This is just a quick video and explanation on how I was able to solve the problem of the alarm going off on our 2017 ACURA MDX SH AWD randomly and bothering my neighbors. In our case, it was a faulty hood latch sensor. It's a very easy DIY repair and might save you a lot of headache and frustration. Many forums say that you can simply disconnect the sensor at the base of the latch, but this caused a parasitic draw on our vehicle and the battery died overnight. I ended up just disconnecting the negative battery cable to disable it completely until I was able to fix it. You might be able to bend the small metal arm of the sensor enough to fix it, but that may not last too long. In my case, I just figured it was worth replacing it with a new OEM latch so hopefully I won't have to deal with it again anytime soon. It might be a good idea to pick up some replacement plastic clips that hold the plastic engine cover in place as it's quite possible some of them will break when removing it.

2012 Acura MDX. Horn was honking for no reason. Took off the hood latch, springs, and cable, cleaned up the the whole area, used brake cleaner, and slightly modified the metal lever to push down the small plunger valve to the sensor. Reinstalled it all and all is well. Culprit, all the grease and dirt build up. With the car locked, hit the lock button again on the remote, if the front lights do not flicker, then look into cleaning the hood latch and reviewing the lever and its interaction with the sensor plunger. Job took about 35 minutes and it was basic maintenance. You can always just disconnect the sensor as another option, but this was basic maintenance and easy to do.

Outstanding explanation of the issue. The key advise was the tip on checking if the side lights were going on when locking the car. They weren’t so I was pretty confident your tips would work. I replaced the hood latch in 10 minutes. Issue resolved. Thanks Dan!

Nice video showing the complete restoration. The danger of taking the car to the dealer is a tech may decide your keyless entry module is faulty (which is typically backordered), and then blah, blah, blah... $900 and 4 weeks later your alarm goes off again, because it was really a door or hood latch sensor all along. I decided to unplug the latch sensor and jumper it with a lead off a 1/4 watt resistor. The thickness is just right to make the connection. Tape if off for waterproofing and zip tie it so it doesn't flop. Latch closed state = closed circuit. The car will always think the hood is closed and the alarm system will arm as expected. Chances are if you are watching this video, you are already the type of person who would notice if the hood wasn't shut just by walking up to the car. So all you are giving up is the hood latch idiot light and accepting the risk that some really stupid criminal is going to try to pry your hood open before they break a window to get to the interior, which is where valuable stuff is usually stowed.

Acura MDX 2017, alarm was going off, mostly at the night time driving me and my neighbours crazy. Tried the trick with sensors, didn’t help, installed the new battery - didn’t help. Sometimes the head lights were turning on a minute before the alarm sound. Paid $3,000 at Acura dealership for new “dash wiring harness”. The problem stayed the same. Send it back to the dealership, after consulting with “Acura Canada 🇨🇦” the KEYLESS ACCESS UNIT was replaced for $750 and the problem was solved. Since the last repair - no problems. Enjoying the silence. For those who got the same problem - start with the KEYLESS ACCESS UNIT replacement.

There’s a guy on TH-cam (Regina) that shows you the problem and how to fix it. It’s “dendritic growth” (dendrite) on a IC on your PCB due to manufacturer defect of the Keyless Access Control Unit. They did not completely cover the IC with “Conformal coating” to prevent the dendritic growth due to moisture. You can remove the KACU behind glove box, Inspect under a microscope/magnifier (Amazon/$30), remove growth by cleaning with alcohol swab, then cover area with “Conformal coating” (MG Chemicals 422C). I just did it and it fixed the problem. Dealership know the problem but they’ll rip you off saying it’s something else having you buy unnecessary stuff.

Bought some engine degreaser and brake cleaner and "De-Gunked" my hood latch and sensor switch after removing it from the frame the same way as posted in this video.
My random alarm/horn hunking has STOPPED. So anyone dealing with this start at the Hood latch first before going to the Stealer-Dealership and paying them to diagnose something simple that'll take you 5-10min if you're quick.
I've been reading on forums folks were paying $165-175 for a diagnosis and the Stealership having customers replaced door sensors and key Fob control units etc.

Your video is showing step by step. The best video I have ever seen. My 2018 MDX is experiencing the same problem one year after yours. I did not know how to open the engine cover until a month ago after my car was experiencing warning lights on the dashboard. A simple fix may cost you a big fix at the dealership. I just paid $2000 a few days ago for the replacing the emblem(the main or only problem) and camera(maybe not the problem). This video maybe will solve my issue without paying another $1000 at the dealership again.
    A big Thanks to you!!

2018 Acura RDX....I replaced the hood latch 6/2023 and all has been good since then. Just recently (4/2024) the alarm started sounding again. I think I'll try @SuperPabster's advice and do a cleaning and maybe modifying the way the microswitch gets activated, so it doesn't happen again. What a pain!

I have the same problem but my lights do flash and the little beep does sound . I just noticed my rear passenger door does not show on my dashboard when it is open. I noticed it was missing the screw on the door sensor. The back of the sensor has a metal piece which with the screw it grounds it (I'm guessing). When I put the screw the door ajar came on in the dash. Now let's hope and see if that fixes the problem.

@@len7970 that would be my guess, possibly because it’s sensing that the hood is open and will not allow that function. You could always plug it back in for a minute and try the remote start function to confirm your suspicion…
