    • @the_fat_electrician
      @the_fat_electrician  หลายเดือนก่อน +103

Thanks for waiting. The Mozambique drill is the classic “two to the chest, one to the head.” The drill comes from Mike Rousseau, who developed it after shooting someone twice in the chest with a Browning Hi-Power. That didn’t stop them, and he then shot them in the head. My question is, what does this have to do with .45 ACP and the 1911? The Browning Hi-Power is chambered in 9mm. I feel like you're under the impression that the Browning Hi-Power is a 1911 because they were made by the same man. You literally gave a terrific example of why that opinion is correct. Now, with modern ammunition and hollow points, I don't think .45 ACP has an edge. However, in the early 1900s, which is the context of this video, it absolutely did. Again, thanks for waiting.

@@the_fat_electrician Bingo, the 9mm vs .45 debate can only be addressed IN CONTEXT. Yes, modern home defenders/CPL carriers can use modern expanding (credit to phillips head screwdriver bullets too) ammo, and the gap is essentially closed, with round count advantage going to the 9mm. BUT, when these rounds were created, it was a battle of full metal jacket rounds, with a very decisive victory to the .45. And, flash forward over a century, yep, our military still has no choice other than full metal jacket bullets (Hague convention). So, it's still no contest if you are a military needing a sidearm, the .45 kicks all kinds of sand in the 9mm's face for terminal effectiveness.

I've been shooting since a boy in the late 50's. My great uncle Leo introduced me to a 1882 Colt Single Action Army in 45 Colt. He always said that he could resolve any problems with a slug from a 45. Either with his old SAA, or a 1911 45 Auto. He was a WWI vet, and bounty hunter at the turn of the 20th century. He survived the war, and went on to kill 17 fellons, serving warrants as a part time peace officer and bounty hunter, in the northern plains of our country. He was no lightweight.
1969, I was assigned to a company strength firebase in Vietnam. The only Ranger, amid an infantry unit. Scouted mostly, and took targets of opportunity when available.
Had returned to the firebase after lunch. Been out for three days. Was hungry and tired. Went to the messhall, a half tent/metal roof building. Had my 1911A1 and three mags on me. The cook, a buddy of mine, rustled up something for me. Not long after I was chowing down, our base was hit, and overrun by NVA.
I asked the cook about weapons there, and troops with him. One M16, four mags, and two troops with him. Told him to stay put, and I'd cover the entrance. It was an L shaped wall of sandbags, offering decent cover. I waited for the rush on this building.
After the attack was over, there were 14 NVA down near the messhall. I had five rounds left in my 1911A1.
To this day, when I hear some youngster claim that the 1911 is garbage, and his 9mm Tupperware pistol is supreme, I'll say "Sit down son, and let me tell you something about this so called obsolete pistol."
Many will look like they've just been spanked for being disrespectful. Maybe so. But most will, reluctantly agree that I opened their eyes to the fact that the 45 Auto is a much harder hitting round than the 9mm.
Now, old and retired, I still carry a 1911A1 in 45 Auto. And I damn sure don't feel helpless with it. I still train weekly with it, and my old S&W M28 I carried as a peace officer for years. And I walked away from three shootings during my career as a peace officer.
If I don't have my 45, my 357 is close by....
    Ranger out...
That thud you heard was my dropping the mike on the floor.😒

A little 1911 history, Colt commissiond John Moses Browning to design the 1911 to replace the Navy revolver. He decided to make a point though and his point is how the 1911 affectionately got the nickname "Old Slap Sides". He wanted to do the demonstration on a US Navy battleship, got approved, walked out, in front of everyone with a bucket of muddy water, action open, dropped the 1911 into the bucket and and the next half hour described how this weapon will help the military for the next 100 years... boy was he right. Then proceeded to pull it out and have everyone follow him while he slams it as hard as he can on every peoce of hardened steel while walking around the ship. He then loaded the standard 7 round magazine, chambered and fired all 7 shots clean.

As an MP in the army, when first training with this pistol we went to the firing range. The instructor was standing in a mud puddle talking about the pistol, not having one in hand. After describing the stopping power and basically telling the same story that was in this vid, he stepped to the side. Reaching down to pull the pistol out of the mud puddle and dunk it in a bucket of water. Forcing the slide back and forth a few times under water then more out of the water. He shook the pistol, placed a magazine into it and turned to fire each of the 8 rounds down the range. This weapon is the most durable and dependable firearm I have ever used. Easy to maintain, right feel and weight, just a perfect sidearm.

Fun fact: here in the Philippines, the M1911 is arguably the most notable of "ghost guns" ever made by gunsmiths deep in the jungle. Sure gunsmiths will say that this venerable piece of history that stopped Moro Juramentados (Spanish for oathtakers) screaming "YAWA" at the top of their lungs as they tried to gut or slash you with barongs, kampilans, and kalises that building M1911's be easy, you got to remember the ghost gun makers build these in the middle of nowhere and they don't have fancy-ass tools, and if you luck out, you can snag a really perfect clone of the OG handgun.

They even got in trouble for selling it with "USMC" stamped on the side as that was trademarked by said Corps. You can still by one today but with "COLT" where "USMC" used to be for $2000. Or you can browse the used sites for one with a crossed out "USMC" for 3k. If you look hard you might find one with the "USMC" not crossed out for 10k.

Funny thing is, during the slaughter house phase of the trials for the adoption of the 1911, the round that dropped the steer (slaughter weight around 400 pounds not 2000;) fastest was a .32 ACP. They'd been deliberately aiming to just hit muscle tissue with a single shot of the assorted rounds and the steers were taking 30-40 seconds for the shock to set in before they'd drop. But they clipped an artery with the .32 ACP and the steer bled out before the shock had an effect. Just goes to show that shot placement will always trump raw power.

0:37 My dad taught me to shoot. He had two pistols, a supermatic 22 and a 1911.
I used to talk about picking up a Para Ordinance 1911 with a 14-round mag.
He said, "If you can't hit your target with the first two rounds, you might as well throw the gun at him. Because you'll be dead before you ever get to that 14th round."
He then said, "If you want more than 7, put one in the pipe. You won't ever need more than 4 to end your fight."
5 years later, I was in Desert Storm with an old 1911. The transition to the M-9 was gradual at that time. I never did dump a mag in close quarter engagements. 4 to 8 usually ended it.

I believe that in WWII, Grunts, NCOs, and Officers would commonly carry the 1911 as a side arm along with their M1 Garand. Not saying this was to show the enemy that America only needs one shot of un-healthcare but I'm also not saying that this wasn't the reason. It is often said that it easier to switch to your pistol in a firefight then to reload, with the combination of the M1 and the 1911, it was more of dealer's choice of hole punching technology you wanted: bovine or whack-a-mole.

My Dad was on the USS Massachusetts (BB-59) at the end of WW2.
Some asshole decided that instead of returning his 1911 .45 to the armory after standing watch, that he'd just hide that sucker away so he could keep it.
A Chief commented, in the presence of my Dad and others, "If I was the dumb sonofabitch who stole a .45, I'd probably go toss it in the forward bilge compartment before the Captain starts dismembering people in his thorough search of the ship and ship's personnel."
Wouldn't you know, they found that .45 in the very first place they looked...the forward bilge compartment.
My Dad never admitted to me that he'd been the dumbass responsible for that near-freedom-ending fiasco, but he also never claimed he wasn't responsible.

When I was a younger soldier I enjoyed reading the Mack Bolan books and the spin off books Phoenix Force and Able Team. A quote from Able Team Team Carl "Ironman" Lyons was asked why he liked The 45 over the 9mm. He said the 9mm is used on Europeans while the 45 was used for the really dangerous people. When I was in the army I was issued the 45 and fell in loved with it even though I could shoot for sht when it came to hand guns. Today I don't trust myself to own a gun, but that doesn't mean that I think others shouldn't own them, it is not my place to say what people can and can't own it is your right to own guns.

The one reason 45acp is better than 9mm for military purposes is that the military only uses FMJ for the average grunt meaning you can't use fancy hole making technology, like JHP, to make up for the 9mm small cross-section.

Well that and understand your average grunt gets 1/3rd the amount of overall range time that SpecFor/Ops teams get in an average span of enlistment. Which means that the offset training relies heavily on volume rather than accuracy. Which is why infantry platoons, as opposed to a Green Beret or Ranger element, have more personnel per element and cheaper munitions and equipment to work with, because the expenditure for such a platoon will be higher to achieve an objective, than it would be a higher tier element.

At the Battle off Samar, where the vastly outnumbered and outgunned American Naval Task Force Taffy 3 was doing their level best to set everything with a Japanese flag on board on fire, several planes from the escort carriers of that task force also attacked the Japanese. Unfortunately, they were armed for supporting Marines invading the Philippines, not attacking warships. And because the carriers were under fire from the Japanese fleet, they couldn't land to reload and rearm. Many of the pilots then took to making "dry runs" on the Japanese ships, accenting those runs by opening the cockpit and firing their 1911 down on those very ships. Just another reason the Japanese fleet turned around and ran away that day.

You're mostly right. The.45 Cal is descended from the .44 cal percussion revolvers carried by Cavalry -- .44 being the smallest ball that would reliably and rapidly put down a wounded and thrashing horse. When the metallic cartridge and bore-through cylinder came along, they went to.45 to keep people from just boring the cylinders of existing pistols.
When the Moro problem developed, .45 Colt was already an issue round for the Army, as well as still being the go-to for practical outdoors use. Browning upsized and updated his earlier pistols to meet the need, and created a round for the new pistol that was compatible with existing ammo manufacturers' equipment. His genius here was not changing what already worked, while creating a new standard to define "What Works."

I disagree. While the 1911 has proven itself a worthy firearm, its only plea to longevity now is because of who built it and the aesthetic of owning "The Weapon that Won 2 World Wars"...
But ignore Korea and Vietnam, because those don't count.
And because Fudds won't shut the fuck up about it.
      Nice weapon? Yes.
      Effective caliber? Yes.
