It reinforced the idea that God gave us something that White America has tried (unsuccessfully) to take away. But Nina Simone, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Gil Scot-Heron, the Last Poets, Langston Hughes, Lorraine Hansberry, and many, many, others, encouraged us by letting us know who we are, and mostly, how gifted we are, and to embrace our Blackness and not to be ashamed of it.
