) and can become acrid when cooked with high temperatures. If you want to cook with olive oil, make sure you are getting unrefined. Extra virgin is best for things like salad dressings or finishing oils.
Just FYI, the negi you bought are actually what's commonly known as leeks. If you want spring onions those are a completely different vegetable altogether.
In the Japanese sweets section, “Yomogi Mochi?” was “Kashiwa Mochi”. Greek yogurt is expensive, so I recommend making your own by draining cheap plain yogurt overnight. I saw the wife of the Greek ambassador to Japan on TV once, who also drained yogurt at home and made it herself!
My favorite part of shopping at Japanese supermarkets are the 6pm bento discounts and the shokugan (candy toy) Gundam figures. In LA we have Nijiya, Mitsuwa, Seiwa and Tokyo Central markets.
If you can tell what the vinegar/ dressing for raw shredded cabbage is called that I used to buy at the supermarkets in Japan then I will make all my friends subscribe to you 😂😭 it might be Chinese? 🤔
Good progress with your knife technique. You may find it easier to cut if you stand up so that your elbows are slightly higher with respect to your chopping surface.
The cucumber juice sounds really good. My favorite sports drink is the cucumber lime flavored gatorade, so I bet it has similar vibes. Also, I wonder how that spicy chili condiment you bought compares to momofuku chili crisp? It looks similar but that's the only kind I've been able to find locally. It's great in ramen and I also add it to my gyoza dipping sauce lol.
The basket trolley/cart thing looks so handy... my grocery stores need to get with the program and get those! Oh man that S&B chili crisp stuff is freaking addictive addictive!! I only wish it came in a bigger jar lol. The dishes all look so good and I really want to try the cucumber juice, that sounds perfect for summer. Also your sparkly chopsticks are so cute! ✨ Thanks for the lovely video!
That was so fun to watch. I love your videos. Supermarket produce doesnt look anything like that here in the US. Atleast not where I shop. 2 floors, so cool.
This was the first time I watched you. Interesting enough to subscribe and even try some of that. I do make Miso soup in a similar fashion. I look forward to your next video. 😋
The Bulgarian yogurt that you said is so popular, but you just can’t understand why is so famous, because it’s of very high quality, very appreciated by people who understand what a good yogurt is and it contains live bacteria called Lactobacillus bulgaricus, it’s a wonderful probiotic and we’re very proud of it. I encourage everyone to try it.
Great idea showing us the cooking as well as the shopping after you asked us to vote on a topic. Question though: did you sit because you were filming? It looks so awkward…. I don’t think I could manage a knife very well. Maybe when I am too old to stand I will, but for now I’ll keep standing in the kitchen.
Just watched your video and it was amazing. You can substitute Hoisin sauce with oyster sauce. We had that in Singapore but I always substitute with a vegan oyster sauce that taste about the same. Gonna try your recipes. They are so cool. Cheers from Singapore 🎉
fruit and vegg were mad expensive, if i were you i'd be exclusively eating soffritto ''onion celery carrot'', also green onions potatoes and garlic. Soffritto is used in many dishes, why its such a popular combination its because its perfect with tomato sauce. A great cheat is to buy fish sauce and shrimp paste to easily add intensity to your dishes
I saw at least two of my favorite teas that I have imported every couple months… cost me much more than 8 bucks lol. Also if you’re gonna try mapo tofu, Mike Chen had my favorite recipe, Aaron and Clare have a really good one too!

Inflation is a problem everywhere except for China. To make things worse, the Yen is losing value rapidly & showing no signs of stopping.

In case you're wanting to save on yogurt, it's REALLY easy to make at home with just milk and some starter yogurt, especially if you've got an instant pot. I usually make some when I can't get through my milk fast enough.
I might need to look into this, sounds right down my alley!
you should put the miso paste through a soup strainer filter, otherwise you get tiny chunks of miso
Oh interesting! Thanks!
damn, it must be tough cooking here... good on you for still doing your best cooking!
I'm Japanese living in Australia. I'm gonna try the miso udon dish! That looks good :)
Yesss! It's such a tasty, simple dish!
So impressed that you actually eat and seem to enjoy natto hahaha
My favorite part of shopping at Japanese supermarkets are the 6pm bento discounts and the shokugan (candy toy) Gundam figures. In LA we have Nijiya, Mitsuwa, Seiwa and Tokyo Central markets.
15:20 daaaangg that looks good!!
I so enjoy going shopping with other people. This is so fun.
Garlic ra-yu sounds amazing, I wish that was avaliable over here.
I'm excited to try that udon recipe, it looks so yummy! and easy to make 😍
味噌汁は、白味噌9 : 赤味噌1 を混ぜて作るともっと美味しいですよ♩ブレンドコーヒーみたいな感じです♩
The red (you said brown) parts of the salad leaves contain anthocyanins, which are flavonoids, and REALLY good for health.
Cries in Canadian food prices!!! 🥲!! Also great video thank you!!
So fun! I'm so happy grocery shopping with you! Awesome!
Excellent cooking skills. Please do more videos.
If you can tell what the vinegar/ dressing for raw shredded cabbage is called that I used to buy at the supermarkets in Japan then I will make all my friends subscribe to you 😂😭 it might be Chinese? 🤔
Was it the tamenegi (onion) dressing? 🤔
@@seerasan sadly no! It usually has a picture of a cabbage on the bottle, the mystery continues! 🤭🔍
How are those punnets of Strawberries so perfect, I cant remember the last time in OZ, I have ever seen a perfect punnet.
It is enitrely possible to live in Japan and not be a tea lover but Im a Melburnian so I was there for the coffee. Im everywhere for the coffee
The prices are similar to those in Germany. The packaging is also similar, although in Germany the fruit is not packaged as heavily.
Waaa please tell Tokyo Treat Box to ship to Canada. We want!!!
If you do miso soup...you need dashi in it
The Bulgarian yogurt that you said is so popular, but you just can’t understand why is so famous, because it’s of very high quality, very appreciated by people who understand what a good yogurt is and it contains live bacteria called Lactobacillus bulgaricus, it’s a wonderful probiotic and we’re very proud of it. I encourage everyone to try it.
Thanks for sharing this video on your grocery haul!
You need to try the taberu rayu with mini cucumbers, garlic, rice vinegar, and gochujang!
oh my gosh that sounds delish!! will try it
Great idea showing us the cooking as well as the shopping after you asked us to vote on a topic.
Great video Sara have you by any chance tried chimichurri sauce it is a sauce from Argentina!
I don't believe so, but it looks so tasty! Looks easy to make, so I might try it sometime 😆
Nice choice shopping and cooking 👍
quinine so yummy 👅🫶
Nice food shopping and cooking tour!
I saw at least two of my favorite teas that I have imported every couple months… cost me much more than 8 bucks lol. Also if you’re gonna try mapo tofu, Mike Chen had my favorite recipe, Aaron and Clare have a really good one too!
Try to use the „pinch grip“ while holding your knife. It will make life so much easier.
I actually had to double take when I saw sriracha milk. I wondered if that was actually a thing. 😂
Lmaooo yeah that was a typo I only noticed after exporting 😂
olive oil has basically doubled in price in australia too, and its prob not even real olive oil its prob rapeseed oil or something
