I wanna buy a m550d because of the same reasons you said, I think the power is more useable in the real world because of the huge amount of torque low down but I am scared it won't have enough emotion like my other cars. That car sounded absolutely brutal. it had the rumble of a v8 engine mixed with the whine from a big truck turbo.
People talk about fuel economy on a car that's >50k new and expensive to maintain. The difference in cost per mile between 9l/100km gas or 7l/100km diesel makes less than 10% difference unless you drive some insane distances year after year. If you want great economy, don't buy an expensive BMW with >300hp, simple as that.

In the real world point to point, corner to corner, the 335d xdrive is quicker with the lump of torque low down and the grip of the xdrive, i've driven an M140i & F30 355d, the oil burner was a brute in the streets, the petrol has the legs on "long" straights though, by a fraction.
Phillip Berk 340i will do 400km while speeding on the autobahn as you would if you had a 340i, but the 335d does 200km more at the same speed on the autobahn. Only difference between them is fuel, power and sound. But both have between 300-330hp.
Phillip Berk No doubt the 340i sounds a lot better, and its more fun to drive. It's case of what suits your needs. I'd pick the 335D purely for the effortless cruising and economy.
Not a huge surprise; the 340i is known to have it's HP output heavily under-rated (so as not to hurt the sales of the M3) - real outputs being reliably over 370hp. Meanwhile the 335d's output is only marginally under-rated, maybe 320hp. Also the 340i can stay in the power-band more easily in a balls-out scenario like this; the advantage the 335d will have in everyday "coasting then floor-it" scenarios is reversed.
Dont agree fully, with these fast automatic transmissions (ZF8) the kickdown got so fast these days that diesels dont have the benefit of 'coasting then floor it' they had before.
There are many reasons I have a problem with this "comparison". IT IS NOT! 1.) Touring vs. Limousine a) Touring is heavier b) Aerodynamics of Limousine are better 2.) RWD vs. AWD a) AWD is heavier b) RWD has better efficiency c) AWD has better traction at speeds under 100 km/h I think the acceleration would be similar, if the cars would have approximately the same weight and both RWD or AWD. So: Nice to see, but not a real comparison in my opinion, sorry.

the 335d only comes in AWD ... but i agree on the touring part it should be both sedans, the 340i was faster on higher speeds due to more power and lighter weight but if you tune the 335d it could be toe to toe with a m4/m3

You have a freaking Sport mode on the shifter as well, please use it, never seen you use it neither of your videos.. it's called M/S,just it goes into manual just if you try to manual shift

I have a f30 335d and the only complaint I have about it is that it has an automatic transmission. People can say that zf 8hp is great and that xHP makes it even beteer, blah, blah, but it just can't beat a manual. The auto box is always in the wrong gear for what I want to do and waiting for it to find the correct gear takes all the fun out of it.

I will have my M340i touring xdrive in two weeks. Next week we chip my sons 335d touring xdrive which will then have same power but 200Nm more torque (700 plus). So....guess what?

forget about the speedo. if you noticed the 340i had plenty wheel spin. the speedo showed the petrol is faster but was it really faster on the road with all the wheel spin. his speedo were at 30mph but he was probably doing 10 because of lack of traction, Would be different if they were side by side. forget about the 35d being an estate and heavier. What i mean is this. you can run on the dyno and see the speedo at 150mph, but in actual, your car is standstill. same to this. speedo doesn't mean anything, its how you deliver the power on the road is whats important
there’s also the 340i xDrive. that would help eliminate the wheelspin and you can always turn your 340iX into a 340i with xDelete when you want to do sick wheelspins and drifts.
It's the stability of these things at stupid speeds which impresses me the most. There are no perceptible steering corrections involved. You just point them where you want them to go and they go there. No drama. No fuss.
I would always take the 335d, no question. It's more efficient, it's more reliable, it's cheaper, it can do longer distances and it is one hell of a sleeper!
This 335d is quite slow, I think there is something wrong with it. I drive an 435xd, it has almost the same weigth and (in theory) exactly the same power. My car is really quicker, the difference is considerable therefor I think there must be something wrong with this 335d.

This comparison is disappointing, the fact that you are comparing the 340 with the 335 touring. Down in power which is fine but also so much heavier, come on. Should be comparing sedan v sedan. You know this so why do it.
The result is not surprising. The diesel has more mass worse aerodynamics and less power. Usually for the same power a turbocharged engine (gas or diesel) has a better torque-rpm curve. Higher maximum torque has no significance other than showing that the engine will have a lower max rpm. Torque alone without rpm doesn't say absolutely anything about the engine performance. Torque and rpm have the same (1 to 1) impact on performance.
I have a f31 335d estate with a stage 1 engine remap and stage 2 or 3 gearbox flash from mallory performance and it took the piss out both an m4 and a a45 amg, guy in a 450bhp rs3 done me tho but not by much, he couldn't catch his breath that the bm was a diesel 💜💙💜💙
So either the driver of the diesel sucks, or the official numbers given by BMW aren't 100% correct. In this video the petrol engine beats to the 100 kph and to the 200 kph marks
GazRwood yes power /rpm curve or torque/rpm curve which are equivalent since P=M*ω, say everything you need about the engine performance , then for acceleration you have the gearbox efficiency and ratios, aerodynamics, mass and rolling resistance. Torque alone doesn't say anything about performance while power alone, does because you know at some particular rpm it can deliver that power. For example a 1000Nm with 100hp will be roughly the same as a 100Nm 100hp, only max rpm will differ.
I just find it bizarre that the rwd 340i is faster to 60mph. This is not true even on a perfect surface, the 335d always wins up to at least 60mph. Perhaps is both cars were xdrive and touring with launch control used on both we would have a more fair comparison.
Yes, i is quicker than d, this is not surprise. But i think there is problem with any d, because transmission lets it rev to 5000. It works better between 3000-4000, max 4500 in this biturbo. Petrol engine likes reving to 6000-7000.

The ZF 8-speed autos shift so quickly that low-end torque really doesn't matter anymore.

The XDrive in the 335d just makes more sense, gives you endless amounts of power and comfort.
Uselss Comparison. You compare a 4wheel drive vs 2wheel drive. The Xdrive weights 155kg more.

The result is not surprising. The diesel has more mass worse aerodynamics and less power.
Usually for the same power a turbocharged engine (gas or diesel) has a better torque-rpm curve. Higher maximum torque has no significance other than showing that the engine will have a lower max rpm. Torque alone without rpm doesn't say absolutely anything about the engine performance.
Torque and rpm have the same (1 to 1) impact on performance.

Heavier mostly because of the 4wd which gives it an advantage in the 0-100 though

Fact: From 0 - 70 it makes no difference. Even a 320d accelerate that fast from 0-70.

I have a f31 335d estate with a stage 1 engine remap and stage 2 or 3 gearbox flash from mallory performance and it took the piss out both an m4 and a a45 amg, guy in a 450bhp rs3 done me tho but not by much, he couldn't catch his breath that the bm was a diesel 💜💙💜💙
So either the driver of the diesel sucks, or the official numbers given by BMW aren't 100% correct. In this video the petrol engine beats to the 100 kph and to the 200 kph marks

GazRwood yes power /rpm curve or torque/rpm curve which are equivalent since P=M*ω, say everything you need about the engine performance , then for acceleration you have the gearbox efficiency and ratios, aerodynamics, mass and rolling resistance.
Torque alone doesn't say anything about performance while power alone, does because you know at some particular rpm it can deliver that power. For example a 1000Nm with 100hp will be roughly the same as a 100Nm 100hp, only max rpm will differ.
Remapped my 335d drive to 400bhp ... stood up against the 140i no problem.... I reckon I'd of had him on a standing start too.
Remap the m140i and then its a game changer

I just find it bizarre that the rwd 340i is faster to 60mph.
This is not true even on a perfect surface, the 335d always wins up to at least 60mph.
Perhaps is both cars were xdrive and touring with launch control used on both we would have a more fair comparison.

Yes, i is quicker than d, this is not surprise. But i think there is problem with any d, because transmission lets it rev to 5000. It works better between 3000-4000, max 4500 in this biturbo. Petrol engine likes reving to 6000-7000.
