    As a 39 year old man that played re1 when it released it wasn't just original it was unique...after the 16bit Era this was mind blowing like watching a movie if you can believe it...one of the best games ever made I still remember the jump scare it gave me and my brother when the first zombie grabbed your leg

      I’m 38 years of age and I absolutely feel the same way!!!
      After coming off of playing games from the previous 16 bit generation, and then moving firmly into the 32-bit era that we were currently stationed in, resident evil was the most amazing and unique experience there was at the time of its release! And their damn sure had not been a game that even compared where is the level of tension and extreme level of excitement that came from the jump scares, is concerned?!?
      Only games that come to mind for me or clock tower which I’m not even sure if clock tower was out before resident evil or if it wasn’t until sometime after? But there was a game that me and my buddy Dylan used to think was pretty terrifying around the same time and that was the game D where are you played as a reporter or something? You played as a female with blonde hair and the game had incredible graphics for the time as well as incredible CGI and it was very unsettling to say the least, but definitely scary..

      I’m 38 now I remember when me and my friends first got this and had to sneak it past our parents. I would sleep over my friends house every weekend and we would just pull all nighters and beat the game as fast as we could. My friend got pretty good for a 12 year old. Had to have watched him beat this game over 100 times.

    I'm reading a book, Itchy, Tasty, the Unofficial history of Resident Evil, and there is an interesting piece there about the writing in RE1, coming from Mikami himself. According to him, the dialogue was written in such unnatural way to make sure that the Japanese players would understand it. "Stop it! Don't open that door!" or the "powerful against living things" lines sound uncanny, but very understandable from a foreigner's perspective. As for the voice acting, well... The actors weren't given any context to the lines, according to Barry's and Rebecca's performers)

    • @xLadyRaine
      @xLadyRaine 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      This makes sense. All resident evil games, until 6 or 7 ONLY have english voice acting with Japanese subtitles

    • @gabrieldevoogel6225
      @gabrieldevoogel6225 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah the more specific version is that barely any of the actors got line context (I follow OG Wesker on twitter :D) the lines were written to be easy to understand in general ways, as was said above, and there wasn’t enough budget for regional voice acting, so they took over the top English over anything else, it’s really cool to see, and I kinda wish they still purposefully overwrote the English version at least here and there, because modern RE always leaves me with this feeling of “how is this from the same series” except the remakes, which have enough cheesiness and memorable things brought over from the old version, but this is just a really great story all and all about the Re1 acting because it’s friggin hilarious

    one thing ive loved about the is the concept of the ink ribbon to save your game. its like their leaving behind a story of everything thats happened up to that point and fits with all the other documents or notes you find from the other people that were there. just thought that was really cool.

      Definitely. The save system is similar in Silent Hill 1 as well, as Harry is writing down his notes on the situation in case anyone in the future comes across them. And in Silent Hill 3 you can read one of his notes and adds context to what he was thinking at the time

    If I remember correctly the auto aim was taken out of the original US release because back then game rental was pretty huge, and the devs thought if they made the game harder people wouldnt be able to complete it in a couple of days, thus making them want to buy the game instead. And it wasn't just the auto aim that was changed, they also reduced the number of ink ribbons you pick up, reduced Jill's/Chris' health, and other adjustments that I can't remember off top of my head, all to make the game more difficult. It ended up being so much harder than the Japanese version, that even Capcom's own testers struggled to complete it, or so the rumour goes.

    28:55 Modern gamers are so easily turned off by old game mechanics. I swear the number of times I've had arguments defending games like RE 1-3, Fallout 1 & 2, even Witcher 1. The latter being a 2007 game, not that old in the grand scheme of things, but people still moan how steep of a learning curve the gameplay has. Getting zoomers to learn an older control scheme or look at blocky or sprite-based graphics, is like asking them to learn to breath in outer space. They will last for about 2 minutes, before quitting and going online to complain how bad the game is.

Just a few little things to add: You can use the blue herb alone, you don't do have to combine it with a green herb and in the second phase the Yawn can't poisen you. The last thing is that germany and france got the uncut intro with color in the "Director's Cut", for whatever reason. The only thing missing in this version of the game is the head scene in the first zombie fmv

    The story is very 90s cheesy, which is something I really like about it. I think people who grew up playing these games will appreciate the game and the story a lot more. It may not be great acting or great graphics, but it allows you to use your imaganation. Hearing you say the "story sucks" shows you're from a completely different generation. You just had to grow up playing them when they first came out to understand.

    • @WitchTaunter

      I think it goes without saying that if you have nostalgia about something you like it more. Stories do have the capability to stand the test of time, you don't have to have grown up with something to like it or think it is well written.

    I rented Resident Evil from a video store when it came out. I ended up keeping it for 3 months but had to return it when the store calls became constant. I did get my own copy with the RE2demo that I used my GameShark to fully explore its contents such as unused rooms and journals. I even attempted to finish the game using only my knife. I did make it all the way to the final facility till I got sloppy. Will try it again someday. Good video!

    10:39 i know hindsight plays a factor but one way they could have dealt with Barry wanting to see Tyrant could have been to simply have him say gather evidence of its existance and then try to destroy it before it wakes up and then have him accidentally wake it up instead.
    Again hindsight is perfect but i feel like something like that could've solved that tiny issue.

    Here’s the thing about the controls in RE1: they were INTENTIONALLY bad because Capcom didn’t want people to rent the game and beat it in one weekend. So how’d they do it? The disabled auto aim and made rotations slower.
    Same thing with RE2 (original). So the later releases fixed a lot of these issues.

    I think the problem with tank controls as a person who kinda disliked them before is that they don't work as well using a control stick as you will be turning too much & thus running into walls but when I played RE3 Nemesis on an PS3 I learned that the tank controls are best played using the D-pad once you learn that they become easy I was able to finish a part of Code Veronica I was stuck on thanks to this but I restarted it after realising I had no heals or ammo for the end game so I either coulda tried to beat it on hard mode or just replay it & rush to the end. I am yet to finish but with only 2 days playing it each for like 2 or 3 hours I've almost finished the Rockford Island part just having 1 more of those standards to get but knowing exactly what to do after I unlock the Bio-hazard containment room So I'll soon beat easily the Tyrant on a plane cause I saved all the explosives & then I can rush to the Chris part before the Steve thing which hopefully won't lead me to quit the game for another 6 months or so.

    Great video, loved the little cartoon versions of the characters.
    I've only started playing RE a year ago starting with the very first game (Directors Cut, non dual shock version). And despite what I heard about the game from friends and reviews about how dated it was, I genuinely loved it. Not in a "Oh I guess this was good back then" or "It's bad but it has a charm" sort of way. I had an absolute blast with this one. And I'm soooo happy to find a review that doesn't describe the tank controls as the worst thing ever. They work well in the classic RE games
    The only thing I mostly disagree on with people is the need to save ammo. In my very first playthrough I did that out of fear of running out since that's what everyone said would happen, and yet at the last area I found myself wasting ammo for no reason because of just how much I had. Maybe it's because I hugged the walls and objects massing the search button so I found some hidden ammo, or maybe since I used the knife (The knife is THE MOST underrated weapon ever. Seriously. It's not that hard to kill a zombie with it, but you don't even have to do that, just shoot them until they fall down and then slash them a couple of times when you are safe to do damage and save a few bullets.) but on subsequent playthroughs I always have enough ammo to kill Every creature in my path and still have some left over. It ruins any tension but it also makes it fun to replay the game.
    Anyways, that got a bit longer then expected. Once again great video, I look forward to your future reviews.

    32:34 auto aim was only taken out in the American version because video game rentals were popular at the time. Because the developers themselves said it was too difficult for them to beat without the auto aim that they decided to remove it which kept people from renting the game and beating quickly. Thus leading to us actually buying the game to beat it. Video game rentals weren't a big thing everywhere else so that is why it was only removed here. But hey at least we can say we played and beat the hardest version of Resident Evil. Lol.

    On the point of the auto-aim being removed for the American edition of Resident Evil 1, fairly certain it was during the time that for some reason a lot of Japanese game companies were making American versions of games PURPOSEFULLY harder, for no good reason. RE2 even suffered from this, where the NA release didn't get the option of Easy difficulty. They got Normal and Hard. In JP, you had to beat the game on Normal to unlock Hard, iirc, and there's a lot more items like healing and ammo in the JP version. I feel like it's maybe a response to the fact that for a while, NA games from Japan would either be easier because NA wasn't considered as much of a 'gamer' space, or we just would get entirely different games instead (Looking at you, Mario Bros 2) since the actual games were "too hard for Americans".
    Joke's on them though, most people I know in America prefer the Japanese versions of the earlier games, and the NA versions of the later games. They LIKE the difficulty.
    *Edit:
    Okay so in RE2 you don't have only Normal and Hard... technically. NA Easy and Normal ARE JP's Normal and Hard, and the PC version of RE2 for NA had an even HARDER Hard mode unlock once you beat the game.

    About the controls:
    I have seen a game (Don't remember what the game's name was) that I think had a better solution for controls with these camera angles. It had full multi direction movement but also a run button that made you go forward in the direction you are facing. This removed the issue of regular movement fucking up at camera angle changes while not having the awkwardness and inconveniences of tank controls.

    • @WitchTaunter
      @WitchTaunter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That isn't a bad way to handle it, but the "run" speed is pretty much the default for movement in these games. I don't think that this game's movement system was flawed, but it obviously could've been handled better. But it was basically a first attempt, excluding something like Alone in the Dark.

      12:19 Yeah, no. The story isn't "crap." Yes, NOW, POST ZOMBIE CRAZE, it's tired and done. In 1996 there was nothing like Resident Evil. Neither sweet home, nor Alone in the Dark did what Resident Evil did. For the time, cheesy voice acting aside, Resident Evil was magical.

    Never understood the hatred for tank controls and to be completely honest it's just DSP noise to me.
    I was a pretty dumb child, yet I was able to run past zombies after about an hour into the game, so tank controls can't be that bad. But some people are just too lazy (or maybe genuinely too dumb) to adapt. Now that I think of it, Inever had troubles with any control scheme in any game that wasn't broken. How can this be such a problem for some people? I grew up during the big jump from 2D to 3D, which was probably the biggest change in video game conventions ever, yet I had no troubles going from SMW to SM64. I also never had any issues with motion controls during the Wii era. Or touchpad controls on the DS and 3DS. So, as far as I'm concerned, people bitching about tank controls are on the same level of skill as DarksydePhil and they don't need to be taken seriously. They are the same kind of people who made Starfox Zero (a genuinely awesome game) flop, by bitching and whining about the motion controls and how they are so bad that they can't finish the game. Meanwhile, I accidentally unlocked the black arwing on my first playthrough and wasn't able to change the ship back, so I was stuck with basically Rosa from Bayonetta 2 while still adapting to the overall control scheme.

    29:19 but the Final Fantasys on PS1 have 2D set and camera change, but don't have tank control and have not the problem you show.

    • @WitchTaunter

      I don't know anything about the final fantasy games, but the RE Remasters do indeed have this problem. With the alternative controls you will move in the same direction after a camera change so long as you dont move in another direction. On a controller with a stick, this means any subtle movement causes the character to have to quickly readjust, which removes the intentional slow turn speed but that's a whole thing to talk about when I get to those games.

    I think every single TH-camr out there likes to rag on resident evil six, just because every other TH-camr already does it and “ I couldn’t possibly stand against that many people that are saying I am wrong?!?!?” Type mentality-……..
    For real man, be original-
    Just because the whole crowd is doing something, doesn’t make it right…
    Resident evil six was one of the most fun games I have ever played!! Play through it with a buddy and it’s even more of a blast!!
    Sure, it might be lower on the totem pole where resident evil and survival horror is concerned, but let’s not act like it is not an extension of what Capcom created when they made resident evil four and then five and then six is what naturally came after?!?!?
    So for anybody to complain about resident evil six, they might wanna start with the root of the problem which was resident evil four-
    But every TH-camr loves that game, I’m not even going to point out how that such a contradiction..
    I think for the time that resident evil six came out in, as well as what it did for the series of resident evil, it really shook up everybody’s expectations and gave players something new and exciting and as far as I’m concerned it’s a fucking masterpiece for all the wrong reasons but yet it is still a masterpiece!!! Over the top everything that is so damn stupid that it combines all the previous elements of previous existing resident evil games that were stupid, and it pushes them to 11.. but it was fun and exciting and I loved every second of it!
    It’s also the reason why the next resident evil immediately after would be some thing that went back to the roots of horror so to speak, but also kept that “something new“ part of it by giving us a first person resident evil game, that if you ask me is the most overrated resident evil of all even though I love it also?! I think it’s overrated because I think they missed a hell of an opportunity to have all the different various monster types that would’ve made that game so much more immersive and scary, instead all they had was like three or four different “molded enemies“ that after you realize this, it seemed really weak and generic when measured against other RE titles?
    Either way, had it not been for resident evil six the franchise would’ve never got back on track like this but I also think that resident evil eight, is the worst one in the series!!!!
    At least resident evil six you’re still fighting mutated monsters and zombies and zombie dogs from a virus whereas in resident evil eight it’s all of a sudden magical and mystical now and you’re fighting fucking vampires and werewolves and shit what the fuck???????????!
    The only reason there are not more TH-camrs that would elaborate on this fact, is because there are no people with any bravery left in the world anymore except for people like me who are poor and don’t have a voice or platform to do anything, but if I did I would stand up to the world and sing the praises of resident evil six, while pointing out the obnoxious hypocrisy of anybody that would praise resident evil four, seven and eight, then turn around and criticize resident evil six? When if you ask me resident evil six was way more on track even though it’s steered away from the survival horror elements, it was way more on track than resident evil seven and especially the god-awful game that is resident evil eight!
    God that’s the only resident evil game I regret buying at launch… I didn’t buy resident evil six until the re-release on PS4 and Xbox one for $20 and loved every minute of it!

      Don't worry, when I get to RE6 in the retrospectives, I'll actually go into detail about why it isn't very good, and it isn't because of RE4 existing.

      @@WitchTaunter Yeah I know all the reasons why “it isn’t very good,” it’s still a very fun game and it wouldn’t be the way that it is if it were not for resident evil four, resident evil four was the start of the trajectory for the third person action over survival horror type gameplay..
      I would rather see a video of why resident evil eight strays so far from what resident evil has always been and yet how so many people seem to have a good opinion of it when, I’d beat it one time and after that I didn’t even care to play it no more..

    • @turismofoegaming8806
      @turismofoegaming8806 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WitchTaunter I just wanted you to know I didn’t mean for my comment to be condescending or disrespectful toward you, it’s just that every single TH-camr that does these videos, the vast majority of them all stick to the same “narrative“ where resident evil six is concerned and I’m sorry, resident evil six was a blast to play through and I beat every single campaign in the game and really enjoyed it!!
      Sure, it’s not my favorite resident evil in the series but when it comes to playing one of them co-op with a partner, I like resident evil six, resident evil five and revelations one and two..
      I just feel like sometimes people are saying that “they also dislike RE six the most“ because the majority of more popular TH-camrs already say this and they don’t want to go against the grain? It was a fun game, it shook up things and gave you this obnoxious action packed romp to the end with more content in it than any other RE title!
      But of course, my favorite resident evil games are the originals-

    The og directors cut version is the best, with auto-aim, beginner and arrange mode. The DualShock version replaces the ost with a bunch of doo-doo.
    Playing the basement theme on the og directors cut makes it seem like that version isn’t very good, despite it being the best version.

    It’s kind of like the difficulty for the original resident evil being as Jill is the easier campaign and she is a female and Chris’s campaign being the much more difficult and he is male, it’s kind of like how it is in real life?
    If you’re a pretty female, things in your life are always going smoothly and you have people that will constantly bend over backwards for you because you are pretty and privileged…
    But if you’re just some “toxic masculine male“ then things for you are never going to be easy and you will have to work twice as hard for half as much and never have anybody bend over backwards for you at all, instead everybody will try to get in your way and make things even more difficult for you??
    Man, Shinji makhani and the guys that designed resident evil must’ve been able to see into the future and know how the modern day would be, unless it has always been that way? Maybe it has and it is just more true nowadays..
    Resident evil difficulty:
    Pretty female: Easy going, smooth sailing, men to constantly help you out and get you where you are going successfully and you can “carry more items because you’re a female and you have more places to put them….🤷‍♂️”
    Beta Male:
    You better be ready for some bullshit

    I disagree when you said the story “sucks” it’s just dated. Lots of movies that came out 30-40 years ago may seem like they suck. But at the time it was a piece of art and history. It’s people and how we view things that change. Not the quality of good games and good movies that were made some time ago
