i am a white 63 years old man from england, i saw this on youtube today it brought so many memorys from so many years ago with my jamaican friends here in england and yes they were young gifted and black, brought tears to my eyes.
This is beautiful, my parents met in the early 60s England and married. my dad was called from Grenada to work in the mills which he did for every day till he retired, he’s 82 now my mum is white and they’re both happy and going strong. I’m the youngest at 40 but my sisters and brothers were all born in the 60s and 70s so I had the absolute beautiful pleasure to get introduced to every single musical genre you could imagine.. My mum was always for the 50s /60s pop my dad 60s reggae and those white labels that were just instrumental and rare to get unless you had family send you them they were cold pressed and if you could make and Lo and not care about the taxes to get your talent out that was key. My brother the rave and 70 electro scene my sister the jungle and acid house and I slotted into the uk garage scene which I will play till the day I 💀 😅. It’s lovely because every generation has their sound and I’m blessed to have grown up in such an eclectic house hold of cultures and music , it really made me who I am today.
I was a young white Mod youth of 17 in 1970, and this was the song which defined my free teenage years between leaving school and joining the Army. It will always have a place in my heart.
I was the son of an American serviceman at RAF Lakenheath when Marcia released it. We were enlisted mens sons and were taught with British nationals along with the kids on the council estates. We frequently got the cane right along with him. Still I can’t listen to this and remember England. Thanks for your service mate. 🏴
This was one of my favorites songs growing up in 🇯🇲Jamaica where those artists are from. I now live in the USA and today I saw my 10 years old grandson came in from school wearing a T shirt with that quote written on it. It took me back to my childhood days 😊then I played this song for him and he ❤️💕it. Thanks for sharing.
This should be released today....an uplifting song with hope instead of some of the awful woeful songs released today and I'm neither young nor gifted nor black. But I have always loved this ❤
This so was so Uplifting for black people in the early seventies i can remember our house of many people everyone would sing a long we were so naturally beautiful and happy even though we did have a lot and we were constantly told we were bad because we had afro hair and because we are black. In jobs in schools on the street but this song gave us belief and confidence.
Total Bollox I was 12 when this song came out and I was from Forest Gate. We just got on and enjoyed the music there was NEVER any of that race shit we were all mates and loved the music. Sad and simply not true. 😢
It takes me back to funfairs in early 70's this and israelites, loads of ska even johnny reggae novelty song. Strong memories of being a kid in Yorkshire
This is such a wonderful song, and beautifully orchestrated too. I was about 17 when it came out and I remember my mum telling me to 'sing something else for a while'.
Reggae is like food for the soul. I see so many united people within the comments black white brown or yellow we r all brothers and sisters, and i love you all
My sister got this single and used to blast it out. Dad was one of Enoch's crowd and tried to ban it from the house, Mum stepped in and we just played it twice as much. He stormed out the room when it came on Top of the Pops! 😁
Barnet Rebel 4 hours ago I love this song & have done so ever since I first heard it in 1970. The violins playing change style with every verse & compliment the uplifting message of this musical masterpiece ❤️
Knocked out by this song in 1970 immediately after Nigeria civil war. Am still enraptured by it in 2019. Tnx to this wonderful couple. They are unforgettable.
Way back early 70s this record was played at The Court School of Dancing . A quick step. Then in my late teens . I have a tear in my heart when I play this tune every now and then . Its getting further back as the years pass by . Memories xxx
This song has lodged in my memory for so long, I have no idea when I first heard it but it's even better than I remember. I'm 60, moderately gifted and white and I hope that it has inspired my sisters and brothers of all colours, shapes and sizes over the years since it first came out. Lovely and uplifting and hopeful for a better future.
I was just happily reminded of this song. As a kid, I listened to it so often! I loved the uplifting feeling of this song and felt proud to know so many young, gifted & black folks.
First listen to this song is when I became a skinhead and searching any trojan records songs. Now I watch webseries about aretha franklin, then I google about her, and found this song is originally from nina simone and aretha cover it too...what a nice info
This suddenly grew on me so i got it on record. But i didn't have it long, it got broken the same afternoon as i got it. And only being six years old at the time, i never got another copy.
When I was little I thought they were singing about a cat and how it wasn't in it's bed when they got home at night. I thought they said " oh cat, where be your bed". Lol 😆 😂

Spot on Kathleen. "Uplifting" is good for us all and is sorely lacking in most of today's music.
Aw thank you 💓

The lilting string melody after the chorus is what really makes this record for me. It's a wonderful pay-off from the chorus.
“And I am haunted by my youth” 😊
Sends shivers down my spine when I hear these lyrics 😥😥
Produced by Harry "J" Johnson. Major classic that should be played NOW! 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
