TECHNICAL CORRECTION: magnetic field doesn't decay exponentially; rather, to a first approximation, it obeys an inverse square law. So it decays as distance squared. In other words, *theoretically* you get 1/4 the field strength when you double the distance, and 1/9 if you triple it. Obviously the lower frequencies must fall off faster because they seem to increase relative to the high frequencies as you raise the pickup toward the strings, consistent with my experience. Too close and they can sound muddy and less dynamic. Definitely worth playing around with! 👍

All good tips. Before adjusting your pickup height, it's usually a good idea to take measurements from the bottom of the string to the top of the Pole Pieces, just in case you want to easily restore the settings. Small differences in pickup height can make a big difference in tone, dynamics, sensitivity, distortion, etc. Trust your ears more than your eyes.
Disconnect neck pickup and use the bridge.

The biggest upgrade to my tone was going from 9-42 to 10-46 gauge strings. Tightened up my playing and tightened up the guitar as well

@officialWWM i watched that video, when they go from 9s to 8s , they had a big loss of low end, mainly because you cant attack the strings the same without them flubbing and going sharp .
i see the same thing going from 10s to 9. you just cant dig in

Just thought of something: This one is for bolt on necks, because the others never need this. Get a proper size and format screwdriver and -- with the strings in tune -- loosen the bottom screws about a quarter or half turn. Then slowly do the same with the top screws. The release in pressure may allow the guitar's neck to settle more firmly into the neck pocket, which motion may be announced with a noise or noises; ignore 'em or better yet welcome them, because those noises mean changes for the better. Re-tighten the neck screws (I go from bottom to top.) and re-tune the guitar. There will often be a difference. What difference and how much varies, but I've never had a guitar not improve after this procedure. The procedure is simple and short enough to be performed after changing and stretching the strings.
Interesting suggestion, it makes sense...I'm going to try this today. Is it something you recommend after each string change? Or just periodically, or what?
@@j3ffn4v4rr0 I really don't know how often it should be, so I will just say to do what I do -- do it when it feels right. It's simple and quick enough to do for every string change, but I don't think it necessary to do so often. Quarterly sounds good to me.
Trying out a different brand of strings can also give you a difference in tone, and you might find something you love
I think your treble bleed point was interesting. I think lowering the volume with them changes how your gear responds enough that IMO a treble bleed makes both volume and tone knobs more specific and as a result of less "side effects", both are more useable. I attribute using my knobs more to having treble bleeds in a jazz guitar lol!
Of course that being said I just wired a strat pickguard as HHH with an individual volume with push/pull coil splitting for each pickup, and 3 switches instead of the 5 way. This includes bridge and neck phase inversions, and an on/off/on with different capacitors running to ground in each on position, like a more variable PRS sweet switch. This means no tone knob so I went no treble bleeds as I could get about and tone effects I would want!

Choice of pick material will have an immediate effect on your attack and tone. I have a selection of nylon, timber, stone and metal picks at hand.
Pity I don't have all that much by way of skill...there's not a single fast twitch muscle fibre in my entire bod...

Practice is even more important than you think. Doing a setup properly often entails a fret job, and a fret job always provides a fresh and new "playing surface." For the fret hand, this new "surface" constitutes a wholly new instrument. You have to get used to and good at playing the guitar the way it is after the setup. After that, it gets much easier to reach "the Zone," and I hope every musician out there knows exactly what I'm talking about -- or at least will eventually!

Just FYI-3mm is 118 thousandths of an inch. I usually start around an eyeballed 32/32" clearance below the fat string and the top of the neck pickup's polepiece. Then I balance output(with a dB meter) string to sting and pickup to pickup to establish a base from which to tweak by ear (up or down). I'll revisit those adjustments daily for several days until I can no longer detect improvement (by ear). P.S.: I use this approach on all electrics (regardless of pickups).
Hi Dylan, I don't know if you respond to comments but I have a question for you that I've been wanting to know about for years. You say as opposed to an acoustic guitar, the goal of an electric guitar is to keep the energy of the string in the string. I agree that the tuning pegs. nut and saddles should not move, but if the tuners, nut and saddles are immobile, well then when you pluck a string the body of the guitar itself and the neck will move, is that a bad thing or a good thing? Does the body and neck moving take energy away from the string? This is something I'm curious about because the best guitars I've ever played were always guitars who were moving a lot when played. The worst guitars I've ever played were guitars who were completely immobile when playing them, they always had no sustain and sounded thin or dead. The guitars who were moving always had more sustain, a fuller frequency spectrum, more harmonics and more output. What I find paradoxical is that when you play the dead guitars that never move, it feels as though every ounce of energy you put in them is immediately sucked out as if the guitar was a sponge. And the guitars who are moving feel as though they are bouncing back at you, like every effort you put in them comes back to you and gives you a lot more, as if the guitar itself is alive. So why is it that when the energy is sucked out the guitar doesn't move but then when the energy stays it makes the body and neck move???
Does nut material (Bone, etc) matter once a particular string is fretted?

The only thing I would add, is if you have a bolt on neck maybe once a year is make sure the neck bolts are tight it is rare but they can loosen up a tiny bit

I never understood people just having all the knobs at 10, you have the knobs for a reason. And I also have no interest in a single pickup guitar because I generally prefer a neck position for cleans
just put the pedals away for a little while, only use a clean tone or D.I. and try and get a tone you like with technique, pickup height, and your potentiameters. putting perameters on your set up or rig will breed creativity. yall ever heard "tone is in the fingers" i only half agree with that sentiment, but when i need a pallet cleanser i like to put that old saying to the test and i feel like its constructive
