    So I don't have to keep responding to "this guy knows nasa uses the metric system right?" ...... Yes they do. they adopted it in 1992 and coincidentally haven't put a person on the moon since. So my statement of "metric countries can't put a man on the moon" 100% accurate. Also before you say "ya but they still used metric for the calculations in the Apollo missions" No they didn't, even the UK metric association reluctantly admits on their website "the vital calculations for the Apollo missions were done in imperial"

      We should not forget the 1999 loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter ($125 million) because the ACS (Altitude Control System) used Imperial but some lunatic Brit installed it with software that used Metric.
      I'm surprised NASA didn't send an invoice to the UK for $125 million.

      100% agree that metric was the wrong way to go, but, the Apollo Guidance Computer did use metric/si internally for its calculations. But it converted to imperial/USC units when it displayed data on the DSKY, and for the telemetric data that was being collected.
      Also interesting factoid for those who are interested, the Apollo 11 craft had 4 KBs of RAM, and a 32KB hard disk to store data on, they are still crunching some of those numbers today because they decided to use both imperial and Si in data gathering.

Buckshot round, with 3x the pellets of a 12g shell. Night attack? Illumination rounds are brighter and burn longer than a standard flare gun. Need way more boom than the frag round? HOW COULD YOU NOT MENTION THE FLECHETTE AND SHOTGUN ROUNDS?!
    During the Vietnam war, many firefights occurred within 15 meters, too close for the M79's grenades to arm. Uncle Sam's solution was to make shotgun ammo for it.
    A double 0' twelve guage shotgun shell contains nine .32 caliber pellets and is 19mm in diameter.
    Double the diameter means something like eight times the volume.
    I am having trouble trouble finding source material, but the 40mm fires twenty pellets weighing 24 grams each. I can't find a diameter, but thats 370 grains. That makes it twice the weight of a standard 7.62 bullet, half the weight of a .50cal.
    Twenty of them. Going downrange at 885 feet per second...

    • @HM2SGT
      @HM2SGT ปีที่แล้ว +45

      When 40 mm grenade launchers were first developed, the weapon was to be the primary weapon of the infantryman carrying it. It was quickly found that in most engagements, while the grenadier gave the squad a decided force multiplier, they were also decidedly exposed if presented with an enemy within the arming distance of most high explosive rounds. Rounds with shorter arming distances presented significant danger to the shooters if used at those ranges. Prior to development of grenade launchers attached to standard infantry rifles, development commenced on non-explosive cartridges to allow those armed with grenade launchers to engage targets at shorter ranges safely.
      Similar rounds have also been developed for weapons chambering the higher velocity 40x53mm cartridge as well.
      These anti-personnel rounds fall primarily into what is considered the "canister" category.
      40×46mm types include the M576 series.
      The M576 contains twenty 20-grain (1.30-gram) metal pellets.[6][7] The XM576/XM576E1 was standardized to become the M576. Another test variant, the XM576E2, which had twenty-seven 20-grain (1.30-gram) metal pellets without a sabot within the shot cup was deemed to spread too quickly for effective use.
      The only current 40×53mm type is the M1001 and is a canister round filled with 115 17-grain 2.0-inch long flechettes. During the late 1960s, Nortronics was developing the XM678. References have listed different projectile loads ranging from thirty-two 0.24-inch carbide pellets up to fifty-four 30-grain (1.94-gram) tungsten pellets.

About a 200 yard shot. Not much left of the Goose though. Not sure why it changed but, back then the grenade armed in about 12 feet, rather then 30 yards. No! We never put them on pottery wheels and spun them, long enough to arm. Then casually leave them around for the zipperheads to pick up. Never did it, no one saw me, theres no evidence, I have an alibi, so I'm innocent. Just heard it from a guy, who new a fellow, who's brother said it happened.

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BombproofCraftsman Chalk rounds provide almost all the fun of a 40mm he but you don't need a tax stamp to buy them since they're "training" ammunition.
      Don't think for a second that the "training" designation means it's not dangerous either. That's probably about half a pound of chalk being yeeted with enough force to carry it 400 yards.
      So even if you get hit by the training ammo, Uncle Sam will be able to chalk you up as another enemy casualty. And yes, that pun was fully intentional, it's such an easy connection to make that I just couldn't not do it.
      Oh and from those training rounds it's not a far leap to riot control rounds, like rubber balls or even tear gas. Police departments use those out of something like this quite frequently. The rubber balls do have a reduced powder charge compared to a 40mm HE round, so if it hits you it's gonna hurt quite a bit, and it might break your nose, but if you're over 50 yards away you shouldn't suffer any life-altering injury. Inside 50 yards procedure was to bounce it off the ground to take some of the velocity out of it, but this tactic has seen limited success, so most police departments have switched to tasers or pepper balls within the minimum safe range of those.

      @@BombproofCraftsman 40mm chalk rounds are considered anti personal by the bafte. They don’t require a stamp for each round but anyway out of a 37mm that is anti-p they consider it a DD. So if you wanna fire chalks you need registered DD.

    Grenade launchers are quite possibly the scariest infantry weapon ever
    Could you imagine being the enemy and after emptying your clip you all reload. And while doing that you just hear **FUMP FUMP FUMP FUMP FUMP FUMP FUMP** and then you look up and the skies are filled with tiny, fuming black dots. And before you even know what the hell is happening your general area is turned into a giant crusty earth casserole
